I text Efren, the person that came out, nothing. I leave a message at their main line, nothing. I reached out to JL Ray company to perform a metal roof inspection due to water intrusion. Brandon indicated that the price to perform a comprehensive report noting deficiencies vs. metal roofing standards, recommendations to address root cause and remediate, as well as link all deficiencies with photos and an eagle eye view of the entire roof for clarity was $925. I agreed to the pricing as it was reasonable and confirmed that this was the scope of the report when Eddie and Juan (foreman and metal roof specialist) came out to perform the work on Monday. The deadline we agreed to was Friday to have the report. I checked in to ask where they were and they had not started the report but promised Monday. Over the weekend, I asked Eddie what the hold-up was and he explained that there was a snafu with eagle eye. On Monday Brandon went MIA and on Tuesday morning, Brandon indicated that they were busy and were only going to write the report starting at 1pm PT and would have a draft (see below) in one hour. Sure enough at 2pm PT, he indicated that if I paid the $925, he would share the report with me. Feeling a bit uncomfortable, I asked that we do a screen review of the report so we could go through it together. He refused stating he did not have time and was only willing to share the screen shot below. I was ultimately able to get 5 minutes of his time at which his attitude was horrendous! I would not expect someone like Brandon to be customer facing for any company as I was shocked. Knowing that I was up against a timeline, I asked that we talk about pricing since the report was super vague and it was clear that it was quickly slapped together without much thought. He then went radiosilent and only wanted to text and refused to have a live conversation with me. Ultimately, he texted that price was non-negotiable. If anybody believes that a report like this is worth $925, bless you, but I'm truly shocked by the business practices of JL Ray. Leaking, wood rot, lawsuit...JLRAY improperly installed my metal roof, ruining vaulted ceilings, and upcharged me for new fascia even after inspecting the site twice before starting work. At the first leak I brought it to their attention and they had the gall to blame me; "it's your shower steam, blah blah blah." After 6 months of ghosting me I had to literally show up at their office and disrupt their business to get someone out. They came out, saw some errors and patched it up, but ventilated it wrong so condensation has been staining my vaulted ceiling for years. These guys are a joke - the owner Jeff Lee Ray told me to sue him rather than fix the problem; "that's what I have insurance for." Then he threatened to sue me for slander if I posted anything negative (that would technically be libel Jeff if these were false statements, however these pics show the truth). Call them if you want a leaky roof or bait and switch. Now in the process of hiring someone to uninstall and reinstall. What a joke. Character is defined how you address your errors, and these guys are dirtbags. read more

We are so happy with jl ray! Brandon was in charge of our project and he was incredible! Whenever we had a question he responded quickly, or came over. He helped us with samples and referrals for prior jobs. Originally we were going to use a company with the lowest estimate but quickly learned you get what you pay for. We installed a brand new clay tile roof so this was a huge purchase for us . We were very happy with our choice to spend a little bit more as the service they provide is truly amazing. Permits and inspections were so fast (we went through months of issues with the first company to get a permit and never got it) . Jl ray got the permits in what seemed like 24 hours. I had them come to do a estimates on my house. I wanted to repair termite woods and replace some broken tiles on my roof. I also had a small leak in my room caused by the broken tiles. . The guy suggested to remove the whole roof tiles off, replace it with a new lining underneath and use the old tiles to put back on. He also recommended repairing all the termite woods too. I was ok with doing all of that. The only problem was he wasn't able to give me a quote $. They charge hourly for the work they do. My question to him was," Well how many hours am I looking at? He said it depends on how much work I have up there and how many termite woods they would have to reinforce. I had a termite inspection layout showing how many woods and were it need to be replace and you serious still can't quote from that??? [ Im afraid they might purposely work slow and it will cost me money while they are up there picking their nose.] I told him that I'm not going to pay them hourly. I just need a quote. He told me that he will call me back later and let me know how much everything will cost. Next thing I know I got a texted from him telling me that they are going to turn down this job... " Good for me :-) " I don't know anyone on their right mind to hire a roof guy and pay them hourly and not knowing what it will cost them at the end. Well I ended up finding another roof guy that was able to give me a quote. When I told him about what this company said, We both started to laughed. I only pay hourly for little jobs done in my house. When it comes to a big project like this I need a #. I can't just pay you whatever you want. Honest, professional and very reasonable and no tricks when it comes to pricing a job. They use this service where the Satelite image of your roof gives you 100% accurate measurement of the roof and they use that to order material and calculate labor cost. I got a bid from a 5 star contractor for $30k, JL Ray bid was low $20K. When I asked them, they told me we price the job based on the measurement and not the zip code or neighborhood and charge the going rate. They did not bad mouth the other contractor, they simply said we charge for the work we do, nothing more and nothing less and our per sqft rate is like any other contractor. I then hire them for complete refacing our front exterior of our house after I found out that they are general contractor as well. See the pics by clicking on the camera icon next to Stars and you be the judge. They are well connected in OC and my job was completed according to the schedule. All permits and meeting with city inspectors and all that was also handled by them. Less headache for me to deal with. Since last year, I have recommended them to friends and family and everybody seems to be happy. The other great thing about them is that you don't see them bringing random folks off the street. We had several roof tiles that were sliding down plus around 15 tiles that were broken and needed to be replaced. I got 2 estimates from "A" rated Roofing companies. One company wanted $855 just to set foot on our roof PLUS another $700 to replace 10 tiles only - so a total of over $1,500 to replace broken tiles not counting fixing slipping tiles or anything else. With J L Ray CO, it was $139 for the roof tune-up plus $300 to replace 15 tiles and to clean & blow all the gutters around the entire house. The roof tune up included fixing 11 tiles that had slipped, re-sealing roof vents, spray-painting all flashings, eye-brow air vents and breather tube-vents that stick out the roof. Dan is very professional, easy to work with and answered all of my questions in a timely manner with a great positive attitude. I cannot say enough good things about Dan, the crew who performed the roof tune-up, and of the company J L Ray CO. The other "A" rated company wanted over $1,500 for less work. For $439 ( $1,100 less ), J L Ray CO Roofing did a lot more work and left the roof looking line new. I have attached a picture. Great company, great service and best of all GREAT PRICES! I saw a big Gray lifted Ram Truck with a wrap on it that Said J.L. Ray Roofing Company on it today on The 73 toll road. I was in the slow lane furthest to the exit going 70 MPH. This jackass was only a couple feet behind me tailgating for at least a mile! I was so scared and afraid because there were two men scowling at me In my rear view mirror. Finally they began to exit the off ramp to only speed up and cross the solid lines on the freeway that are illegal to cross, cutting me off and causing me to break and almost loose control causing a possible horrible accident!!! Next thing I see they pull the same WRECKLESS maneuver in front of me this time to a huge 18 wheeler that honked his VERY LOUD horn at these idiots also! I will go on to report this to the CHP because drivers like this need to be punished and STOPPED before they endanger any more lives. I would highly reconsider using these guys for your next job because if they can't even drive responsibly, what makes you think they will perform quality and safe work inside your home or business. read more

