This place is consistently inconsistent. They have really good food but the quality is hit or miss. The shredded general tsos chicken is a game changer. Their cashew chicken is also a must order. Good won-ton soup that comes with pieces of roasted pork. They have good portion sizes and their prices are pretty comparable to other restaurants in its bracket. However, like I said sometimes the quality just isn't there. I recently ordered pan fried chicken dumplings and a chicken with rice soup. The dumplings were luke warm at best and the "soup" was literally a pint of white rice that was rinsed with broth because there was barely any broth or pieces of chicken. I have tried this place twice now. First time the chicken had some pieces that were rubber. I figured I would give them another try. This time I ordered szechuan dumplings and beef with broccoli. The dumplings were all stuck together dumpling skins with virtually no filling. The beef and broccoli was tough, gristly beef with no sauce, just a few globs of gelatinous brown something that maybe was sauce at one time. The pork fried rice was awful, totally inedible. I ordered from Jac Mao through GrubHub because my friend orders from there often and it didn't seem that bad in comparison to other takeout Chinese food. I decided to go with the Chicken Chow Mein Combo because I was craving noodles; along with other dishes. The delivery was fast, so I was pleased with that. However, once I opened my box of chow mein, I was in complete utter disappointment. There was absolutely NO chow mein whatsoever. Instead, I got a box of fried rice (which comes with the combo) and a pile of soggy vegetables laying on top. Appalled by the food, I gave the restaurant a call to let them know they mixed up my order. As I'm explaining to the lady in English that I ordered chow mein and not vegetables, she tries to explain to me that "chow mein means vegetable." Mind you, I'm Chinese myself, and I know for a FACT that chow mein is a stir-fried noodle dish because MEIN means noodle in Chinese. Fed up with the lady, I start speaking with her in Chinese because I knew she wasn't going to take me seriously in English. She pauses for a second to what I presume is a surprised reaction, but continues to argue with me in Chinese that "chow mein means vegetables in America" and how "Americans like to eat it that way." BITCH, I THINK THE FUCK NOT. She was clearly trying to backtrack her statement about chow mein being vegetables, while failing to do so miserably. So I continue arguing with her more because she's clearly wrong and did not seem willing to give me a refund. She finally offered to give me a small batch of noodles for free, but not without a smart ass comment from her. She says, "Next time if you want noodles, you order chow FUN not chow MEIN." WHEN FUN AND MEIN ARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF NOODLES, BUT NOODLES REGARDLESS! So I tell her this and of course she argues with me some more. I was incredibly fed up at this rate, so I agreed to the free noodles. BUT OF COURSE, she wanted to be a smart-ass some more and said, "You can complain online, but you should tell them that YOU mixed up the order because WE didn't do anything wrong." At this point I've had enough of her dumbassery and just told her to keep the noodles while I contact GrubHub to sort this out. Eventually, Grubhub gives me a refund. And while I was on the phone with them, a person (who I believe is the owner of Jac Mao) delivers the free noodles to my house. If he indeed is the owner, then that was a nice gesture on his part, but I will never order from this place again! ALSO, I almost forgot, but I wasn't even given utensils or napkins with my order. Such disappointing service the other day!! My hubby and I stopped in for an early dinner on a Thursday evening around 5pm. The place was practically empty. We decided to order soup and 4 apps as our main course. We asked to have soup first and we are slow eaters. The apps came out after we took 3 sips of our soups, which were excellent by the way. We felt rushed and asked the that newly cooked food be brought out after we finish our soup. They never made us fresh food and just tried to reheat (barely) the food they had already cooked...twice. It's hard for me to give any Chinese place 5 stars because it's my least favorite food but tonight was the first presidential debate and I was looking for something warm and comforting to consume during that circus. I usually judge Chinese restaurants by their dumplings. These were really good. Not that thick gross dough that's 2 inches thick but thicker than a Thai dumpling. Very good hot and sour soup. Not thick and slimy like the small take out places. Very tasty beef chow fun Lots and lots of beef not just on top. And last was the moo shoo pork with the roll up dough things. Also good. I do the cooking for every holiday but o wasn't feeling well and my family voted me out and said they were ordering Chinese from Oriental Plaza for Easter dinner, do I could rest. This is blasphemous to me to not cook a home cooked meal and getting it from Oriental Plaza which I really do not like. I convinced them to order Jac Mao at least since it had such rave Yelp reviews. I drove over to look at the menu and place my order the day before Easter. When I walked in the slick and space bug and bright restaurant I was greeted by the owner who led me to take out area which has a separate area from the dining room. There were 3 people back there who patiently answered all my questions about the food, I was there over 30 minutes