Leavenworth Road is also KS 5 Highway. It's not in a high-traffic area, but wasn't hard to find using Google Maps. It's not a big storefront, but the signage is pretty effective! The menu is extensive, and I have only tried a few items, but wow. The FLAVOURS are delicious. I tried smoked turkey and brisket and rib tips--the rib tips are chewy little flavour bombs! The turkey-brisket sandwich is a very generous portion. I gladly tasted it to let the staff know my instant reaction, and I honestly couldn't say much but "delicious"--because I didn't want to stop eating! Here a pickle slice isn't a wafer. It's a full 3/4" slice. The BBQ rub/seasoning here is very mild (as I requested), and the drier, crusty parts are so yummy, I have no words. My guess is it was cooked "low and slow" for several hours. It's not a large restaurant, which sort of fits the homey BBQ/smoked meats cultural tradition. If they were in a more central location, it would surely be swamped. I read that they sell out of popular choices, so I arrived early (my usual mid-afternoon between-meals) time. I'm sure that they're often very busy, too. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, making sure I got what I wanted. Kansas City is known for great barbecue, and there are so many options now... but I can't tell you how much I prefer & recommend Holy Smoke over all the other spots! It's located on the Kansas side of the river in Wyandot County where good good KC bbq was born. It's a little off the path but maybe only 10 minutes off the freeway. Parking is easy in front of the tiny building that whips up some of the best bbq around! It's a zero frills type smokehouse, only a few tables inside. The folks preparing this tasty bbq love what they do! They sell out each day & everything is so fresh, juicy and delicious... and not saucy, KC BBQ isn't saucy! I love the Dot sampler bc you get a little bit of everything. The smoked sausages are divine, and I love the rib tips bc they're easy to eat! The wings are fall-off-the-bone delicious. The brisket & pulled pork are staples, of course, and they even have catfish on some days. Get to Holy Smoke now, you won't regret it!! read more

I ordered a 10pc wig pack with bake beans and Cole slaw. My first thought was to look at my food before I leave the place, so I thought. When I got home the chicken wings were hard as hell and rubbery, it was so hard that I couldn't eat it. I heard lots of good things about this place, but was I wrong. I ended up giving to my dog, of course he loved it. I Do Not recommend this place at all based on my experience. Please go somewhere else are make your own BBQ. You will waste your money for sure. We got out of our car and were greeted with the sweet scents of smoky wood and delectable meats. This continued when we opened the door to a small but very clean dining/waiting area with 2 tables and a tv with an order window with a very busy but sweet woman who took our order! We got 2 of the "Slate Plate" platters so we could try a little of everything...WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED! My favorite thing was how different things tasted. Sometimes sauces and beans can start to taste a little samey, not here...everything is unique and dynamic! I will say, the brisket was a touch dry but it wasn't inedible, I would probably just get more sausage! But everything else was amazing! We also got a side of wings and 1/2 slab of ribs! I got there 5 minutes before open and they kicked me out to stand in the cold. No pulled pork, no Mac and cheese, burnt ends only on special so basically you have to get lucky. This place is more like a Gates than a full fledged restaurant if you're not ordering catering. Good for take out as the dining area only has 3 tables. + generous meat portions and good prices. + both mild and hot sauce is pretty good + good soft sandwich split bun + Ribs didn't need sauce + thick cut pickles - The brisket did not pass the pull test and was just ok. Same with the ham and turkey. - I would have rather paid a little more for them to fill up the coleslaw, it just looks sad how little there is in the cup. Overall, the beginning of my experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I went to the place down the street and had a much better experience and food. I won't be back here. read more

