I have been w/ JA for the last 3 years. We definitely had a rocky start (long story) but eventually, after much antagonizing, they did fix the problem. I just had my bi-yearly check up and was satisfied. They have one secretary who is very nice, I believe something that starts w/ a B, like brianna maybe. She told me my appointment was today at noon. So i made the timing available w/ work. 1205, no one is here, so i call the office asking whats going on. I get put through to the other woman....who i cannot remember if this is the same person from 3 years ago....but she is the absolute worst. I work at a small biz, if I acted the way she acted....we would be out of business. I called and she told me no one would ever tell me noon, the range is 12-5. I said well that is what I was told but cancel my appointment. I was planning on changing providers because this lady is literally that rude. She makes you feel like YOU are the one bothering her. I do not know why she acts this way, i cannot be the only one who has experienced this. While she was accusing me of not understanding how clocks work, i texted my wife and said "we are done using JA" and started googling other providers and reaching out. But the reason why i gave 3 stars and not one. I had an amazing technician. I hope I get his name right because he is literally the reason why I did not change. I signed up for another year because he is so kind. So i gave my business for another year solely because of (possibly evan) dark hair, glasses, from reading area. He is an asset to your company and was the reason why you didn't lose a customer. He didn't do anything crazy, just was kind and didnt accuse me of not understanding how appointments work. Our family of 5 (including 3 young kids) has been without heat for over 4 weeks due to exceedingly poor service from JA Smith and I would urge you to avoid their business at all cost. We have no clear path or timeline for getting our heat back and are extremely concerned at the integrity and competence of this business. Ours heat stopped working in the downstairs part of our home which includes the kitchen, living room and kids basement playroom. It took them 3 full days to send someone to investigate the issue despite it being below freezing the entire week. When someone finally did arrive, they told us a critical part broke and we needed to wait 2+ weeks for it to arrive. Then they brought the wrong part. Then they said the part still isn't fixing the issue. In the meantime, we've endured multiple days of below freezing temperatures, a snowstorm and multiple dinners literally wearing coats. We've tried calling the owner and his response was entirely unhelpful and apathetic. At this point, they can't explain why the system they installed one year ago isn't working. In the meantime, the service people that have come to our home have literally napped in our kids playroom couch and smoked pot in our driveway while "waiting for tech support. Attached is an image of my kids couch in our basemewhich is drenched in sweat and body odor from where the most recent techs slept. We've also spent a fortune on running space heaters to keep the house mildly functional. read more

I cannot imagine why this business has anything but 5 stars! They have had to come out twice and both times they immediately solved our problems and at the lowest cost possible solution. On July 3rd at 5 pm our air conditioning completely died. They called us after hours, and we had a technician the next morning who solved our problem rapidly and saved us from baking in the house. They came to our house 3 times because we had no heat. They were responsive the first time we called them. The 2nd and 3rd they took their time calling us back. We were told we either needed a new (minimum $8000.00) heater or a new condenser board for $600. We replaced the board and a week later no heat. They came out again and replaced a $5 piece of foam that was over the motor and charged us $243 nothing mentioned about a new heater. 2 days later no heat again. We decided to go with another company for a 2nd opinion and we were told that we needed a new blower motor. We opted for a new heater to be safe as ours is already 10.5 years old. To pay $243 for a $5 piece of foam and $600 for a part that wasn't needed. The only good thing I can say is the workers were very friendly. We have decided to go with a new heater and stick with the new company. $600 for a condenser board and $243 for a piece of foam straight in the trash! We are out $843! read more

Never on time. Never prepared. Always takes multiple visits even for just a maintenance call. Every time they promise it will be better and it's not. My fault for staying with them. In 2008 I had a Heat Controller HRH042A01CO1ARS geo-thermal heat pump installed, this unit worked without problems until recently; over the years we had to tighten a connection, replace the thermostat, and replace a few TACO valves. In 2014, I was referred to JASmith of Warminster, PA by the local Heat Controller distributor. JASmith replaced a TACO valve. A few months ago, we had no heat and I contacted JASmith to check the heat pump. On their 1st visit, 12/7/16, a technician named Mike reported that the reversing valve was sticking. in the next visit, 12/12/16, Mike added Zerol to the coolant; this didn't fix the sticking valve. They then recommended a new TXV. On 12/23/16, Giovani checked the hear pump, the heat pump still didn't produce heat. On 1/10/17 Giovani recharged the refrigerant and replaced the discharge muffler. On 1/23/17 Mike and Giovani replaced the TXV, evacuated and recharged the system after which the system still didn't work; it went into vacuum. JASmith then contacted the manufacturer's Tech Support were told that the compressor was bad and that there was contamination in the system due to liquid line dryer. "Dryer broke apart and contaminated the system." Tech Support recommended replacing the system due to contamination. The JASmith representative told me it broke because I had installed improper equipment inside the heat pump; prior to JASmith's service the unit had only been opened to tighten a connection. They also told me they would send me a proposal to install a new unit. JASmith charged me more than $1800.00 over several visits to then leave me with a destroyed heat pump and then they offered to install the new one for $14,000.00. Subsequently, I contacted the manufacturer and they said "They (JASmith) replaced the muffler with a dryer . it came apart and has clogged up the txv and cap tube. The contractor should have known better than to put a dryer in the hot gas line. That is not covered under any warranty.) JASmith's service over several weeks was all "trial and error" with the final error being the destruction of my heat pump. I am now in the process of having a new heat pump installed for more than $12,500.00. Needless to say, JASmith is not doing any other work for me. read more

