I've been here enough times now, so it's time for a review! I have recommended and seen them highly recommended in local online conversations many many times. They are great people and their prices are more than fair. The guys who work here are very nice, and my human trustworthiness radar says they are good people. They are Japanese, and I'm a little bit shy to speak to them in Japanese, but I know they are from Japan and they would be great for Japanese people who need their cars serviced in this area. It's easy to schedule appointments over the phone. Some times my phone displays "Kondo Motors" when I'm speaking with them, just fyi. They're probably in business together to an extent. Their website says they can work on European cars, but I asked about BMWs earlier this year and they said they don't do BMWs. A bummer, only because I trust them and my husband had just gotten a used BMW at the time. I believe they probably have plenty of business just working on Japanese cars. They can get work done pretty quickly, but I like that there are several places I can walk to nearby to wait for my car to be done. There is Marine Park, Ozone Park, Whole Foods (with a spacious food court), and Starbucks, just to name a few. One time it was pouring outside when I came, and they let me wait inside while they worked on the car. It was neat to get to see my car lifted and see what kind of maintenance checks were performed. I was at complete loss when Yuki Import Service closed. When I heard that their customers were being referred to J Motors, I read their glowing Yelp reviews and decided it was worth the hassle of driving out to Santa Monica to get an oil change and have them look at my car. J Motors was definitely worth going the extra distance. They were so nice, polite and honest and didn't try to up sell me (unlike my experience at Valvoline where they handed me a long list of items that needed to be fixed). The only thing they recommended was a tire rotation that was so cheap that I felt guilty. Call ahead to book an appointment. You can walk down the street and get ice cream at Wanderlust Creamery or visit the gigantic Whole Foods Market while you wait. Don't even think about bringing your car anywhere else! read more

Five stars for honest and trustworthy work! If you own a Japanese OEM and need to get your car fixed, you know a place is legit if they have a bunch of Toyota and Honda vehicles parked in the front hah. Confirmed that they take Lexus vehicles too! (They likely take other OEMs but I didn't ask) In all seriousness though, I own a Toyota and my car began vibrating while idle which I also experienced and fixed last year so I just thought, oh no not again. Knowing it's COVID-time, I didn't know how quickly a place could fix my car but I knew I had to drive my car fairly soon so I wanted to fix my car ASAP. Called around and a lot of other places either needed 1-2 weeks to diagnose/fix the issue or they charged $130+ just to diagnose the issue with the error reader test. I called J Motors and asked if they could provide me with a quote and they said they can help me diagnose the problem for free, but couldn't give a quote without the diagnosis. Honest people. They said they had free time after a customer left at 2pm and would be able to help me diagnose the problem then. I arrived around 2:30pm, dropped off my car for approx 10 min and they diagnosed my car problem (it was the same issue I had last year, which affected a different part). They gave me my quote and it was less than the cost I paid another auto shop to fix the problem last year. J Motors told me I could have my car fixed in 30-45 min the day of. AMAZING. He even ordered the part to be delivered from the warehouse when he figured out the issue, (before I even approved) just so I could have the part ASAP. He said if I ended up not wanting to fix my car there, that would be okay too and he would just get a refund from the place he ordered it from. My bf and I strolled around the area to look at plants at a nursery nearby, walked to Whole Foods, ate ice cream at Wanderlust and came back after receiving a call that the car was fixed. Came back to a smooooth running car, paid, (he even provided me with a a finger glove to keep my finger from touching the payment terminal iPad thing when I signed for the transaction and a Lysol wipe to wipe anything). Amazing. Also noticed he helped me turn off my tire air pressure notification which my previous mechanic couldn't even do because he said it was "something about the sensor". J Motors went above and beyond and has made a long-time customer out of me! I will be taking my Lexus to him from now on too. Thank you! read more

I'm surprised I haven't already written a review for J Motors. We have been with them for many, many years and I have referred them to all of my friends as well. Many years ago I had been with another trusted mechanic (brothers) when their business had sadly closed, and their company referred their customers to J Motors. It's such a huge relief in life to have a trusted mechanic. In Los Angeles, your car is your livelihood. Even when I'm having issues with my car, which can be very stressful, I have the comfort in knowing that I have a wonderful mechanic who is knowledgeable and will do everything to figure out what's going on with the car. I cannot say enough nice things about the gentlemen who work here. They really are the best. This week I came in with a car problem that they don't fix at their shop. Even though it wasn't a job that they would do, they not only directed me to somewhere that could but also did the legwork to call the other place and the Toyota dealer to see where I could get the best pricing. Ito and Kimi are kind and honest specialists. This is hard to come by these days. I came from a Toyota repair center with a $200+ quote on my maintenance repairs, some of which for parts that I knew were newly replaced and shouldn't have any issues. Ito was able to fit me into their schedule because he scheduled time for another customer before realising their car was working just fine (which I learned was a common occurrence for them, and a good sign of honesty for me.) My trip here wasn't as drastic and miraculous as some of the other reviews here but I know a good business when I see one. If you shop around, many mechanics quote cheaper but that usually is a bate and when you bring your car in, they'll tell you that "Oh, your car needs this, that, and those. If you don't fix them, your car will blow up on the freeway. For the ordinary people, there is no way to know if that's true or not and ends up paying for a lot of unnecessary jobs. J-motors don't do that. They only tell you what's necessary to keep your car in good condition. They are the best! read more

