    I had some time to myself before an appointment on Saturday so I stopped in at Reposado. The place is very large and beautiful. They just started doing brunch so I was happy to check out their new menu. The service was great and I was well taken care of during my meal. I ordered the crispy plantain chips to start. They were very thin and light, with a creamy dip on the side. For my main dish, I ordered the crepa con mariscos, a delicious mix of crab, shrimp and red snapper wrapped in a light blue corn crepe. It was full seafood in every bite with a nice sauce. I wanted a bit more heat so I asked for some hot sauce and got a habanero cream sauce and a smokey salsa like sauce as well. The habanero sauce was good with it, though I would use it sparingly so you don't overwhelm the flavor of the seafood. The accompanying rice was also tasty, with lots of fresh roasted corn mixed in. My mocktail was fine, though it was a bit on the sour side. I think next time I'll stick to an ice tea or lemonade. Other than my choice of drink, I would definitely visit again with friends. It's a great place to catch up with family and friends over good food.

    Reposado has a lot of potential, but still a few kinks to work out. The ambience and the location is spot-on, although service is a bit stilted and awkward at times. The bathroom is also a hidden challenge, iykyk! We ordered the ceviche ($22), salmon ($40), and enchiladas ($31). The portions are tiny, especially for the price point! The ceviche was good for one person at best, but I definitely don't think the size of the appetizer is large enough to share. The salmon was cooked well (we requested medium), although I didn't think it had much flavor. I was bit bored eating it. The enchiladas were better, primarily because of the green sauce and the pickled veggies. Overall, I found the dishes to be lackluster, which is surprising considering Mexican food is usually bursting with flavor. We requested hot sauce, but the first employee who said he would take care of it never came back for us, and we were halfway done with our entrees when the second person came through. The hot sauce is a habanero sauce and packs a decent punch (good enough to save the dishes), but be warned - they charge $2.50 for a miniscule serving and don't tell you in advance. I don't mind paying extra for things that are worth it, and very much appreciate it when staff are upfront with costs. However, I get annoyed with hidden fees (it's just an easy fix! Just communicate with us.). I understand that everything in a restaurant has a price, but they could have tackled this situation better...even Taco Bell gives out free hot sauce and they aren't in the same caliber! When I brought up the issue, our server stated he would ask management to see if there was anything they could do. They eventually removed the cost, but I think charging customers for condiments is a bit tacky, especially for a more upscale establishment. Since I was already let down by the overall experience, we decided to forego desserts. Will have to continue the hunt for elevated Mexican food in the area.

    We managed to visit Reposada pretty early (in the day and their lifetime that is). With a 5 PM Friday evening dinner, we were some of the first in the restaurant. By 7 PM the place was pretty full and the bar jam packed. Chips & guac (and salsas) - While the chips were colorful, the taste was a little one note. None of the salsas were spicy, which was fine by me! The guac was good as it always is, but I was waiting for them to put a spin on it. Brussel sprouts - These were very yummy and something you can't recreate at home. They had a tahini and pomegranate glaze with a hint of spice. Hit the spot. Reposada salad - I was probably most excited for the cornbread croutons. The actual salad could have used a couple more ingredients. Maybe some avocado or corn. The portion was also pretty small. The lettuce to topping goodness ratio felt a little off. A few more ingredients would have been fair for the price. Plantain upside down cake - The best part of the night. Our awesome waiter gave us his favorite dessert complimentary since we were having a belated birthdays (plural) dinner. This cake was amazing, and the flavors were complex. It also had a side of ice cream. There was sweet honey and a little salt. I can't speak to any of the mains, but my apples to apples judgement of a Mexican restaurant is the chips and salsa. I forgot to photograph most of the food because we were having such a good time. The actual decorations give fancy restaurant vibes. Don't skip dessert! This applies to most situations but especially at Reposada. PSA (Parking Service Announcement): I parked in a garage (free parking) just below the restaurant. Even though I frequent San Mateo, I never knew about this garage. It is easy to miss the very small entryway to the garage and hard to understand the confusing and small signage about "public parking" vs "retail parking".

