Picked up dinner this afternoon for the family and decided on J & J's Fish and Chicken in Gary, Indiana near Hard Rock casino. The service has always been great and today I was served by Ms. Brandy. I ordered a Shrimp dinner, catfish steaks (3) dinner and a combo meal with catfish and shrimp. All the dinners came with fries,coleslaw, bread and sauce (hot & mild). Orange roughy, cod, superior lake fish, whole catfish yumm!!!! I ordered oyster and cod combo. Came with bread fries and coleslaw. And their coleslaw is realllly good! The Boy ordered cod fish meal then a small gizzard. He got 3 pcs of fish then the gizzards order were huge!! Thought maybe he gave us large.. not sure. But the money worked out for the small. Everything was super good here. The tables are sort of old and broken but we are in Gary. Also thick glass covers the counter area of ordering hehe. First of all every time I'm in Indiana I go here. It's a little ghetto in there but so worth going. I usually get the combo platter of chicken fingers( so good) and catfish with fries. Heavy on the lemon pepper. I've been at least 10 times and they never disappoint. Price are very reasonable. read more

This spot is what I call a hood gem because it's the type of place that has food with a down home feel and appeal. So I got three things Jumbo Shrimp it was well seasoned and very meaty, and juicy it came with seasoned fries, white bread, and sauce. I also got the Perch it was well seasoned, crispy and good, last I got the wings my favorite. The wings are big juicy, crispy, and well seasoned. I've been coming here for years the food is good ( I stick with jumbo shrimp and catfish ) occasionally a pizza puff with fries! The food is great it is a shit hole they do have bulletproof glass it's in the hood but there's also two truckstops here plenty of security between the tomb and the cops to come by often so don't be scared. Sadly I noticed something about the reviews the only bad reviews take it or for those who got their feelings hurt because they thought the person at the store was rude to them. You sad Poor little people stop being such drama queens! Don't step up to the window until you've looked on the board seen what you want then when you ready walk up or wait in line. This is the best JJ's. I love this location to get some fresh perch, wing dinner and jumbo shrimp. I haven't been in a while but used to frequent a few years ago when I used to drive 18 wheelers. They are next to a Pilot Travel center and across from Travel Centers of America or as truckers call it, the TA. They are also right off of the highway going from or coming to Chicago. There's a small sit down area, but most people order to go because they have called ahead. The service is okay, after all, people only give you what you give them attitude wise. Just drove here from California. I love fish and chips and was so happy to see this place. Truck stops usually have the same horrible things to eat but not around this TA. It was DELICIOUS and the woman that took my order was very nice! She suggested the combo that came with two piece COD fish 10 medium sized shrimp (more flavor than jumbo) and fries with Cole slaw. Based on the reviews I thought I'd stroll over from the TA to get some chicken and fish. I ordered a small perch dinner and a small chicken leg dinner. The perch was decent enough, no complaints but nothing special either. The chicken legs were sad though. They were small, overcooked and dry. I took the breading off one and took a picture. I ate nothing off the leg before the picture, just took the breading off. The fries were ok as long as you don't mind 1 inch pieces. The dinners each included 2 slices of bread and coleslaw. Since this place was referred to us by our family while visiting in Gary, we thought we would try it out. Perfectly Fried (Perch) Fish! Surrounded by a crispy batter and juicy through and through! Just left us salivating for more and more! We were somewhat afraid that they might not give us enough fries to go along with our fish but when we open the box, we were proven to be wrong! We also noticed that the restaurant possessed a vast aray of delectable looking deserts and couldn't pass it by. So we tried two cakes (German Chocolate and Red Velvet). To say the least...we were not impressed! Both cakes did not have enough chocolate taste and the icing on the red velvet was plain and not even cream cheese...Yuk! This is the main reason for this place receiving only 4 stars. Fortunately, we saved the BEST for last! We also tried this pudding/ice cream-like desert which left an everlasting smooth, banana-fruity flavor in our mouths in which we never wanted the taste to ever leave! It was called "Manna"! My husband drives a semi and I travel with him. We stopped at the TA plaza across the street from this place. I saw it from our parking space and had to try it.
