My bathtub drain was plugged up. We had to use a wet/dry vacuum to get the water out after each shower. I tried to root it myself with a cheap auger from Home Depot, but the auger broke, and I couldn't get it out. So, I needed that removed and the drain unplugged. The property owner made a call, and J&M arrived within 2 hours. Jesus first went to manually remove the auger, which he did within 5 minutes. Then he, and his son Angel, went to work trying to clear the tub from the tub's overflow. After about 30 minutes with no success, Jesus climbed on the roof and went through a pipe located up there (not something a plumber would typically do). Within a few minutes he had removed the blockage. Both Jesus and his son were kind and professional. They were easy to talk to, and gave us a good price considering the quick response on a Saturday afternoon. I would highly recommend them. Called J&M for a second opinion. Jesus answered and said he would come out and take a look. Arrived in 25 minutes, as he said he would. Snaked the line with a root cutter and, with a bit of effort, cleared the line. Prompt, polite, competent and reasonably priced. Couldn't ask for more! It had been some years since we ran a snake down our rear yard drainage pipes and with the heavy rains this January, the patio drains were starting to back up, not keeping pace with the heavier rainfall. I spotted a recommendation for this family plumbing company on NextDoor and called right away at 9 AM. Jesus Sr. took my call and they were able to swing by within 2 hours to evaluate the job. The owners, Jesus Sr. and Jesus Jr., a fine young man in his late 20s or 30s, and plenty fit and energetic, actually came 10 minutes early! They patiently waited outside until I got dressed in my rain gear and met them outside. They sized up the landscaping drainage situation and analyzed the plumbing and the clean out that was available. All in heavy rain! :) Both father and son worked hard and steady for 90 minutes, including doing some shovel work into garden spots to locate the plumbing and clean outs. And they quickly dispatched a very large power auger and snaked out the critical drain pipe, blocked by Oleander roots, that hooked up to the county drainage swale on the other side of our rear yard fence. They did a great job and solved the problem efficiently, always polite and cheerful. 90 minutes later they were packed up and on the road and I even rounded up the payment with a gratuity for coming so quickly and putting our drainage system back in proper order to handle the heavy rain, during a downpour! My experience with J&M Contra Costa Rooter was very unpleasant. My tenant informed me that the bathtub faucet was leaking and did not stop even when she turned off the switch. A friend of hers nearby came to help and found that the issue was due to a broken cartridge that needed replacement. I had the same issue in two other units last year and hired a plumbing company (which I won't share the name here) to fix them for $325 and $350 (they encountered difficulty removing one of the cartridges, so an additional $25 was added for the extra fee, which seemed reasonable). So, I contacted that company, but unfortunately, they didn't have an available slot for the next day. So I created a project on Yelp, and J&M Contra Costa Rooter was the first company to reply. I didn't respond them first, because their rate was $250/hour, which seemed high for this type of plumbing work. Then they sent me another message saying, "Hi, I normally charge $250 an hour, but I can go take a look at the issue and give an exact estimate." Since they had good reviews on Yelp, I agreed. The next morning, the first call I received from them was that they had completed the work, and the total cost was $825. I was shocked because not only did they not give me an estimate, but the price was unbelievably high for a simple task of replacing a cartridge. When I asked the guy on the call about the cost for parts and labor and why he didn't provide an estimate before starting the work, he said he had informed my tenant the price, thinking she had told me. I was shocked again because I've known this tenant for 8 years, and I know she is a decent and reliable lady. I asked for the invoice to review the details, but the guy o the phone told me that I had to make the payment first before they could send it. He also said he could deduct $100 from the total. I guess I couldn't do anything but make the payment at that moment, I negotiated the price down to $700 and made the payment. After the call with them, I contacted my tenant, and she told me the following: "Jesus came and literally didn't listen to me when I told him it's cracked. He put all the old pieces back on! I then told you what he was trying to do, and you agreed that they needed to replace it. Jesus did not have the tools needed to remove the old cartridge and told me he had to call a friend who had the tool. It was about an hour later. They came in and were able to replace the piece within another 20 minutes at the most. He didn't say anything about the cost, and if he would've said $825, I would have known better than to have him proceed with the work." Later on, they sent me the receipt, stating that the part cost $295 and the labor cost was $405. I then requested the invoice for the cartridge they used to replace the broken one, as I wanted to see which store sells a bathtub cartridge for $295, given that the prices normally range between $20 to $50. I also questioned the labor cost because the total time they worked on this job was about 40 minutes. Even if rounded to an hour, it should be $250. What made me feel even worse is that they did not directly answer my inquiries or provide the invoice but instead blamed my tenant. As you can see from the attached photos, their response makes no sense and does not address my questions. Sorry for this lengthy story, but I hope my experience with this company may help you in making your choices if this company is on your list of options. read more

