This is a great little family owned and operated restaurant, and it reminds me of the restaurants in Japan that are owner operated. When we walked in, the owner gave us a hearty greeting, and motioned for us to sit at the sushi bar, which we did. :-) We ordered a variety of nigiri, oysters on the half shell, and hamachi kama, and they were all good. Our favorite was the Ikura with quail egg. The owner was very nice and we had a great conversation throughout our meal. We would definitely go here again, the next time we are in the area. read more

I've been coming here for years, and can't believe I haven't posted a review yet! This is by far the best sushi bar I have dined at in Western Massachusetts. The head sushi chef, Sammy is incredibly welcoming and each time we drive here, we look forward to seeing him. The volcano roll here is one of our staple and go to plates. Other than that, you can't go wrong with the sushi and shaismi. Its the freshest that I have personally had in the area, and easily competes (and exceeds!) the other sushi restaurants in Northampton. I live locally and have seen the restaurant for many many years. I ordered through GrubHub. My salad was OK. The miso soup was a tiny portion and a bit watery. The salmon sushi was profoundly fishy tasting. I've been eating sushi my whole life and this was one of the first times I ever tasted fishy sushi. I could not eat the yellowtail either. What I'm looking for in a sushi restaurant: really good, really fresh fish; sushi chefs who have good technique (i.e., pieces of nigiri sushi should fit into your mouth without you having to unhinge your jaw - sushi rice prepared properly and served warm - if I'm sitting at the sushi bar, which I am, the seaweed should still be crispy when I am handed my sushi); good service (i.e., take my order, refill my water, take my next sushi order, we don't need to become best friends); clean place; nice atmosphere where I can hang out and read for a few hours. I'm going to spend $100 per visit, so I feel like it's fine if I also happen to spend a few hours at your place. Sushi Disclaimer: I do not order cooked sushi or fried sushi or sushi with sauces or "tempura flake;" I do not ever order those giant rolls or "special" rolls. I order very simple sushi. I have eaten at Moshi Moshi a number of times. I live in Central Vermont and will make the 1.5 hrs drive to Northampton JUST to have sushi at Moshi Moshi. The sushi menu is small, but what they have is fresh and prepared properly. Sushi pieces are sized/portioned appropriately and I haven't had a single thing that wasn't delicious. What I like to order at Moshi Moshi: Nigiri Sushi of Ikura, Uni, Tobiko, Masago, Sake. You get the option to add a raw quail egg yolk to your sushi and I ALWAYS do that to some of my pieces of fish roe. Then I order all that nigiri again...I mean if you're going to drive 1.5 hrs to get to a place you have to make your visit WORTH it. I also love salmon skin roll, which is, in fact, broiled salmon skin (so I guess I take back my "no cooked sushi" statement...). I order it almost as a "test" of places to see what I get. Moshi Moshi does the best salmon skin roll I've had; crunchy, warm, delicious, NOT covered in freaking eel sauce. The place is small and in the winter it's FREEZING. Like legit freezing. So wear layers (when your waitress is wearing a full wool hat that is a sign...). But it's clean and welcoming and bright and all the staff is friendly and clearly take pride in their work. Nice little sushi shop serving fresh and innovative cuisine. I started with a miso soup which had a very intense miso flavor which was better than many other offerings I have sampled. I also had a seaweed salad which was a touch too sweet for me. I opted for two orders of the Honeymoon Oysters ($6.95 for 2) which were freshly shucked east oysters topped with tobiko, uni, quail egg and a