Made my way down to Midway from Winston-Salem to visit Thunder Road Grill for an early lunch on a Friday. I arrived shortly after 11 and was the first guest of the day I believe. I took one of the wooden booths that line the walls and say beneath the car, truck and racing paraphernalia that adorns the walls throughout. The service was fantastic given that I was the only one to care for. I ordered the BLT plate with tater tots and a hot dog. The BLT was served on a toasted bun. The bacon was thick and had just a slight chew to it. Just the right amount of mayo and tomatoes cut to a good thickness. Hot dog was pretty great. They put a real generous amount of mustard *under* the frank then topped with chili and a nice creamy slaw. If the bun had been toasted it would have been darn near perfect. Appreciated the self-serve seasoning salt at each table. Tots were good without but especially good with. Thunder Road Grill was worth the drive and I hope to return! read more

This really isn't like me, but I'm writing this on a Saturday morning and my bride and I have just agreed that we are heading back to Thunder Road Grill for the third Saturday in a row! You have to understand, that I am a total burger snob. As a reference point, my favorite burger in the Piedmont Triad is Hops Burger Bar in Greensboro, and I'll drive the 20 miles and stand around waiting on a table for 30 minutes, at the first suggestion, no questions asked. Also way up there is/was Big Burger Spot, but they've now slipped into third place since Guy is no longer the owner and overseer and now that I've had the burgers at Thunder Road. First off, they will cook your burger to your desired doneness. For me, that's the minimum standard that a burger joint has to meet, and my medium-rare burgers have been spot-on every time. From there, the buns, the topping, the sides have always been fresh, tasty and again, done to order to meet my picky requests! "Can I get those tots crispy?" "Since I haven't tried it, can you put that sauce on the side?" "Can you cook that bacon crispy but not burnt?" Each request was met with something like a "You bet!" and the execution of the request was perfect. I really like that each table is equipped with a roll of paper towels and several condiments including the local Texas Pete, as well as salt, pepper, and some form of seasoning salt. Often when I see these things on tables in diners they are grimy and the table beneath then is sticky and dirty, but they make an extra effort to keep them clean and well stocked. For example, last week I grabbed the red bottle of Heinz ketchup, expecting that I would need to request a swap with a full bottle, but no, it was totally full! Just like when I was a kid, I love crunchy potato chips on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like fries with my ketchup! Let's face the facts that one of these days I'm bound to be disappointed in something, but from what I can see from the friendly and attentive staff, it's going to something I can overlook or that they'll be willing to address. Oh, that reminds me about the bathrooms! I often dread entering the men's room in a one-off diner or pub, but I was elated to find a clean and fresh smelling space that was well lit and well supplied. They've won us over. Last Saturday we bought three of our granddaughters, and today will be joined by my sister and brother-in-law, who are also locals and bound to become fans of Thunder Road Grill! As I re-read this before posting it, I wonder, why do I leave good reviews for places that I don't want to see become crowded and popular? Sometimes I question my sanity! I must say, this restaurant turned out to be way larger than I anticipated. The raceway/race car aesthetic is pretty cool, I must admit. The interior is quite impressive, and even the hot chip wasn't half bad. But maybe I will come back and try something else. But this time the food was not it. read more

Small burger, hot dog, and ice cream spot in a kind of shabby strip center - sometimes it seems they all are shabby. There is a separate entrance for dine-in vs take-out, and this is clearly marked. I ordered a Cheeseburger and a hot dog. Took over 20 minutes with an empty restaurant, not especially cool. Food was good. , but not a destination spot for food of service. read more

This place should be closed. No authentic food. It's just 100% Sysco. The buns aren't fresh...

