I was waiting for my daughter to finish taking a High school exam and needed to kill time so I walked in here and asked for a manicure. It seemed like a clean place and quite big for a nail salon. There was a lot of workers there so I didn't have to wait at all for my turn, which is unusual for me. I got a male nail technician, which was also a first for me. He took his time in cleaning my cuticle and left my nails looking clean and shiny. I loved the options they had for nail color since there was variety and ended up going with a shimmering light blue nail polish. It started to chip after 3 days but it was pretty nonetheless. I came here because a friend swore Helen was amazing at UV gel, but my experience was anything but. I called ahead and was told the earliest appointment was 3 p.m. Fine. Then around 12:25, the receptionist called asking if I could come at 12:45 because Helen needed to leave early. I agreed and literally dropped everything to rush over. At 12:44, while I was only three blocks away, I got another call: "Where are you?" No greeting, no hello, just a rude tone. I thought to myself, if you had an earlier appointment, why tell me 3 p.m. in the first place and make me rush last minute? The whole thing felt disorganized and inconsiderate. Helen did my UV gel, but the result was bulky, uneven, and just sloppy. I could have overlooked that if the service or atmosphere made up for it, but it didn't. The staff spent the entire time gossiping about every customer who walked in and out. I understand FJ, Mandarin, Cantonese, Toisan, and Hakka, so trust me, I caught every word. It was honestly uncomfortable and unprofessional. When it came time to pay, the receptionist didn't say hi or thank you, just took the cash. The only "thank you" I got was from Helen when I tipped. I have been coming here for years because of the convenience and close distance from my home, but I won't be returning. The manicurists always seem rushed and just want to get to the next person. They aren't detailed-oriented and don't do as nice of a job as they should. There's often a portion of the nail that they miss. This is the 2nd time I ever went there. The first time, the lady who did my nails buzzed it down so much that my nails were so thin and they hurt and I was doing regular gel nails. I went back yesterday and ended up with the same lady and I was doing gel toes. I asked for black with no design since she wasn't good with it the first time when doing my nails and kept it simple. I don't know if the uv light sucks or what, but today, multiple black gel polish is already peeling off my toe nails. Originally, I didn't want to go there but it was the only one opened on the same block since it was a holiday. Ugh. What a waste of $40 bucks. They are legit. Everyone knows that awkward feeling when you walk into a nail salon. Sometimes you get a low hi greeting, sometimes you get "pick a color" greeting, and sometimes you get ignored. However, when I walked into j&h, I was greeted with a smile right away by Helen. Even if Helen was busy the other staff will greet you in. I called for an appt with her on Tuesday for Friday morning. Do book your appointments! Specially, if you want a specific person. And do not be late They are busy! I overheard that Helen was booked until following week, Monday. This was my first manicure in the area and they did amazing, from start to finish. I got UV gel set with tips and gel top coat. As of 2022, total for this was 67$ The place is clean, and tidy. The manners and attitude of the staff seem to be very lacking. When asked about a certain process the employee got upset and threw down their tools to get it another bag and do the job over. When asked if there was a problem they became very defensive and abrasive. Employee was stationed at position #11. The professionalism that was here the first time we came here isn't what was given today. The lack of professionalism and sheer arrogance displayed by some of the staff is beyond me. Not sure why this place gets so much hate. I've gotten my nails done here three times in the past year and have never made an appointment to see them. I was still accommodated. These ladies (and lad) are trying to hustle and would take on whoever is at their salon. Each time I came to get my nails done, I would either prepare for a wait, or if I really want to be in and out, would come right at opening time on a weekend. If I could give ZERO STARS I would. I use to come here all of the time with my cousin and we could get hard gel manicures. The set would come out beautiful which is why we would keep coming back for refills. However, I wanted my nails to take a break and the only bad thing with hard gel is that they cannot be soaked off with acetone, only FILED off. I cannot do this myself since I don't have a drill so I came in to file it off. The lady that filed my nails down filed so far the the MIDDLE OF MY NAIL STARTED TO BLEED. It was absolutely disgusting and painful. I