Stumbled upon O'Neill's Irish Pub after dinner in downtown San Mateo when my friends and I were looking for a second location to keep the night going. Lucky for us, it just so happened to be karaoke night (Saturday at around 9 PM)! They checked our IDs at the door and we settled at one of their larger tables for our group of 8. As some of our group went up to the bar to get drinks, they got started on the music. I appreciated that the DJ started the karaoke night off with group songs. They had so many mics and were handing them out to the different groups so everyone could sing along from their tables. After 3-5 group songs that everyone loved and could sing along to, they started to take requests for solo singers. It was fun to see individual singers go up to their "stage" area to sing their songs of choice. Now, I will say, the crowd and vibe was more of a rap/hip hop/alternative rock karaoke with a couple 80s/90s pop songs sprinkled in between. So... if showtunes or ballads or current pop is more your vibe, might have to check out another bar. Or maybe it was just the crowd that night. Either way, it was all a great time and everyone was having fun. No one was being sloppy or annoying and the DJ kept the party going. A great bar if you're a large group looking for plenty of seating and good drinks! read more

Very standard dive bar! All drinks are fairly cheap and the bartenders are all super friendly. The bar itself is what you expect on the smaller side and very lively on weekends. They also have a jukebox! The only annoying thing here is the security. They are fairly rude and not professional. I came here with my family for a special event, and really enjoyed the vibe and mood of the pub. My family and I are Irish and we wanted to go to an Irish pub to celebrate the signing of my last professional contract as an athlete. We grabbed a few or more pints and some whiskeys to add to the mix. We were able to sit in the corner booth and enjoy a good time with each other, while celebrating a special event. My friend is a big fan of Irish pubs and we dropped by here recently. It is one of her favorite Irish pubs in the peninsula area. The night we dropped by had a DJ and live music, a small dance floor. It was probably too early and no one was dancing. A bit disappointing. Drinks are pretty good though. People are nice. The place is lively and very popular. But needs some maintenance. I came here on a Friday afternoon around 2pm with a buddy of mine. He recommended this place and I have no real qualms with O'Neill's Irish Pub. We walked in, there was one bartender but it appears more employees and maybe the owner hangout there (I only say this because they were on the opposite side of the bar but would go behind the bar to grab whatever they wanted). The bartender appeared to know a lot of the patrons by name and what they would want to drink. I thought it was pretty cool that this place has its regulars. The bartender took our order at the bar and since it was so slow during the day she brought the drinks over to us. Also, she didn't worry too much about the bill; she informed us to pay before we left. Pretty chill vibe. Going inside I love going to Irish Pubs. O'Neill's isn't the biggest of places; there are a pretty long bar top, a few table tops and some regular booths. There were plenty of places to sit when we came. Off hours and before anyone got off a work. Perfect to me! Bar was clean. We each got a shot of Jameson and I got a Guinness & my buddy got an 805. The pricing is pretty good. I didn't get to completely see the bill but for all the drinks it was around $25. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here. Although I came during non-peak hours I had an awesome experience. 1st Date with Guy #3 I wanted to keep our date simple and casual so Adam suggested going to one of his favorite bars in San Mateo. We arrived at O'Neils a little before 9pm on a Sunday night and the it was pretty empty except for a group of guys playing dominoes and a couple sitting at the booth. Adam and I sat at the bar. A Stella Artois for me and a Sierra Nevada for him. Celeste: "another round, please" Bartender: "six-fifty" (I give him $10 and he walks away) Adam: "six-fifty?" Celeste: "yeah, I guess beers are only three-twenty-five each.. pretty good price for beers on tap" Adam: "but, it was $5 each a while ago when I bought it for us" Celeste: "really, you paid ten bucks for our beers?" Adam: "he thinks you're cute..." As we slowly drank our beers, we talked and talked some more, we also laughed and flirted with one another. Good times, for sure! Oh, I don't think the bartender thought I was cute, Happy Hour is from Sunday - Tuesday from 9pm - 1am so that's why our beers were so cheap when I paid for 'em.
