We chose this restaurant since it was next to our hotel. It was recommended by a relative we were visiting. The interior is on the dark side, invoking old steakhouse vibes, but not really a modern/updated feel to it. We started with a couple of cocktails which took a while to get. There was only one bartender and she was backed up in orders at 6pm on a weeknight. For dinner we ordered country fried steak, salmon, and pasta Alfredo (a vegetarian in out party), all delicious! The salads we had before the main course came with a croissant drizzled with honey, yum! The service wasn't the best, I think our waitress was new. She didn't get my water request right, I asked for no ice, three times, and still got it wrong. She was sweet and did check on us, though we couldn't understand her since she spoke so softly. We paid cash, which included the tip. She came back after taking our money, to ask us if we wanted the change when we gave her $130 for a $97 bill ($100 bill plus a 10 & 20). We couldn't understand how paying that much more in cash confused her, hence assuming she was new. But overall I think our experience was pleasant. I wish they had more vegetarian options, but I would patronize this establishment again. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner at this restaurant. I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes. He had a rack of ribs. Both were delicious. Very tasty and you could tell they used fresh ingredients. I also had the pineapple upside down cake martini, which was absolutely delicious. This used to be my favorite restaurant in the south. I couldn't wait to go to this restaurant to get the very best tasting prime rib ever. THEY DISCONTINUED PRIME RIB in most of their locations. Within the past couple of years, J. Peters franchise opened several locations in the Myrtle Beach area where they do still serve prime rib. Why discontinue it here in Lavonia, Mauldin SC, Anderson SC etc... Now this is just another so-so restaurant whose menu is not worth going to. I'm very disappointed and hope they get close to closing down over this decision and go back to serving what the people want! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would My family and I came here to eat on 2/6/2026 after my mother's funeral service. We had the worst service the waitress was horrible she had the nastiest attitude and the manager was even worse. When we tried to address the issue after waiting over 2 hours for food and have the manager tell us that they were not going to fix the missing food and treat us like the dirt from the bottom of his shoes. It was unacceptable and disappointing. They made us feel like we didn't matter. You all need to address this and teach them that if they don't like their job they should not work in hospitality because they are not hospitable nor welcoming. Went for Mother's Day Eve dinner. Had a party of nine and service was good. Waitress took drink orders and provided all of us with water. Took our order and food was served in a reasonable amount of time. Salads, soups and salmon were very good and pasta was adequate. Good crowd in there with people coming and going - nice atmosphere. We stopped in J Peter's passing through Lavonia on a Saturday evening at dinner time. The restaurant was nice, clean, and service was excellent. The croissants are amazing and worth getting an order for sure. For my entree, I had the surf & turf which left something to be desired. We have frequented this location for years, since it opened. It has been fairly consistent until recently. Our last visit just before Labor Day was not good. The food was substandard and the service was the worst it has ever been. We usually sit in the outdoor patio. During this visit we wanted to relax and have a few drinks and the opposite occurred. Continuing my southern trip and trying out local places. I've actually been here before on previous trips and am finally taking the time to share my experience! Ambiance: Bar and grill restaurant alongside two hotels with plenty of parking, prime location for the hotel traffic but also great for passers-by. Some outdoor seating is available. It was busy, but not overly busy considering it's prime location, and my party of 4 sat right away. Price: Outstanding value for quality/quantity and location! Considering it's a "hotel" bar, or at least the first dinner choice for most hotel guests, the price is not exaggerated at all. I've seen restaurants by hotels bump pricing for average quality but here it is even better than expected. Maybe to keep it competitive with some of the chains nearby (Chik Fil A and Longhorn Steakhouse among others), but definitely catches my attention as a valued dinner choice. Pros: The food is delicious, and I've had a few meals here from the steaks, salads, and apps. The servers are kind and attentive. Cons: It closes so early, even during football season. I'd love to stay here and watch football and eat apps while watching sports, but closing at 9 baffles me. It seems early for a bar and grill but I'm sure there's a reason, just not something I agree with. Also I have one sub-par experience where my ahi tuna salad, medium rare, came out medium well and it took a while for it to come out. One bad meal out of many good meals, but otherwise no complaints. Overall: Anytime I'm in the area, and not past closing time, I'll be choosing J Peter's as my first dinner option! read more