    We came for the soft opening for a group Valentine's Day dinner and Reposado delivered one of the best meals I've had so far in 2026. We started with the Bruselas which paired chipotle glaze and tahini dressing for a flavorful twist to roasted brussels. The freshly made chips and salsa came with both red and green salsas, perfectly paired with the House Made Guacamole. For entrees we had the Pollo Rostisado, Branzino Veracruz, Puerco Asado, and Crepas Con Mariscos. We usually go home with leftovers but there was nothing left to take home. I recommend the Pollo Rostisado if you want a flavorful and hearty meal. The Jasmine white rice, fire roasted vegetables, rotisserie chicken and mole sauce went incredibly well together. They have a robust tequila menu, coffee, and a good variety of desserts. A good number of them incorporated fruit and we really liked the bread pudding with plantains. Pros: Delicious entrees, wide selection of tequilas, beautiful, warm and comfortable decor, friendly service. Cons: NA

    We had the pleasure of dining at Reposado in San Mateo last night for the first time, and the experience was outstanding. From the moment we entered, the host greeted us warmly and went above and beyond even opening the door for us as we left. Throughout our meal, the service was impeccable and the staff was very attentive and professional. We came in without a reservation, and were seated promptly despite the busy evening. Our server, whose name I wish I remembered, was friendly and truly enhanced the evening. The food and drinks was equally impressive, we ordered Sangria, Guacamole with chips and salsa, Branzino, Betabel salad and a side of elote. Overall, Reposado delivered a memorable evening, combining excellent service and delightful flavors!

    I had a bit of a mixed experience at Reposado in San Mateo... We started with the Bruselas( fried Brussels sprouts with pomegranate chipotle glaze and tahini dressing) and honestly, they were fantastic. Super crispy, really flavorful, with that perfect balance between sweet and smoky. The tahini added a nice creamy touch that made the whole dish come together beautifully. Definitely one of the highlights. The queso fundido was another hit, make yourself a favor and order it!!! Then we tried the Pancita, the crispy pork belly with tortillas, guacamole, and pico de gallo. This one was a bit of a letdown. The texture was good, but overall it felt pretty bland. Nothing really stood out, and it was missing that punch of flavor you'd expect, especially from a Mexican dish. For the mains, the Costilla (braised short rib in adobo) was very enjoyable. The meat was tender and rich, and the sauce had a nice depth of flavor. It felt like a well-executed, comforting dish. Unfortunately, the Crepas con Mariscos didn't work at all for us. The idea sounds amazing, seafood-filled blue corn crepes with poblano cream, but the reality was disappointing. To our palates tasted almost like nothing, which is a shame considering the ingredients. It really lacked personality for the entire group. That's kind of the theme of the meal: some dishes were really good, others just didn't deliver. And with Mexican cuisine, you expect bold, clear flavors, so when that's missing, it's noticeable. The place itself is beautiful, very elegant, stylish, and clearly newly done. The decor feels refined and thoughtfully designed. The only odd thing is that getting to the bathroom is like...going through a labirinth! Service, unfortunately, wasn't great. Our food arrived before we even had utensils, and we had to call the waiter multiple times just to get water or order more wine. That said, it might be because they've opened fairly recently, so hopefully it's just something they'll improve with time. Overall, there's definitely potential here...thinking to plan another visit in a few months :)

    WARNING! This business is using an unethical checkout practice to trick customers into overpaying their bill. Our bill was split three ways and my guest check correctly presented my one-third of the F&B, but it presented the gross amount of the mandatory gratuity. I have owned and operated 30 restaurants and I have never seen a guest check presented in this intentionally confusing way. By presenting these mismatched amounts as two line items above a blank write-in line for the check total, owners of this restaurant are baiting customers to add those two figures, plus any additional gratuity they may add, to their check total. This would grossly overstate the amount customers should pay. Astute customers might compare their check signature check to the full check that shows the F&B and gratuity in detail and figure it out, but some customers will fall for this deceit. No quality of food or service can make up for unethical business practices. I recommend against dining at this restaurant.

