I've been to Jack Ryan's 5 times over the years and this was my favorite spot for fine dining in East TX. The service was always great, the food was top notch and the drinks were fantastic. Kilgore and Longview in general just do not have much fine dining. Jack Ryan's was the diamond in the rough. At some point in 2024, Jack Ryan's made a decision to close doors to the general public (outside of private events). My partner and I were crushed as this one of our first picks when it came to going out. In late 2024, they decided to revert their decision and re-open to the public. We were elated. I came here on NYE with my fiance. The hostess working here at the time had a terrible attitude. Our server was mediocre. The food was good - but we could tell it was a different vibe from before. With it being a holiday - we assumed that was the reason for the less than par experience. 3 weeks later, we came back with my brother from out of town. He had a refined palette - so I did what anyone would do trying to impress their brother in ETX - and took him to Jack Ryan's. I made reservations for 5 weeks in advance to be told by the same hostess from weeks before that I had no reservations and could not be seated. After some push back, we were seated near the bar area. It turns out our server was actually the solo bartender for the night. What a nightmare that was. She was absent for most of the night. Drinks were slow. She was nice and this was not her fault. Her company set her up for failure. It was very disappointing! About a week later, I called to complain to the manager, Jason. He apologized profusely and told me to give them another shot. He would make sure we were taken care. While we likely will give them one more chance - I'm pretty much done with Jack Ryan's. Their service has been terrible. The food doesnt have the same magic as before. The bathrooms weren't as clean. I would question coming here and dropping a few hundred dollars until they can get their sparkle back. read more

Fabulous! Fabulous! Fabulous! I drove to Kilgore from Dallas to take my Mother and Best Friend to dinner here. Our server was Shaleigh. She was very knowledgeable about all of my inquiries, are there are many, concerning oils, gluten, etc. The food could not have been more spot on! The Elk was out of this world. My favorite restaurant in Dallas serves Elk also and I didn't think it could compare. It was much bigger, better and $30 less expensive. Best Entree choice on the menu in my opinion. The Ugly Tomato Salad is why you come to East Texas to eat tomatoes! Just Wow! The Chocolate Dessert was the perfect ending. I WILL drive 140 miles here again to experience this and hope Shaleigh can be our server. Love the amazing location and view of all of the Oil Derricks. Really just an overall wonderful experience. Stop in on my way back to Dallas. My wife and I sat at the bar where Kim and Bella are the absolute best! We had the ribeye and an apple butter old fashion that rival's any experience you would have in Dallas. We frequent Al Biernats and a couple others while this hidden jewel exceeds expectations. It had been a few years since we'd been to JR. We went for my birthday. The NY Strip with asparagus and asparagus risotto was excellent. But for a 3 or 4 star restsurant,because of pricing, the service was not 3 or 4 star. I dont know if they are understaffed or what but they need to improve immensely. read more

Last night was date night with my husband. On our list of favorite places to go Jack Ryan's is top five. We hadn't been there in a while so decided make the drive to Kilgore. What an excellent dining experience we had! Lexie , our server , was kind, knowledgeable and attentive. My husband and I both ordered drinks from the bar and I enjoyed one of the best martinis I've ever had. Perfectly balanced and perfectly chilled. We ordered the oysters on the half shell and they were fresh and delicious. I have an allergy to asparagus and the chef accommodated my request to substitute. I had the sea bass and it was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. I am so happy we chose Jack Ryan's. The staff there is exceptional. Great meal! Started with salads, the house salad I would rank a 5 out of 10. Just relatively plain. We also got a ceasar salad and would rank that a 7 out of 10. The Cesar had good flavor, but the parm crisp was kind of overpowering because of the size of it. The lobster Mac n cheese was a 9.2 out of 10. I loved the lump lobster throughout. I also thought it had the right amount of cheese. The reason I deduct the .8 was the size of it because of the price, it is a little smaller than I was anticipating. Now the star of the show, the twice baked potato and ribeye. I asked for my ribeye medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. It was incredibly seasoned and juicy. Every bite was tender. Although this is in an odd place, it is absolutely amazing. The food is always top notch and the bar never disappoints. Lunch is affordable and they have a limited but great menu. First, all the good things: HINT: For the dinner hour, always make a reservation. We did because of the size of our group, but I have heard of people who didn't and were served. 1. Service was excellent. We had a medium sized group and our servers were very attentive; 2. For the members of our party who drink, the cocktails were excellent ; 3. The appetizers were phenomenal (and well they should be because of the price.) 4. The portions were too large for the average eater. My husband and I each ordered a salad and then split a steak. It was a perfect size meal for the both of us. For the not so positive reviews: after talking to 4 other people in our group, we all shared these thoughts: 1. The entree potions are in general too large. All of us but the 2 "football player" size men took leftovers home. Leftovers do not reheat well. Everything dried out and was not enjoyable to eat. 2. It is the vicious cycle of more money, bigger portions or bigger portions, more money. My suggestion is to offer at least 2 sizes of the steak, if not all entrees. The price should be in direct proportion to size. 3. The steak was melt-in-your mouth tender, however the taste was lacking. I like mine with salt and pepper crust, hard seared. This steak has a semi sweet sauce on it. 4. On top of all this we were charged $50 service/convenience. No, it had nothing to do with gratuities. All things considered, we, as a group, will not be back. There are too many other restaurants in the area where the main entrees are just as good for about half the price. My favorite is actually out of state, but for $25 you get wedge salad, 15 oz filet mignon, loaded baked potato, and bread. For $30, you can have 20 oz prime rib. Stopped by for Valentine's Day reservations. 1st time visit. Staff were excellent!! 5 stars right there. However this is known in the area as a high end type steakhouse and pricey. Some wonderful choices and all of the food was nice, so don't get me wrong, very nice again. Just a couple dings on pricing. I did not feel the food and atmosphere were worthy of those prices but heck who isn't charging higher prices these days. The chef did have great plate presentations. My husband and I traveled four hours to eat at this restaurant for our anniversary after it was highly recommended. I called on November 5th at 6:31 pm, to be exact, to ask if a reservation was required. I was told no. We arrived on Saturday evening, 12/7 around 6:10 pm. We drove in pretty heavy rain to get there. We were turned away, and not very nicely. I explained our situation, and the insinuation was that I was being dishonest. I didn't know the details of my call until getting back in the car. I looked back on my phone. There was a 24 second call on 11/5, as noted above. Just long enough to ask that question. So, apparently calling a month in advance does no good. read more