I called for a tune up for my air and heating system. A man came and told me that I should get a new system. He said he could clean the coil, but there was no guarantee it would do the trick and it might disintegrate. Needless to say I was afraid to mess with it. I called my insurance company and they told me I would have to go through their contracted companies. I called someone they recommended and he came out and cleaned the coil with no problem. It has been working fine since. I spent 324.00 dollars to J A Smith Company that did nothing. Needless to say, I will never have them back again. read more

We bought a new house in Bucks county 5 years ago. The heating system made half of the upstairs unbearably hot, and the other half cold. Another HVAC company, the one that installed and serviced the system for those 5 years, told us the problem was due to a builder design flaw, that the HVAC system wasn't suitable for the architecture of the house, and that we would have to bring in a mechanical engineer and reconfigure the system to fix it. Enter JA Smith. Their estimator came in and evaluated the whole house, came up with a solution, and gave us a quote to fix the problem upstairs. It was reasonable enough that we were able to have the whole house fixed. JA Smith charged much less than the original HVAC company had estimated. Hundreds instead of thousands. They did the job quickly and were very professional. They wore booties and were careful not to scrape their ladders against the wall, unlike the other company. We will be using JA Smith to service the system going forward! read more

Long story short....No. These guys came SO highly recommended by the seller of the house I bought. They were practically foaming at the mouth to tell me what a great job these guys do. J.A. Smith had apparently maintained the heating system at the house for years (Possibly 10+) and were so wonderful and timely and fairly priced and yada yada yada. I checked their reviews on yelp (and others) - not stellar reviews but not awful. So I go with my gut - Why not use the people who know this house and it's aging heating system well. Makes sense right? I call them to schedule a winter inspection/tune-up service of my boiler as suggested, we set a time and a date - a Friday afternoon - and we're good to go. They no showed. Admittedly, they did call to tell me it was unlikely they would get to me as they were working on a "No Heat call" But they called me AFTER no showing. (By about an hour and a half...) I figured, Hey, things happen, I'm new to Philly, maybe things are a bit more relaxed here? Whatever - I'll just reschedule. So I agreed to a new appointment time and we agreed that they would be at my door between 9:30 am and 10:00 am on Saturday. Saturday dawns. 9:30 am, I get a call from some surly dude who sounds half asleep. He's calling to tell me that he's with J.A. Smith and is heading my way. BUT - he just left Cherry Hill so he will be pulling up in about 45 minutes. (So he's already going to be late.) I grit my teeth, I say "Ok, that's fine, I guess I'll see you at 10:15 then." We hang up. Admittedly, I'm not a logistics expert but, if I'm a plumber who lives in New Jersey and I know I need to be in a certain area of Philly between 9:30 am and 10 am, one would assume I would know what time I need to wake up and what time I need to be on the road to meet that commitment. (Especially since it's what I do every day to make a living.) Right? SO - At exactly 10:50 am (!?!) still plumberless, I decide enough is enough. I called the main office (Got the machine) Called the surly plumber guy (no answer) finally called the emergency line and told the guy on the other end to call the surly plumber, who was apparently driving at the speed of a bicycle, and tell him not to bother showing up at my house. I didn't care if he was at the bottom of my street at that exact moment or parking on my driveway (He wasn't) I was officially done with J.A. Smith and their absolute lack of consideration for their customers. Two no shows on a new client call AND this is in addition to the fact that the previous owners had supposedly reached out to them before we closed on the house to tell them I would probably be calling them, that they were recommending the company highly and were going to tell me all about the "service plan." I'm walking in to this ready to sign on the dotted line and this is what I get? So I found an excellent company to replace them. My plumber rocks, he shows up on time and life is awesome. End of story right? No. 1) Surly plumber guy called me twice after the fact and left messages asking when I wanted to reschedule the appointment since I apparently had to cancel. (!?) 2) J.A. Smith have been calling me every other week or so since November (It's January) to try to sell me an annual service plan. They even mailed me a mildly ominous sales-y letter informing me that this was my LAST CHANCE to take advantage of their service plan offer. (I can only presume that the service plan guarantees two no shows a year and 5% off all parts or something...) I have since blocked their numbers and just ignore their voicemails. Unbelievable.
