While wandering through Bed-Stuy on a weekday evening, my husband and I decided to try out this new sushi spot. It wasn't terrible--but I had a lot of mixed feelings. Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time. read more

Izakaya Tenzo is a welcome addition to the BedStuy food scene. They'd been on my radar for a while and we stopped in on a Saturday evening when we wanted dinner but not anything too heavy. This fit the bill exactly. We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable. read more

The food is very good. Standouts are the crispy tuna rice and good veggie options. The ambience is lacking. The space is too large and echo-y and the tables too close together for the lack of soundproofing. Izakaya places are usually more calm and quiet than this. read more

Had an awesome meal at Izakaya Tenzo with my partner. We divided to splurge ($35) for the tuna rib and it was a really fun experience (and great way to eat sashimi - gave us some nori wrappers and wasabi with it). Our favorites were the hamachi collar, chicken meatballs, and the double tuna roll. It was easy to get a table at 6:30pm on Sunday, and would recommend the spot for a casual date night or fun time out with friends. Reasonably priced and great service too. Pros: - So glad we finally have a solid sushi izakaya spot in BedStuy! - Attentive and friendly service - Loved and recommend the Crispy Rice Tuna (crunchy, delicious, big portions), Rock Shrimp (lightly fried and fresh), Double Salmon Roll (super saucy and flavorful), and Double Tuna Roll. Neighborhood Japanese restaurant with a decent sake selection. It felt more local a sushi spot than an Izakaya, but they had way more sake options than your typical, local sushi spot. We shared the crispy rice tuna, karaage, and a small bottle of sake. Everything was ready quickly. The most interesting item on the menu was the blue fin tuna ribs. I'd be interested in returning to try those. Unfortunately, I didn't have the appetite for it this evening. There was one, spacious gender neutral restroom. Service was attentive. read more

We got take out and I have a slight allergy to mayo, and they put my rolls (that didn't have mayo) in the same package as my friends (who did have mayo) so I couldn't eat my rolls. Which was very disappointing. The spare ribs were good but really fatty. The brussel sprouts were really good and tasty. The edamame was a little soggy but still good. Food was excellent! We had an assortment of items including appetizers: rock shrimp, fried chicken, and chicken meatballs-all were fantastic. The takoyaki (octopus balls) were one of my favorites. Sushi platter and beef udon were delicious as well. We concluded the evening with green tea mochi for dessert-yum! Service was kind and efficient, and the owner checked in on us as well. Oh my where do I begin to tell you about this amazing restaurant. The food is fresh, clean and delicious. We enjoyed an array of dishes starting with the smashed cucumbers in a house soy, mirin, sesame oil vinaigrette, refreshing to say the least. Then the seared scallops with mixed mushrooms, melt in your mouth delicious. We moved on to the broiled mackerel, smooth and tasty. Had to try the Brussel sprouts baked with crispy panko, don't pass on those. We just kept going onto the crispy rice tuna. Yummy!!! Could not leave without trying the vegetable roll of course. House sake, hot was a must for me and hubby had a Sapporo draft beer. I had to try some dessert. Mochi Ice-cream, 2pcs both the green tea and vanilla flavors. Interesting choice it's a mixture of ice cream and sticky rice pounded into dough, a Japanese confection. Loved the vanilla! The waitresses and the chef were pleasant and attentive. Me and my wife split the Crispy Spicy Tuna, Pork Katsu, and Shrimp Tempura Udon. Each dish was delicious and clean, everything you'd want from authentic Japanese cuisine. Would definitely recommend and will be back to try other dishes on the menu. Service staff is super kind as well! read more

Me and my family came here on a Friday night a while ago. And we wanted to go on the earlier side. I think we got there around 5:05pm and there was already a line! They were just able to squeeze us in for 2 hrs before there was a reservation. All the servers and waitresses were so kind and very welcoming. There were a lot of families which was nice because it is a neighbourhood restaurant. The food was really good. We got multiple sushi rolls and fried chicken and something else. And it was just amazing. We can't wait to go back (and maybe make reservation). I definitely recommend that you guys go try it out! read more

I'd been wanting to check out this new Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood since it opened a month or two ago, and finally went last weekend. They have a simple menu, with both cooked options and a limited sushi and sashimi selection. At first, I was a little disappointed that the sushi election wasn't more varied, but when I tasted the sashimi, I realized that it is some of the freshest sashimi I've had in Brooklyn. The smashed cucumbers were also delicious, as was the miso soup and edamame. It's a small space, and not overly fancy. The focus is on the food and service. The servers were incredibly polite and seemed to care about the customers' experience. The only kind of funny ambiance note was that on the evening I was there, they were playing some pretty intense heavy metal, but not overly loudly. It actually added to the charm. Finally made it to Izakaya Tenzo this week and loved it! It's so nice to have first rate Japanese food in bed stuy! Highlights for my first time there were the double tuna roll, tuna triangle, short ribs, smashed cucumber, and the brussel sprouts. The menu is large with a lot of great options so it's going to take some time to get through it. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. Stylish and comfortable with plenty of room for patrons.
