I will forever love that Belchertown has a Japanese place! Having moved there in 2002 and living there until 2025, it was such a nice change in pace when they moved in. Nearly everything that's been ordered from myself or someone else I've gone with has been yummy. My eight year old absolutely loved the beef hibachi and if it were up to her, she'd eat it every night. If recalling correctly, the only food item I've ever not been thrilled about was their tteokbokki. Normally they have a little kick to them and Kansai's was very sweet. Still enjoyed the dish but I do wish it wasn't as sweet. Usually when we walk in they have us choose whatever table we would like to sit at which is also a plus. Especially when my daughter is in tow because sometimes her childhood whimsy gets a little loud. When I come back to town to visit family, this place is usually our go-to and I'm not upset about it! Kansai Asian bistro is a nicely decorated sushi restaurant located across from the town green in Belchertown. It has a decent sized dining area with a large bar for drinks and several TVs scattered throughout. My wife and I met her sister and son for dinner tonight. Let's start with the good. Huge menu with multiple choices of Asian inspired food to choose from. From ramen to hibachi to sushi they have a fantastic selection to choose from. The food itself is also very good. We tried the beef bulgogi appetizer, eel special roll, golden spicy lobster roll, Alaska roll, mt tom roll and chicken hibachi. All had fantastic flavor and the rolls were presented on a huge plate lined up next to each other. Now we describe the bad (or unfortunate). We were greeted by a nice young gentleman who seated us and gave us menus and water. As we sat looking at the giant menu trying to narrow our choices I realized that this guy who seated us was also our waiter. We put in our order and got comfortable. I noticed that this guy wasn't just the host, he was the only waiter in the whole place! Not only that he was also the bartender and the person doing take out. He had 7-8 tables of people plus dealing with take out etc. Our sushi rolls came after a good 20 minute wait. After about 10 more minutes our appetizer tacos came (isn't the appetizer first??) then after another 5-10 minutes we finally got the hibachi. Slow slow and slow. This poor guy working couldn't have done anything about this. I worked in food service for 40 plus years and realized what was happening. Some would just blame the waiter and his tip would suffer. That's wrong! The owners should not only should be aware of this lack of service but should have stepped in to help in times like these. Shame on them! I don't mind waiting for good food but being called a "bistro" you should be a step above the others. Especially with these prices in today's market. We have been to their sister restaurant but liked this one even more. The food, the staff and the choices were all excellent. The sushi chef was creating new dishes and they were all excellent! My ramen was one of the best I've ever had and I've had ramen in Japan! They were so attentive and friendly that we honestly did not want to leave. Even our 4 year old had an amazing time. We were really looking forward to trying Kansai tonight and made a special 30-minute trip from Hadley. To be proactive, I called en route just before 7:15 PM to check if we needed a reservation and was put on an extended hold. Eventually, I was shocked to learn that, contrary to the 8:30 PM closing time listed on all their major online profiles (which the restaurant manages), the restaurant actually closes at 8:00 PM and the kitchen stops service at 7:30 PM. The young man who identified himself as the manager admitted they were aware the hours were wrong online and had been for some time. I explained we were already on our way and would likely arrive just a few minutes after the un-posted 7:30 PM kitchen closing. Given that the entire issue stemmed from their incorrect information, I was surprised there was absolutely no willingness to accommodate us. The manager was adamant that they would not serve us, no matter the circumstances. I can't imagine how disappointed folks have been who did not happen to call ahead! For a local restaurant in a community (and because I love Kisara in Easthampton), this level of inflexibility and poor customer handling was a real letdown. The experience was capped off when he hung up on me after I asked for his name. We ended up having to find another dinner spot on the fly. While we can't speak to the food, this experience with the restaurant's basic management and professionalism was unfortunately a dealbreaker. We won't be attempting to visit again. read more