He and Edwin came out and explained what the plan was. They estabished what needed to be done and began running the snake. Our sewer line was clogged with roots, with sewer water coming up through our shower drain and seeping from underneath one of the toilets, ugh. We called J&M Rooter and arranged for Jesus to come assess the situation later that day. He got held up at one of his jobs, but he called to let us know he would arrive later than scheduled, and he did arrive at his re-scheduled time. We told him we didn't have an easily-accessible clean out, and he walked around the house to confirm. He gave us 2 options: to access the sewer line by removing and then re-installing a toilet, which would be labor-intensive but could be done by just him, or to access the sewer line via the roof vent, which would require him to call for a second person since one would work on the roof while the other would control the motorized snake from the ground. He gave us quotes for each option, for the toilet method a fixed price and for the roof vent method a fixed price based on hourly rates for 2 and an estimated 1 hour of work; we opted for the roof vent method. His second man (his dad) arrived shortly after Jesus called him; it was starting to get dark and they got right to work. After a while, they learned their 150' snake was not long enough to reach the clogged portion of the sewer line; fortunately they had a 50' cable extension in the truck. They had to pull the snake all the way back out, attach the extension, and try again. With the extension, they reached and successfully cleared the clog. All told, they spent over an hour and a half to clear the line, but Jesus honored his original quote and still took the time to pick up the small amount of roots/debris the snake had pulled out; Jesus even got his flashlight out to check the area and made sure it was as clean as it was originally. They did a great job, and both Jesus and his dad were personable and polite. read more

J&M helped me turn a pretty bad situation around in less than 24 hours, I managed to crack my shower valve inside the wall and was not able to turn the water back on to my condo. This all happened about 7pm and Jesus answered right away, came by to check out the issue within an hour. Very friendly, honest and up front. It was not a fix that would be able to happen that night but came back the next day and the whole job (cutting open a wall, cutting out broken valve and corroded piping and rebuilding the shower setup) only took about 3-1/2 hours. Pricing was very reasonable given the amount of work and rushed time frame I asked them to work in. My shower does not have a separate shut off valve so the whole condo had zero water until the work was completed. They were super friendly, very polite, quick and left a very clean workspace. Have used Jesus previously so felt comfortable calling him for 4 relatively simple items... 1. snake an outside irrigation drain line 2. install new kitchen faucet replacing old one with same type unit (almost exactly the same) 3. install new ball valve shut off on outside for irrigation line 4. replace irrigation controller in backyard. Results - 1. finished, no issue 2. Installed with a fair amount of difficulty and reversed hot vs cold water lines 3. after much difficulty installed the valve but had a serious leak - after engaging another plumber we found that he was trying to force fit and glue pvc with an electrical fitting not used for irrigation (incompatible for gluing) ...also left a pvc to pvc fitting leaking. Now I know what he was so quick to want to recover it with dirt and did not test it prior to leaving 4. Did not even try to replace it and no follow up to complete #4. .... charges were very high and the check I gave him was cashed immediately the same day (probably knowing I would stop payment). I can't say enough about the job J&M did with our drainage problem. I asked them to rooter out the drains as we had standing water on our pool deck, and after no success they had a camera investigate and then suggested a course of action. This involved digging .. LOTS of digging through our nasty clay soil to replace a 25' section of pipe. The crew worked HARD and never complained .. just got it done. They worked hard and fast over a few days to beat one of the big storms we had. I would not hesitate to recommend them - they were what you hope for in a vendor .. on time,reliable, hard working, fair and pleasant to work with!
