I'm glad I didn't read the Yelp reviews before trying this place on Door Dash. This place was surprisingly good and we were very satisfied! We ordered Mesquite Rotisserie Grilled Chicken, Brisket Burnt Ends, Frenchy fries, Mac and Cheese, and Corn Bread. Both meats were REALLY GOOD. The tenderness and flavor were on spot. The sides were a bit disappointing. Frenchy fries were a bit overdone and Mac and cheese was very mushy and bland. The corn bread was good though. I ordered the 1/2 Rotisserie chicken with 2 sides. I got the cornbread and explosion potatoes. The chicken and the cornbread was great. Not a fan of explosive potatoes at all, it had a weird aftertaste I did not like at all. The prices are bit expensive to as well. Definitely not all the time place to go, only once in while. Goodness gracious was this a tasty meal. Ordered lunch at work. I never seem to have luck with BBQ places but I wanted. To give them a try as they are a supporting business of my local Lions Club. Ordered the brisket sandwich meal with a side and a drink. Decently priced added an extra side and the total was about $20. Brisket was fork tender and piled high on a constanzo roll. For the side I went with sweet potato mash. It was fine but nothing special. The redeeming part was the homemade corn bread. So fluffy and sweet. I'm already planning the next time iorder. read more

I found out what J & L stands for. It's apparently Juicy & Long. (shrug). I didn't rate it as scary-low as some of the Buffalo food trucks, and that is because it wasn't awful, and it wasn't TOO overpriced unlike some of the others. If you read any of my other Buffalo area food truck reviews, you know that I think the standard of food truck food here is extremely disappointing bar a few exceptions (Whole Hog, some Rochester ones that come to town sometimes), and worse most of them are freakishly overpriced, but this one is decent. Comparing it to Marty's Meats of Rochester and Whole Hog of Buffalo, which are both delicious 5s for me (as long as you stick to the regular pulled pork), this place could not possibly score more than a 3, because in comparison the pulled pork is bland, and normal, and decidedly average. By the way, I tried it at the Food Truck Rodeo at Eastern Hills Mall, I think, but it's also at Larkin Square in summers, and of course they have an actual restaurant location, I do believe. Ordered wing and rib combo from food truck Tuesday today and ribs where dry dry dry no smoke flavor no smoke ring,almost seems like they are slow Cooked in a oven or alter sham. SMOKED WINGS again where's the SMOKE???? Although no smoke flavor and a tad to much salt in rub these where by far the best thing from the combo and that's being nice. fries u can tell are cut then fried right away instead of being cut washed balnch cooked then final cook the way a fresh cut fry should be. I'm gonna get to the point here. Ribs were tough, overcooked. And it seemed like they left the membrane on the rib which is chewy and unappetizing. Pulled pork was okay. The sauce they toss it in is a little too overpowering and you can barely taste the pork. The sauce and sweet and savory, and it's good. But, way too much sauce in it. Brisket burnt ends were also overwhelmingly salty, just too much salt. These really have potential as they were tender, melt in your mouth fatty, and cooked as well as burnt ends can get. Just a disappointment on the over seasoning. The Mac and cheese was boring. It lacked a lot of flavor and it was watered down cheese sauce. The fries were decent and the cornbread was okay. Overall, I just do t think it was worth the money and I want to like this place because I love bbq. But I think I'm going to hold off on this place for a while. read more

My law firm recently had a picnic catered by this business. Our selection included chicken (on the bone), pulled pork and mac n cheese. Let me tell you, this is some high quality BBQ. The pulled pork and chicken were perfectly smokey. The chicken was so juicy it fell off the bone and the flavor was absolutely unbelievable. They slow cook their meat for so long that the flavor really seeps into the meat. Although the chicken wasn't particularly large, the flavor more than compensated for the lack of meat on the bone. The mac and cheese, while decent, was a little *too* smokey. I appreciate the meat being smokey, but leave the smoke out of my mac and cheese or I'll have to drown it in Frank's hot sauce (which, unfortunately, was not handy at the time). Another con in terms of catering service: when they delivered the pulled pork they did not pull it apart. We had to do that ourselves. Not sure if this is normal protocol for a BBQ caterer but it was pretty inconvenient for us. My colleague ended up with grease all over her hands. read more

