It was our first time trying Jhaal Restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. They were out of Aloo Tikki, and when we asked for tea, the receptionist said they were out of that too -- which is a basic item that every restaurant usually has. She mentioned they were short-staffed. The food was just okay, and when we asked for medium spice, it came out way too spicy, so we couldn't eat much. We had a family dinner at Jaalsa in Springfield. We had appetizers, naan and each of the six of us ordered an entree to share because we wanted to try a variety of dishes. They offer spice levels from 0-6. We all ordered level 3 or 4 which gave us a nice spice/heat level without being overwhelming. We had so much food that we could have easily gotten by with 3-4 entrees for the six of us. Leftovers today were just as delicious as dinner was last night. We loved everything about our experience at Jaalsa. Service was quick and friendly. The food was incredibly good. read more

The service is good. Very kind people. If you enjoy Indian and/or spicy food, THIS is the place to be. If you're someone who can barely handle the "heat" of pepper...avoid at all costs I was asked what level of spice I wanted from a scale of 1-6, I said 3 and I don't think I could handle a 5 but I'm excited to try it next time! A 1 on that scale, I feel would be the equivalent of Tabasco sauce but thats just my scale. I look forward to trying more items from their menu soon. read more

Found this hidden gem on a road trip to Chicago. Absolutely phenomenal food with a robust menu featuring South Indian street food along with traditional dishes. Including my personal street food favorite Idli, which I've never found on a US menu. It was as delightful as I remembered. I also ordered the vegetable pakora and tandoori chicken- so crazy good! Server was great with providing suggestions for my food allergies too. Decor was modern and fun. I plan to visit during future trips. read more

Great food. My biggest complaint with indiana cuisine and lack of consistency between restaurants with spice level but they seem to have it spot on. I got masala chicken with 4/6 spice level. Very disappointing. Stale food and not tasty and definitely not flavorful. Indian food is all about flavor and believe me, you will not find it here. I have not been to a place where I can't even finish half a chapati with curry. I am not Indian and I think I make better Indian curry. Ambiance? I understand that it is a bar at night but they could have done a better job with the lighting during the daytime. Gives me a headache. No comments on the furniture. Washroom: I think they just cleaned the floor when we were in the restaurant but the floor made sticky noise after each step. I gave it a 2 star because the waitress was nice. Well....im at the other place in town if that says anything. (I think there's only one? Not from here....just here working). Anyhow, went in there about 5:10. Got seated. Waited about ten minutes. Didn't even get my drink (water) order taken. When she looked like she was finally coming my way she went for the table of three nearby that admittedly was there before me. As soon as they started asking her questions left and right about everything on the menu I realized it was going to take a while so I just up and left and came here to gateway to India. I mean....i could've placed my order quick and easy with her...lamb curry, plain naan, water to drink. Ate here one other time. The service was "ok" that time. One person working that time too. Seems they need to up the staff. Granted I realize it was only just after five o'clock....but still. One server should be able to handle promptly the couple tables that were sat. The food that time....it was ok. Not amazing. But I was willing to give it another try. I got a chicken curry with bone in because I saw that on the online menu. I was expecting whole drumsticks chicken curry as I've had elsewhere in the past...but this was "chopped up" chicken with bones! So....as you can imagine, as chicken bones are splintery, needless to say it was kind of a dicey meal trying not to choke. Note....bone in chicken's not like bone in goat! Anyhow....long story short, the service needs work, I may try again, but if gateway to India hits it out of the park, I won't be back. read more

Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon, which restricted us to the buffet. The food isn't bad but the ambience is a bit awkward. The staff were pleasant enough and attentive to taking away plates and all that. The place is a bit cramped and they had some ghastly music (according to my preferences) playing a little too loudly. Walking in I was surprised to see how beautiful they made the place! The service was amazing, very clean place, music was awesome and the food was truly amazing!! Good place to go if you love Indian food, also good to try Indian food if you've never had it. I had the spice level 3 (they have 1-6) and it was perfect. Naan was delicious and fresh, the lunch special came with a good amount of food (I had leftovers), everything is reasonably priced and they have a bar! They also have big tables for parties and a dj booth. This is something we need more of in Springfield! Will be coming back for sure :-) read more

It is hands down the best Indian food in Springfield and Central Illinois. not even close.

The food was very average. We ordered 4 chicken items none of which came with any sauce. Usually at any desi restaurant, you will get mint/cilantro chatni or raita either complementary to the table or with the meat items. We ordered gol gappay and masala fries for apps and fries were undercooked. The sad excuse for gol gappay was just pathetic. Easily the worst I ever had in my life. There were few cold potatoes and some onions for the the filling. The spice water was stale and tasted like it must have been made week ago. We ended up returning the gol gappay. Sadly, I was really looking forward to this place and having it succeed since there are barely any indian restaurants in Springfield area. The best and only highlight of the whole experience was the waiting staff. They were very accommodating and was clearly embarrassed for the quality of food being presented. I don't think I will ever go back but who knows if I hear something good about the food in the future, I might give it another try but for now, I would pass on this place. read more

Went for dinner with the family last night and everything was delicious! We had goat currie, chicken tikka, butter chicken, and some street foods. The garlic naan was very flavorful. We were happy with spice levels 1-2, but they offered up to 6. The space is broken up by long walls, which makes the experience more intimate. read more

This was my second visit to Jaalsa. It received an excellent for the first visit. This time I ordered a takeout vegan lunch consisting of Mixed Veg and a serving of idli. I can't consume spicy food these days so I ordered a spice level of one just to have a little taste of pepper but no burning. I asked if the dish had much oil in it and was told very little. I asked if the dish came with rice and was told yes. After taking the food home, I was very disappointed in what I received. The main dish was brown and unattractive. There were several tablespoons of oil floating on the surface which I decanted off. Rice was not included. I had to take the time to make my own rice. The dish was almost too spicy to eat. The idli and two dipping sauces were the best part of the meal, but for $24 the overall experience was very disappointing. Will think twice before going back. Lastly, not very related, their front door was broken and wouldn't stay closed letting considerable cold air into the waiting area. read more

We've ordered takeout from here twice but have yet eat in, the sweet lassi, Shahi Korma and paneer bhurji are AMAZING. The regular spice level has a nice little spiciness to it, and the foods' seasonings are incredible!
