I'll say that this bar sucks simply because it's going to be my neighborhood bar and I don't want large crowds of douchey people or pretentious hipsters (non-pretentious hipsters OK) to show up. We arrived here for a night capper and gladly stayed until told to leave. The jukebox is older music, the bartender was a middle-aged pleasant woman whose name I forgot, and the patrons were a bit older. One middle-aged slightly annoying (really more amusing in my opinion) drunk guy and one chill regular on each side of us. Tall Stoli and soda was $4.50. Just a dive bar. I wouldn't go to J&M unless I was close by because, let's face it, there are still plenty of dive bars in Chicago where you won't have some dude wearing cheap cologne try to move close to you while you just want to have really, really cheap $1.75 PBRs on tap and chat with your friends. KRISTEN P You say you come to the bar often, I have been here a while and I've never seen you before, neither has my father and he has been here 43 years. I'm so happy for you that you have a white boyfriend named Zac, whom I/we also don't recall. Maybe you all have been in on another bartenders shift, we will definitely make sure they are carding more closely. Let me be clear in stating we DO NOT discriminate against people of color in our bar. We have many that are regulars. All races and religions are welcome here. Nothing was ever said regarding your skin color so I guess you just needed something to boost your false review. I never screamed across the bar. My father has more experience in that department so I asked him to double check. Your ID did not look like you and I was told you are not allowed to use temporary paper ID's. I didn't ignore you I was waiting for clarification. I never "decided" to serve you a beer. I was waiting for you to leave. The Good friend that you are still wanted to stay even though your paper ID friend wasn't supposed to. I did apologize to you that we couldn't serve you ladies and that it was nothing personal. I don't think you realize that we are liable for not carding underage drinkers. It was not a huge scene. This place is an awesome dive. Drink specials are great and the bartenders are always friendly. Coming on cold nights in the winter is nice because many times you will have most of the place to yourself ! read more

My brother now lives about a block away from J&M, so I've been there a couple of times now in visiting him. It's cash-only, but it's inexpensive. It has a couple of pool tables, and free pretzel rods are available in jars placed on the counter. I'm a fan and wish that I also lived a block away! read more

The staff was friendly but the alcohol prices was ridiculous! I had a mixed drink, basically a long island and it was 15$! Playing pool for an hour and 15 mins cost about 16$, on one certain pool table you ended up bumping into other players. Ilnot very impressed. read more

good place to get cheap beer and maybe even your ass kicked. this jewel of ukv serves up the cheapest taps and mixed drinks you'll find in a perfect dim, smokey, chicago dive atmosphere , but remember the regulars don't like you so tread lightly. read more

Best dive bar. I was out walking my dog one day when I stumbled upon this hidden gem. If you're a dive bar kinda person like myself, then it's love at first site. Be careful though, if you don't know where it's at, then other than the smoking crowd, you wouldn't know it was there. All great things are those that are hidden and what a surprise find this was. Hands down, it's probably my favorite bar in the city. From cheap beers to cheap pool to real people, even the "Tamale guy" is a regular! I've met 2 of the bartenders and what great women they are, not to mention the "jokester" from the south can always be hit up for a good joke. The juke box is full of great tunes. Although I'm a straight guy, even I was impressed with how clean the men's bathroom was haha. There was a time that this spot could've been considered my second home ('02-'05) and I'm still okay saying it's my favorite bar in Chicago. $5 pitchers of beer, virutually desolate, pissy old men, sports television, "can I get the key to the bathroom", aging metal heads that want to talk about your Cro-Mags shirt then go to the Exit with you and thrash around to the Accused like it's your last day on earth, stale chips, Maiden, Metallica, Journey and G n' R on the jukebox and tolerant patrons (usually CPD) shaking their heads at my sister and I dancing all up, down and over this place...and Teddy, the prince of the Ukranian Village with his reserved parking out front. I moved out of the neighborhood and came back a year ago and there was a DOOR GUY telling me they were at CAPACITY? Apparently the cool kids call it the "Secret Squirrel" now since it's brown and has no sign. I'd rather call it "Gateways" since it's opened opportunities for me like no other place on earth. Like....getting invited to a loft bondage party with a boxing ring where a pretty thick lesbian asks your boyfriend how he likes his pancakes in the morning while handing you a slice of pizza and a keg beer and pointing you in the direction of the just arrived polish stripper in the back room. Can't say i'm pleased that this place looks more like Rainblow than the old joint on a Saturday night, but i'll still go back if i'm in the neighborhood and talk about tattoos with Sam, the sweetest bartender/retired tattoo artist in this city. read more

I have lived a block from this joint for about five years... I've only been in there about a dozen times, both during a weekend afternoon, and late night. At first glance, it seems like a typical Ukie Village old man or Polish bar. But it's really more of a low-key decent bar, free of the expected poker machines or canned beer. Decent beer selection, decent pours on cocktails. The staff is pleasnt, it's always clean, the noise level is conversation-friendly, and the mood is generally pleasant. I come to this bar often but after today I won't be coming back. Whenever I come in I am with my white boyfriend who lives in the area, the moment I came in without him and with my roommate instead the bartender asks for my ID, I politely give it to her. Next thing I know she's screaming across the bar calling her dad over asking if the ID looks like me. Asking him to determine if it's me or not, mind you I'm asking her if she needs to see my credit card or DePaul ID to confirm it. She's ignoring me but she keeps asking her dad if the ID looks like me or not????? Let's not forget I was literally just there lastnight (there was a different bartender). The dad comes over questioning me and my roommate. They also gave her a hard time because she had a temporary ID. They wouldn't Let her use her temporary ID so we both decide to leave even after the bartender finally decided she would serve me a beer. A few minutes after we walk out the dad comes out and apologizes to my roommate saying that he just confirmed it with a police officer and she can use her temporary card and invites us back in. However, still no apology from the bartender even after her screaming in my face that my ID wasn't me. I can't believe they made such a huge scene when I was at this bar every other day over the summer as well as last night. It's disgusting & obvious they don't want any black people in this bar UNLESS you're with somebody white. LOL Do better. read more
