This J Crew is located in the Pioneer Place mall in downtown Portland. Women's is on the lower floor while Men's is upstairs. You can access the upper level inside the store via stairs. First off... I love J Crew. Good quality, good fits, and great attention to quality. Usually it's also known for its great service as well...except for this location. Every sales associate was essentially hipster scum that felt that only white women in their 40s and up deserved their attention. I almost gagged when this lady asked one of the male sales associates how a dress looked on her, and he just unenthusiastically kissed her ass, "Oh yeah, that shade...uh, really brings out the gorgeous color of your skin." I, on the other hand, just received scathing looks. What, am I too young/ethnic/poor-looking/generally not of the right class? I mean, really, does it take that much to even say hi? I seriously was AVOIDED here... One associate, Marina, purposely avoided me at least three times to assist some other customer (an older white woman, nonetheless). Even the manager on shift (the older gentleman with the gross haircut) first, avoided me, and then gave me a dirty look when I tried to get his attention for assistance. What the hell man? That's just textbook discrimination. The worst thing is, this is the only J Crew I've ever had this experience in. I would say worst retail experience ever...worse than Abercrombie, HO HO! The only saving grace is, sigh, your clothes... If only my mind wasn't so colonized, I might decide to *gasp*...not buy your clothes! Next time, I'll save myself the trouble and buy my shit online. There was a dress on sale at the J. Crew in Downtown Portland, Oregon in 2011. It wasn't my size. I did buy a pleated skirt for summer that I liked. I bought my then female boss, Wendy, a light pink hair clip (it is a flower) for her birthday later that year. She liked it. There was a selection of shoes, and I tried a pair of pumps with a stacked heel on. I still own those. They are a bright reddish-orange (the same hue as a California Poppy). I've worn them a few times around my Condominium. I talked with the manager and she told me that all of the items that were available at that Downtown location could be ordered online... and there were more sizes available online as well. I told her that I was looking for dresses for my mother. And a long sleeved blouse for my daughter's Adoptive mother, Rachel. She asked me what style of clothing my mother liked to wear... but, then someone else walked into J. Crew... and she went to ask that person what she could help them find. She walked that person upstairs. There was an issue at the Checkout with my debit card... and I was asked did I have a J. Crew credit card that I could use instead. I said it might be the stripe on my debit card that wasn't working. I did that thing where I run a piece of paper over my stripe on my debit card.... and it worked. I was told that there would be newer clothes in the next shipment. And someone else... a different employee arrived within a few minutes of the UPS delivery person. It was the next shipment. I looked at the items... but, they weren't my style. I told the Cashier that it's better to keep a plastic shopping bag at the register for when the older stripes on certain credit cards don't scan the first time. My Darling Husband said he wanted to go sometime to look at the Men's clothes as well (after I described the shirts and sweaters that I saw in the Men's section). I was told about the Rewards program at J. Crew by the Cashier as I was walking out the door. I told a potential friend of mine that I would meet her... and I didn't want to be later than she would want to wait. It turns out she was napping and I woke her up. She even had a line from her pillow on her face. She said she needed to eat dinner... so I walked to the Subway across from the Central Library to meet her. She asked what I bought. I showed her the shoes and she was impressed that they were on sale. She said she didn't know when the sales were so she didn't ever buy anything when she went shopping... she only browsed. read more

Bad service? Do you even open your mouth to ask for help? Yeah, I don't think so. So don't be too demanding and rate them lower if you are not asking for it. I guess I have it good when I know what I want. Well, why would you go to a place not knowing what you want? If you are clueless of what to get, do your research before stepping out of your house. It is embarrassing. It is like going to your class unprepared and you did not bring your homework and you are in your HOUSE CLOTHES. It is a simple clothing store. Do not make it complicated. All the guys that have helped me get something, the fit makes my ass looks big, tells me that the color looks drab with my skin tone deserves a huge THANK YOU. Do not hesitate and check out their sale rack. You'll never know what you'll get and often times, they have good items that are still on your size. Surprised at all the super negative reviews. I stopped by a week day after work, dressed up in business professional, and the female staff were super helpful and friendly. I found tons of sale merchandise in my size. Yes, they were helping older women, but they also paid attention to me. As big as the store is, the dressing rooms are tiny, even for NYC standards and the lights get really hot after a while. read more