We had a great family dinner at Kansai and could not have asked for a better experience. Ksnsai had been on my family's radar for some time and I was really pleased with their extensive menu of sushi, curries, bulgolgi, and much more. The food was high-quality, really tasty, and there was something on the menu for everyone (from my 4 year old daughter to our 72 year old uncle). I was also amazed with the portions that you got for the price. We came on the earlier side and the restaurant was filling throughout the night. They have a good size bar and I appreciated the large screen tvs turned to the news and sports games. Service was fantastic! Melina, our server, was on top of everything, gave great recommendations, and took really good care of us. Kansai did not disappoint and we look forward to regular visits! read more

New "Asian Bistro" in Belchertown. Visited on a Saturday evening with friends for food and drinks. The sushi and sushi rolls were fresh and very tasty. The staff was helpful and pleasant and catered to our food allergy. Plenty of drink options. Place is clean with plenty of seating and a nice large bar area. Portion sizes and prices both good. Only downside for me was no fried rice on the menu. Only white rice. But overall a solid meal and a nice night out. read more

Came here after driving by a few times, decided to grab dinner. Great ambiance, nice and clean, nice winter lights. It was pretty packed for a Friday night, but didn't have to wait for a table. Service was quick and attentive, the staff were very helpful at clarifying the menu. Kani salad was 10/10, nicely dressed good amount of toppings and kani. The spicy ramen was 8.5/10, tasty broth and good amount of meat. Spring rolls were very crispy and tasty, but be aware that an order is 3 spring rolls cut in a diagonal. The sushi was pretty standard not bad but not amazing. Definitely will be coming back. read more

Kansai has the most delicious and most affordable Eastern Asian food that I've ever had. The ingredients are always super high quality, the taste and texture of the sushi is divine, the curry and soup is flavored to perfection but still manages to feel light in your stomach, and the orders are delivered quickly by kind and helpful staff. Oh Belchertown, where to begin. We waited with such hopeful anticipation for an actual restaurant in town. Our hopes were held up by seeing what looked like sustained large numbers of people walking to the restaurant and many cars in the area. We tried Kan Sai on a recent Tuesday. There were literally two other tables of people and several people at the bar/ counter. We are huge fans of Asian and Asian fusion food and try it everywhere we go. We drive long and far to enjoy other Asian restaurants. Our order was a sampling of items from apps to noodles, to hibachi. Our server was fine at the beginning but it became clear they were paying absolutely no attention to what we said-including our order. We waited a fair amount of time and then all of our food was delivered at once-apps and main courses. We told the server this displeased us and they offered to "hold" it longer. This was not an option. As we started to sample things, it became apparent that our food had been " held" already. The Galbi was literally a burnt offering which we had only one piece of and left. The server never asked why we did not eat it or take it home. Everything was overdone, and cold. We have never eaten at an Asian restaurant with such ridiculously small portions. The noodle portions were approximately just less than an amount the size of the palm of your hand. Since the server was very aware we were not happy from the minute they brought out 6 dishes of food at once, they told us one drink was " on the house". The problem is the drink was never taken off the bill! The only compliment we could give for the food was that the salad dressing was very tasty and very different from other similar salads in other restaurants. Our bill came and it was well north of a hundred dollars for two people. We left talking about how awful our experience was and how disappointed we were. How can this place have all the good reviews with others raving over it? We do not give Kan Sai very long to live in this town and we will certainly never go back. read more

Went here with my wife and daughter. We went earlier on a Saturday and found the place quite nice. Service was very good. Sushi was good and my wife had a rice bowl with vegetables that she really liked. Nice and close to home. Parking is a little challenging as you have to park across the street and navigate traffic but overall it's not bad. read more

I ordered take out hibachi chicken and vegetable hibachi. I called in the order because the online was confusing it looked like you got rice or noodles with the order and soup or salad, so when I asked if it came with anything he said no. i am not sure what we would of got if I hadn't asked because suddenly he said oh yes you get rice or noodle. So I asked for one with rice and one with noodles. Cost was $36.39. I got there just as they brought out. It took 45 minutes to make this. The vegetables consisted of zucchini onions and mushroom. The chicken was very dry and could not of been more than 2 ounces. There was a good portion of rice but a small portion of noodles. There was also one salad and one soup so I am guessing the person taking the order did not know what was included so just gave us one of each. The soup was good but not hot. All the food was not hot.
