Favorite spot when we come to Sterling!!! Huge portions and priced just right. Always busy but not too loud

This is my favorite restaurant! Really recommend. The good is delicious. And Erica is a really good waiter! Definitely come here.

Greasy spoon. I come from a restaurant family that owned a greasy spoon in Denver back in the 60's and 70's and so I say those two words with much affection IF the said g.spoon is a good un. This is a good un. They won't win any James Beard awards or be in any magazines touting there haute cuisine but they sling hash browns and eggs, biscuits and gravy, meatloaf and canned green beans just like most of the good g-spoons did back in the day. Food and overall service was a strong 4 Star but grumpy initial seating and pay portion of the service brought score down to a low 3 for me. Despite shortcomings, The food came quickly, portions were large, decently presented, and tasted fairly fresh. The overall atmosphere seemed to be a bit acidic but may have been just the early hour. Great food! Driving through and looking for food, and I love all day breakfast so decided to give this place a try. Ordered steak and eggs, was more than enough food for a very decent price (like 10 bucks) as it included hash browns and toast (or pancakes but I like butter cuz I'm into that stuff). Service was fast, courteous, and overall no complaints. I also ordered coffee, it was pretty regular. Would come back again if I didn't live literally 900 miles away. read more

We stopped here on our way across country. :) very very happy with our decision. We got their chili and it was bomb. Also had sweet potato fries which were nice and crunchy but chewy and their ham and bean soup which tasted like my grandma made it. So good. We only had a few things but what we did have was so good. I'm a fan of mom and pop diners and Doug Y pegged this one perfectly. We'd been at the North Sterling Reservoir Park - beautiful in November - and popped into J&L for a Saturday Night Special. Not that kind. The chicken fried steak kind. O.K. we'd eaten at Linger on Thursday and this was a 180 degrees squared from that. We started with an excellent ham and bean soup and were intrigued by the ham in the green beans. Jazzed up the canned variety. The service was friendly, ambiance very non pretentious and the food showed imagination. Tres was wrong about Cisco Foods; the stevia in the raw packet said Shamrock Foods. Visit J&L Cafe and the North Sterling Reservoir Park for a piece of Americana far from the madding crowd. read more

I ate here for lunch on Saturday, 5/4/2019. I really enjoyed the local Cafe environment where the waiters and patrons are locals. I enjoyed a simple cheese burger and side salad. The service was very friendly. The Cafe is a bit run down and could use an upgrade on the booth seats. read more

Let me preface my review by saying that I take the Star rankings seriously. If the food, service and venue are merely "good" then it deserves and gets 3 stars from me. If it's exceptional then that's worth 4 stars. It get's 5 stars if "as good as it gets" or the best I've ever had. That being said, the food, the service and the venue are good, not exceptional and certainly not the best I've ever had when it comes to restaurants of this type. But, that's not a bad thing. I had breakfast there this morning and I've got no complaints - the eggs, the hash browns and the chicken fried steak was good as was the service. Would I go back? Sure, and it will probably be for breakfast again tomorrow. Just don't expect anything but decent home-style cooking - just like grandma used to make. read more

I am overly shocked on how great this place is! We walked in and it's a quaint restaurant right off one of the main road. Diamond in the ruff. I could be overly excited but my food was delicious. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The gravy wasn't home made but was close to perfect. My chicken tenders where moist and crunchy at the same time. The waffle was humongous! I put my two over easy eggs on my waffles and cut up my tenders and throughly enjoyed my breakfast. Their honey mustard was to die for and I would have liked a giant one to go but, I will take what I can get. read more

Thank you Roger Buchleiter for telling us about this gem. I am afraid to use the word perfect too often at the risk of sounding disingenuous. But EVERYTHING was perfect. We had Rocky Mountain Oysters for an appetizer, awesome! My beef and barley soup might have been more stew than soup, but the flavor was spot on. We ordered the fish basket and again perfection, our fries were light and crispy!!!! Fish was delicate and fried to...wait for it.... perfection. Even the Cole slaw was perfect. Now our waitress Doris was fun, attentive and efficient. However, she did frighten me when she almost denied us the homemade pie for dessert because we saved half of our supper so we could have some pie. Thankfully she caved in and let us have pie. On a final note, perfect food, perfect service, perfect atmosphere, perfect experience. Thank you! read more

I found this cafe on Yelp and decided to try a locally own restaurant instead of a fast food chain. I'm so glad I did, COVID-19 has hurt so many families over the last few months and I was shocked by what this local restauranteur was doing for his community. I strolled in on a Monday evening and I was greeted by the staff all wear mask and gloves but they were very friendly. I ordered the liver and onions because that is what they are known for....it was GREAT. While I was sitting at the counter I over heard a conversation about Free Meals...so asked about the Free Meals. The waitress shared with me that the owner knew so many people that were hurting and food was a luxury in some cases that he decided to offer free meals. The estimate that was share with me was around 10,000 Free Meal have been provided to this community by a local Hero!! If you're in town or a local spend your money with someone who gives back to his community. I applaud the owners and the staff. Thank You all so much this was a joy to see read more

We stayed overnight in Sterling on a long road trip, and this was the best possible start to the day. Highly recommend the Southern Style breakfast! Listed as a sampler but comes with more than enough food. Plus, we came during the busy Sunday morning hour and waited only a few minutes to be seated - perks of small town diners! Stopped for breakfast on our way back home on a Monday. Happened to be buy one get one half off meals. Amazing service, super friendly, phenomenal food, and very large portions. A little hole in the wall Cafe that is well worth your stop off the beaten path! Beats the tar out of eating drive through fast food, it likely will cost you less and only add a few min extra to your time. Best restaurant for at least 150 miles north south east or west. Incredibly affordable, family owned, fresh food. Best Reuben I've ever had. Really nice clean bathrooms. Swung in because it's off the road and we were passing though. First off, hostess and waitress had fantastic service. Then, the prices of the food were very reasonable if not cheap compared to what we are used to paying. We came on a Friday night at 6:30 so of course we expected it to be busy. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table. When the hostess sat us, she informed us they were short staffed and it would "be awhile" ... It was! Probably 10 minutes before anyone took our drink order.