reading the menu I never once felt pressured to hurry. When I went back the next day to pick up my order it was packed and ready for me to take. They saw I was struggling with the bags and insisted on carrying it to my car. There was absolutely no language barrier from anyone I dealt with and were all helpful kind and friendly. Before tasting the food I declared this the only place my family can order from because of the great service. As for the food we placed a large order for 7 people who eat a lot. Everything with the exception of the egg rolls which fell apart when we took out of the bag. They still tasted fine I was told. Everything else was great -house special Shredded General Taos was the best dish it was around $14 and worth it -2 Beef with StringBeans, Beef was tender no fat or gristle I wish the beans were crispier $11 -2 Chicken with Cashews$10, all white meat chicken and crispy celery yum. This order was so huge we barely got halfway through 1 order -Roast Pork Lo Mein$9, thumbs up -large Spare ribs split in half $16, so much meat then I've seem easy to eat -2 Pork Fried Dumplings $5 each order. I hate these kind of dumplings but it's saw people eat them. These are just to big and thick. -so much white Rice and had to pay extra for 1 brown rice. All of this for $136 approx. a bargain for what places charge nowadays for Chinese. They have a parking lot and street parking. It's easy to find and the service is great. Manager nasty, waiter nasty and rude, food was horrible, service terrible, ambiance ok. We got our soups, how can you mess up wonton soup, left a nasty after taste. Dinner also sucked. Since the waiter ignored us, I went to the manager to tell him my friend did not get her sushi and that I wanted to order a different dinner. He yelled at me saying their food is great and that i have a problem. Manager made a scene. I told the waiter I would like to order a different dinner, he told me I have to wait and walked away, (big mistake). My friend ordered 2 shrimp sushi she received shrimp and salmon (wrong). Waiter insisted that's what we ordered. My other friend ordered General Tso chicken, he received fried chicken, (wrong). I also tried to tell him the sauce was not brown sauce, but Teriyaki, he gave me another but it was garlic sauce, then he said it was plum sauce (wrong again). Manager and waiters need anger management and a lesson on how to treat people. We can say that we have been in a quest for good Chinese food for a long time. This place has certainly met our every expectation from our first greet at the door by their manager. We were very lucky to meet and also be seated by an excellent waiter name Kenny. Mr. Kenny introduced great recommendations and also compliments for the dishes we had. The food was excellent. The service excellent. We will certainly be back and are very glad my love has found this place. We highly recommend it, after all great dishes, table cloth professional service, very good prices. Chinese food is tough. It's not easy finding a place that doesn't look like they really do cook with cats and that the cockroaches aren't all over the place in the kitchen. With that said every time I either go here for dinner or order take out the food is so so good. The chicken is always white meat and fresh. I recommend trying just about anything. Jac Mao is what I would consider "classy" Chinese food. It definitely isn't the quick hole in the wall Chinese take out spots that most people are used to. Although they of course do take out and delivery, they also have a nice dining area, which I did dined at once, in addition to may pick up orders. The difference at Jac Mao is that they serve larger "family style" portions which are obviously more expensive than the $9 combination platters that I used to get in Brooklyn. For that reason, I rarely order when I'm eating alone, and opt for Jac Mao only when I'm sharing with multiple people. Of course the crispy general tsos chicken is a must have. It's everything you love about regular general tsos but without the fatty pieces of chicken, only the crispy crunchy parts! The wonton soup, house special chow mein (which includes veggies, chicken, shrimp, pork), and pepper and onion steak are more of my go-to favorite dishes here. The service is also great and my pick up orders are usually ready very quickly. Sometimes I get no answer when I call or they will put me on hold, but it's only because they are so busy! They have probably the closest thing to authentic Chinese on Staten Island. The sushi, which is apparently a new offering, is quite tasty and seems to be fresh the day I went at least. I've had the duck here a few times and it's been pretty good. I can't really complain, I've been to places in Brooklyn on 8th ave and have been to Manhattan Chinatown. So I been living on this island for over 15years an I passed this location over a million times. So sad bc this place is huge an shocking enough very good Chineese food. I was totally shocked. As entering the decor was cool nothing fancy I was feeling the tv projectors (2) an the staff was over loaded with not that many tables so you know my water never went past a half a glass an they kept asking if I wanted more Mai tai lOl um no I'm not trying to get drunk thank you. Appetizers came out very fast an steaming hot, but my main dishes took a while but when did arrive I was blown away for it being so good ESP for Staten Island you don't really eat good Chineese food out here. Server wasn't one of my favorites but the runners an bussers did there things. Because I'm taking care of a sick rottweiler (see Pomodoro review) I decided to call in and pick up food tonight from Fortune Garden. Probably shouldn't have taken psychic in the house next door to the restaurant ($10 special y'all) to forsee that shrimp wrapped in bacon rolls might not fare too well if you weren't eating them moments after they left the kitchen. They definitely suffered a bit during that 20-30 minute delay from packing to getting 'em back home. I ended up dipping them in the duck sauce but felt that they could have used their own sauce. Not sure what kind of sauce...just know that duck sauce didn't quite hit the spot. They packed the pan fried noodles and chicken/veggies separately so the pan fried noodles were still crispy when I got them home. Maybe a little too crispy in fact. Usually pouring the chicken with sauce on top of them makes them a bit softer. Because of the delay in putting them together, noodles are awfully...crunchy. Kind of like very thin spaghetti before you cook it. Very generous portion means I'll be eating this for lunch tomorrow. Hopefully mixing noodles and the chicken veggies together in fridge overnight will result in noodles that are softer while still retaining a bit of their crunch. Sound like Goldilocks don't I? "These noodles are too hard, now they are too soft, why can't I have them JUUUUST right?" :) Maybe I should have sprung for the $10 psychic reading before ordering. My sixth sense is telling me she would have suggested that I order the Grand Marnier Shrimp. Giving the place 3 stars because I'm convinced the food would have been better if I had been able to eat it in the lovely restaurant instead of dragging it home. Update: For those of you who waited with baited breathe to find out how Goldilocks fared after a night's sleep, I'm happy to report that the chicken with pan fried noodles is very tasty after spending a night in the fridge. The noodles are now soft enough that they don't remind me of uncooked spaghetti (and yet it's still clear that they've been pan fried) and all the flavors have steeped into a yummy melange. I guess good things do come to those who wait...sometimes. For me, take out makes me happy if after sitting in the fridge overnight it's even better tasting than when I first brought it home. I came here on a recommendation from a friend, but all I can say is JUST OKAY. It's your basic Chinese food restaurant, with slightly better than average decor, but with average food. The food itself was a little bland, but the presentation was nice. Customer service was excellent, and I never felt like my water glass got to below 1/3 full because they were always walking by. I might come back here, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it. We ordered seafood soup (too hot), singapore mei fun (too bland), seafood eggroll (okay), shrimp dumplings (better than average). Really like this place. Have never really eaten in a Chinese restaurant before, so Jac Mao was a good place to start. To begin, the service was professional. Drink orders were taken and delivered automatically, and dishes were cleared off systematically. The decor is a bit dated, and the boots are kind of far from the table, so I had to remove one star. But it is in no means a deal breaker. Had the wanton in brown sauce, the steamed shrimp dumplings, the Pork Lo mein, the beef & broccoli, and the three peppered chicken. I have to say that we loved everything we ordered. Everything was well seasoned and not the kind of greasy you get from your standard takeout order. I am not from SI, so I can't compare Jac Mao to other Chinese restaurants nearby. I will say, however, that it's probably the best Chinese food that I've had. My iPhone's UrbanSpoon recommended this place, and we figured why not. We drove over, couldn't find parking in the tiny parking lot, then parked on the side street. It was very busy inside, so we decided to get Take Out. We had just missed the lunch specials, but that was okay, because, as it turns out, the food is worth the extra few bucks regardless. We got good portions of what we ordered (General Tso's, and Sesame Chicken) and the egg rolls were big and tasty. The spicy mustard will clear your sinuses quickly but the heat won't linger long, which I enjoyed. All in all, a great place to eat and I'll definitely go again and try out some more dishes. So I had Jac Maos sushi for the first time yesterday.. tbh wasn't crazy about it. I ordered a spicy lobster salad roll and the other roll I believe was red fire or something like that but it's a Cali roll with cooked shrimp, avocado and tobiko on top. HONESTLY, I was expecting more. Now, I'm really not a super sushi eater, I can only tolerate it in waves lol and I won't dare put anything raw in my mouth. However, i can stomach a spicy tuna roll if it agrees with me, but that's as far as I'll go. One pet peeve of mine when it comes to sushi is the size of the pieces, I really cannot stand humongous bites because it gets to be overwhelming and I end up getting nauseous. The red fire roll looked good but it was just ehh. I mean Jac Mao is a bougie spot so I really thought they would use real crab in the California roll, or at least break up the imitation crab instead of just sticking the log in there. I asked for it spicy and it wasn't. The lobster salad roll made me gag, too much of one texture threw me off, just mush. The sushi rice was a little too sweet for my liking as well. I may sound like a rookie but I've tasted bomb sushi before, at previous jobs with real sushi chefs or events and I think I can at least speak for certain rolls, these weren't that good.
