The…read moreassistants and hygienists who worked with me were wonderful, and I have no complaints about that. My problem is entirely with the treatment plan I received from one of the dentists. Background: I don't have great teeth, I have bone loss in the back from years of untreated MS, which kept my gums inflamed for years. Since I started treatment for that, my gum health returned, tight gums, no pain, no infections. When I came into this office for the first time, I made it clear I wasn't chasing a perfect smile. I just wanted to be able to smile again without embarrassment. The dentist's recommendation was full-arch reconstruction, top and bottom. She told me my mouth was unsalvageable. Which, was concerning, because a year prior a different office told me it was if I got my wisdom teeth out. But, I listened to her and seriously considered it. They had a full presentation ready to sell me on a complete reconstruction. "You're going to have to replace these teeth in 10-15 years anyway, so why not now?" and "I wouldn't recommend dental work here, it's a waste of time and money. You'll just pay more later to replace them." What pushed me from being just concerned about what I was being told, to actually upset, came the next week while I was getting a cleaning done. The dentist came in during the cleaning to ask if I'd decided to replace my teeth yet. I thought that was strange. Very. I decided to go back to an ortho I had seen about a year prior who told me he could do the work. This time, he spoke to the dentist that had just recommended full reconstruction and he wasn't willing to go against the dentist recommendation. But, then he said, "If you really don't want to give up, go talk to a periodontist." So I did. The periodontist went into great detail. My teeth are not great (admittedly so,) but they're not anywhere near full reconstruction. I have great bone health in the front, the back needs work (from loss), and my gums are completely healthy. He showed me the bone loss on the imaging, walked me through everything. I walked into his office with no hope, because of what I was told before, and walked out with a lot more. What bothered me the most here, other than the sales pitch, was that the dentist who recommended this never actually tested my teeth's health. She went off the X-Rays alone, which to be fair, shows my mouth in worse shape than it really is. The periodontist went through and tested each individual tooth, and recommended dental work, approved ortho, and helped me organize a plan to actually fix them. I will say, it bothered me that St. Mary's Dental cancelled all of my upcoming appointments after I sought out a second opinion. I certainly didn't ask them to do that. Because, while I was annoyed, I understand why stuff like this happens. All that just to say, it doesn't matter how good a dentist is, they can make mistakes. If you get a diagnosis like this, definitely get a second opinion.

The staff is friendly and the doctor who was there (Dr. Kim), was awesome. I like the new Dr as well but Dr. Kim definitely made an impression on my boys and I. I live over an hour away from this place. Does that tell you anything? I think the staff is wonderful with the kids. They laid the groundwork with my son to not have a fear of the dentist and has kept his teeth in great shape despite his addiction to marshmallows (prizes for potty training). The dentists are grads from UPENN (currently the top dental school if not one of the top 3) and everyone we have worked (great hygienists and assistants) with have made this place awesome- Which is more than I can say about those Chain Pediatric dental offices that employ dentists who are not pediatric dentists at all..... Unlike at KOOL smiles or whatever it is called, they wont "YELL" at you child to calm them down by scaring them. They use this awesome reward system (token to get a prize for being good) at the end to pick a toy in one of the dispensers. ALSO, the cute ship for kids to play in at the corner of the waiting room - PERFECT. Kept my kids busy for my 5 min wait (which is forever in kid time) As for scheduling, I don't mind scheduling in advance for the appointments I need (Sorry, Angela C.), but when I've needed to reschedule, they were fine with it as long as it wasn't a last-minute thing (I changed it a week or two out). My son hasn't needed it yet, but they offer DVDs for kids to watch during their procedure...(healthy teeth thanks to this place) The office is a building shared with an orthodontist on the other side (uhm.. can we say perfect transition to the tween years?) the ONLY drawback is the distance... but it is worth it for us.