was extremely angry and all the lady whispered was "sorry". Nothing else, offered no future compensation or anything else. This place is terrible. Helen is also on top of all the trends and I constantly get asked who does my nails. She also cares about manicure longevity and nail health (so important!) -- and takes special care to ensure the products she's recommending will last and not do any long-term damage. Dropped by to get my nails done with a friend last Friday around 5PM. We'd seen the place open, looking significantly nicer than all the other nail salons in the area, and just decided to give it a go. Every nail tech was busy when we walked in, with no one at the desk. No biggie tho, we were asked if we needed help by Jimmy, the owner, fairly quickly. New clients were popping in the entire time we were selecting colors & getting our nails done, the place is definitely busy! There's a little display of SNS dip powder colors you can choose from, as well as some posters on the walls. After a lot of deliberation, my friend decided to do dip powder and a pedicure with me settling on a French manicure. I had SNS dip powder on my natural nails that needed to be removed prior, so one of the nail techs turned a little buzzing machine on, filled it a little less than halfway with acetone, and hurried off to attend a pedicure. I was taken by Linda for my manicure. She quickly told me that the French manicure picture I showed her was too difficult (it wasn't traditional French, but was something like two lines on the side of an almond shaped nail). A little weird that she didn't try to accommodate or make something work but didn't particularly bother me. My nails were definitely weak after the SNS, but my nail tech proceeded to insist I do gel instead due to the weakness. Maybe an upsell attempt, or maybe she just has a slightly pushy attitude? Oh well. Again, I lowkey agreed that I'd need gel with how fragile my nails felt. She kindly asked me what length I'd like my nails, proceeded to file a little rougher than I'd have preferred. Was worried my nails would break honestly. When she first shaped my nails, they were way too ovular with many of them were slightly crooked and different lengths. She did touch up the few I requested though! She was patient while I selected the gel colors and we later got to chatting a ton since we speak the same language (Cantonese). Unfortunately, she did nick me prettyyy badly on my pinky. I've endured cuts before from salons, but this one must have been deep because it burned for two days and would not stop bleeding even after I left the salon (over half an hr). She apologized twice, putting a blue liquid on it that quickly turned the blood brown. But it kept bleeding. Must've been deep. Things happen though! At the end of the day, she was pleasant and we had a nice chat, though I'm not sure I'd request her when I go back simply because I'd prefer a little more care. It seemed she might have been the right hand nail tech to the owner? He called her several times. My friends SNS nails came out good, though the color on the display was wayyy more periwinkle than the lavender that came out on her hands. Her nail tech kindly fixed toes that she had messed up and even refused taking additional tip for it when my friend physically handed her extra cash. That really was super kind and gave me a better impression of the business. They do have free WiFi with the password posted on the walls, a nice touch, but I can't vouch for how good it is. Seemed a little weak, but again, a nice touch! After, my friend's nail tech offered her a discount card of ( I think ) $10 off any facial service. I think my nail tech must have forgotten lol, because when my friends nail tech realized I didn't have a card she hurried to get me one as well. Which was again super nice. There's also a $35 one time facial offer posted at the store front (a better deal than the $10 off for sure). Overall, the place is clean and super nice compared to other salons in the area. They changed the plastic linings for pedicures. Also wildly spacious, I never noticed anyone sitting next to me. In a Brooklyn salon? Crazy! I believe there's a separate room for facials as well as a bathroom too. Jimmy, the owner, owns Jimmy Nails on 10th Street (something Linda filled me in on lol), which has been around for 10+ years at least. J & H is probably $3-$10 pricier than other salons, but you get what you pay for! I'd recommend if you're looking for something a little nicer in the area, in terms of both ambiance and staff. read more

