Garlic bread topped in cheese (there's a piece missing because I couldn't wait before I took the picture)

I had quite a day today so I decided to eat my feelings on carbs tonight. No better place to do that than Jack Astor's. I feel like this restaurant knocks everything out of the park with a consistency that is unmatched. The staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly, and I would be amiss not to mention Falisha's incredible presence and attentiveness to my table. Her service was on point all evening, knowing what I needed and making me feel comfortable and relaxed. She's also really funny and made me laugh. The food was out of the kitchen fast, starting with the garlic cheese bread which I highly recommend. Obviously not healthy for you and obviously I don't care because it's delicious. Following the bread was the loaded nachos which were crunchy, fresh and tasty topped with beef. Last up was the chicken fingers with honey garlic sauce and fries on the side. Lightly breaded chicken fingers, seasoned perfectly and crispy golden fries. Delicious! I've been here before and will come back again regardless of how my day went.

When I say exceptional service, it's truly an understatement. I've visited several Jack Astor's locations, but none compare to this one! Dani is outstanding. She greeted us warmly, ensured our drinks were always topped up with the right order, and checked in on us with a constant friendly smile. The service was prompt, and I never had to request anything because Dani was always one step ahead. Pickering, you better watch out, because I'm tempted to bring Dani to my own restaurant!

A group of us (x6) came here to watch a hockey game one night on a weekday. We asked the staff to put the game on the big screen and turn the sound on and they did! The place was really dead, service was a bit slow, but okay overall. The server didn't seem too engaged. The crispy chicken sandwich and Caesar salad were both good. I would get them again. The pickles on the sandwich made it My friends ordered a pitcher of Coors and another of Canadian, and they were both flat. They then proceeded to order beer from cans/bottles. Overall a pretty normal restaurant experience, there's nothing to stop me from going back (unless I was only going for draught beer), but nothing makes me dying to return if that makes sense

Came here with group of friends. It's long week end and this place is busy. Food is good, they run out of Corona beer this time so I take Stella instead. Staff very friendly.

I grew up eating at Jack Astors, it's the type of neighborhood restaurant you can pretty reliably know what you are going to get. Nothing it going to be fantastically artisanal cuisine but the service is solid, the food is good, the beer menu is usually pretty decent. For the type of restaurant this is, it's a very solid choice. If you have guests, or are going to eat with family you pretty much know everyone will find something here to eat. This is a definite go to spot for me to eat or take people to.

It's a nice place, the patio is really beautiful. The food we ordered from mains was chicken pad thai and thai sesame chicken stir fry, the pad thai was not tasty but speaking about thai sesame chicken stir fry on the other hand was simply amazing. Chicken fingers were crispy outside and juicy inside.

Food was average. Nothing special to write about except the lobster crab dip was good. Nice venue and clean place except for the washrooms which ran out of soap and you had to grab the handle again to get out. Also out of paper towels. And the hand sanitizer. Saving grace was the wonderful servers who were always smiling and genuinely very attentive. Would come back for the service and venue but probably not for the food. Soup was salty!

Pretty nice location, but it's your typical Jack Astor's. Not much to write about apart from the food and the service was good. I don't live in the area so I'd probably never come back but won't hesitate if I were.

This Jack Astor's location is by far one of my favourite locations. I've been to a few and this location beats all of the ones that I've been to. Service and food wise. My boyfriend and I came here on Canada Day. We decided to sit on the patio, because the patio at this location is really nice. Especially because it was Canada Day, they had extra decorations, a live DJ, etc. The vibe of this place was really good. Our waitress was kind and attentive. She made sure we had everything and checked up on us here and there. The food was really good! I got the Holy Smokes BBQ Burger with sweet potato fries and it was delicious. The only downfall was that the presentation wasn't that amazing and I felt like they didn't add enough ingredients (looking at others pictures of the Holy Smokes BBQ Burger was much different), however it was still really good. Overall, I would recommend this location to others, especially for them to check out the patio, get food and drinks.

I love this place so much. I and my boyfriend have a dinner there on Sunday afternoon and it's really worth it. Our server Corner is very friendly. The service here is pretty efficiency even when it's a busy Sunday afternoon, we don't have to wait long for the food coming. The food is so good. Hmm.

