Let me start by saying that the food here is pretty good. What I don't like is being ripped off. I came in for takeout and ordered Chinatown noodle soup with shrimp dumplings. I asked for roast pork as well and was fine paying extra for it. When I also ordered beef with broccoli and egg foo young and asked for brown rice instead of brown. I was told that Brown rice was an additional charge. $1.50 per pint. I said that I did not want it in addition but instead of the white rice. So they said ok we won't give you white rice but you still have to pay for the Brown rice. I said that they should reduce the cost since I'm not taking the white rice. I also said that every other Chinese restaurant does not charge for subbing Brown rice. This woman tells me that Brown rice is so much more expensive and that white rice is free. And that they have been there for 20 years and they don't need to change. Let's face it nothing is FREE. She just didn't want to bother. I said that I would like her to tell the owner that this is something that would make him lose customers and she just shrugged her shoulders. They don't care. I would say that Fortune Garden is by far the best Chinese cuisine I have been to in quite some time! Located in Staten Island, NY, Fortune Garden's (gourmet) menu is on the expensive side but well worth it. The two times I have eaten there I ordered Grand Marnier Shrimp. The service at this place is exceptional. You really do get treated like royalty, the staff wears suits but you don't feel uncomfortable if you are dressed casually. They are attentive but do not hover. The menu is classic Chinese with a few modern flares. The Gen Tso chicken is great, my mouth just waters as I type this, you must try the spare ribs and pork buns. You really cant go wrong here, anything I have tried has been good. Oh, almost forgot. This is such a small touch but makes me want to go back just for this... the crispy fried noodles that most Chinese places bring out before you order with some duck sauce and hot mustard at Jac Mao's they are freshly fried crisp. Maybe it's just me but most places these days pour them out from a bag. If you are ever in Staten Island... skip the Applebees at the mall and have some fresh food made well and served by a great staff at Jac Maos. read more

Overall a very pleasant experience. From the moment I walked in I was greeted promptly and politely. The ambiance in the restaurant was very nice, the lighting was dim and there was a lot of space. For an appetizer I had the sweet fire wings, they were delicious. Very crispy and they had quite a bit of meat on the bone. It was almost like a general tso batter on wings. Very good. I also got the salt and pepper shrimp and the ying yang steak. My order came fast and was cooked well. The portions were adequate. They have Chinese broccoli and baby bok choy which is rare at most Chinese places. I then ordered dessert and coffee. We had the cheesecake cone. Out of this world. I've ordered from here a bunch of times, and the food is usually good. I've learned to avoid certain things; chicken and broccoli tastes like shrimp (probably cooked in the same pan without it being cleaned). The quality has really been declining. Sometimes I'll get a great tasting fresh order of ribs, other times I'll get tough ribs that taste like they've been reheated multiple times. Used to really like the Beijing chicken but lately I've had to strain the container when I get it because there's a puddle of water underneath the chicken and the broccoli isn't cooked at all. I went here last weekend with my husband and daughter for dinner after work, greeted right away, service was excellent, waiter was very attentive, pretty interior, menu was very varied, which was wonderful. I chose a new special the crispy Mongolian beef. What a great choice, such good flavor, my husband got the sesame chicken, very good too. My daughter got the rainbow chicken, very tasty. We also had wonton and egg drop soup, delicious. The. Noodles they give you right away when you sit down are probably the best I've had. We also had the pork belly sliders served on a Chinese bun. We ordered take out. Food is ok. Chinese dishes was mostly celery, almost no chicken. We ordered sushi and found multiple hairs in our rolls. My husband returned the order that they replaced. We opened the container and there was hair on those sushi too. DISGUSTING!! read more

I love this place. For an extremely reasonable price, you walk out extremely full, feeling good, and feeling well taken care of. Every time I go, the service is incredible. They know the balance between making sure you have everything you need while not being intrusive. The food is really fresh (try ANYTHING with shrimp) and they are really accommodating of food preferences. Also - try the mai tai. It is so delicious and they really know how to mix a drink. They don't rush you at all, and the server made sure that we had everything we wanted. GO HERE! It's so awesome to find a local place where you know you will have an excellent meal. read more

