I have been here three or four times in as many months. Its literally the best and absolutely recommend you visit. First, the service is always great. We've had Tim a couple of times and a man named after the Wind. (That's what he told us his name meant but I dont remember his actual name). They know the menu, they're prompt and well dressed. When we've come on a birthday, we get a cute little cut of something sweet with a candle. Second, the food! Man oh man, the food!! They have an insane in-house charcuterie program with incredible imports and lovely accoutrements you dont usually get like tallow and compotes. The main dishes are innovative and flavorful. Plus they plate them on these lovely, hefty ceramics. The drinks are also very very tasty and are truly specialty both in flavor profiles and preparation. They're balanced and punchy. Our dining experience was not necessarily negative, but it did not live up to the expectations that Pausa should have. All in all there were a couple main issues: reservations and special requests that were made for group dining several weeks before hand and confirmed were not honored and , several dishes were "just alright," and the kitchen had "lost" several tickets so items were not delivered and had to be reordered. As we sampled multiple of the Entrees, the only star of the evening was the Mezzi Rigatoni which did make the rounds of the table for everyone to try. This was juxtaposed to other dishes that should have been standout, such as the duck breast or pappardelle to be lackluster in comparison. Dessert was the same, with only the Bombolini a winner. The Tiramisu and Panna Cotta came in at the 5/10 and neither lived up to their name and would be better enjoyed if you were not predisposed to expecting a specific dessert. The Chocolate Trifle was a complete miss. I can see what the aim was but the foam did not work. As someone who doesn't like pizza, I actually enjoyed pausa. The pizzas aren't your standard greasy cardboard pies, but actually have good texture and tastes fresh. We ordered the primavera ($34) to split and it came topped with mozzarella, pesto, ricotta, english peas, fava beans, and spring onions. They also offer chili flakes or this amazing chili oil if you want a splash of heat. It seemed like most tables ordered the margherita, so will have to come by to give it a try. read more

While I could rave about the entire menu, it changes seasonally, so expect to see the dishes in these reviews change. Try anything, you can't go wrong. They make a lot in-house, including the charcuterie, gelato, and breads. Pizza - the dough is special here. I cringe whenever I see customers tossing the crust - such a waste. I'm not a fan of pizza, but Pausa's are exceptional. Charcuterie and cheese boards are the best around. Try the charcuterie and cheese combo board (2 of each) - an off-menu item - and you'll get all the delicious accompaniments including the housemade pickled veggies, seasonal compote, and the hot tigella bread. Service is always knowledgeable, friendly, attentive, and inviting. The restaurant feels trendy, but without the uptight snobbery and is certainly more warm. Parking is available in the parking garage above the restaurant or on nearby surface streets. Dining was available both indoors and outdoors. Service throughout the evening was phenomenal. Thi was a miracle stop. We had a five hour layover in SFO, so dashed out to wish our niece a good graduation. This place is right in downtown San Mateo. And has nice tables on the side walk and a huge indoors. The food is classic Italian with large servings of bread and pasta. It was what I would call classic California Italian. That is lots of pasta and flavors. It really isn't what you'd get in Italy (at least where we've been but given the ingredient choices in the US, it's not bad) The nice thing is that it's in downtown so a nice stroll around. My friend and I made a reservation on OpenTable for Pausa, and we were impressed that it made it onto the Michelin Bib Gourmand list for 2022 and 2023. We ordered the margherita pizza to split! I got the il sobrio (grapefruit, raspberry shrub, lemon juice, spiced orange, soda) and she got the lavender lemonade. The il sobrio was so yummy and had the right level of citrusy flavor juxtaposed with the more straightforward sweetness of the raspberry shrub and bubbly carbonation of the drink. The lavender lemonade was also delicious too! The margherita pizza had an amazing crust- if we had olive oil to dip it into, we most definitely would have. It was so thick and fluffy, but the actual pie dough was very thin. The pizza itself had to be cut with a pair of scissors, but the cheese kept falling off the top! Decent Italian food! Pretty pricey though, dark ambiance. Not my particular cup of tea though I understand the allure. I get why people may like it but just not for me! Food (6/10) - I have mixed feelings about the food. On the one hand, all the appetizers were absolutely DELICIOUS. The creamery burrata with the slightly charred bread had an amazing crunchy texture that was followed by the smoothness of the burrata. The bone marrow had a super rich flavor (that also paired great with the focaccia). On the other hand, I wasn't the biggest fan of the entrees, which arguably, should be the stars of the meal. The mint with the lamb was definitely interesting and added a nice zing. I wasn't a super big fan of the overall lamb taste and texture though. The lamb's pull apart texture reminded me a lot of ribs (which is FINE) but didn't give me that characteristic lamb flavor. Since it was slow braised, that kind of flavor was lost. Additionally, the pasta was extremely chewy and borderline hard. I fully understand the concept of al dente BUT this was not a pleasant mouth feel. It was such a strange texture to bite straight through the pasta with this super firm texture. Price (5/10) - This kind of restaurant is bound to be expensive; you can kind of read from the vibe. I just don't find this place to be particularly worth the cost. I'm sure they use "the freshest ingredients" but the taste is not reflective on the price. I've had comparable or better food for cheaper and much better food for relative prices. Even a small pasta dish costs $30+. Ambiance (7/10) - The dark ambient lighting is intended to "set the mood" but it's just so dark in there :') Service (10/10) - What they do hit on is the amazing service of a restaurant like this! The servers are super friendly and amazing. They know the menu well and give great recommendations. Overall, this particular restaurant wasn't my cup of tea but I can understand if you ARE a fan. Recently celebrated my birthday with friends here and we all really enjoyed our dinner. The service was impeccable throughout the night even though we had a large party. The ambiance was perfect for a group gathering, but it would also be a nice spot for a date. I ordered the cristallo cocktail and it was amazing. I'm always drawn to clarified milk punch cocktails and this one did not disappoint. Onto the food- we ordered the halibut crudo appetizer, margherita pizza, and a red wine mezzi pasta dish. All were absolutely delicious! I will be back to try more items on their menu. read more
