We had one of the most disappointing meal tonight. Both of our steaks were overcooked. Sent one back and still was over cooked the second time. The other was charcoal on the bottom and the server could care less when I said it was inedible. Typically this has been a great place but it will be a long while before we go back. Pheasant and black cod were featured entrees and I was so intrigued with the presentation and friendly host, I forgot about taking photos. I ordered trout, crusted and accompanied by maize cake, harvest veg medley & warm ancho fondue, which was delicious. They offer full and smaller portion servings ~ I appreciated the lesser priced plate - it was entirely sufficient (while my kids had take out boxes for their hamburgers). I liked the right-sized meal - and the food was so good, no one else needed a doggy bag! Our birthday boy had pheasant for the first time and was quite pleased (while his son-in-law echoed praise from a seasoned, accomplished hunter perspective) - very well prepared!) Several ladies asked for modifications to the menu which was handled graciously - the chef served special requests perfectly. We had a semi-private table with effective sound-reducing drapes. There were good wine pairings for the various offerings and they surprised us with a six-layer carrot cake (with lighted candles) for dessert. Nancy Renfro, the charmingly engaging owner, chatted with our table and man-of-honor, and truly made us feel as if we were at a family gathering. We decided to have a girls night out and dine here. The ambiance and decor is simply breathtaking. We were kindly greeted, seated immediately and met by our server Neill. She was simply amazing and extremely attentive. We ordered the sliders, crab cakes and mussels for starters. Each one was very flavorful and fresh. The bar served organic wine flights which were superb. The main course was very tasty. We ordered shrimp & grits, filet mignon, salmon. I want to preface this by saying I never leave reviews but felt obligated and in a hurry to do so. Came in for lunch as a solo customer (sat me in a corner staring at the front door), had no idea who my waitress actually was. Was seated by a young lady who took my drink order as I was trying to sit. Sat down, waited for awhile to see who my waitress would be, hostess came back to ask if I was ready to order? I asked for a tap menu as I was curious what they offered and told her I wanted the salmon burger. 'Oh we ran out' ..its 12:30 on a Wednesday afternoon but ok. I said I would need to look at the menu again. Over heard the 'actual waitress' telling a table she had a 'needy' bridge group and was sorry she hadn't got to them. Makes me wonder what other comments she has had about other customers. Tacky. Paid $7.50 for a beer I can get anywhere else in town for a lot less, had the steak pita (ordered from who I think was the actual waitress?) that would have been better at the pita pit. Steak was chewy and liquid was running out of everything and made for soggy pita. My food was brought to me by yet someone else? Who is my waitress? I left feeling confused. I stopped in solely to find a new place for a 'date night' with my husband. Never again. I usually tip 20% but had no idea who this tip was going to. If it was going to the hostess? I would have left more than the 10% because at least she came by to take stuff off my table and was nice to me. The waitress? seemed annoyed that I asked about sides (again not the original person to tell me they were out of the salmon burger). Awful experience I have never wanted to get out of someplace so badly. Totally bummed. I cook at home all the time for my family and rarely get to have someone give me the same service. The reason to eat out is for good food and good service. Like I said try the Pita Pit and your better off serving yourself than coming here. read more

Brunch with a large group was mediocre at best. My daughter ordered the Mac and Cheese w chicken. The pasta cheese sauce was runny and the chicken was way too over cooked. Unfortunately, my dish, the salmon Benny, was barely warm. The staff struggled with serving our group in a timely manner or together. Half the group was done eating before others received their food. FYI the Benny's are very small portions, several others ordered as well and were very disappointed with serving. Not worth the money charged. I will not return for brunch. read more

It's ok, but every time that I have been in there it smells funny which puts me off my appetite. Also, I feel like the food is "just ok" and overpriced for "just ok". My steak wasn't cooked correctly, I ordered it medium well, it came out undercooked, sent it back and it came back overcooked. Asked my server about the white wine selection, he couldn't tell me much & what he did tell me was incorrect. In a restaurant that is pricing steaks in the $25 and up range I expect a knowledgeable staff and impeccable service. I got neither of those. Can't say that I will ever return, nor will I recommend it to any of my friends. read more

