This place is a bit off the beaten path, has seen much better days inside and out, but the broad menu and the hot dogs draw folks. Lise and Feras Alfares opened this spot in 2008, after operating a Mr. Softee truck for number of years in the neighborhood. The menu is centered on hot dogs and burgers, but is really broad, offering a large variety of deli sandwiches, hoagies, gyro, veggie options, quesadillas, nachos, flounder and shrimp plates, plenty of turkey choices, and several dozen toppings and condiments! I love Hot Dog City. It's a great, charming, divey takeout restaurant with 5-star food and service. I love getting their veggie dogs with either a side salad or delicious fries. The veggie dogs are never mushy and always have great texture. The veggie chili is amazing, chocked with beans and fresh veggies and seasoned to perfection. They toast the bun, giving it the perfect texture to complement the dog. The slaw is also some of the best I've had, hands down. The salads are always super fresh, with large mounds of veggies on top. They're definitely a great value. But my most recent and favorite discovery is their fries. They're perfectly crispy, served piping hot, and topped with a delicious Middle Eastern seasoning blend that takes them to the next level. I can't even begin to describe them. Just order them. Yet another fantastic visit to hotdog city! My son, my daughter, and I were absolutely delighted with our meal choices. I opted for the Philly without lettuce or tomatoes, smothered in cheese sauce which I would rate a perfect 10 out of 10. My son decided on the chicken tenders and chili cheese fries; he mentioned that the tenders were different but still tasty. I enjoyed my trip to Hot Dog City. It's a little different. I pulled in to the drive in and saw people sitting in their cars eating. This made me think that there is a car hop, but there isn't. You go inside to order. There are no seats anywhere. You order your food and then they bring it out to your car. It took a good fifteen minutes for the food to come out to me, but once it did it was very good. The fries were hot. I got what used to be called a Manhattan dog, but the guy at the counter wasn't familiar with that. Maybe he's new. It's got mustard and these bbq onion which are great. NO free refills. The menus I see on Yelp look pretty extensive and I would like to try some of the other sandwiches, but I'm not crazy about eating in my car. I'll probably be back. read more

Swung by hotdog city on Memorial day after a drive from Kernersville with myself, my husband and the two darling children. Saw some quick reviews and thought we would give it a try. This is a walk in and takeout location. So you sit in your car and you wait for them to bring the food out. We should've called ahead, but we weren't aware of that being option. my husband had the Philly cheesesteak. Oh, I had the best Ruben of my life and the small people ate a hotdog and something else. Everyone was ecstatic about how amazing the fries were and you get a lot of fries. I loved my sandwich. Did I mention it was the best Ruben of my life. This may be the worst takeout we have ever had and we order out way too much. I don't write reviews but it's been 5 hours since we had lunch and I'm still mad. Our burgers tasted like school cafeteria boiled burgers with no seasoning and the cheese was congealed hard. All you could taste is mayonnaise and mustard. The chicken sandwich was ok. Hot dog city is one of the coolest hidden gem spots in Winston. The food was great and incredibly cheap. We tried the classic hot dogs all the way, and while messy, they were exactly what we were looking for. If you want a loaded up dog and some classic side choices, this is your place. Definitely a hidden gem here in Winston-Salem! You have to travel a short distance outside the center of downtown to find Hot Dog City on the corner of Patterson and Glenn. There is parking right by the building. The ordering space inside is kind of cramped but there was some nice picnic benches out front where we waited on our food. Everything is made to order, so keep that in mind with wait times. No inside seating, so if the weather isn't cooperating, you'll want to take it to go. We were craving hot dogs and boy do they have options. Something worth noting - growing up in this area, I always recognized "all the way" on a hot dog as slaw, chili, onions and mustard. Theirs includes ketchup as well, and I am not a fan, so I'm glad I asked! They also asked if we wanted to add cheese to the all the way dogs which, we love the option to add cheese to anything! The hot dog has that classic toasted bun we all know and love! I will say, it is a good hot dog but not the best one I've ever had. The chili wasn't my favorite and it just overall didn't top some of the other hot dogs in the area for me. My friend ordered the Manhattan dog which had caramelized onions and a sauce which looked great. I definitely love the creativity! The winner of our visit was the loaded fries! We decided on the Buffalo chicken fries and wow. Packed to the brim with crispy fries, tons of chicken, ranch and Buffalo sauce. These fries hit just right! They also offered chili cheese and philly steak fry variations. Upon talking with the super kind lady working behind the counter, she said they're in the process of revamping their menu and would be adding more loaded fry options - YAY! Besides the location, Hot Dog City has the best hot dogs, smoked sausage dogs and food on this side of town. They have a really good vegan menu, they do not sell any pork. What we like from hot dog city is of course their hot dogs, they do have some good chilli cheese fries,cheesesteaks, burgers, sandwiches; its pretty much your typical take out place. Y'all. If you are looking for quick, friendly service and well seasoned takeout, this is the place. I stopped in here after work and got two different hot dogs and the fish sandwich and all three were DELICIOUS! The topping selection is huge and the dogs themselves are a knockout. Not to mention the batter on the fish sandwich is perfectly crispy and flavorful. The food was so good! My wife visited with our kid to check out the Winston area and this place did not disappoint! The service was a bit slow but it was worth the wait! We are from Greensboro and were taking a family trip around Winston and came across this place. And let me say if this is the type of food Winston is know for, than I can't wait to explore more of the city! The environment was very friendly and complacent. There wasn't much disturbance around the area, considering we are from a loud city. The restaurants name should be more broad because of all the delicious items they have on the menu! How this little place has been hiding from me for two decades I don't know. I tried when I found out and WONDERFUL . Describes this place best. I had the hotdog all the way and it was awesome. You could taste the flavor of everything!! To me if you can't taste what you're eating there is no point in eating it. They have regular, footlong and 1/4 pound hotdogs plus a decent variety of other sandwiches. Service is good but takeout only. The ambience is friendly but again takeout only. I just have to say something about this place. I thought about it for awhile because from my short time there, I could tell they are a hardworking family. I respect the work ethic in that. But that doesn't excuse how unsanitary the place is. Sure, it's in an older building. But the amount of bugs I saw in the 15m I waited for my food. I kept swatting at this fly like bug on my leg, watched one of the kids wipe his snotty nose before taking someone's money and grabbing another's food, watched the other kid drop his glove on the ground, and put it back on before heading to help plate the food.