The most disgusting food I have ever had in my life. The BBQ chicken nachos used to have Queso cheese on them and now they have a melted orange cheese that was so gross! The chips were STALE! So we have been here several times. My husband fines good stuff. But everything I try is either yuck or just meh. I got the chicken and broccoli Alfredo was so excited. Too much broccoli and the the Alfredo is powdered. It was so nasty. The chicken part was good. The next time I tried a steak, very then and alot of fat. Tonight I got soup and salad. Their salads have always been pretty good. But I had to go and try the Ceasars salad. Way too much dressing. Potato soup was grey! It tasted ok. But it was weird texture. But the croissants are always good nut why do you put it on my salad bowl so that the honey drips in my salad?! The service is always great. The staffing always friendly and helpful. Food is good and a good value; ambience is awful. It's such a pretty and modern looking restaurant from the outside. The minute you enter it's appallingly dreary, sterile, dark and depressing. The ceilings are black, dark grey walls and carpet, black and white photos, dark booths, track lighting. It's appallingly oppressive and ruins the meal. Without a lot of investment, painting the walls white and putting a small warmly lit lamp on each table would dramatically improve the atmosphere. I had a fried chicken salad with house dressing of hot bacon and mustard. All salads come with a croissant with honey on it. Was yummy. The portion was large, plenty of bacon in the salad, and it was delicious. My husband had Caesar salad, blackened salmon with loaded mashed potato and green beans. He was satisfied with his large meal and couldn't finish the potatoes, too many but good. I didn't care for the Caesar dressing; it was more like a tangy ranch. If the owners would improve the decor I would seek out J Peters as a dinner destination. The way it is now, I only eat there as a default, "Oh, I'm near Lavonia, I guess I'll eat at J Peter's". Don't know what happened às we have eaten here several times and food was always excellent...but last week my husband and I stopped here and had a horrible experience...he ordered the sirloin MR and I ordered the Prime rib MR...they both came out well done...my husband kept his but I asked the waitress to please take mine back and bring me a med rare cut like I ordered...she was very nice and soon returned with another serving...it had Sandrine juice on top and looked like I expected a MR Prime ribto look but when I cut into it was dry and tough and WELL DONE...i asked to speak to the manager and he came to the table and tried to angue that the meat was cooked correctly when it was served...i told him...no way...it hasnt been five minutes...he even commented that there was red juice on top when it left the kitchen when infuriated me because it let me know that he knew the meat was over done and someone had put juice on top and tried to pass it off às properly cooked...when I called him on this he then tried to tell me that they had a new policy and could only serve Prime rib well done...a totally asinine thing to say...i just told him to take his well done Prime rib back to the kitchen and bring me my money....if he had not been so condescending and stupid i would have asked for something else but às it was I was very put off and we just left. read more

I have been here twice. They service too much food. You will feel guilty for leaving so much food behind if your on travel. They served old lettuce with two Caesar salads. Gross. First the good - the sirloin and shrimp were ok, my steak cooked to order, others not. Then ... the service was very slow and not a lot of diners (it was a Tuesday night) - very slow. Some things didn't come out and had to be asked for. Even simple salads took a long time to get. The server was very apologetic - I think no fault of hers, but something must have been going on in the kitchen. But what an uninspiring atmosphere - zero intimacy that you might expect from a place that pretends to be upscale - the lighting looked like a place that was about to close and they turned all the lights on, dining room was in disarray, the restroom doors open directly into the dining area (who thought that was a good idea!) and right by where we were seated. Listen closely to my instructions... order a ribeye steak. Thats it! Boom... and you will be happy. The ribeye is not on the menu but trust me they have it and it is the bomb. I had cheese mashed potatoes with mine & I can't remember a meal so good. They use white queso on their mashed potatoes & its a game changer. Left the restaurant hungry because they couldn't get my order correct. And the service was not good good had to flag down another waitress(that was not our waitress) just to get the attention of my food not being correct. Not worth the cost of food. This place used to be very good but wow has it gone downhill. Went last night and ordered one of our favorites apps, the BBQ chicken nachos...it came out with stale chips, what tasted like Mexican queso dip drizzled over it with cubes of chicken breast and bbq sauce piled in the middle. Yuck. It used to have fresh shredded chicken and grated melted REAL cheese on it. Our main dishes were so so at best. We waited for 45 minutes to be seated and when we were finally seated half the tables were empty and the empty ones were covered in dirty dishes from the last diners. Two tables near us were never cleared during our entire meal. Not sure what's happened to this place but don't waste your time. I'll never go back. read more
