We often visit Pulliams to grab a hotdog. It's a yummy place to eat with fairly quick service. You go inside to order and be served, but then take it to go or eat in the parking lot. We personally love to pull around back beneath the shade tree to eat. This is a place where you get chips with your hotdog-not fries. Which is kind of a bummer for folks like me who love a crispy fry slathered in ketchup alongside my hotdog. You can also get a glass bottle drink. My husband always grabs an ice cold Cheerwine. They're not my top hotdog pick in the area, but I certainly never say no to a visit to Pulliams. Give this neat little place a try! read more

Their dog's typically are fantastic. I must have hit work shift change because there were about ten people waiting to order or waiting for their dogs at 3:15pm. So there was a wait and I was in no rush. My order for two dogs all the way with slaw and toasted bun. Along with Cheerwine and bag of chips. Dogs were great but one bun was burnt slightly. There is no ambiance like it's 108 years old. So can cut it some slack. Fortunately the employees are much younger! As for ambiance not much except so far best dogs in Triad IMO. I have a rule to never eat in my automobile. Not many option where people do eat in their car.Wooden stumps to side of place to sit but too hot for that. You would think after 108 years money would be allocated for small shelters with seats. And warning NO public restroom. To sum it up will rate it four stars Ambiance leave it as is. Love the hot dogs. Love the nostalgia. Loved supporting a local business. But, I simply do not enjoy the BBQ. They toast the hot dog buns and they develop a nice sweetness. After visiting another favorite, old school hot dog joint recently, Kermit's, I was thinking about another such place, Pulliam's! John S. Pulliam started this hot dog joint in 1910, it has been owned by just two families over the ensuing 114 years. I ordered an All The Way dog and a Cheerwine. This remains very good hot dog, among the best in the area, and at $3.10 it is online with the competition. I'll continue to visit from time to time, like always. read more

Great Dog. Take Away Only or In-Car Dining....we opted for In-Car Dining. Pretty good chili slaw hot dog. Would rate it a solid 4 nothing more, nothing less. Ate in the car. This is a very small place with a very small ordering area. We ordered, got our food and ate in the small parking lot. Steady stream of customers which is a good sign. Pulliams is an institution and I can see why. I've ordered the sandwich hotdog combo, which comes with chips and a drink. The hot dog is worth the drive. That was my favorite item. The bun was nicely toast and all of the toppings went well together. The bbq sandwich was pretty good. I liked the meat on its own without the slaw. The staff was very nice. The building is old, but fits the vibe of the place. I also tried one of the famous fried pies. It was excellent and would highly recommend them. read more

Staff wasn't friendly. Place was dirty. My husband tried the BBQ sandwich and only took a couple bites.. said the flavor and texture was off. The buns appear to be toasted and buttered...kind of greasy. They are not bad but I still haven't found a hot dog in Winston Salem to top Kermit's hot dogs, and I've eaten at just about every place in the city that serves hot dogs. read more

going to start out with an emphatic "I'm not from here and I might be doing this wrong..." because I'm not from here and I might be doing this wrong... For starters I'm good with odd red snappy sausages as long as they are but these mostly weren't. they certainly were red... but in a snapless mushy-meat-stick sort of way. granted, it was a miserable and overcast sort of day and that didn't help much, but still... and since "no fries, chips!" was amusing at Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern for the bigger part of a century before the turn of the century we'll let that go here too because, well, you know... history and tradition. pretty sure "napkins as sandwich wrap" is not a thing anywhere; hard to believe that a better option isn't available. I finally made my way to Pulliam's for their acclaimed hot dog. I have had many people tell me I should try their hot dogs, so I guess I should've listened sooner. The location itself is nothing special, and you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. It's just an old country store with a Cheerwine logo; it doesn't even have the name visible on the front of the building. There's no place to sit inside, but it was clear that locals hang out in there and talk. The menu is very modest too; they have hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, and bagged chips and sodas. I got two hot dogs all the way and enjoyed them in my car. The service was instant. Y'ALL... when I say this is the best hot dog I've ever had, I mean it! The bun was buttered, it was a pork hot dog, AND it was loaded with delicious slaw and chili. It met all of my expectations for the perfect hot dog. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Pulliam's is better than the old country store back towards my neck of the woods which I personally thought was the best hot dog! No doubt the best hot dog in Winston, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find much better anywhere else. We each ordered our dogs all-the-way (is there really any other in NC)? Both the meat sauce and slaw complimented the delicious, snappy dog with streaks of char across it's bright red exterior. Can't comment too much about it but 4 stars goes out to the one order of bbq meat (pork) that I had and for the super authentic vibes. My grandma came here with her family as a kid and she was super happy to see the place still going strong. Come here for comfort food and for hometown vibes! Stopped in for lunch at Pulliam's today. Plenty of character in this joint. I loved the conversations swirling through the small space between the workers and the customers. There was a line at 11:45 so I figured I was in for a treat. You place your order with one woman and then slide slightly to your right and pay the next. I ordered two hot dogs (one ketchup and mustard, one chili, slaw, and mustard) and a bbq sandwich for $7.90. First, the let down. The BBQ. It was ok, I guess but it's what drove this review from a four to a three. It just had a strange flavor. I think I know my BBQ but this one didn't have much of a recognizable BBQ taste. It was a hearty sandwich though with a good amount of meat and slaw for the price. Let's move on to the good stuff, shall we. The dogs. Really tasty hot dogs with a bun that is perfectly toasted so that it has a nice crunch when you bite into it. The ketchup and mustard was good but the ATW (minus onions) was amazing. All of the flavors came together really well. I think the creaminess of the slaw and the chili worked really well together. I will definitely be returning to Pulliams. My next review will be for all hot dogs and will, undoubtedly be four stars. read more