Looks like I lucked out today, looking at my fellow reviews! I too was hesitant to enter J. Crew. There reputation on yelp for being unfriendly and snooty didn't seem like something I wanted to experience first hand. Oh but I went inside and the ladies were friendly and everything was 25% off. I got an extra battery for my iPhone for $30, which is definitely convenient while travelling. I also want to mention I felt comfortable when a staff member greeted me, and helped eased my fears of being ignored or treated with contempt at yet another upscale store. I also scored a sun hat, a pink leather belt, a summer scarf, and one of those compacted, reusable bags that you are great for sudden, last-minute grocery trips. I really appreciate the courtesy and respect I was treated with when I came to shop at this upscale store. I don't know if I just came in on a good day or if the snooty associates who mistreated my fellow reviewers have since moved on. But I do think I was treated very well and I was pleasantly surprised with my experience here and the prices. I'll probably return because I liked a lot of their office-wear and they have a sizable sale selection. That, and it seems some days they just have cross-the-board sales. read more

JCrew only stands to confirm that there's a pearl and cardigan-wearing Sloane within me and not too far from the surface. Located in Pioneer Place this is possibly smaller than other JCrew's but still has a reasonable range and selection of sizes. The sales associate helping me, Joe, was friendly and we had a great chat about Portland's coffee scene, grammar and his travels as an English teacher. It all made the experience that much better - and while it didn't make me want to buy anything over and above what I came in for (a plain white cotton tank top), it just further proved Portland folks are some of the nicest. Be sure to ask the sales associates if there's any daily deals, I managed to score an extra 20% off on the day I visited as they were having a spot sale (and no sales tax). read more

What wonderful and extraordinary help! Calling from out of town, I needed help purchasing the right tie for a relative who was flying into town later that day. Although I called minutes before the store officially opened, my call was answered, I was assisted in purchasing the right tie, and the store made sure the tie was properly picked up (I'm told the tie was perfect). I buy a lot of J Crew. This review comes from at least five different trips to the Pioneer Square store (I work a block away and often go in after work before getting on the Max). If go in with ugly hair or a bad outfit, I am completely ignored. Which is fine - it's not like I need to hear the word "cute" 7 times during my shopping experience by people who think they are too good to work retail but appear to be working retail. If I straighten my hair and wear stylish clothes and make-up, I am treated OK. So so. So that's the secret (if you're into fake nice). On my last trip there, they could not possibly have been more rude. From now on, I'm only going in to this store for internet returns. I'm going to dress like a bag lady and cackle. If they ask the reason for my return, I'm going to say "I'm pregnant with a kitty-cat." I forgot to add that their cashmere sweaters pill too easily for the money. Yes, I have a cashmere comb and carefully wash my sweaters by hand. Even LL Bean lasts longer. read more

I had a read a couple articles about J Crew recently. They never really crossed my personal radar, maybe I've fallen a touch out of line with fashion, but it used to be important to me. The articles, however, kindled my interest and I thought I could use a little fashion reinjection. I've gone too "Portland" for my own good a little lately. So I trotted on down with the intent to spend some money today. I read the yelp reviews and put the negative ones down to overly sensitive people. Well, no. The waves of "I'm too good to help you" just flowed off of every worker there. They couldn't be bothered to greet me, even though I was the only customer in the store. They couldn't be bothered to help. When I asked to look at something in my size, they acted as if I was somehow being a huge pain in the ass. What gives? Is this how people sell today? If the Ludlow suit I was looking at online had fit, I would have bought one or two today and few extra odds and ends. Well, there goes that $1500 bucks you might have had of mine. read more

It's hit and miss here. A few weeks ago, my fiance and I were here to buy a suit and the guy that helped us was helpful and attentive to our needs. Last week I came back and was totally ignored. I think I was ignored because I wasn't uber fashionable looking. So after an uglier than usual Monday, of all things I decided to try on clothes for almost an hour. I normally find this process to be excruciating at worst, mundane at best. Well it turned out to be an entirely lovely experience. The stylist set up the dressing room, remembering shoes and shirts that I hadn't come to purchase so that I could get a good idea of the suit altogether. She picked out some really cute pieces and went through all of my thoughts and concerns with me. In the end, we actually decided I needed to order it all online (for the tall sizes). She gave me a coupon to use for 20% off! She made my month--maybe my career! PS: This experience was so wonderful that it inspired me to write my first review after years of only thinking about it. read more

Sometimes when your stressed you just need to shop. I visit this J Crew often because it's close but also because it has a good atmosphere. I love the clothes and the decorations. I think the staff is pretty friendly too. I bought a schoolboy blazer from here and wear all the time. I think my favorite thing about this store is that usually they have a sale on sale.
