Located near San Mateo downtown, parking is plentiful and easy to find. The interior is large and bustling. Decor was very cool made the place quite lively. Buffalo chicken wrap (5/5): so checking yummy and delicious. The wrap was nicely made and presentation was great. The chicken was crispy and the other ingredients balanced the texture out nicely. Service was great. On top of that I loved where we sat still indoors but had sizeable openings to let outside air in. Tap to pay is accepted. Overall, Jack's Restaurant and Bar is a great place. This specific location is our favorite due to the restaurant's layout and quality of food.They accommodate us every time we bring our service dog and always leave satisfied. Today I ordered the mediterranean sampler ( which consists of plenty of pita bread, hummus, tzatziki, olives, and diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onions etc)- it is always a great appetizer to start off with as it is fresh and light, and a french dip. Jack's french dip is a customer favorite and honestly it is rightfully so. The sandwich is stacked with tender meat and the bread is fluffy and soft. The au jus is the star of the show! My best gal pal and I celebrated her birthday dinner here. We arrived around 4:30pm on a Saturday. We were seated all the way in the back past the bar. It was more quiet back there. Our waiter was great and arrived at our table pretty fast to take our beverage choice. We both chose an Arnold Palmer and it was the best tasting one I've ever had! I noticed they offered an early bird dinner, even on a Sat., for around $27! The had a 10 oz. NY steak option with bread, soup or salad, mashed potatoes and veggies. My steak was perfectly prepared as I asked- med rare. The mashed potatoes were not salty and tasted buttery and the side of veggies were steamed just right. They do not offer a free dessert for birthdays that I know of but we chose to share a slice of the tuxedo cake. OMG! Large enough for 3 people! Great ganache frosting with layers of chocolate cake and creamy goodness! A few waiters came over and sang Happy Birthday to my friend table side. She loved it! 6/30/24 Zach and I had gone to the Jack's in San Bruno and wanted to try out this Jack's in San Mateo. We walked to Jack's that evening since it's only a 13 minute walk from our apartment. For those of you driving there, they have a sizeable parking lot. When we got there, it was busy but we didn't have to wait that long for a table. Here's what we got: - Lamb and beef meatballs (to share) - Spaghetti carbonara + mixed green salad (mine) - Mama eleni's meatloaf + Cesar salad (his) The meatballs were the first to come out, but it took almost 20 minutes. The meatballs were pretty tasty though. The tomato sauce has a nice kick to it; too bad there wasn't more of the meatballs to eat. Next came the salads that were pretty standard. About 10 minutes later, the main dishes came out. The carbonara was cooked perfectly and I liked that the sauce was creamy. The only thing I didn't like was that there was so much grease when I was finishing up the pasta. I grabbed some of the mashed potatoes that came with Zach's meatloaf and I thought it was pretty bland. The meatloaf itself was good. Our service that day was okay. We got put at a table near a really rowdy crowd and since it looked like the staff wasn't going to ask that table to quiet down, we asked to be moved to a quieter area to which we had to wait 10 minutes for that. Besides that and waiting a long time for the meatballs, service was minimal. Would I personally return....I'm 50/50 but leaning towards no...I will say though that I guess it's a good thing that what I experienced at the other Jack's is consistent with the San Mateo location as well. read more

Stoped by today for the first time since moving here 6 years ago. It's been on the list for a while. We ordered the zucchini cakes to start- delicious! chicken skewers - perfection! That chicken was so tender and so flavorful and so much on my plate! Box please! Last but not least the tutto mare - seafood in it was amazing, a little too much pasta but the sauce and dish as a whole was really good. Mocktails were fabulous. We usually go to Jack's in Pleasant Hill on St Patrick's Day for corned beef and cabbage, but one of our party moved to San Jose so we went to Jacks in San Mateo. Everyone was welcoming and attentive, however the corned beef was awful. It was tough and thin. Looks like we'll be going back to Pleasant Hill next year. read more

I am writing this review that is long overdue for Vanessa and Vanessa specifically. My mother came to town for Mothers Day and one of my moms favorite restaurants to eat at when she visits due to the quality, portion and staff support is Jacks! We had already had a pretty rough day in regards to treatment by others in retail stores at the Stanford Shopping Mall my mom really wanted to go to also during her visit. After those outrageous experiences, we figured we'd end our day together getting a nice dinner here at Jack's. Our server, whose name I don't recall at this time, was irrationally impatient, disassociated and overall overwhelmed, so it seemed. But, upon her being sat with other tables, I was specifically observing her interaction with them in order for me to better gauge what was possibly happening. But, unfortunately, there wasn't anything this particular server was doing to her other tables that supported her behavior towards us. It simply started after my children accidentally spilled a cup of water, which as the person I am when I take my children to eat, I have NO problem cleaning up after them. She saw the spill and let out a pretty significant sigh of distress and frustration. I offered her if she'd provide me with the means to clean it up, I would do it myself. She ignored this request and proceeded to clean it up herself. Afterwards, my mom and I looked at each other trying to understand what could be the underlying issue she may be facing that was aiding in her decision making to our table specifically. Now, we decided to order dessert and this is where it got quite unbearable. We had specific things we had requested from the desserts we ordered which, maybe were a larger request but, I didn't believe so. She then looked at my mother in a moment of about 20 second silence while starting straight into her eyes almost as a challenging stare, and then with the most rudest tone, read out my mom's specific request out loud as if they were BEYOND what she was able to request. When we received our desserts, my mothers did not come with whipped cream and all she had asked for was a side of whipped cream whenever the waitress had the time to bring it. Then this server decided to ask us "really, is there ANYTHING else that you need before I walk away" but not in any interest of ensuring she understood but more as if we were deliberately making her run back and forth. At this point, I was DONE. I lost my appetite and was on the verge of saying F this, I am not interested in sitting here any longer. I then decided to go seek out management to address this terrible experience with hopes I would be heard and understood. Now, I know it was Mother's Day and they were all overwhelmed but, it is not your customers fault. Vanessa, bless her whole heart and mind, didn't even question my concern and addressed it with the greatest amount of respect and kindness. Vanessa SAVED us as customers and protected Jack's reputation as being a great place to dine with the BEST food. And for that, Vanessa if you read this or it is read to you, I want to THANK YOU on behalf of my entire family for protecting our experience and keeping us as customers. THIS IS WHO SHOULD BE IN MANAGEMENT. The biggest praise and round of applause for people like her. We WILL return due to Vanessa. I had dinner at Jack's place on Saturday, May 16 at approximately 7:30 PM. I ordered a beer, spaghetti meatballs, and a Caesar salad. They brought me some bread and butter. I enjoyed the meal. I thought it was a little overpriced but otherwise it was OK. Unfortunately, four hours later I was awoken out of sleep projectile vomiting, all of that dinner. I continue to be sick even to this day after two days of wretched, dry heaving, and everything coming out both ends. I haven't reported this to the health department, but I can assure you this is some type of miss handling of food or surface contamination. I did notice that most of the tables are very dirty when I sat down. Maybe the tables aren't getting decontaminated correctly It's Wednesday as I'm reviewing you and I'm still nauseated in the morning. I would go over safe handling and handwashing routines that need to be done continually during food handling.