    The new place in town! Nice interior with a full bar not just margaritas on the menu. Since it's new everyone was checking it out and it was a full house. Service was attentive, water glasses full at all times and multiple waitstaff asking if everything was ok. We started with manhattans and chips and guacamole. Fun presentation and good guacamole but at just shy of $20 it's a bit pricey. Not a lot of traditional menu items although they are prepped with items like black beans and mole sauce. We tried the Salmon and the chicken dish. Both were good sizes and flavorful. Since the place is new there aren't a lot of postings yet, I've added a few more for reference

    Brand new spot that was making me feel all classy when I walked in due to the decor and other diners. We enjoyed the branzino (well-balanced flavors and skin had a good sear) and crepas (creamy, cheesy, crabby in a good way). Good service staff. Definitely a bit pricey, but a much needed non-Asian and upscale addition to San Mateo downtown!

    What a treat this in my back yard! We used to have to drive to Palo Alto to get some of their dishes, e.g. my hands down favorite--their fire roasted poblano sandwich with cashew cream of some sort and a queso sauce or dairy-based toppings, which stops it from being vegan. But I rationalize and get it anyway. This kitchen turns out some pretty refined dishes, e.g. their sodas and chicken mole divine, super moist, barely need a knife to cut through it. Their mole anything, e.g. pollo enchiladas are insanely good, with rice and beans which sounds basic but is anything but. Their fried plantains with the dip ng sauce makes you wonder why you never ever give plantains another look in the market. Their corn is charred and the chef manages to coax out the flavor of each kernel in a way I can't do at home. Their caesar salad has a Mexican twist that's worth it. They have the best vegan dessert in the business (Palo Alto has it as well) and it's my go to: a citrus, coconut milk based pan cotta. OMG it's melt in your mouth bright and sunny and zingy and creamy and everything that's good on this green earth, I swear. My husband got some sort of caramel bread pudding thing, which he instantly devoured. This flavor profile is not my jam, but he loved it. The interior is stunning, just gorgeous, cavernous with room after room after another, with a bar area. And we went on a weekend evening when it was jam packed--but guess. What? It was not deafening, which is the only reason I could even go there. They have wonderful acoustic muffling surfaces, super thoughtful. The customer service fantastically present and on the ball. The prices, for the execution, flavors, and ingredients, are on point. Parking is also doable.

As a speakeasy enthusiast myself I definitely agree to the fact that it is "hidden" but also it does kinda give corporate vibes a little bit - maybe we can say they "gentrified" the speakeasy experience which is honestly so funny for Palo Alto. But anyways I don't think a classification should stop you from visiting it. The food is actually surprisingly really good. We came with a pescatarian and honestly while the offerings for snacks were a bit slim, every option was really good. I feel like this was the first time where I understood the price even the the quantity is no where close to be desired. One shrimp is like $6 and I was like whoah. Service is definitely more laid back and it's overall just like a more chill atmosphere. I'm fortunate to work nearby so I'll definitely visit this place a few times after work to blow off some steam... And the drinks! Yes they are good! They are also quite strong! Would come back again but also if you're conscious of budget then I'm not sure if you'll find the same value proposition.

Using that language sets up an expectation that neither the ambiance nor the vibe is able to live up to. I can only assume that those reviews that commend this place as a speakeasy have never actually been to a real speakeasy and are more accustomed to box restaurants and bars. I sat at the bar and ordered a bourbon neat with a water back. There were three staff members behind the bar, none of them were particularly friendly or outgoing, which as someone who worked in the industry for years is surprising as a new establishment. Even though it was happy hour time, it was a Wednesday the place was less than half full and good servers /bartenders normally add to the experience and help creat a customer base of regulars to sustain business after the "come see" crowd is over. I ordered d' nuts as a snack and they weren't very special, even a bit overcooked / burnt. Maybe this place is exciting for a Palo Alto crowd that doesn't get out much, especially on the stretch of California given the lack of competition. My guess is that after a few months they will be hard-pressed to find a steady crowd.
