Jack Stack is KC BBQ iconoclast. While it's not one of the bbq joints born from the competition circuit, it still meets the high standards of KC BBQ. You can't really call Jack Stack a BBQ joint either. It's a BBQ restaurant. It's hard to go wrong with their menu. Everyone loves the Jack Stack sides of beans, cheesy corn, cheesy potato bake, onion rings, etc. All of their meats are good too, depending on your budget. For higher budgets, the Crown Prime is great. For tighter budgets, one of the sandwiches will be above satisfactory. Don't forget dessert. The carrot cake cupcakes are phenomenal. They have some decent daily specials. On my most recent visit, I got the Tuesday burnt ends special. For $15ish I got a liberal portion of meaty burnt ends with two small sides. It was a pretty good deal. This location is a cool spot in the freight house district. Its ambiance it's great to impress visitors from out of town. I join the masses who think this place is amazing! Jack Stack was stop number two for my husband and I during our Kansas City trip with the intent of trying all the BBQ! We arrived around 430 pm and were sat immediately. My husband uses a wheel chair and it was very accessible. It seems that was the perfect timing because after we were sat it seemed like more and more people began arriving for dinner and the restaurant filled up. Came here for a work dinner and my initial thought was what a fancy restaurant! Getting there is easy, lots of parking but more importantly easily accessible on the street car! I decided to try the Blackberry Basil Lemonade to start off and it was easy on the pallet and had a nice kick also very aesthetically pleasing! Our server was awesome and answered all our questions and checked in multiple times! The wings were our favorite and their ribs were falling off the bone! The coleslaw that they bring you as an appetizer was super good if you like a sweet and tangy coleslaw! The jalapeno was there, but I would have preferred even more. I went with the pick three Kansas City combo ($23.50) for my entrée. I was able to pick three meats along with a side. I went with the turkey, pork burnt ends, and pork spareribs along with the cheesy corn bake. The turkey was not bad. It was a little dry and I was not a big fan of the BBQ sauce that was given as a side. The pork burnt ends were solid while the ribs were my favorite meat tried. The meat was extremely tender and fell right off the bone. The corn bake was more like a soup than I would have thought, but it was great. It was not overly cheese and there was plenty of it. It was EXCELLENT!! Our Server Christina was beyond impressive! She was very friendly, patient, and took great care of us. It was plenty for the 3 of us, as she recommended. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, turkey. The sides were "hickory pit beans", cheesy corn bake, & potato salad. Lean brisket was nothing close to some "awesome KC bbq" (I guess there's a reason for the 3 different bbq sauces. We will say that the turkey (moist), pulled pork, & ribs were very tasty!!! Hickory pit beans were awesome!!! Cheesy corn bake was nice, and the potato salad was a nice surprise. When we left the restaurant, we overheard that there was a 2 hour wait. New to KC area and heard from a friend who used to live in Overland Park that Jack Stack was her favorite KC BBQ spot, so I went with my boyfriend and my parents to try it. We ordered two Kansas City Combo Pick-3s and one side of garlic broccoli, and all were more than sufficient to feed the 4 of us. The meats we picked for the pick-3s are baby back ribs, beef ribs, lamb ribs, crown prime beef rib, beef burnt ends, and beef brisket. We got a side of fries and subbed the second side for coleslaw. Skip the beef ribs, but definitely Do NOT pass up the crown prime beef rib!! It was so tender and melts in your mouth, the regular beef ribs pale in comparison. The lamb ribs are slightly gamey, but not too bad. The rest of the meats were par for the course, very good! But nothing as notable as the crown prime. Yum. Sides were just ok. I'd also recommend you skip the garlic broccoli, as it was just ok. We also got 3 different flavors of lemonade: strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry. I think the strawberry and raspberry lemonades were way too sweet for our palates. The blackberry lemonade was refreshing and crisp, still sweet but not overbearingly. Also, our server was incredible. I forgot his name, but we made sure to give him a good cash tip. My dad spilled his beer after finishing half of it, and the server joked about how it was a great way for him to get a free refill of beer. He also checked up on us a lot. He told the kitchen to split each pick-3 into two plates so that it was easier for us to share among the 4 of us, which was really nice of him and something that is not often offered. Incredible. Probably the only regret I had was sitting outside. We came within an hour of closing, so we just wanted the first available seating so we could leave before the staff got too annoyed with us. But outside had a ton of mosquitoes, and we all got eaten alive. We asked to be moved to another table, but by the time another table was cleared, we had already gotten all the food and decided it was too much work to migrate to another table. If you're prone to bug bites, come earlier than we did and request indoor seating, it's probably worth the extra wait. Overall great bbq spot. Would return again. These are definitely an upscale BBQ places all with basically he same menus. The side are great, the meat is very good, but tends to be fatty so you will end up cutting out the fat or saying "oh well" and end up eating it Their meats are cooked till just about falling apart and incredibly juicy (where the flavor is). Their sauces do not cover up the taste of the meats but enhances them. Their places are great when you do not want the "ambience" of a smoker joint. Proceeded to wait for over fifteen minutes without any of the staff even bringing a glass of water or taking my drink order. I wanted BBQ for our last night in town and we decided to eat here. Walked up at 7pm on a Sunday night with no reservation and was told the wait would be 90 minutes. The restaurant was bustling and so was the bar area. We took a walk around the area for a few minutes and when we came back, the bar area was noticeably calmed down and we were able to find two barstools at the counter. Isaac, the bartender, took our food order and waited on us. We ordered the jalapeño cornbread as a starter and shared the beef burnt ends entree with sides of garlic broccoli and cheesy potatoes. Food was outstanding! And plenty of it. Even with sharing a meal, we still brought home enough food for another meal. Oh and we also ordered butter cake to go. Interior is large and airy, what you would expect it to look like. Isaac was exceptional at his job and did great at keeping tabs on his customers and making sure everyone was taken care of. Before my arrival I was searching for good bbq spots in the area and Jack Stack was an overwhelming choice that kept being recommended, so I figured it was the place to try! I was in a party of two and we were able to be seated right away. We shared an appetizer of the pulled pork Mac and Cheese. I found it to be pretty good. I would rate it a solid 8.5/10. Overall, it had a really good flavor. For my drink I ordered the strawberry Shandy and that was really good. It surprisingly tasted like wine. For my entree I got the pick two deal which was for about $17 more or less. You can pick two meats and they come with fries. I chose the brisket and baby back ribs. My ribs were incredible solid 9/10. The brisket was pretty good (but I didn't like it as much as the ribs). I would give the brisket a 8/10. I also got another drink i believed was called the KC lemonade. That one was really good- it was an alcoholic beverage but it tasted like berry juice or something. Came here with colleagues as I recommended coming here for dinner Have been to Jack Stack at this location several times over the years when in KC. Best BBQ around in my opinion. Definitely prefer Kansas-style BBQ moreso than Texas (sweet) or Carolina (vinegar). My colleagues loved the place and the meat was all perfectly cooked and extremely flavorful. Would never hesitate coming here no matter how busy it is. We were the last to leave this night and were extremely satisfied. Jack Stack is the best barbecue restaurant near Union Station and the Crossroads Arts District. I liked the interior design of the restaurant. I was seated with my group at a round dining table that could comfortably sit around ten people. My meal was delicious. Depending on what they ordered, I heard mixed reviews from other diners in my group. I suggest splurging a little to get a lot more in return, especially if you're a visitor and want to experience high quality Kansas City barbeque. I ordered the KC Combo Dinner with two meat options.
