As an active person with scoliosis, which is almost always causing some sort of pain (neck, lower back, upper back, knees - you name it!), I've found that I must truly watch how I workout b/c overdoing it in the wrong ways has truly been counterproductive in the past. I started working out with Steve nine months ago after a back injury kept me in bed for three…read moreweeks. After several months of physical therapy and lacking any instruction for wellness and back care from my physical therapist, a friend of mine suggested I consult with Steve as I contemplated going back to the gym. Steve met with me and went over my goals and developed a very smart workout program that incrementally increased over time in response to my improvement. He helped me improve my core strength and helped me understand how to stretch and workout in ways that improved my back health and my overall health. From the start, I have enjoyed working with Steve and find him to be friendly, patient, and someone who develops a diverse range of workouts that have evolved over time in response to my improvements and also keep me interested in being in the gym. I also find he can put together very challenging but very fun workouts as well. It is a pleasure working with Steve and I am now in great physical shape and feel stronger and healthier - it is one of the best times of my life in terms of physical fitness and health. From what I observe in most trainers at my gym, I can see that Steve is much more attuned to what his clients are doing and very focused on them when they are working with him. He is always helpful and encouraging and has a good sense of when to push and when to step back. I was reluctant to work out with a trainer and only agreed to come due to a friends reference. Steve has always been great with me and helped me devise workouts for the gym, workouts for when a travel, and workout plans that allow me to swim and run in concert with weight training, stretching and aerobic activity. I think taking a trail workout is the best way to see if there is a good fit between you and a trainer. Steve offers these opportunities and I would highly recommend you give it a go and suspect you will chose to train with him. If you follow Steve's recommendations, you will find you achieve and exceed the goals you set for yourself. Good luck!

I've seen a couple friends do a boot camp with another place once... and it kind of seemed…read more.. formulaic and brutal. Not a fun experience at all. So I never joined... I was around the volleyball courts of Sunset Park one day and I saw RBBC... looked a little more like a challenging game show (I am a game show nerd so I walked over). Easily the best boot camp I have ever seen, and the first and only I'd want to be a part of. The classes are challenging, but aren't mindnumbing. You are actually engaged. Mike switches things up every class so the things you did on Monday aren't necessarily the things you'll do Tuesday. And (the gameshow part), there is a game at the end of every workout, which literally milks every last drop of competitiveness you have. Great classes, awesome instructor, and totally not monotonous. And the price was pretty solid too. Can't complain. (That and if I did, he'd probably make me do more burpees)

So, I hurt my knee by being an idiot at a concert. I've been doing crossfit and barbell 5 days a…read moreweek for about a year so I saw some doctors and tried to just work around it. I would rest up, start to feel better, and then out of no where I would re-injure it. Over and over again for a month. Finally, I was talking to my barbell coach and he said "oh, Rena here from Match Fit Performance can help you". The answer to my problems had been lifting right beside me all along. When I met with Rena, she walked me through a few diagnostics, had me try a few moves in front of her and when I was about to say "see, its hopeless!" before I could open my mouth she had it all figured out. She gave me workouts to do daily. They were relatively simple, clearly demonstrated in an app that would remind me what to do daily, and didn't take that long to do. The improvement was rapid once I started doing my exercises. I couldn't believe what a difference Rena made. So happy she helped me through my recovery.

I found Match Fit Performance through the Gotham Knights Rugby Football club. As a new player with…read morethe Gotham Knights, I had found a new passion. I received two injuries, one contusion and torn MCL in my left knee, and one rotator cuff injury. Needless to say, at age 36, the frustration and desire to get back to playing rugby was pretty high. The process of finding in network treatment was a nightmare. After my initial appointment with the doctor (which took more than a week to schedule), a MRI was ordered for my knee. It took another week and a half to get the MRI scheduled, and a few more days for the results to come in, and then another few days to get a follow up appointment with the doctor. The doctor then told me he could not recommend me for physical therapy in network until I got a referral from an orthopedist. After an extensive search for an in network orthopedist with available appointments, I finally got a referral for in network physical therapy. Ultimately it took more than 6 weeks from initial injury until I finally got treatment. My first appointment with the physical therapist I told her that I also had a shoulder injury. The therapist simply told me to "get it checked out" and would not give any advice for treatment. After two appointments and two more weeks I was notified that my sessions would no longer be covered by insurance, and I had no take home exercises from the in network physical therapist. At that point I had it in my mind that I would never play rugby again. All of the wasted time, energy and missed work for appointments at my age seemed foolish. My first appointment with Rena of Match Fit Performance was the first time I felt like I could continue playing rugby. They interviewed me extensively about my injuries, where the pain was, where I was physically before my injury, and what my goals were for physical therapy. I also felt a tremendous amount of empathy for my situation. Rena understood that I was an athlete, and that I wanted to be an athlete again. Immediately my attitude changed toward my recovery goals. I believed I could play rugby again. Rena came up with a comprehensive and personalized plan for my recovery for both my knee and my shoulder injury. She sent me a list or exercises, stretches, and treatment methods, as well as an explanation of what was going on with my injuries and what each treatment was designed to accomplish. As my condition improved the exercises and weekly goals were adjusted accordingly. After two and a half months of weekly sessions, I was back to rugby practice again. All the while Rena was checking up on my progress via email and text and promptly answering any questions I had. The sessions were effective, challenging, fun and personable. They were also tremendously flexible and accommodating with my busy work schedule. I recently returned from playing Rugby in the Bingham Cup. I played five rugby games in 3 days, without any relapse from my previous injuries. Whenever I felt a slight pain or tightness in my shoulder Rena would work with me to on treatment. My team made it to the semi finals of the tournament. The experience was far better than anything I had imagined just 8 months earlier when I became injured. I am forever in debt to Rena and Erwin for their dedication to my recovery process and me. I am certain I would not have returned to playing rugby without them.
