I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the chalk board! It's cute, it's says authentic and ever changing, and neat. Yes, it was neatly written and creatively done. It wasn't a mess of things on a board as you would find at most independent low-key chalkboard type places. The store is definitely small and could definitely use an expansion into the next property, but I guess they gotta make due with their lease. I tried the "El Diablo" and the "Coconut Almond Chip" and knew I had to have both. I got a small and thoroughly enjoyed it in the depth of winter weather. My only wish is that, "I wish I could have one of everything and try them all," but alas this is one wish that will have to be fulfilled slowly but surely through time. I'm more of a soft serve kind of guy, but this is probably the best hard ice cream I've ever had, and that's the truth! The flavors are unbelievable - I'm not sure how they do it. This place is making me reconsider lowering my rating for Moomers famous ice cream shop in Traverse City, which won the award for Best Scoop in US multiple years in a row, in order to put a little space between the two. The Peanut Butter Oreo is astonishing. You cannot even tell there is peanut butter in it, but it's completely embedded in the flavor of the ice cream. Oreos are perfect. This location is even better than the Brookline one! So awesome! Previously, I had reviewed the JP Licks in Coolidge Corner and said all that it needed was outdoor seating. THIS ONE HAS IT! I love that it is right in Davis Square, so there is plenty of space to sit outside on benches and curbs. With excellent ice cream in an impressive array of flavors that are updated monthly, JP Licks also features a wide variety of toppings. Traditional serving choices (cups and cones) don't offer much to get excited about, though you can indulge your every whim in this regard. In addition to ice cream, frozen yogurt is offered in a number of flavors that go beyond vanilla, chocolate, and twist; lately, I've been hooked on the Mint Oreo yogurt, which I can't recommend highly enough. Rounding out the ice cream-related offerings are ice cream cakes, which look quite appetizing, but that I've yet to try. Beyond ice cream and frozen yogurt, JP Licks also serves coffee, which they roast themselves, and the many derivatives you'd expect from a company that takes pride in its beans. Again, I've never tried any of the coffee options, but it sure does smell good on any occasion when I am in the store when such a beverage is prepared. One of the highlights of JP LIcks over its competitors is its loyalty program. As much as I dislike adding yet another card to my wallet, it was certainly worth it. Not only did I earn a free sundae during the month my birthday falls in (which, sadly enough, I neglected to use), but I earn money towards future visits with each purchase. So many reviews on yelp start with something like "I'm a ____ snob", but you don't really know if they have good taste or just THINK they have good taste (and often the review suggests the latter...) Well I'm an ice cream snob and I know what the hell I'm talking about. My mother owned a homemade ice cream store for six years and in addition to eating hers and all other homemade ice cream we can get our hands on, I just returned from Argentina which has world-class gelato. And in my not-so-humble opinion, JP Licks is weak. It's not BAD, it's just nothing special. To me the sign of a good ice cream store is a good dark chocolate; they don't even offer it. My next yardstick is a coffee; theirs was not very strongly flavored at all. Consistency of the ice cream, mouthfeel was fine. If you're craving ice cream, it will do and it will satisfy you. But it's the same price as much much better quality ice cream. You're better off either: A) heading up to Teele Sq Cafe which now serves Cristina's ice cream B) holding out for Toscanini's C) going home and digging into that $3.99 quart of chocolate from Trader Joe's in your freezer. read more

I give JP Licks 3 stars. They have a good selection of flavors that change often, an excellent location (a good final stop after a day in Boston), and great service (prompt and friendly). However, their prices drag my rating down to three stars. I don't think the taste and quality justifies what they charge. Paying $3 + for a small is too much; I cringe every time I'm at the register. Overall, JP Licks is an average dessert place that gets a boost for location and a penalty for prices, bringing it back to average. read more

I have an unfortunate addiction to JP Licks. I've found that it doesn't matter which location I go to, the quality is the same. I get the same combination virtually every time I go here (once or twice a week, admittedly) --- half peanut butter oreo, half cookie dough. About a year and half ago the store gave peanut butter oreo full-time status, and deservedly so! The peanut butter flavor is strong and complements the oreo fantastically. The best part of the cookie dough ice cream is the vanilla base, rich and creamy. Honestly, yes, it is expensive ice cream. The quality and serving size more than make up for the price tag. Plus, if you get addicted like I am, you can get a cow card and cash in on your gluttony -- $50 of spending gets you a free small cup or cone. read more

Their peanut butter chip flavor is an amazing experience -- it's like someone transmogrified a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup into a cold, creamy treat on a cone. You have to taste it to believe it. In general, a fun and yummy ice cream shop, less "hip" feeling than Toscanini's, but with a larger and more recognizable flavor selection at any given store. Hmmm. Well I tried this ice cream in both the Davis Square and Brookline locations. In Davis Square, it was clearly overfrozen, so it had an icy consistency that almost ruined it. There wasn't this problem in Brookline. I much prefer Toscanini's. I'm not sure why, but it probably comes down to better ingredients. My hunch is that if you looked at the vanilla that these two stores use, for example, Toscanini's uses superior quality. read more

I just got an ice cream in a waffle cone at the Davis Square location, and was impressed, as usual with the sweet cream flavor. I also got a scoop of the banana hard yogurt and was disappointed that it was way too soft. I had also asked the server behind the counter if there were any other flavors than the ones on the board. The staff that worked on Saturday, 11/5/16, around 3:45pm, was the absolute BEST! We sampled the flavors until we found the flavor that did it for us! Not one time did they complain. Visited JP Licks on a recent trip to Boston and was pleasantly surprised. Enjoyed a delicious berry sorbet with more fresh berries on top! It was reasonably priced for the quality. I see lots of complaints about lines, but we must have come at the right time (4pm on Monday) as there was only one family ahead of us! Bad ice cream, bad service. I went to JP licks after a movie and was excited to sample and eat some ice cream. I've been to JP licks before and have found some good flavors there, and the service is usually pretty good. However, right when I walked in the door, the person behind the counter asked what ice cream I wanted. I hadn't even gotten a chance to look over the menu, and therefore felt really rushed! I asked to sample a couple flavors, and the person seemed frustrated, which made me feel more rushed. I went out on a limb and got the smore flavored ice cream. BIG MISTAKE! It was the WORST ice cream flavor I've ever had, so disgusting that I actually just threw it away after a couple bites. If I hadn't felt so rushed I would've tried it before buying it, but due to the bad service I couldn't do the proper research before deciding what to purchase. JP licks has lots of interesting looking flavors, but some of them really suck, so my advice is, try before you buy, because you never know what an exotic looking flavor of ice cream will taste like. And unlike Ben and Jerry's, where everything is delicious, some of the JP Licks flavors are downright terrible. read more

The ice cream here is amazing. And what a selection! I was at JP Lick's this Saturday and even though it was still chilly outside, the line was nearly out the door. I was in the market for frozen yogurt and they had a number of tasty, creamy options. They also have several lactose-free ice creams, which is somewhat unusual, but really nice for people who are lactose intolerant.