SLOW...we went in about 7:30PM this evening to grab dinner. We were waited on promptly, and the server was very nice. My hubby got wings and onion rings, and I ordered the BBQ sandwich. At least 30 minutes later we got our food. There was only one other couple in a booth, and a couple of men at the bar. My BBQ sandwich was cold. Not warm, but cold. The server took it back, and it was still cold when it came back. I asked if they had a microwave...they did not have one in the kitchen, but said they had one in their stock room. Another 5 minutes later, it came back hot. The food was pretty good, I just don't understand the slowness, especially on a seemingly not busy night. This was the second time I have been there, and I am still not impressed. Again, the server was very apologetic and took my sandwich off the bill, but there needs to be some changes in my opinion. read more

Yesterday we heard about this place from a relative. With it being so close we had to try it out! The burgers were bigger than the kids faces and they loved every second of it! The service was super nice even with the kids and their 100 questions and demands. The place was small but clean for lunch and the food was great! I recommend the hotdogs but they said the burgers were pretty good too. It's kinda tucked back in a shopping center so if you didn't know it was there you wouldn't see it. Definitely a must try! This was the first time eating here. Been to the shopping center many times but never tried eating here. Got the single burger. It was really good with the homemade chips. Great service and well. The restaurant was way bigger than I expected. Very clean bathroom as well. I'll definitely eat here again. I recommend you give it a try. read more

got an extra day off work because sometimes it happens that way and went looking for a bit of race fun. turns out the car track wasn't open but the snack shack down the way was so there I was looking for something to go with coffee :-) found a spot at the counter and sat down to the sad reality that breakfast wasn't a thing here but lunch looked promising. the menu was showing a variety of sandwich options but the hot dogs caught my eye... dog and fries... and a combo means I'm drinking for free!! wasn't too long before food showed up: two real beef dogs on toasted top split buns adorned with mustard, onions, and pickle (passed on ketchup, slaw, mayo and some others) and a fair pile o' long skinny fries. not sure where the meat sticks come from but they rate with late century Best's Kosher; just a little funny business in the spice pack don't you know... I'm not from around here so I have to ding y'all for no relish and I can't get a coke-float... but if them burgers live up to the hype and I can manage some chili cheese tots we can probably fix that ;-) read more

We are ADDICTED to their wings! Best wings in the area! They do them crispy if you ask, with a side of crispy tots and the GOOD ranch! Our family loves their burgers, fries, chips and chicken tenders as well! Love the Ambiance and the renovated spaces! The addition of the bar makes this a one of a kind spot in the North Davidson area! Delicious food and a nice family owned establishment that is family friendly, welcoming and always polite! Today is 10/15/20. My co worker and I stumbled across this restaurant when I went the wrong way while looking for somewhere to go for lunch. Staff were wearing mask. They have every other booth closed off for social distancing. Staff were friendly and service was good. The burgers were AMAZING!!! They were juicy, thick, and had perfect grilled taste!! Man, I could definitely have another one. It wasn't even far from my office. They close at 3pm right now due to business being slow and to cut back on cost. They sell ice-cream as well. read more

Took my grandson and wife in for hotdogs . The service was fair but the food not so good. He had a plain hd , wife had chili and cheese hd and I had a chili , onion hd. The dogs were barely cooked . The buns aren't steamed or grilled or fresh . Chili and cheese is extra . So three dogs basket of tater tots 2 milkshakes and an ice tea $35 plus tip. Not going to go back. read more

Great food! Our server Samantha was fantastic. We drove from Lewisville because our children keep seeing the commercials. It was worth the drive its small, clean, and the food is made to order. We had burgers and homemade chips they were fabulous! We will definitely go again and the ice cream was super fun after the meal! Special shout out to our server she made my 4 year olds night! She just do happens to be in the commercial and he got her autograph. Very nice family fun night! The 5 stars are for the food; the seating is just average, but clean and the wait staff was friendly. I live in the area and decided to stop by. I can only comment on the steak and cheese sub meal that I got, and it was really good, better than our previous go-to take out place near by, so we'll be getting them from here from now on. Also, I'm not a fan of tater tots, but my son purchased them....he got a huge amount and I'm not exaggerating when I say that they were the best tater tots I've ever had: totally light and crispy outside with a smooth potato filling. I know that's random, but usually tots are greasy or mushy or flavorless to me. Not these--totally get them! read more