touch of ponzu. The unctuousness of the uni and egg was cut by the acidity of the ponzu and you were still able to taste the brininess of the oyster. A very well composed appetizer. I also had an order of uni sushi which was very fresh and a Northampton roll which consisted of salmon, yellow tail, avocado and some micro greens. The roll was also very fresh and flavorful. I love this place because it feels like a real place run by real people. Like the chef choice roll is always something interesting the chef thought up. Right now I'm eating something that is spicy but in a way I'm not used to. It has an earthy fish flavor. Anyway it's great and not boring. If you like to pay $28 for tiny randomly cut pieces of sashimi including, but not limited to, fake crab meat, miss-shaped salmon end pieces, and incomplete tuna chunks and have to pay an extra $3.50 for a bowl of mushy over-cooked rice because it's not included then this is just the place for you. Lets talk about the rice. The technique of preparing rice correctly is the staple of any sushi restaurant. Not just good sushi restaurants. ANY sushi restaurant. This place didn't even use sushi rice. They used mushy, and I mean extremely mushy, over-cooked jasmine rice. Just plain awful and inexcusable. I actually really feel bad for all the people that are giving five star reviews because I know they don't really have anything much better to compare to. Bottom line: AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The owner Sam is a charming and energetic character. He greets everyone as they come in and always remembers repeat visitors. Makes everyone feel very welcome. Venue: it's small, on a busy night a reservation is a good idea with a party. It is well done and cozy/friendly feeling I think despite the small size. The upstairs holds larger parties OK. I usually go with 2-3 and sit at the sushi bar. But have totally gone with 6-8 upstairs with no issue. Food: Superb quality. The prices are definitely not the lowest around but the fish and veggies are always extremely fresh and tasty. Sam is a master of pairing interesting flavors. First let me just say, I have eaten at Moshi Moshi for years and tend to always end up there when I'm back in town visiting friends and family (I live in NYC now). Sam is always there and has an uncanny ability to remember me and my name every time I walk in - talk about personalized service! Be sure to check out their daily specials and some of the best finds are on that menu. One thing that can usually be made but sometimes isn't listed is a gem made by Sam's wife (sorry her name escapes me at the moment) called the kimchi pancake. It is similar to a scallion pancake yet orange in color and has the spice that you think of when eating the Korean side dish, kimchi. Tasty! Also the oyster appetizers traditionally served with ponzu sauce and scallion are wonderful. If you are daring for a bit more adventure in your oyster eating, have the kind topped with the sauce PLUS a quail egg and uni (sea urchin). Talk about decadent! I made a special request of our waiter, Karl, who was happy to see if Sam would be willing to oblige. Something that has become a trend at a few top NYC sushi bars is to make a sushi piece consisting of equal parts uni, quail egg and ikura (salmon roe). In NYC it is usually referred to as the "XXX" piece because it is obscenely creamy and delightful. Karl asked, Sam created, and low and behold the newly coined "LLL" pieces (my name is Lindsey thus the "L") came to me as tasty as ever. Sweet of both Sam and of Karl to help make that happen. I suggest going with some of their stand by house special rolls as they don't skimp on the fish and have interesting combinations to offer. All in all, don't miss Moshi Moshi if you are traveling through Northampton. I still think they reign supreme in the world of fresh, raw fish and seafood. read more