Might actually have been the worst service I have ever had. I don't usually leave negative reviews as I have waited tables in Lawrence in the past, but this warranted comment. We walked in at 11:50 and the server did not take our order until 12:30. She disappeared for long periods and only came to the table 3-4 times. She and the manager both acted like being at work today was an inconvenience. When the food finally came, it was cold, and my daughter's fries tasted like they were a day old. It's a shame because I enjoyed my experience the last time I was here (several months ago), but I doubt I'll be back. I do have to say that there was a guy working who helped us when my daughter had a spill and he also ran our food--he was great and very friendly. Perhaps he should do the training? read more

My husband and I had our wedding at J. Wilson's on Saturday July 20th. We couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Lisa worked with us from day 1 to ensure we had everything we needed to plan the perfect event. We had 21 guests with an event specific menu determined ahead of time. Guests selected their meal in advance and some guests had special dietary needs that required special meals. Not one meal was incorrect including the special ones. Everyone loved their food. The ladies who were working the area were wonderful. They kept glasses full and were in constant communication with us. When it was over my husband said if we ever need a venue for a large get together in the future he wanted to go back and I agree completely. This was the perfect space for a small, intimate wedding/reception. read more

GREAT SPOT!! Every time I come here I have such an awesome experience. The staff is always so friendly from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. On top of the great service, the food is exceptional! Very creative and tasteful menu with an awesome wine list for pairing. This is a great place for any occasion too. I like this restaurant but they have some issues. Decor and owners are lovely, but food needs to improve. It is a bad thing when fish and chips is the best thing on a menu (per the server). Better seafood would help (without pork), and simpler quality meals. Sommelier is downright annoying as it is a mandatory sales event apparently. He should only go to tables if requested. Too much upselling. And they screwed up the bill and overcharged us. I want to like you, but you have to do better. read more

We have new food allergies (epi pen kind of allergies) to deal with, and they were amazingly accommodating and friendly. We've eaten there many times before we knew about the allergies and have always enjoyed it. But I was particularly blown away with how amazing they were for the allergens. The manager highlighted a menu with some suggestions and had it ready for us when we sat down at a table. It was all very good. Their sommelier picked a great wine flight for my meal. This is not a typical review. This is more of a thank you to Lisa, the general manager of the J. Wilson's in Lawrence, Kansas, and Jacob, our waiter. We had an extended family gathering for a bittersweet weekend - first a memorial service for my father-in-law, who had passed away a few months earlier, then a birthday brunch for my mother-in-law the very next day. Family from five states converged. However, when initial Sunday brunch plans were scrapped we had to scramble to find a place that would accommodate almost 30. Most places did not take reservations for Sunday morning gatherings. One manager suggested we just show up and hope for the best. We couldn't do that because many of us were flying out after the brunch. I called J. Wilson's, thinking it was a long shot. Turns out this long shot was a winner. Lisa cheerfully said yes to our big group. Then she proceeded to email me a limited yet varied weekender menu and even added a few extra gluten-free options. When four extra people showed up the morning of, Lisa did not waver or lose her smile. She and our waiter Jacob deftly took the late-comers in stride. While J. Wilson's did not have a private dining room, they managed to create one for our large group. My husband and I shared three dishes - The Classic, the Garden Omelette and the French toast. Four thumbs way, way up for our dishes. Yes, the food is terrific and the prices more than reasonable, but the service from Lisa and her crew was above and beyond. Even though Sunday brunch is a busy time, she reassured us that we could visit for as long as we'd like. While the weekend started with tears at the memorial, it ended with lots of love and laughter at J. Wilson's. read more

We had Sunday brunch here twice last spring. Both times were delightful experiences. The wait staff is well trained, attentive, but not intrusive. The food was well presented and delicious. Tonight we celebrated our youngest son's 21st birthday. Again, the wait staff was wonderful. The wine sommelier recommended a flight of wine, which he customized for each of us. The wines were perfect paired with the cheese plate. Dinner and dessert were as outstanding as their brunch. Thanks for a lovely evening and impeccable service. Bravo!! read more

Went for a leisurely lunch and the waitress was wonderful and left us alone for our conversation and endlessly refilled our iced tea. The salmon was prepared medium which I appreciated because most restaurants overcook fish. I would highly recommend it. Pretty pricey but I don't mind that on occasion for an out-of-the-ordinary meal. I can't afford to go often but will definitely treat myself every now and then. read more