I grabbed some lunch from J&L's food truck on the way in to work. It beat the cafeteria, but that's not really high praise. The menu had only three options. Pork sandwich, pork bomber, and a chicken sandwich. I went with the pork sandwich for $8. I assume the bomber was just more of the same on a sub roll. Two minutes later I was handed a styrofoam box and off I went. When I got to work I opened the box to find a decent portion of fries and a sandwich wrapped in paper. It was so greasy it was soaked through in all directions. I opened it to find that there really wasn't much BBQ sauce to speak of. I would have added more had I known while still at the truck. I found it mediocre tasting and overly greasy. My recommendation if you see this truck near your office is to just drive on by. read more

I met these folks at their Food Truck recently and got invited to the restaurant. On my way back from a hike in Buckhorn Island my 6 year old and I stopped for some lunch. The owners were on site, personable, friendly, and happy. The location is unassuming and almost camouflaged in a little strip of shops. Good thing for the GPS and the black and flames food truck parked outside. We both ordered the pulled pork lunch special and had a seat. In no time at all the owner brought our food and it was delicious. Even my six-year old who was willing to try another variety of pulled pork sandwich since she doesn't care for spicy bbq sauces was impressed. Soft, tender, and delicious very little or no sauce is needed. Even better, my little one lost an already very loose tooth. The owner kindly played tooth fairy and gave her a dollar for good luck. You just can't beat family-friendly, kindly owners combined with the best barbecue in the area. This is a must visit location. Just go. read more

In our small little city, there are not many places that offer BBQ, and if they do it's usually not that good. This place like many others has a few items on their menu that you could snuff for sure (baked beans are rough, mac n cheese tends to be dry) but then their actual BBQ items are pretty legit. I'm a big fan of their pulled pork platter - it's very tender, the smokey flavor is locked in the meat and the sauce just puts the taste over the top. I especially love to order it with their cornbread which is more of a northern version with the sort of glaze that sweetens it right up. The chicken is a definite alternative for me, their ribs are alright, nothing really special but they'll hit the spot if you're in the mood for them. This review is for the food truck. I tried J&L at a food truck fundraiser last week. I had the pulled pork sandwich with corn bread and it cost about $9. I thought the cost was a little high compared to the portion size. The pulled pork was fine. My first impression was that there was not much sauce on it, but the flavor was good. It wasn't the best pulled pork I've ever had and it wasn't the worst, it was somewhere in the middle. The corn bread came pre-wrapped in saran wrap. I was a little thrown off by that but when I opened it it was pleasantly good--moist and sweet enough that you didn't need butter. All in all, the food wasn't bad but I don't see myself choosing them over another food truck if I had the choice. read more

