Morning walk to try the drip
Randi C.

I stayed in a place walking distance from this shop. With a catchy name, decided to try it while in SLC. Service was okay. Baristas were trendy, with an attitude that also gave that vibe. I've been on a black coffee kick. Their drip that morning was worth the 2 minute walk. A definite 3.5-4 stars. Way better than the chain who shall not be named.

A unique & vibrant neighborhood haunt. Jack Mormon serves bold brews and boasts a lively, local atmosphere. The roasts are strong and tasty, the baristas are kind and knowledgeable.

I really enjoyed this business. This is my second trip and I am finally reviewing it. They have limited options for coffee and no good options other than coffee cake and biscuits which is totally fine! This has not the best parking for the service is fantastic in the ambience is relaxed. I'd like to stop in here to get my coffee every few weeks before work because it's out of the typical path of traffic.

Lovely stop after an extensive stroll through Memory Grove Park. I ordered a delicious iced coffee to quench my thirst and bought a bag of whole beans to take home to my partner. He loves Jack Mormon Coffee specifically! The baristas are so knowledgeable and friendly. They let me know that additional coffee beans could be ordered online for when I returned to Denver. Cute exterior and industrial-feeling interior with the coffee grinding machines. Would totally come back here again to try more international roasts.

I'm a happy girl! Best nonfat vanilla Latte in town is right here. The parking is street parking in a cute avenues neighborhood. They sell beans, merchandise and best of all have the friendliest most knowledgeable baristas here. I overheard the one barista really educating a customer about coffee and history etc. so cool. Worth checking out. Only bummer is theY are closed on Sundays.

40-60 bean varieties that they can roast for you while you wait along with some damn good espresso? Humina, humina, humina! I love how they named the coffee house Jack Mormon. It's located up in the Avenues, a more liberal area of the city and the definition of Jack Mormon means not Mormon but friendly with Mormons and the Mormon faith, but engages in some non-Mormon vices. Caffeine in this case, being the vice. Wall to wall coffee goodness. There's a chalkboard map on the wall that shows you that their coffee comes from all over the world. Along the back wall are four bright red Coffee Kinetics Roasters. In the back right corner is a nitro tap that produces beerlike coffee. And then there were about 30 bean dispensers on the wall in front of me. What I tried: Cappuccino - The do a great espresso pull here. Strong flavor in their beans, aromatic, good milk foam balance. Can't go wrong with this. Nitro Cold Brew on Tap - The best way to describe this is that it's a coffee version of Guinness beer. The coffee and beer nerd in me had to try it. It was actually a little too dark and strong for me, but it was done really well. If you want something cold, dark, strong and frothy with some carbonation and a thick head of foam, then you've got to try this. The two lady baristas behind the counter were friendly and patient with my questions. It's easy to find parking along the neighborhood streets here. The only drawback might be that the store doesn't open early in the mornings and isn't open at night. If I lived in SLC, I'd find a way to stretch my 15 minute break into a 20 and head over here for a morning or midday break. Where else can you call in your coffee bean order and pick up freshly roasted beans 30 minutes later? Gotta try them all until you find your celestial bean!

The micro-roasters.

Great coffee and hot cocoa, fun atmosphere and sweet staff. Down the street from Java joes also good but I prefer the vibe here.

We had a little friendly rivalry about the difference (and most importantly, the taste) of cold brew vs nitro coffee.

I have also tried some coffee shops near downtown SLC. Salt Lake Roasting Co. is different. They offer a vast selection of beans from Africa, Asia, my country, Indonesia, and South America. This is an advantage because you can try to find varieties of coffee from around the world and mix them. Tips for coffee drinkers: 1. Identify your preference: Do you like bold coffee or fruity? Or, like me, 60% bold and 40% fruity? 2. Ask the barista which matches your preferences, or you can mix your favorites. 3. Buy pour-over coffee and ask to use 50% Brazil/Sumatra for a bold taste, and 50% Ethiopia/Peru/Any fruity beans to add a fruity taste. You can mix anything you want and match any ingredients to create So my point is, drinking coffee doesn't mean you need to drink what the barista serves. At Salt Lake Roasting Co., you can have an adventure of taste. Tips for Home Coffee Brewer: Consult with John, the owner. Ask about your preferences. He is like a doctor who can recommend the perfect beans for you. He is a fantastic guy. I think I like Ethiopia more than Bali, but he highly recommended that I should try Bali Natural. So, I trusted him and bought it, then brewed it at home. He also gave me a small amount of Ethiopian beans to test it. And he is right! I really like Bali Natural compared to Ethiopian beans. (This is personal preference.) Bali Natural has a fruity taste, similar to the Bali Kintamani I usually drink in Indonesia. He roasted it well. He is a genius! You can also get free beans after buying 9 times, if I'm not mistaken.

My personal favorite is the Thousand Mountains blend of Colombian and Guatemalan beans; it's their darkest roast, bold and strong with a hint of chocolate-ness yet smooth and flavorful. I've tried several of Sumato's blends, but this one is tops for me! I've been ordering for a couple years and always appreciate the roasted freshness of their beans when they arrive. Check out Sumato on-line (sumatocoffee.com), and order a "sampler" variety of blends to see which one fits your personal taste palate, or order some as a gift for someone you know who loves coffee!