This Jack Astor's just recently opened and based on our visit, it appears they're still going through some growing pains. They were out of filters to make coffee so they had to run across the street to Starbucks and their deep fryer wasn't working so french fries were out of the questions... not such a bad thing. We ordered from the following items from the lunch menu: Chicken Club Sandwich with a side salad and Blackberry Balsamic Dressing When I looked at this item on the menu it almost appeared to be a slider but turned out to be more food than I expected. It's served on a toasted focaccia which really added flavour to this club and gave it a nice texture. Definitely not your average club sandwich! The salad was fresh and crisp but the kicker here was the dressing... it was fantastic! I would absolutely order this dish again. The Smiling Buddha This dish was definitely the most bang for your buck! The salad was huge and with the various combination of ingredients it made for a well rounded lunch. Although our clubs were delicious, I think this dish was the envy of the table. Chicken Quesadilla and Salad I wish I had a picture to show you just how unimpressive this dish was. When it was placed on the table I honestly thought, 'what's the point?'. This could not have been made on anything larger than a 6" quesadilla. It contained very little chicken and took only four bites to finish. I've seen appetizers bigger than this. Seriously not worth the money!! For the most part, the food and service was good, considering the shortfalls they had to deal with. They just opened so I'm not going to hold it against them. 3.5 stars.

Veggie Burger topped like a Cheeseburger and Lemon Garlic Aioli/Mayo inside with Sweet Potato Fries.

Tip: The sirloin and lobster tail meal for $25 is a great deal…read more After completing a bunch of errands on Saturday, I was ready for lunch. I was in the eastern end of Scarborough, close to Pickering. I first thought of having breakfast for lunch. I would only have 45 minutes to enjoy my food at the nearest breakfast joint. I felt like a steak. I did a search for Chuck's Roadhouse and this one in Pickering was close by. I drove over there, which took roughly nine minutes. It's located in a small plaza. I managed to find a parking spot fairly close to the entrance. I backed my car into the spot and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a friendly woman. She asked me whether I wanted to sit at the bar or the dining area. I went with the latter. I got a menu. I visit Chuck's regularly that I have my usual order. I got the following items: - Diet Coke - Sirloin and lobster tail meal with mashed potatoes and gravy I upgraded my fries. I got mashed potatoes with gravy instead. I asked for a medium doneness for my steak. I placed my order with Domnica, who was extremely attentive and friendly. I needed to use the washroom. I headed over there, dodging two male servers who were kind to get out of the way. My bladder needed attention after three hours of hydration. The women's washroom was clean. There were three stalls. The one that I used was clean. The lock didn't lock properly, but it was good enough to not let anyone in. I got back to my booth and my Diet Coke was on the table. It was cold, fizzy, and delicious. I ended up having a couple of refills during my time here. It was great that I had a huge screen with four different sports happening. I saw the Colorado Avalanche crush the Detroit Red Wings. The Winnipeg Jets pre-game show was on after a women's tennis match. I watched women's curling from Mississauga. There was Formula 1 racing that I had to ignore because any sport on an ice surface interests me a lot more these days. My server put bottles of Chuck's steak sauce and Heinz ketchup on my table. I didn't use any of them, but was glad that I had options. It didn't take long for my meal to arrive. It looked so good. I was so hungry that I went into devour mode. My steak was excellent. It was seasoned nicely and cooked as I liked it to be. So good! The lobster tail was succulent. The clarified butter was excellent with the lobster tail morsels. Frankly, I ended up dunking everything into the butter. My mashed potatoes were so comforting. I usually pour the gravy over the mashed potatoes. I did the reverse. It was enjoyable dunking mashed potatoes into the flavourful gravy. I also dunked sirloin cubs into the gravy. Yum! The corn was yummy. I'm so glad that it's no longer corn on the cob. It's so much easier shovelling kernels of yumminess into my mouth. My server asked if I wanted anything else. I was stuffed. I got the bill. I paid with a credit card. I held my phone to the payment machine after specifying a tip. Done! I stayed a bit longer to finish my Diet Coke while watching the Jets pre-game show. I then used the washroom before heading out. The scary part was walking into the washroom with three loud women speaking Vietnamese to one another. The oldest woman did not lock her stall properly, so I saw more than I had wanted. What I don't get is that these two woman walked the third woman over to the washroom. They stood in front of the sink. Shouldn't they have noticed that the door was wide open? They were loud talking to one another after this incident. Personally, I would have been mortified if someone had seen me partially naked in a public washroom. I came out of the stall to wash my hands. The two women were staring at me. I stared right back with my you-didn't-help-your-friend-and-I-need-therapy-now stare. They stopped looking at me. So weird. Other than seeing a half-naked woman, I had a great lunch here. (53)