I cannot rate the food because we didn't stay long enough to try it. While we were seated, there was this really foul odor. We discovered that it was the menus. Apparently, they wipe the menus down with a dirty rag that they probably use on the tables. We walked out and told them our baby was getting cranky. read more

Yes! its as good as it gets! WONDERFUL from start to end! We (17 people!) came here for Chinese New Year (landed on a monday so we got the 2 for $45 special, so that was even better!). It was truly a nice way to celebrate CNY with a modern feel. The service was amazing! I jokingly was asking "Who is Jac Mao?" and the waiter says "Well I'm Jac and my dad is Mao. So Jac Mao". OMG the owner was serving us! Very humble and enjoyed serving us for this special occasion. Everything came our nice, hot, and fresh! The appetizers were yummy, the entrees were all so good (we all put our dishes together in the middle to make it family style lol). Dessert was awesome and don't forget a free bottle of wine for every 2 people with this special they had. I came home so full with leftovers. As a chinese-american, this food is beyond "basic". This place has really good food however the service is straight up rude. They're quick to get rid of you and only care about what kind of tip is going to be left. On top of that they are cheap with their items. Both orders were supposed to come with white rice, and we ordered a side of fried rice. Although we paid $17 for the white rice and our meal, they decided we did not need it. The sesame chicken is hella bomb though. They're very cold towards their customers, and even counted our money and tip in front of our face. Never seen that in a restaurant. The food was good but the service was not. I had to get up and approach the waiter whenever someone in my party needed something. When I asked for an additional spoon the waiter snapped at me and told me no because I already had one. Food here is pretty good, albeit a bit on the standard fare list when it comes to selection and preparation methods. It is also a little pricey for the dinner selections, however the quality is basically there & the service is spot on. The look inside is just a bit dated, however one could also state that it is classier than some places of its type on Staten Island, when it comes to eating in. The dumplings are very nice, and it was certainly the kind of place I felt it best to order the more high-end type entrees, which were all nicely done: Jumbo Shrimps with lobster sauce, Orange beef, Lobster in ginger sauce, etc. They also do a pretty good take-out & delivery business for the surrounding communities. Primarily, I would like to see a little updating and expansion of the menu (the addition of a couple of nice duck dishes would be great, such as those served at Oriental Plaza.) OK, this place is kinda weird. Walking in, it's sort of like a time warp back to the 1970's. It's slightly odd and musty-smelling. The waiters are all dressed in none-too-new matching polyester suits. There are huge murals of flowers on the walls, and the back wall is made out of glass blocks - you know, the kind that people thought were ultramodern back before I was born. White tablecloths. I think they're trying to be classy and formal, but it's not really working. They should just go for "tacky tiki bar;" it'd be less of a stretch and would be much more likely to succeed. The menu was surprisingly expensive - $15.-$25. for typical American-style Chinese entrees. I was like, "Ok, this had better taste good." We weren't super-hungry, so four of us decided to share a few things. Wonton soup: extremely good. Nice meaty wontons, tasty roasted pork, plenty of scallions. Egg roll: not very good. Greasy, a little overdone, full of slimy cabbage. Pepper Calamari appetizer: breaded and fried calamari strips served with rice crisp noodles and scallions. A little bland, but all right. Happy Chicken: Chicken in brown sauce with snow peas. I love snow peas, so I liked it. It was good, but not too remarkable. Orange Chicken: pretty good. Good quality chicken, tasty sauce, but not good enough to justify costing a third (at least) more than most Chinese places. I think Fortune Hawaii (which is close by) is better, for this sort of food. read more

I had a craving for Chinese food, and I pass this place on my way to work every day, so decided to check it out. I didn't expect to see a bar first thing walking in, that's definitely a first for me in a Chinese restaurant! The wait staff was very attentive, and checked in regularly to see if I needed anything and to refill my water. Food came fast and was absolutely delicious. The prices are on the mid to higher side for entrees, but well worth it if you're going with a friend or as a group. The servings are enough to share.