Get your wetnaps ready! Well, if you're having the ribs or chicken, that is. This some good, down home, sticky-style BBQ that even my native southern boyfriend enjoyed! We wanted to try as much on the menu as we could, so we each got a platter: he the Combo (ribs, brisket, and pulled pork) and I the Ribs and Chicken. For sides we sampled the potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, and macaroni and cheese. I also got a couple extra servings of sauce on the side, and orders of cornbread. I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about, to be honest. After reading them, we were a little wary about how the food would be, but as BBQ lovers we wanted to try it ourselves. We each thought that the meal would end up being mediocre, but we were wrong. All of the meat we tried was good, but if we had to choose the least favorite, it would be the brisket. It was fine - had a nice beefy flavor, but compared to the other choices it just wasn't as good. The pulled pork was juicy and flavorful; the chicken and ribs each fell of the bone, though one order of the ribs was done better than the other in its succulence. For the sides, all were good but the standout was the potato salad, and I really liked to the baked beans as well. The cole slaw was average to good, and the mac and cheese was clearly homemade but could have used a little more seasoning? If we go back, I'll likely get the same thing I got this time, and my boyfriend said he'll either get ribs or a pulled pork sandwich. Oh, me, too, really. :) The biggest clunker of the meal was the cornbread. Though I ended up liking it more as I finished it, it was way too sweet and moist somehow. If we're talking real southern BBQ, the folks, cornbread is NOT sweet! A couple other criticisms: include a piece of cornbread with the platters, and don't charge for extra sauce. Otherwise I felt that we got a good value. We didn't eat cheap, but the food was more than satisfying and we didn't feel ripped off by any means. The location is sort of out of the way in a less than pretty part of town, but the inside of the place is cute and the parking is convenient. As for my southern boyfriend? When I asked him how it rated authenticity-wise to real southern BBQ, he lamented, "Nothing is like the south. That's just how it is." Went here on a drive-by whim. Boy was I disappointed. There was no line at the peak of business park lunch hour, maybe that should have been my first clue. The menu was smallish but with a few BBQ staples, beef brisket sandwich with side (which I got), pulled pork sandwich with side, BBQ chicken sandwich, "Brunswick stew", and then a surprise dish, garbage plate. When I asked about the garbage plate the woman very plainly and monotone listed its few ingredients ( the stew, fries, and I think cheese?). Well, ok, what's in the stew?? Pulled pork, sausage, it's spicy. Not exactly sell in' it. So, I'll just stay basic right. Sides were fries, Mac and cheese, or potato "explosion"... Not sure where an explosion oils get me I went with Mac and cheese. I came out quickly, I think because none of t seemed very fresh, especially the Mac and cheese. The noodles were mush, like leftovers that had been reheated with some of those hardened pieces of cheese even, yuk. The Mac also lacked flavor. Brisket was good, tender and a hint of smoke but not too much. Sauce? None. Not even as an option! So, I took it home and added some of my favorite from One Eyed Jack's BBQ in Lockport. The bun was also fresh and good. Drinks? I didn't see any, and I certainly wasn't offered any. I won't be back to try any more of their BBQ. I don't eat at many barbeque places, but I can dream of better barbeque elsewhere. First of all, let's talk about the service. When confirming our order via phone, we were rushed into giving an order as quickly as possible. Why? J and L is a short-staffed, stressful environment. The woman on the phone was happy to take our order, but clearly under some sort of distress while doing so. When picking up the order, this was only confirmed by the one person cooking the food and the one person taking the order. Unhappy workers will eventually lead to a high turnover rate. Despite keeping costs low, this will, in the long run, hurt the business. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with two sides: mac and cheese and beans. The pulled pork was way too dry for me and I ended up grabbing the barbeque sauce from the fridge and dowsing it with much more. The meat itself wasn't bad but when put together on the bun, it just didn't do anything for me. Wasn't sloppy enough and they didn't hone in on the sauce which is a crucial part of the pulled pork sandwich. The mac and cheese wasn't quite satisfying and cheesy enough. The baked beans were the best part. I tried consuming a rib that was leftover for me, but I ended up gnawing on a bone with very little meat on it. I was completely disappointed. The cornbread wasn't sweet, it was just smothered in butter and got my hands all greasy. Not so fun. Other family members enjoyed their meal, but service was unacceptable. Hopefully at least on this end, J and L improves. If you have a bottle of barbeque sauce on hand, the pulled pork isn't bad, it's just not wet enough. Get the baked beans with it. Other than that, here's to hoping that some improvements are made in the long run. read more

(This review is for their food truck) I've had this a few times now along with coworkers and the consensus is very meh. Ok, first, the BBQ sandwich. Basically a grilled bbq half chix breast on a costanzo's roll. Is there BBQ sauce good? Yeah, it's not bad. It's smokey with a little spice. Had the "exploded potato" with it, not bad either. 2nd time - Steak slider with fries, mac & cheese. The steak, I want to say is cheap flank. It's fatty and almost jerky tough. It has a ridiculous amount of peppercorn/salt seasoning on it too. The mac & cheese, was like Kraft but not all the noodles were cooked, some were overcooked. The fries, same as the Mac and the steak. Loaded with seasoning and inconsistently cooked. Now here's the kicker, I didn't pay either time. Free food is good, right? Not always. I decided to try this place after it got a favorable write up in the Gusto. I love BBQ and was pretty excited to try a new place. I have to say, I was super disappointed. I ordered the brisket platter and it came with two sides. I opted for the cole slaw and their specialty dish called a potato explosion. First off, I'm not one to tout large portions, but for $13 the amount of brisket I got was really rather small. The brisket arrived in one of those little paper boats, soaking in some kind of liquid. I've NEVER had brisket served to me in liquid! It might have been how they reheated it for service? Regardless, it was gross. I couldn't eat it. Brisket usually comes sliced against the grain and has a wonderful all day smoke taste to it. This was chunks of meat, a lot of griss/fat, floating in liquid. The sides were presented in tiny little styrofoam dishes. When I uncovered the cole slaw, I discovered it was grey in color. I was afraid to eat it. I smelled it and it didn't smell like it was bad, but I wasn't going to chance it. No cole slaw I've ever had was grey. The potato explosion is like a loaded baked potato salad, served warm. If I wasn't as hungry as I was, I wouldn't have eaten this. It didn't have a homemade taste to it. It had like an institutional boxed taste to it, if that makes any sense. It appears they store the food in these little styrofoam containers and heat them to order, as the bottom of my container was scorched, probably from reheating in the microwave. My companion had the 1/2 chicken and she said it was good, although she didn't eat all of it and didn't opt to take it home. I almost wonder if she was just being polite, because I had chosen the restaurant. The woman that waited on us at the counter was super pleasant and our order came out in a very reasonable time. The restaurant was chilly and the radio playing in the front was a little loud for the small space. Unfortunately, I would never go back and wouldn't recommend this place either. Brisket is one of my favorite dishes to order from a BBQ joint and theirs was just not right. I wouldn't be willing to travel that distance again to try anything else. read more