We are not offered many fine cuisine choices in the area so Jack Ryan's gave us the experience We we're looking for , for this particular occasion and they did not disappoint at all! We were able to sit a bit earlier than our reservation and were greeted promptly. I started with their spiced pineapple mule and my fiancé had one of they scotch selections. They filet queso was recommended to us and we loved it!! My fiancé ordered the elk which was perfectly cooked and I had the tuna which was superbly cooked! It's hard to find a chef around here that can properly prepare a tuna steak. Their dessert martini selection topped of our delicious dinner perfectly. Our server was skyler and he did an amazing job! This place is mind blowing for Kilgore. I have eaten at fine dining at many places and I was pleasantly surprised at the fine dining experience in such a small town. The service is impeccable along with the dishes. The price point is great compared to the quality of food and service. The raspberry martini was simply good. The lobster Mac n Cheese for starters for tasty, the sea bass was flaky and buttery and the creme brûlée was delicious. This place definitely ranks up there with the big city high end restaurants. My wife and I ate there yesterday. We arrived at around 1:00pm. The plump Hispanic hostess was rather rude. Not to bad, but you could tell we must have interrupted her business as usual, at this time of day. My wife ordered the Grilled Steak Salad, with dressing on the side. I ordered the Chicken Penne, which was as good as always, except for the fact that I was not given a spoon, and I had to try to eat the bowl of semi-soup with my fork. I finally had to ask for a spoon because my hunger pangs were not getting satisfied enough due to the type utensil. Jack Ryan's could go head-to-head with any big-city five star restaurant. My husband and I have eaten all over the world and agree this is one of the best of the best. The food and service are phenomenal. Our favorites: oysters on the half shell, fried calamari, baby spinach salad, beef tenderloin, and blueberry flapjack dessert. If you're lucky enough to get Bobby as a server, ask him for recommendations. He knocks it out of the park every time! We just found JR's in January and have already been several times. It was an expensive steak and I was very clear that I would rather have it more on the rare side than overcooked. So barely on the rarer end of medium rare. It came out medium at best. He actually debated with me on it , so I asked if he was sure and he said yes. Haven't been back since and won't go back. Been eating steak for almost 50 years . I am very confident what medium rare and rare is. Atmosphere was nice though and other dishes were good. Overpriced ? Yes , just a bit. If i didn't have the overcooked steak and hassle about it , I would go back. For lunch not dinner and I'd order selectively. Chopped steak was real good and much more reasonable. This place was an unexpected treat. Reservations were easy to make online but was not at all busy, so if you go early in the week if you want to avoid the crowd. The food was phenomenal and was brought quickly to the table. We started with the filet queso, which was an incredible portion, and they did not skip on the filet, which was almost as creamy of a bit as the dip. The two sides that came with the steak were delicious and for the cost of a prime cut boneless ribeye as thick as a 2x4, this steak was perfectly cooked, and the glaze was a nice touch. I prefer my steak with a bit more salt, but this is definitely worth it and enough food for two. Not pictured is the Banana dessert, it was a good topper to the meal, the portions were not close to the rest of the meals, but didn't have much room for much more any way. My only knock was our waiter did not fill our waters as much as we would have liked, which was surprising considering the traffic for the evening. Really nice atmosphere and very nice inside and out. Beautiful artwork -well chosen-which adds so much to the space. The waitstaff is truly attentive and our waiter, Jake, was extremely conscientious and knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu and wine list. We ordered the tempura calamari which was excellent.