Big difference in trying to charge me $300 for something when I only had to pay $50 (this happened more than once). They don't like it when you call your insurance company either to find out what you're really supposed to pay. When my insurance company started questioning them about the charges, the dentist office dropped me and my family as patients and refunded me for all the money that was overpaid. Funny, I guess if I had not dug deep enough to find out actual cost, they would have pocketed the extra money that they charged me every single time. I have never in my life dealt with a situation or dental office like this. I wonder how many others blindly pay and never question the charges/amounts. Also want to add how rude the dentist was about all of this as well. We did not miss multiple appointments or any appointments for that matter. Did I ever have to reschedule something? Yes! With that being said, we were contacted by our insurance company and told to not come back. They said the office called them, not us. This was due to the staff being irritated by my insurance company. They were questioning prices and procedures.

Procedure performed on the wrong eye.I had my first LASIK procedure with Dr. Mark Whitten in 2005…read morefor vision correction. Naturally, about 15 years later, I needed another correction and returned to Dr. Whitten for a consultation. During that visit, he recommended monovision, given my age at the time (late 40s). He explained that this approach would allow me to balance both near- and far-sighted vision without needing reading glasses, which many people begin using in their 50s. However, after the procedure I immediately noticed difficulty seeing clearly. Over the following year, I continued to struggle with my vision--particularly problematic in my work as a professional photographer--and sought evaluations from multiple optometrists and ophthalmologists. I then discovered that the LASIK procedure had been performed on the wrong eye. When I returned to see Dr. Whitten, I learned that neither he nor his staff had ever determined my dominant eye prior to surgery. In fact, my old patient notes from 2020 confirm that no such test was performed. Despite this, no apology was offered for the mistake. During that visit, I was seen by John Rogers, a technician and former Senior Surgical Consultant at TLC Vision. His background includes attending Computer Tech of Pittsburgh, but he has no formal education or degree in optometry or ophthalmology. He suggested inappropriate options such as cataract surgery (for which I am not a candidate) and during the same visit Dr. Whitten suggested undergoing yet another LASIK procedure (a third) to correct the issue or resorting to contact lenses--the very reason I had LASIK in the first place. This experience left me with the strong impression that the practice prioritizes business and profit over genuine patient care and vision correction. I regret not doing more thorough research before returning for a second procedure, as I have since learned of multiple malpractice lawsuits filed against Dr. Whitten, including Jamie Domeier vs. Mark Whitten, David Cantalupo vs. Mark Whitten, and Liesl Nichols vs. Mark Whitten. I also couldn't help but notice the promotional posters displayed across his offices, highlighting his LASIK surgery on Tiger Woods in 1999 as a marketing tool to brand himself as a "celebrity" doctor. Unfortunately, beyond the image, his apparent lack of attention and care for patients has led to a troubling number of lawsuits.

At that time, my mom handled most of the paperwork/scheduling etc. The surgery went well, and 10 years later I started experienced some vision changes. I recalled that there was a "Lifetime Guarantee," so recently I followed up and requested a consultation for an enhancement. My mother recently passed away, and I haven't been able to find any paperwork for my procedure (which was 15 years ago). I called the office, and they were able to find my file. They asked me how long I'd been going to the eye doctor, and I said about 5 years (since I had a baby and my vision declined). I arrived at the consultation, and it went well. Friendly office staff, etc. I was excited to find out that I was eligible for an enhancement in both eyes. As I was about to leave the appointment, they sat me down with someone to "review paperwork," which is when she informed me that since I hadn't had a full vision evaluation annually since my surgery, I wasn't eligible for the "Lifetime Guarantee" and that I would be charged $3,000 for the enhancement. I asked why it was expected to go to vision appointments annually when you have perfect vision, and she said "company policy." I understand that they are legally in the right, and I'm sure I was informed of this as a teenager; however, I feel taken advantage of. It felt like an ethically ambiguous money-grabbing situation. The surgery went well and I'm sure Dr. Whitten is very skilled; however, the follow-up experience was poor. Be cautious.
