I have finally tried fufu... and it's a delightful experience! I got the assorted meats (tripe, cow hoof, beef) with Egusi Soup and a side of fufu. The meat with sauce was really delightfully salty and complemented the neutral fufu. Much of the meat is collagen so I'm not sure if I would get it again though. The egusi was right in the middle in terms of spice and flavor and also very beginner friendly! This thing can feed like 3 people because fufu is so filling. For the appetizer we also tried a beef pie! Pretty good, nothing super outstanding but I liked it :) Ola our server was happy to tell us all our options and even gave us free Nigerian bread with Nigerian butter on the house! I'm not sure what was different about it but it smelled very sweet and had the similar texture to milk bread. Also being two Asian females apparently attracted some attention because gentlemen from a different table tried to pay for our drinks and they were very curious where we were from. This has no bearing on the establishment I just wanted to mention it cuz it was so startling. No worries though because we gracefully (?) fended off their advancements. My father is Nigerian and my mother is from Louisiana. So I get the best of both worlds with the culture and food in my opinion. I absolutely love Nigerian food. My boyfriend has never eaten it, and I wanted him to try some good Nigerian food. After getting in touch with my sister and checking yelp reviews, we decided on this place. Upon entry, we were greeted by two nice young ladies behind the counter. The restaurant is cute, cozy, and clean. The clean was a plus. Clean in the parking lot and most definitely inside. I enjoyed my food. My boyfriend enjoyed his as well, but the meat was a little tough for his liking. Other than that, we enjoyed everything, and there was so much food. I really enjoyed my experience of getting delicious Nigerian food to go at Abuja Cafe! I came here on the good word of a friend and was not disappointed at all! I'd like to mention that it is bright and so clean on the inside! Very inviting! The young lady and the gentleman 1/25/22 were very pleasant and patient! I ordered my favorite jollof rice with plantains. It came with two pieces of meat so I got dry fried chicken, which means without red stew. I don't care for stew on my meat. It comes with a container of smoky and spicy greens- the most delicious that I've had in Houston. I also ordered a side order of plantains which came with a whole lot and was too much for me but that's definitely not a complaint! I share! I will say that the jollof was delicious! It just needed to be a little hotter in spice and I'm used to Nigerian fried chicken being much drier, and well, a little more tough. I know it doesn't make sense to the usual fried chicken connoisseur but I'm used to a delicious fight with my Nigerian fried chicken. Oh well, it was very tasty though! My family and I were awfully disappointed with how this establishment has went down the drain food was poorly cooked, either had too much tumeric and was sprinkled with more tumeric when served. The total price was $80 which is expensive when you could wrestle with one bite of the meat, and choke through each bite of fried rice and dried meat that almost had the same texture as burnt leather. I visited this restaurant and was given OLD STALE HARD beef. When I called, after not being able to eat it, the person on the phone told me I would receive a new order on my next visit. A week later I returned for a new order and was charged $44 dollars for what would likely be the same old stale beef! The supervisor proceeded to argue that they do not give out old food, then proceeded to contradict that lie with the truth of WHEN THEY DO THIS AND GET COMPLAINTS they just give more beef as if DOUBLE STALE MEAT is desirable. Cafe Abuja was amazing! I went about a week ago after going to a Nigerian church and was in the mood for some good Nigerian food. I saw that they had a lot of good reviews on Google so I figured I'd try them out. And I am so happy I did. I ordered some egusi stew with mixed meats (which does not include pork - Thank God). And I had it with pounded yam. It cost about $19 I think, which when ordering I thought was a bit much, but I was still anxious to try them out. When they brought the food, I then saw why the price was what it was. They brought 3 containers (1 for the egusi, 1 for the meats and 1 for the pounded yam). It was A LOT of food! So $19 actually wasn't bad. And what's more is it ended up being enough food for about 3 meals!!! Anyway, the taste was phenomenal!!! It was sooooo good that I've been bragging about this place ever since! The restaurant itself is very beautifully and tastefully laid out. The service was great! Once you order, you are able to get a text message when your food is ready. Which I really liked because I wanted to check out the other stores next to it while waiting. We are an Indian family and had Egusi with pounded yam at cafe Abuja a few weeks ago and it was the first time we tried Nigerian food. We LOVED the place, the people (customer service) and of course, the food. Made and served with so much love. The ambience of the place is homely yet very modern. Now, whenever we make chicken or beef curry at home, we make sure to take carry out of pounded yam. This was my first time trying Nigerian food and it was a great experience. They have a nice size menu and great staff. The restaurant is clean and they are doing a good job at social distancing. I had the okra, goat, and pounded yam. Because it was my first time trying Nigerian food I can't really judge it or compare it but I can say I wish it had more flavor to it. What I love so much about Cafe Abuja is the service! Let's be honest most Nigerian restaurants have horrible service with side eyes and low patience , but not cafe Abuja! The ladies who work her have always been nice and courteous. I also love the ambiance. The plantains are starchy, like potatoes, which made for a great supplement. And, I'm sure that they are more nutritious even. Again, I would tone down the spiciness for non-Nigerian people like me who aren't as adept at eating this food. The spinach side dish was absolutely lovely. It had all the natural flavor plus unshelled shrimp. I wouldn't change a thing here. It melded well with the rest of the meal. I had plenty of leftovers for four more meals. And, to tame down the spiciness, I added Quinoa (like rice) to the meal. It went very well though I'm sure that is took away from having authentic Nigerian food. This is long overdue, but I wanted to add Cafe Abuja to my list of local greats. It's definitely a drive for me, so I don't get to go often, but it's worth it. My friend is a foodie, and discovered this place on his side of town. We're from the same hometown, and he knows about my heritage, so he asked me if I'd been; since I hadn't, we made a lunch date and met up one afternoon. The interior is clean and a bit cozy, but they have the tables arranged well, so it doesn't feel too crowded, which is good. The staff are attentive and friendly (not gonna lie, service can be hit or miss at similar restaurants). We even met the owners, who were there greeting everyone. Nice touch. They have a solid selection of drinks, and I even got my malt fix. I was a little bummed that they didn't have chin chin or puff puff available then, but I also understand why. (If there's not enough demand, it's not worth the labor). I had the egusi with pounded yam, some plantain (dodo), and moin moin, and all were delicious. The place is a rip off. I paid money for beans plantain and fish. I was given my food and decided to check the plate.To my amazement,the plantain was missing. The so called manager was asked why nobody explained to me about the missing plantain and could have left the store thinking that my order was complete. I drove forty minutes to the place and don't live in Housto,but currently working out of Houston. I left the store without any plantain, even though i paid for beans,plantain and fish. Loved this place! I was able to parallel park right in front of the building. The staff were so helpful and inviting. I felt like I was surrounded by family and friends immediately. I tried two entrees so that it would last few days. I ordered the beef stew which comes with plantains, rice and greens. I love the spicey broth this is made in. You can get this stew with your choice of meat. I think it's tomato base. Their jollof rice was best I ever had. It's enough rice to last me all year though because I only eat a little. I'll just freeze the rest. I also tried the Nkwobi dish which came with a large amount of meat. I learned the Nkwobi dish is a Nigerian delicacy and usually only offered at exclusive restaurants. Unfortunately, I learned that I don't like the texture of Nkwobi or cow foot. The closest thing I can think the texture reminded me of is chicharon or maybe ham hocks a little. Just not for me. I enjoyed the experience and the rest of my food so will definitely be back to try something new. I keep an open mind so glad I know now that I don't like anybody's cow feel.