This place has been open for 3 years and this weekend was my first time to ever hear of this place. On Yelp it was categorized as a caterer and not as a BBQ restaurant and did not have an address listed; so it has never came up on any searches for me before. I have submitted these changes and hopefully it is corrected to give the Yelping community better awareness of this old school BBQ joint at 80th and Leavenworth Rd. I am a bit nervous about broadcasting their location because this past Sunday at 1:30 pm, they were already sold out of wings and brisket and I really don't want to back and find a line and more sold out items. Luckily there was no line when I arrived but by the time that I left the small room with 2 tables and a few barstools and countertops around the perimeter easily had about 12 people waiting. I chose the 1/2 lb. of rib tips with a side of baked beans. When asked if I wanted mild or hot sauce, I said yes, so they provided a small cup of each. The beans were steaming hot so I had to wait a bit for them to cool down, but when I did they had a great flavor with a bit of meat added. The rib tips were excellent, but probably would pass next time, just for the fact that they are a nuisance to eat ; having to gnaw around the small tips of gristle or bone on each bite. The smokiness was outstanding and the 2 sauces were thick and rich - I loved both. This is a place that I will be returning to again soon to check out the ribs, brisket , wings and sausage. I'm really surprised that I haven't seen Holy Smoke on any top 10 lists. If my second trip is as satisfying as my first, they will soon be on mine. We were looking for KC bbq after a soccer tournament on a Sunday. A lot of places were closed, but we happened upon Holy Smoke BBQ. There is very limited seating (maybe enough for 12), but it's not really a sit-down restaurant. They mainly do carry out and catering, but were super kind to allow our party of 8 to sit and eat. They have a huge following since they are champion barbecue and cater many events outside the location. Whatever they have left available when you do arrive is worth a game change. Brace yourselves folks. I truly love this business and the owners are phenomenal which is why I'm taking the time to speak the truth in love and still giving 3 stars. I've been a customer since the doors first opened. The location is quaint, customer service is superb with the staff being so nice and hospitable, but the food has somewhat lost its taste. Selection-wise there is a great variety, but a few additional sides would be welcomed. Upon initially opening the restaurant the food was always fresh and on point/tasty. Well, from that time to this, some things have changed. Today's visit wasn't good at all. The ribs were tough, I mean beef jerky tough, Philly cheesesteak was way too salty, the coleslaw was horrible (really didn't taste like coleslaw) and the potato salad was rank! This is extremely disappointing. I went in the early afternoon (Sunday) and they'd already run out of baked beans and brisket. The day before the ribs were gone. What? Really??? A bbq restaurant with no ribs??? Omg!!! Come on now, this seems to be an ongoing issue that has gotten progressively worse. I understand purchasing what you can or what is deemed reasonable for your business, however please at least buy extra on weekends and game days. It has become disheartening, but just as important as having enough food is having food that is well prepared and delicious. I'm not certain of what's happened over time or why. Are you rushing to smoke/prepare the ribs? Has the quality/cut of meat changed? Have you changed suppliers? Today's food was unbelievable! Take your time please and put the love back in the ribs/rib tips and get the sides right. The business is there, but it won't be if things don't improve. There's nothing like going home, getting comfortable and ready to tear into dinner and your feathers fall from a meal gone bad! There aren't enough superlatives to describe the food here. In three trips, I've tried the brisket melt, ribs, wings, brisket nachos and brisket Philly. Every trip left me satisfied and wanting to go back and try another menu option. The food is delicious. The brisket is flavorful and tender. Not just a little tender, but very tender. The brisket melt and brisket Philly redefines what these sandwiches should taste like. The ribs are tender with the right amount of pull. The wings are meaty and smokey. The star of the show is their brisket. Always tender and juicy with a medium bark. Don't go here and not try the brisket. It may be one of the best bbq treats in Kansas City. Oh, the nachos. Wow! They come with lettuce, onions, jalapeños, cheese and an especially generous portion of chopped brisket. A great value at $12. The negative is this. They are only open on Saturday and Sunday for carry out. The location is a small cement block building with good signage. Inside there is a window where you order and pay, and a couple places to wait for your food. You can watch them prepare the food through a open door into the kitchen. Staff is very friendly and helpful. If you like KC bbq, go here very soon. They are busy and going to get even busier. This has become my go to place for bbq, especially brisket. read more