Not happy with what I purchased way under seasoned, dry cubed pork wtf? with sauce containers the size of something that would carry a precious cargo like a one carat diamond but the sauce is far from being precious. I wish they had taste buds so they could season things properly. The place appears clean and the people are very polite and it seems like they are sincere about trying to provide a good product but they are falling way short of really lip smacking drooling mop my face honey with a towel BBQ like I love. Mediocre doesn't cut it for me..... learn about injection, dry rubs , brining etc.. and try buying quality herbs and spices in bulk and grinding weekly to provide a more pronounced flavor, a little sea salt goes a long way. I mean the pork tastes like it was taken from the kryo packing and put on the pit with nothing. So I will grace their threshold again with hope in my taste buds and try something different on their menu and hope they please. Another gripe I have is the lack of select home made sauces . But for the 12.00 I paid here I got a tiny (not much bigger than a kids hamburger at McDonalds) flavourless brisket sandwich w/ 3 little pieces of dry meat on it and paid extra for a little soggy pc of corn bread. .. I heard the microwave at least twice. Not sure if it's all kept frozen ? For me being one of the only people in there at noon on a Friday, I can't see them running a shortage ? I've been to many BBQ places down south and around major cities. And I have never had anything small,soggy and blah like this before. I don't think Guy from triple D will be by anytime soon ... I work near this place. So I said to a few co-workers we should try it for lunch. We called the order in ahead 40mins. We got there, the place wasnt even busy and we had to wait 10mins for our order to come out. two of us got the rib platter. The ribs were not anything special, the sides weren't either. The other guy got the bbq burger. He said it wasnt bad. But for the price of the rib platter the portions were skimpy and the food wasnt very good. I was pretty disappointed. Tried their food truck recently at small food truck rodeo. Was $9 for a brisket sandwich, $1 more to add fries. Sandwich was on a small soft Costanzo's hamburger-sized bun, but I could have probably stuffed all the meat in the middle, closed the roll, and you wouldn't have been able to tell there was any meat on there. Was about three slices of brisket the thickness of roast beef from a fast food place. No outside crust, no thick sliced meaty BBQ. It was almost shredded and holey/see through from the thin slicing. No other toppings/sauce added on. It tasted ok, but nothing distinctive or super flavorful that made it upgrade to slow smoked BBQ vs. something I could make at home. The price was my biggest concern. I had a brisket sandwich from another mobile BBQ place recently at a charity event and it was stuffed to the max, delicious, came with peppers and onions, and I paid less. Disappointing. Fries were fresh cut, but a little too done. PLEASE can places list their items as "seasoned fries", and give us the option if we don't want the seasoning? While I don't care for seasoning, this stuff wasn't too bad, but was way too salty. Surprised I got as many as I did compared to the size of the sandwich. read more

Awful, awful, awful! If I could give this place negative stars I would! The food has absolutely no flavor. You have to slather everything with bbq sauce and then everything tastes the same, so why bother having multiple items on the menu. My brisket was flavorless and sitting in a pile of liquid (it looked like water). The macaroni and cheese tasted like cardboard and the corn bread, which was the best tasting thing on my plate was completely soggy. And the price was outrageous! The bun was super soft, almost squishy when I unwrapped the sandwich, like it had been microwaved...The cornbread wasn't my favorite. It was moist to the point that it smelled like margarine. We have ordered food from here many times and they never disappoint. Finally a place that knows how to really cook brisket! The sandwiches melt in your mouth. We've tried most of their menu items and loved everything (even their sides). Our order is always correct and the owner and other employees are very nice and helpful.