Had to re-roof to accommodate solar panels. This company came via solar city. The lead guy, Joey, was great and friendly. Professional. He followed through on everything he said. After the job was done, there were 2 things that needed attention: a hole in the roof adjacent stucco that may have occurred during the demo, and the gutters were not put back up. Joey had the stucco repaired and because we weren't told at the time that the gutters were unsalvageable after they were removed, they replaced them at no cost to us. The work was done timely and appropriately according to schedule. The crew were peasant, professional and friendly. Our roof was over 30yo, the fascia constantly kept having problems, and we had been told (four years ago) that the papers under the tiles were disintegrating! Time for a new roof... We got two quotes from different companies. One of them, of course, being from Dan Mallet from JL Ray. We were really impressed with how through Dan responded to all of our questions. He had a drone and took some amazing photos from above that really helped us figure out some of our issues. After he came over, he emailed the quote over promptly and they were very competitive. We were very happy with signed with them. We were constantly kept updated with where we were on the schedule, the team was respectful and cleaned up after themselves, and they coordinated with our solar company. Really painless and easy for us! When the roof inspector came over, he said he was really impressed with how it was all constructed! Jeff not only came out with a timely bid but he also hooked me up with Grounded Electric that he has worked with in the past for my solar project. The two companies coordinated a quick install that was needed to maximize my financial benefits of the solar system. NO STARS TO This Company..The J L Ray company San Clemente, did my Tar and Gravel roof in August 2005, I paid them $8000. to do the job. I found out when the crew arrived to start the work that, J L Ray Co. had sub contracted a roofing Company in Long Beach to do the the replacement roof work. During the 5 yr warranty I have had 3 leaks, that caused water damage to the ceiling in bed room,. I called the company about this problem, they said they would call me back to make an appointment, to send someone out to look at the roof. NO responce after a number of calls, I filed a claim with the Contractors State License Board. J L Ray co. has now contacted me and wants to come out to see the problem, ( which I have already had repaired) ...They are poor business people, to say the least. read more

Did do the work in a timely manner. Two on-going problems. 1) Leak in roof that took 3 years to resolve. 2) Did not remove/repair all rotted fascia board. Client was older and did not see the rotted fascia board that roofer missed until MUCH later. I, younger daughter, asked to have a bid to replace fascia boards that were not done on original job and was expecting to pay to have these replaced. I was promised a bid 4 times to do the work --- 4 times a bid has not been produced. Has put me in a bind as I will have to use another company to do the work --- and if there is an issue with the flat roof leaking afterwards, JL Ray will not feel obligated to stand behind leak warranty as they did not do the work ---- but they won't bid the work either! This company reroofed our home in 2010. Did a great job at a fair price. Later had a skylight installed as a fill-in job - good job at reasonable price. Recently had storm damage needed some tiles replaced, told them not a rush, work me in when you can, trying to be accommodating. He called me 10 days later, and said I have a short day can I work you in. when I said sure, go to my house I was stupid enough not to ask for pricing, because they have been so reasonable in the past. when I got home, I watched my security cameras, and found they had been there one hour and 15 minutes. They replaced eight tiles. The next morning I received an invoice for $795. I was shocked at the cost. The next day, someone called me to ask when I was paying the invoice. I told them I was surprised at the cost and would have to wait until Friday on payday. Feel ripped off and will never use them again. UPDATE: They called to make it right and issued a partial credit.