The most personable sushi chef and staff that is always equally friendly and happy to serve. The menu is both Unique, and always changing with new things to try. The spice crunchy handrolls are definitely the signature of Moshi, but we go back for creative delicious sushi and sashimi. The sushi guy is super friendly and welcoming when you walk in, but that's one of the few good things about this place. Moshi Moshi is super pricey for the tiny portions you get. Unlike other -- and yet *cheaper* -- Japanese restaurants, there is no complimentary miso soup and salad here. Why so skimpy, especially when the entrees are about $20? I ordered the chicken teriyaki and asked to substitute brown for white rice. The waiter said sure, we can do that. He (and the menu) failed to mention that such a swap would cost an additional $3.50, a ridiculously high price for a single serving of brown rice in place of white. Other Japanese places typically can sub brown rice for only $1. Furthermore, you can get a whole other side order of brown rice for $3.50! We love an unreasonable, overpriced meal. The food itself was alright. Definitely not $19 + $3.50 worth, though. The portion sizes were also pretty tiny; there was barely any chicken in the don buri. In short, do your bank account a favor, and pick a place with normal, reasonable prices. read more

I like the crazy spiral staircase that takes you up to the 2nd floor dining area. Our server was nice. The katsudon had way too many onions in the sautéed veggie layer. Really excellent sushi. We came here and split a few rolls including the moshi moshi roll, a speciality dragon roll, various sashimi, and more. Everything was indisputably fresh and extremely well-created. They clearly have sushi chefs that know what they are doing, which I absolutely appreciate. Sushi is my favorite food on earth! The physical sushi is 4/5 stars. But my issue with this restaurant is the accessibility, which makes me on the fence about giving 2 or 3 stars, something I rarely do. But I think this is important. Its not very handicap friendly. In theory, it probably *is* handicap friendly, because I would hope the state of Massachusetts in theory monitors that, but 3/4 of the seating is upstairs, only accessible by a narrow and deep spiral staircase that is very difficult to maneuver. We asked the gal if there was an elevator, to which she said no. Once we finally got upstairs, the chairs were part fold-up chairs, which I found so odd. It reminded me of the fold-up chairs in gyms at PTA meetings... very difficult to sit in (see photo below). On our way out, there was a second floor emergency exit door that the server was able to let us out of, but we had to awkwardly stand amongst a tight space and wait a few minutes for someone to come unlock it. I was grateful for that, but could tell its something they don't do often. Moshi Moshi is built onto a hill, so the second floor emergency exit door actually lets you out flatly on land. Ergonomically, Moshi Moshi is not a place I recommend if anyone in your party needs solid or accessible seating. I would opt for takeout. Otherwise, you won't be disappointed with the sushi. read more

Ugh. Don't go here. Pros: cute atmosphere and the waiter seemed to be knowledgeable...cons, bad quality fish, sour-tasting soy sauce (spoiled? Is that possible?) and slow, bad service. Food was horrific!!! Really bad. Paid for one portion of toro ($$$) and it was a couple of days old. Extreme fishy smell on the rolls. Greasy tempura that isn't even in a tempura batter. Seemed frozen. Unfortunately Northampton has a lot of Asian places and none of them are good. Osaka is okay for sushi sometimes (also have had old fish there) but the service is horrible and they rush you in and out. Better to save your sushi dollars for somewhere outside of the pioneer valley. Also three of us and a $119 check for really bad food. Would have been reasonable had any of it been decent. read more

Would you like to know why this is my favorite sushi place? First of all, you are greeted by the owner as soon as you walk in the door (yes, I did say the owner). The greeting is a happy "bong" and "welcome to Moshi Moshi!". You enter through the sushi bar; dining room is upstairs. The place is homey, clean, and the aroma from the cooking is great (assuming you love the food I love). The staff is friendly and if you have any issues, just say hi to the owner and he will be sure to make things right. This is a family-owned Business and photos of his kids are humbly presented in a corner of the sushi bar. BUT THE BEST THING ABOUNT THIS PLACE, is that the FOOD IS GREAT! Try it out. read more

Moshi Moshi is one of my favorite places in the world. Mostly because of owner/sushi chef Sam. The key to a good moshi moshi experience is to sit at the sushi bar and chat with Sam and ask him what to order. If you have a larger group you can try a table upstairs as well, the ambiance is nice up there and my parents liked it, but trust me it won't be as fun. Reasons that Sam is pretty much the best guy ever: 1. Once performed Hey Jude on a strangers Acoustic Guitar while behind the sushi bar 2. Offered to help me find a job when I had been laid off 3. Knows all of his regulars by name and is always genuinely happy to see them 4. Will be straight with you about what to order and will even make you something special to your liking The point of this is that Moshi Moshi is awesome. I've never had a single bad experience there, the fish is always delicious, cooked food seems pretty decent as well, and the staff are the nicest sweetest people you'll ever meet. 5 stars all the way. My daughter and I were thrilled when late on a Saturday night, as we drove by Northampton, we impulsively called Moshi Moshi, got directions, and scored 2 seats at the 7-seat sushi bar in this adorable restaurant. Moshi Moshi is a tiny place with a BIG welcome from the sushi chefs and wait staff. We shared an excellent appetizer of spicy tuna tartare on rice chips and then had a bunch of a la carte rolls: spicy salmon handrolls, spicy California cut roll, avocado cut rolls, and an adorable "Caterpillar" cut roll (supposedly created in honor of author Eric Carle who the chef said was a customer of the restaurant). Every item was beautifully fresh, prepared very well, and casually but attractively served. Great service from both the wait staff and the chef, who is quite a character. It was a lovely last-minute decision and offered fun and interesting conversatioin that can result when sitting at a sushi bar in a small place with friendly people.