I was sad to learn last Monday that Victor from Yuki Import Service had passed away suddenly last month. The owner of Yuki decided to close the shop, and started referring all his customers to J Motors in Santa Monica. That's probably worth four stars alone. I needed work on my car, and made an appointment with J Motors for Wednesday. By early afternoon, I'd received a call saying that the likely problem was the water pump, but that my car could likely be fixed under warranty from Toyota. I found out that I was indeed covered by the extended warranty I purchased five years ago, and called J Motors back to confirm that I would go the dealership route. They told me there would be no charge because they didn't have to do any work. Four point five stars. It so happened that my wife had a little tire incident a block away from J Motors, and while they couldn't fix the tire, they did mount the spare and ensure that all tires were properly inflated. They placed the irreparable tire in the back on top of several sheets of paper to protect the carpet from dirt, and move all the crap from the back to the clean areas of the car. Once again, no charge. Five stars. Here's the takeaway. J Motors doesn't get five stars because they didn't charge me; they get five stars because they were willing to help us out despite the fact that we'd had no prior history with us. We got the same kind of treatment that took us to Yuki for seventeen years, and that's worth a lot. I'm still sad about Victor's passing, but I'm glad to find that there are other independent mechanics here on the Westside that we can entrust with our cars. read more

I will no longer go anywhere else for car services. I used to go to Yuki's before Victor's passing. :( Santa Monica is a bit of a trek for me, so I went to my local Firestone for oil changes and figured I would go to J Motors for bigger services. Over the summer, someone stole the battery from my car and damaged the locking mechanism of the hood, so I couldn't close it properly. I replaced the battery and called J Motors to see if they could help. Ito said they could try, but I might need to take it to a body shop. Well, I carefully drove to SM, and Ito and Kimi looked at my car. No joke, they probably spent 30 minutes trying to repair it. They were ingenious and used some tape to temporarily fix the cable. They said eventually the cable would have to be replaced but since the labor for that was going to be expensive, I could wait. They didn't charge me a penny!! I love these guys. I was already feeling bad and angry about the stolen battery, and they reminded me that good people do exist. Flash forward to this month, I needed an oil change and 90,000 service. I made an appt, and Ito and Kimi had my car ready in about 2 hours. Ito showed me all the parts that he replaced (air filter, cabin filter). There was absolutely no upselling (unlike Firestone!) and the price was more than reasonable. I'm actually looking forward to my next oil change now. Tip: There's not really a waiting area, but you can easily walk to Whole Foods or Starbucks to wait. read more

Got my oil changed. Hyundai dealership told me my brakes were going to go out and told me I needed a full inspection of my car which ran about $300 or $400 which was unnecessary . this honest mechanic told me I had another 20,000 miles I will be coming back I highly recommend them! read more

I took my Odyssey to Honda Santa Monica to fix some recall items, and walked out with a list of "need-to-do's" totaling over $800. I immediately stopped by J Motors afterwards, and they 1) stated that the what Honda SM wanted to "fix" wasn't really broken, and it was something I could change out later down the line, and 2) all the other "fixes" they can handle at my next major service appointment for a fraction of what the dealer wanted to charge. After researching and reading reviews, I was referred to J Motors by a relative. They were booked solid but a cancelation allowed me to be squeezed in last minute for an oil change and basic checkup for my old Tacoma. Hiroshi and Kimi were both nice and easy to talk to. Kimi is the mechanic and found my left lower blinker burnt and changed it too with no additional labor. He was very efficient and finished much quicker than I had expected. I had gone to the dealer for the last oil change and they found items eventually needing service with price quotes. But their office kept on calling me to come in for the service even though not needed yet. I didn't mention these items when first contacting J Motors. But Kimi did find them. Hiroshi presented a schematic and showed me what was needed with more reasonable quotes. l will be going back to J Motors for the upcoming services. read more

Ito is the BOMB!!! When I moved to the west side, I needed and new mechanic for my very old Mitsubishi Lancer with which I can't bear to part. Ito was recommended to me by a neighbor. He has taken care of my girl three times now and I've always found him to be honest, reliable, fair and efficient. When he says he'll be done working on my car at a certain time, he's usually done earlier. He charges what he quotes and tries to save his clients money. I bring my 2012 Prius here for routine maintenance. Oil changes, light bulb changes, and such. They were recommended to me by a family friend. They are so helpful from basic info on my car to scheduling. I called them once for a same day appointment. It was my fault to be so last minute. Annoying, I know! :( But they were really patient with me and worked really hard to accommodate me the best they could when they REALLY did not have to. (I told them not to but they did anyway!) I also called them when I had a minor car accident that required body work. They don't do that but referred me to someone (who was great as well). But the first thing they asked me was if I was ok! These guys don't overcharge or upsell and really care about their customers. So glad I have a trusted place to take my car! read more

I just took my car here and received the best service. The men working here are incredibly knowledgable and honest. My favorite part of the experience was they walked me around the car and talked me through what they saw and their recommendations. Throughout the discussion I did not feel like they were trying sell me any services that my car did not need. The two men that work here are the most honest and dependable people. I've taken my Honda here for maintenance and repairs. They always do great work for a reasonable price and within a quick turnaround time. When my car's a/c broke, I contacted my dealership hoping it's be under warranty but they said it would be $200 to inspect the car and then likely $2500-$3000 to fix the problem. I took it to J Motors first and they inspected my car for free, but on top of that Hiro found that there was a recall for my cars make and model due to a/c issues. He printed out the information that I needed to show the dealership to help me get it repaired for free.