Mad Dawgs features many of the same menu items, a similar vibe, and the same really cold, fresh beers and ciders. This is a typical neighborhood pub, with the classic and expected atmosphere. So, while some might think that it lacks ambience, in my view, its just what you expect: homey, casual, cozy, and the server actually remembered what my friend and I used to order at Bollocks! Today, we were just there for drinks, but if you liked Bollocks, then you will be quite at home at Mad Dawgs! I asked our familiar server about changes, and she spoke about some new wing sauces and dry rubs, and some upcoming changes to the menu. Apparently, they now serve brunch!. They still have my favourite buffalo wings, finished on the grill for that smoky flavour. They also still have the Edamame, which my friend and I like to order when we come here. The menu has pub classics, such as fish and chips, burgers, chicken tenders and steak frites. The dizzying variety of Mac and Cheese is new, and very tempting, all made with cavatappi pasta, which I prefer to the typical macaroni. The Nachos are also quite intriguing. Apparently, much of the Bollocks Kitchen Staff has returned, and they have an excellent scratch kitchen, which you wouldn't necessarily expect given the simple, pub-style atmosphere. It's great to see Mad Dawgs staying true to some of the former Bollocks foods, drinks and ambience, while also adding some intriguing new menu items and brunch! I wish them all the best, and I will visit often!

One night the guys from work and I decided we would go for a beer & wings. $13 for the all you can eat wings, and we split a pitcher. You pick your sauce and you start with 6 wings...........then slowly......... yep........ slowly they bring you refills of 4. They make you wait. No doubt part of the strategy, I assume they hope you get full waiting. Perhaps they think it will reduce waste. During our visit we got full while waiting and two us wasted 3 of the 4 wings each. I think this is such a stupid practice. (A) I'd never suggest anyone check it out! So no good word of mouth coming from me (or anyone in my group). (B) I'd certainly not rush to go back here, not now, possibly not ever. During our visit I asked the lady if we could double our order, I let her know I'd eat over 10 wings easily. I was told, "no, other people are waiting." Like you cant drop more in the fryer ? The kicker, the place had two other tables of apx 3 people per table. So 9 people including my group. But again, this is what they make you do. Slow service hoping you get full. I guess they want your $13 and no repeat business. Bar is dated and old looking, as I would suspect. Bathrooms were AWFUL. To be fair I should add, the wings were decent in size. The sauces are just your local grocery store sauces. The wings are all cooked the same, then sauced in your pick. We tried the HOT - it was dusted with some odd spice, not good. The Bufalo wings we ok. The sweet chili reminds me of the PC sauce I buy from no frills, and the parm/garlic were decent. All in all I would not go back. The expericne does not warrant another visit. The way in which they serve the customers is just off putting.

For ages, we passed by Big M, noting its classic retro vibe and steady flow of customers. For years, we brushed off the recommendations of Pickering friends, but now, we have finally decided to stop by for a burger. There is outdoor seating only, so in the winter, Big M is a take-out only restaurant. Nevertheless, it was doing a brisk business at 6:00 on a Saturday. We each ordered Banquet Burgers (cheese and bacon). My husband and daughter ordered fries; I went for onion rings. They also each ordered a milkshake. Our opinion was united in that the burgers, shakes, fries and onion rings were exactly what the traditional, retro décor would lead us to expect. You'll not find surprising toppings or artisanal brioche buns at Big M, nor will you encounter the trending smash-burger. Rather, Big M succeeds because it delivers a fantastic version of the sort of burger that your Dad or Grandpa might have grilled up, or the burgers from that retro diner that you parents may or may not have dropped by on their way to the cottage that your family may or may not have visited or owned. Even if these weren't part of your childhood experiences, Big M serves up great traditional fare. Our burgers were made to order as we watched, and had a pleasantly browned and smoky finish, flame-licked by the grill, fresh, tasty toppings. The burger patty itself was neither thick nor thin, but classic 1/2 inch or so. The toasted Kaiser roll stayed crispy, and survived the trip home without getting soggy. The onion rings were the old fashioned, somewhat ponderous kind, as opposed to a lighter tempura style batter, and I relied on my husband to finish eating them on my behalf. But that substantial batter was exactly the right choice to pair with a traditional burger. The shakes were also traditional milk shakes, as opposed to, simply, "shakes", which may or may not contain actual milk or ice cream. The take-away: Big M is what it appears to be, a classic diner offering simple, diner-style fare. As such, it delivers a satisfying meal that more than meets the expectations: words like retro, traditional and home-style spring to mind. If you are in search of a trending, cheffy and possibly pricy experience (and I do tend to flock to those, when budget permits!), then Big M is probably not for you. However, for well-executed, basic, down to earth cooking, Big M serves up an excellent retro experience at a reasonable price. I'll be back to try the Whistle Dog (cheese and bacon) and the Canadian burger (Cheese and Peameal), plus another order of those indulgent onion rings.