Pulliam's has been on my list of places to try for years and, even though I live in Winston, I have just never found myself over towards that part of town. You really have to venture off the beaten path to get to this little hot dog joint. Having built this place up in my mind for so long and seeing all of the accolades and high praise, I actually walked away with kind of mixed feelings. Even though Barbeque is in the name "J S Pulliam Barbeque", make no mistake, this place is a hot dog joint. With that being said, I obviously had to try the BBQ on for size as well. Pulliam's is honestly just a little shack large enough for a couple of people to wait in line, no indoor seating, and no frills. It definitely has a lot of character, which is no surprise since it has been operating since 1910. The inside is adorned with Nascar memorabilia and other North Carolina based items. As other reviewers have made clear, this is not a sit down place. You can grab your food to go, eat in the car, or pull up a seat at the redneck picnic tables outside (Makeshift tables and stools constructed with stumps). We ordered our food and headed out for the redneck picnic tables. The service was much less friendly than I was expecting. The employees were very friendly to the regulars, who they all seemed to know by name, but we definitely weren't given anywhere near the same treatment. I ordered 2 hot dogs All the Way, a BBQ sandwich, and a glass bottle Cheerwine to wash it all down. (Sidenote: Any place with glass bottle Cheerwine and Sun Drop definitely goes up a notch in my book). I tried the hotdogs first, which actually did live up to the hype. These are classic southern red weiners with a great snap. The onions were fresh, the slaw was flavorful, and the chili was great. What brings it all together is the toasted and heavily buttered bun. I was impressed. The BBQ, however, was not even in the same weight class as the hot dog. I had been warned, but I wanted to try it for myself. They advertise their BBQ as Red Pig BBQ. I'm not sure what that means, but it is not NC BBQ. It had no smokiness and was actually kind of a tough meat. It was a taste that I was familiar with, but it took someone else trying it to nail down the flavor. The meat tasted and looked like the meat that you would find in a Brunswick Stew. I honestly couldn't even eat half of this Brunswick Stew Sandwich. Pulliam's does hot dogs very well. Their service is lacking and their BBQ is disgusting. I will probably be back here for a hot dog, but in my opinion PB's in Winston-Salem has a superior hot dog, much better service, and a better atmosphere. read more

I am told by natives that the section of Winston-Salem where JS Pulliam is located was once an economically thriving part of the city. Already declining by the late 1970s, the death knell was sounded for this area having any future on the economic forefront when Smith Reynolds Airport ceased commercial flights in the 1980s. As a result, the area is now rife with abandoned buildings and rundown, ramshackle businesses. Nevertheless, JS Pulliam remains a popular, stalwart establishment offering old fashioned hot dogs here since 1910. But even JSP is not immune to the local appearance, as it, too, looks a little run down, especially around back. Also, I wasn't thrilled with the 92.5 sanitation grade. Despite the fact that I was the only one in there, the elderly order taker was pushy (but not impolite) and kept asking if I was ready to order. I settled on two hot dogs all the way and one with mustard and onions and a bottle of Sun Drop. This came out to ten bucks, which is too expensive. The three men working the cooking area set about grilling the buns, heating the dogs, and getting everything assembled. This includes wrapping the dogs in napkins, which is both strange and messy. I checked, and some form of wax paper has been known since at least the Middle Ages, and I cannot believe that it's cost is so prohibitive that JSP cannot invest in some. The napkins result in a soggy mess. I got my food and went out to my car to eat. It is, in a way, a neat setting, for you can watch charter and cargo flights from Smith Reynolds gaining altitude in the near distance and also watch a train rumble by through a copse of trees just across the street. The hot dogs are excellent. The grilled bun had a delightful crisp, the chili is very good, and the generous portion of slaw had a great taste and tang. The dogs could have used more mustard though. The dog itself is as red as they come and is honestly just average in flavor, but with the all the way accoutrements, the entire thing comes together scrumptiously. The hot dog with just onions and mustard wasn't nearly as good, so if you come to JSP go all the way. Some additional notes: No fries, just bagged chips. No fountain drinks, just bottled. No seating, save for three oak stumps and a makeshift bench. Worth a trip if you are a hot dog fan. read more

I'm going to admit it, I was a little disappointed! After reading all the reviews and generally hearing how awesome the hot dogs are here, I think I was just expecting too much. The people working the counter were extremely friendly and quick. Five stars on the service for sure. Those bright pink hot dogs are new to me. They certainly don't sell those things in New England. I knew they were of that variety so it didn't throw me off, I think I would just prefer for it not to be bright pink. The chili was okay but for me I just have not found a place to top the chili at PB's. I also found it a bit odd that they wrapped their hotdogs to go, in napkins. The bag and napkin got all soggy from the chili. I wonder why they don't use wax paper. Their location is a bit off of the beaten path! But it does have a nice little side area to enjoy your hot dog sitting on a tree stump outside. read more
