I keep going back here. This month I was here twice. The staff is exceptionally friendly and youthfully enthusiastic. It is reliable fare. I order things I get nervous about and then wonder why I was nervous. Plus, they always have a lot of different pies. The specials and the menu items are predictably American Diner. The pot roast sandwich was absolutely amazing, with horseradish and au jus. The hamburger vegetable soup was hot, delicious and loaded with good stuff. Good portion sizes, reasonable prices. Warm cozy small town feeling, lots of folks who know each other. They had senior specials and treats for the kids. Lots of daily specials. Ok place. I was impressed with their menu. And excited about ordering the omelette with lots of veggies and cheese. Who knew the cheese was nacho sauce. I wanted nacho sauce I would have gone to my kids baseball game. DISGUSTING! The menu should have reflected the type of cheese. One would assume "cheese" would mean a dairy product. read more

I was surprised to read all of the five star reviews on this place. The interior was quite run down and dirty and the omelettes were sub par at best; but I continued to eat the omelette, that was until I found strands of hair underneath it. Other than the hair in my omelette, this place was 3/10. read more

Nice to belly up to a counter to put on the ol feedbag. Breakfast always tastes better on a plate or platter-not from a plastic wrapper in a C-store. Looked for a Sterling restaurant that checked all my boxes.Did not check 2.They had me at Liver and Onions.My wife and I are 2 people who love it and no where have I had better than J&L.Talk about tender.Damn....I want it again Tuesday. Service was wonderful. Small oops with no baked potatoes ,got it in 5 minutes, but overall a really great meal and a great place to remember when we get to NE Colorado again. read more

I still think all of their food is amazing, but I strongly recommend their fried chicken! I had it tonight and it was amazing!!! They do use instant mashed potatoes though :( which I'm not big on personally, and their vegetables are canned. read more

I can't even rent this place it is horrible I am waiting over an hour for submissive OK breakfast with my family when doing so supposedly my name is called six times and she proceeded to seat the owner proceeded to see six different families before my after I had to wait in the hour then when I asked what the problem was she said well you didn't hear your name being called she was very rude and just listen to me and condescending and when I asked if there was something wrong and why she was being so rude to me she said she wasn't being rude if I simply didn't hear my neighbor called and discriminating matter she gave me a dirty look and proceeded to turn her back to me as I still continuing to try to talk to her to her this was the owner and her cohost at the counter in the 12 years that I have lived here I've always dying here for dinner lunch and breakfast with my family today is the last day that I will be a patron at the Janelle Café due to the discrimination disrespectful and rude and condescending behaviors of the owner and the people that work thereI didn't even want to give this restaurant a star is completely horrible and the attitude to take three people in a small town really really considering that small town smoke or helping considerate and kind these people I don't know where they came from read more

I find it difficult to understand how this restaurant rated 4 stars. It was by far one of the worse places where we have eaten. The place is a dump; dirty and full of flies. There is nothing worse than having to swat the flies off your food and your hair. The pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes were so over smothered with white gravy it slid off the plate trying to find the food. I couldn't wait to get out of there. read more

This was a breakfast stop on our way home to Omaha. The food was excellent and the servers were attentive and nice.

Three and a half stars. This place is loaded with comfort food. It lacks in healthy alternatives. I don't eat factory meats, so when it comes to meatless options they are very limited. Heading for I80, we stopped for a quick breakfast and were able to accomplish just that. The staff were friendly and you could tell this diner has been there a while--it was like clockwork. It seemed like a lot of local families when out of there way to eat there which says something positive. The pancakes were good and they knew what I meant when I asked for eggs scrambled soft. I missed giving the 4th star because once our waitress placed our food we never got coffee refills and had to hunt her down for our check. Boom! This place does not suck. If you voted for Trump you will love this place. People who eat here have jobs and work hard for their money. They should rename this place the "Blue Collar Cafe". The food is great, the prices are reasonable, service is friendly and fast. read more

I love anywhere with breakfast all day. At J&L, there is pride taken in the quality of service and food. Booths are comfy and it has that old American diner feel. Not too overpriced either. Definitely stop by if you're in town. read more

Great spot for a road trip breakfast. Been here a few times now on the way to NE and SD. Best breakfast spot for many miles and definitely worth the stop. But after years of dirty looks and bad attitude from the older female front hostess/cashier I have decided never to return. There are too many friendly similar price options in Sterling.