Dropped baby off to my mom and ran around Kings highway looking for a salon, with no luck. You don't feel rushed and they're so friendly from the front desk to your nail technician. My only complaint would be the wait time. I was in there for about 40 minutes before being serviced. *Jan 2024 updated review: this would be now my THIRD VISIT TO THIS SALON! I needed to do gel manicure only & I had SNS powder. First red flag, I had a small cut on my inner thumb, instead of wrapping my nails to soak off, they made me sit in an acetone bath soaking my nails which really irritated my fingers. Second red flag, they just let me sit there, until I asked another tech who was doing someone else's nails how much longer, talk about feeling disregarded. When I went back to my chair with the male nail tech I explained I want my nails deep cleaned because I'm not doing any polish and I had a lot of cuticles. He did a very quick cleaning and I kept finding dry skin and it looked sloppy. Third red flag, at this point I kept checking my nails as he would move onto to next step and point out parts of my nail he left sloppy & unclean. He got so annoyed, he started being more rough and cut 2 of my fingers until they bled. I wanted to just run out of there. Never going back! read more

This salon is absolutely fantastic. They are super clean and vigilant in these times of Covid. Temperatures are checked at the door, masks for employees and clients are required, and hand sanitizer is available throughout the salon. Everything is cleaned and disinfected between each client and all of the stations are protected by partitions separating the nail techs and clients. I got a standard manicure, eyebrow wax, and a spa pedicure. Amy was my Nail Tech; she was kind and did a fabulous job. She was extremely thorough working on my cuticles and callouses and polished my nails perfectly. She took her time and really focused on giving me a pleasant experience. The only reason this place is even getting 2 stars is because it's spacious and one of the more aesthetically pleasing salons in the area. Came on Tuesday around noon. Was pretty packed already. No receptionist to greet me but there was a clipboard where you put down your name and what service you'd like. I only wait 10min., if that. Someone came to get me and told me to pick a color. I did and she led the way to a massage chair. We had some difficulty communicating since she didn't speak English very well. She was nice and efficient but overall, crappy job. The water was on the cooler side of lukewarm. She didn't do a thorough job of: pushing back the cuticles, cutting down the cuticles, buffing the nail so that it's smooth or applying the polish. This was a regular pedicure, nothing special. She didn't properly "seal" the tip of your nail with the colored polish or the top coat so it will likely chip in a few hours. The coats are not even and she missed the sides of several nails. It was NOT worth $18 + $5 tip. Really disappointed with the quality of work so likely will not be back. The only thing this place has going for them is that it looks nice and it's huge so it doesn't feel cramped. read more

The nail techs do a fabulous job (their review is 5/5). My issue here is more with the essentially non-existent front staff. I had gone in as an appointment one evening for a manicure/pedicure and was not greated by anyone. I had sat down after mentioning to the nearest tech that i am here for an appointment and wait a nebulous 15 minutes while others came in and also waited. Again the nail techs all did a fabulous job, i just hope for this business to create more of a front desk positon. read more

I paid $91 for this disaster last night, not to mention I got to the salon at 5 and EILEEN was done at 8:30. And she was so mad I gave her "only" $13 dollar tip that she ignored me and acted like she didn't understand what I was saying. Very happy with my manicure despite that I barely have nails they did a great job . Helen had started on my manicure but had to have Lisa finish up because there was an upset client who didn't like the fact she had to wait . She had an appointment but left to get her hair done and later when she came back she was upset that clients was taken after her . Rude rude rude ! All these Chinese businesses are loosing their customers to these new young entrepreneurs/nail techs because they lack good customer service skills ! I was excited to try this salon because the reviews! I went in sat with this woman told her I wanted acrylic tips with gel and instead she started to apply I believe it was uv gel not sure but different from what I asked. I immediately told her that's not what I wanted so she got an attitude and continued to do my nails with an attitude and be aggressive. She then cut two nails too short and had to extend them and was even more upset! How is that my fault you cut them too short? Aside from that I didn't hate my nails so I came back for a fill in. Another woman took me this time, After 30 min she tells me to get up because someone else will do my nails I asked why? She said "I forgot I had an appointment" ....... ummmmm ok? I sat waiting for the man who I believe is the owner very very nasty man! After sitting for 15 min I asked them is he going to attend to me ? He stormed up the stairs and yelled at me "you have to wait I'm on an important phone call" Ummmmm excuse me !?
