Haven't been here in so long. Decided to order pick up. It's a bit on the pricey side of Chinese takeout. Upon entering the establishment has a pick up area on the left then to the right is a bar area and the dining area. Staff was friendly. My order was ready, however they didn't provide any utensils. Veggie Lo Mein- not so much flavor. Chicken Wings w/ French fries- don't order fries here. Wings were good though. Pepper Steak w/ Onions- it was good even though the ratio with the meat and veggies was a bit off. Pork Roast w/ mixed veggies- it was my least favorite unfortunately. It wasn't good. Shrimp w/ Lobster sauce- my MIL said it was good. It's definitely a spot that is missing a lot of flavor. I probably won't order from here anymore. read more

This place is run down dirty and the food is bland pre cooked reheated . No flavor. Nothing was fresh about anything in this restaurant. I would never come here again. Gnats fruit flies and flies all over the place . The waitress was nice but that was about it. Run down furniture,dirty table cloths. No music or anything playing it's was so quiet ppl were whispering at their tables. Where do I begin? We decided to visit this restaurant because after 30 years on Staten Island, this was one place we had never eaten. When we walked in the first thing I noticed was how old and dated the place looked. I was so surprised. Although the winter, It was sooooo cold inside. There were 3 tables occupied and everyone had their coats on. The waiter also wore a coat and looked like anyone coming in off the street. Hmmmmm! Anyway, we ordered shrimp with broccoli and Lo mein. Duck sauce and noodles along with complimentary soup was provided while we aired for our main course. Our food arrived pretty quickly. We fixed our plates, tasted the food. The shrimp a bit tough, the soup bland and the lo mein very under seasoned. With a full plate of food and more on the serving tray, we prepare to enjoy our lunch. And here's where things go left!!!!! All of a sudden there was massive screaming coming from the kitchen. You could hear dishes breaking, more screaming and the waiter running. Everyone looked around in fear. We asked what was happening and then saw the cook run out of the kitchen with his phone in his hand. "Should we run?" We asked him but he kept walking and screams continued to come out of the kitchen. The waiter never came back at all during the yelling and screaming and no one could tell us if we were safe. Finally the people at the booth in front of us got up and left in a feverish rush. We asked again should we leave because the cook again came out with his cell phone, didnt speak pointed towards the door. We finally got up leaving our food and ran out fearful of what was happening. As we stood around the corner from the restaurant in shock and scared, the waiter ran out and asked us to please pay the $16.00 bill. We looked at him like he was crazy. We went back inside and was confronted by the cook who never spoke to us, pointed at the bill and still had his cell phone up to his ear. I mentioned how afraid I was about what had happens and that I was still shaking. I told him that I don't eat my food because I was so scared never knowing if I was in danger. I told both the cook and waiter that in this day and age, nothing like that should ever happen within any food establishment. This is particularly the case when the fear is caused by the kitchen and cooking staff. After expressing my shock at my experience, the cook walked away. I eat out often and have NEVER experienced anything like this and I will NEVER visit this place again. I'm giving this place a 1 star rating. read more

This is our Chinese restaurant. We come here from Bergen Count, NJ. I used to live in Great Kills. The squid and shrimp with salt and pepper appetizer is unbelievable. You can't find food this good in other restaurants. We come here about once a month. The people are very nice as well. Tasty American style Chinese food. Had a Pu-Pu platter, General Tso's chicken, spare ribs, and soup. The General Tso's chicken was perfectly spicy with a crunch to the exterior and soft and juicy inside. Spare ribs were plump and meaty. Hot and sour soup was just right. There was no one in the dining room at 4pm. I should've taken that as a sign but still wanted to try it. My sister got a tofu vegetable dish that she said was alright. I got the roast pork lo mein with a side of fried rice and wonton soup. The fried rice wasn't good at all. The lomein would've been better if there was more sauce on it and didn't taste burnt. There was barely any meat in the middle of my wonton. It looked dried out. My friend got boneless spareribs and he also said his meal was alright. This is some AWESOME Chinese food! Yesterday my family got general pso's chicken and shrimp in lobster sauce lunch specials and it was right on the money. They gave very generous portions plus you get a soup with the massive amount of food they give you. We got egg drop wonton soups which are usually very gluey at most places but not here, it was smooth and more soupy and the wontons were filled well and not too doughy like most places will prepare them. Another great touch was that the chef threw shreds of pork and scallions into the soup which you rarely see anymore! Moving onto the entree, again both were really well prepared and they didn't skimp! In the shrimp with lobster sauce they gave a generous portion of shrimp that was cooked very well and the sauce, again, was not as gluey as you would typically see at other places! The chicken was not too sweet and was well cleaned, no mouthfuls of breaded and fried fat! We chose pork fried rice, really yummy and what makes they pork fried rice special is that they actually serve a decent amount of pork. Most Chinese restaurant will diced up the pork into tiny pieces but we got chunks in the rice. I think what really sets this place apart is that they absolutely do not cut corners and skimp on their food, you can tell that they keep the customer at the center of their success. Eating from here is always a treat for my family, I just wish we lived a bit closer! read more

I usually come to New Star when i visit my Grandma on Staten Island. They have good lunch specials and I have been pleased with the food on many occasions. The staff is friendly and service is good. Being from Jersey anything that New York has or Staten Island for that matter- when it comes to Chinese or Italian is far superior. I'm not saying this is the best Chinese spot on Staten Island but its pretty good. My go to is the general tso lunch special paired with an egg drop soup. read more

This place was a huge disappointment. Here is why: my husband and I spent all day moving from out of state to Staten Island. We drove here all night and unpacked all day. Throughout the day we commented about "gorging some Chinese food" tonight after we are done. Maybe we were too exhausted to accurately run through all the Chinese food we've had in our almost 7 years of marriage, but neither of us could think of worse. Here's the rundown according to us: Bbq ribs - burnt, very bitter tasting General Tsos - bland chunks of dry chicken with soggy, soggy covering and watery sauce. House Lo Mein - again, bland. A little far from my house but worth the trip. Good food and the most important thing...they received an "A" rating from the Board of Health so I at least it's clean and healthy. I ordered dinner from here tonight, and ordered shrimp with broccoli for my husband and myself. It only took the first bite of the shrimp to tell that it tasted like actual rubber. We didn't touch anything else from our order and called to explain what had happened. The woman on the phone was incredibly aggressive and inconsiderate and literally said "Well, what do you want me to do?", she then explained that they had been cooking shrimp all day with no complaints, as if that should be a sign that our issue with our order was invalid. We were told a manager would call us back, and after 45 minutes of not getting a call (we would have waited longer, but they close at 10:00 and it was 10:05), we finally called back only to get onto the line with someone with an even more horrendous attitude than the first. I have never, ever, been spoken to with such blatant disgust and I also have never heard someone curse as profusely as the woman casually did while telling us that it was essentially our problem and referred us to a Chinese food place up the street from us before hanging up. We threw away over $35 worth of food tonight and I will never think of ordering from here again.
