This is the kind of used bookstore you hope to find! There are piles and piles of books, grouped by subject area. There is a mixture of all sorts of books, including government publications, small brochures, self-published books, and textbooks. I found a couple of books that I've never seen before. I spent over an hour here just looking at books in one specific area because they are piled on the floor and on top of the bookshelves. I'm so glad I was able to come here and will definitely stop by again when I'm in the area. read more

Whenever in Old Market, I always drop by Jackson Street Booksellers to browse their vast selection of books. The store is full of options both new and old, but can be a bit overwhelming at first. There are sections for all genres of books, but it can be a bit difficult to navigate especially on busy weekends. I finally received the books I purchased from Jackson Street booksellers. I was told to ask for Carl who's the owner and a complete gentleman. I was there for the business and economics section, however they have a vast book selection and a broad spectrum of subjects. When Carl walked me over to the business and economics section it was so well organized I was able to take my time and go through it one book at a time. I found several books on Howard Hughes that I wasn't expecting to see. His staff is great, very hospitable. If you're ever in Omaha Nebraska make sure you visit Jackson Street booksellers. I will be back next year, God willing and the next time I will make my schedule so that I can spend time there. The price of the books are fair and of value. You will not be disappointed. read more

This bookstore is so large and so packed with books...it's almost unbelievable. Can be overwhelming, but if you are looking for something, the staff are happy to help you. These are used books, prices are penciled inside. The books are reasonably priced, obviously some of the books will be higher priced for reasons. Reading books can transport you to another place, but even just being in this bookstore is like being transported. read more

Oh boy, where do I start? First of all, the selection was out of this world. Books everywhere, on the shelves, piled up, I loved it. They had so many old books, it was fascinating seeing when each was printed. Most paperbacks were at a great price, $2-$3, but they had tons of rare books which were more expensive, including an 1819 print of Don Quixote. I was so impressed by the reviews of this place that I couldn't wait to go. I walked in and literally zero people were helpful. I wasn't even sure I was in the right place. But everything was fine at first and the selection of books is amazing! As I was looking at a book, one of the employees stopped me and asked me to put down my coffee. Mind you there are no places to put anything down and my coffee was sweating a bit so I didn't wanna put it down anywhere near any of the books. He then proceeds to take it from me and go put it somewhere else. Honestly, it was just a really bad vibe and I wanted to get out of there ASAP. Not friendly at all. I also heard a man ask politely where they moved the science fiction books too, and one of the workers yelled back that "it's always been!". Just honestly not at all what I was hoping for whenever I go into a bookshop. Won't return. :( read more

We passed by this store and decided to walk in. This place is definitely an old bookstore. It looks a little creepy but it's not. There is so many books in here. The crazy part was everything was extremely organized. There are old but and a lot of new books as well. The prices are okay but I love supporting book stores. Sure, you can go to other stores or websites, but can you also support a local bookseller while doing that? Here you can, and it's so worth it. Fair warning this place is huge and the shelves just keep going so if you get overwhelmed easily, you will in this store. That being said they have the books sorted by genre and they are willing to help you find the sections. I will admit it was hard to find my way around without a map. I ended up getting two books that I can't wait to read. The book jackets also have a plastic covering that helps protect them from damage. read more

It is so nice to see an independent bookstore that is actually growing! While I admit to shopping Amazon since 2007, I love going to bookstores. And, in the ones I've been to over the past few years, outside of Barnes and Noble, this was the largest and most well stocked. Organized? Well, it doesn't matter. There are bookcases after bookcases of used books of all sorts. We had so much fun walking through - I love the smell of old books. They have a nice selection of antique books as well as first editions (signed and unsigned). They also have a variety of screen printed posters which we fun to look at. We did pick up a few books to bring back to friends and family as gifts. Thanks to the owners for keeping independent bookstores alive and vibrant. And, thanks to the people who work there who clearly love their jobs. read more

Yes Virginia, there is a heaven, and it's located at 1119 Jackson Street in Omaha Nebraska. This is the book store you've seen in a hundred romcoms but thought didn't really exist, or if it did exist, was in some far off hipster enclave you'd never actually be able to visit; maybe in Seattle or Brooklyn. Well I got news for you Virginia, this is the real deal and it's right here in Omaha. Fourteen thousand books in a wonderful old building with a friendly knowledgeable owner who doesn't need to check on a computer to tell you if she has the book you're looking for, she just knows. read more

I wa so delighted to find this bookstore. I love books, and the smell of a huge bookshop. The experienced staff, able to help you find or order whatever is known to be in print. Truly awesome. They carry rare and signed works of a large variety. The variety dazzles me. I could spend hours there. Better still for my limited income, their used books aren't so expensive (unless you want the rare, fancy ones), so there really is something for every reader. It's close to restaurants and bars, and an excellent cigar lounge, making it a new favorite spot. read more

The layout is fun and maximalist while also creating the feeling of being on an adventure to discover the titles that could be lurking around each corner. This is likely the best bookstore in Omaha. Lightning has been updated and AC has been added. There are more books here than in all the other bookstores combined, I think. Organization lacks, and the bathroom looks like some hoarders have taken up residence. But the book selection is what counts, and that they have in spades. Books are stacked from floor to ceiling and "somewhat" organized into various topical areas. If you are willing to look, there are some really nice older books. The staff is also very helpful in pointing you in the right direction, but you're going to have to dig for whatever you are looking for since the individual books are not cataloged. Fantastic selection, cheap prices, and friendly workers. What more can be asked of a bookshop? The sheer amount, delightful smell, and varying range of the books is truly remarkable (bringing to mind a reclusive author's personal writing space), if at first a bit frenetic/overwhelming... but that only exhorts one to stay longer and see what great things the store has to offer. And those things are numerous: everything from Plautus to Søren Kierkegaard to David Foster Wallace to usage dictionaries to 900-page-long tell-alls on the Third Reich. If you're looking for it, you are most certain to find it. Books in immaculate condition lined up quasi-alphabetically on racks, stacked on the ground, neatly lined on the bottoms of towering shelves; rolling library ladders; different nooks and crannies to sit and read... make no mistake--this is a library of antiquity through and through. It's probably not the best thing to hear one salesperson say to another, "Hey, do you smell gas?" when you're standing in the back of a bookstore chock full of used hardback and paperback books stacked wall to wall, floor to ceiling, most on shelves, but many just stacked on the floor waiting to be shelf stocked. If there was a gas leak at Jackson Street Bookseller, no one decided to light up a cigarette or otherwise cause a spark until I found a book, a cookbook on Portuguese cuisine, paid for it and walked out the door. Jackson Street Booksellers is a kind of a mess of a bookstore, but it does have a lot of books of every genre for most every taste. We are moving to Omaha this summer and were recently in town to house hunt and generally check out the area. On our last day in town, we decided to head down to Old Market for lunch and to wander around a bit. On the way back to the car, we just happened to stumble upon this place and being a bunch of book nerds in our family, we had to stop in. And man, am I glad we did. What a fantastic place. I've never seen another bookstore find a way to get so many books into their space. The walls are just jam packed with books on any topic. On this day, I found a book in the Psychology section on Attachment Theory, a theory I have dabbled in for my research. I didn't buy it but the fact that they had a book on this little theory is an indication of the selection and the types of variety you are likely to find on any given day in the store. I can't speak to the prices because we didn't end up picking anything up but I can't wait to get back into town to explore this place some more. read more

I wanted to tell a brief story about Jackson Street Booksellers. I believe this story is important to people who want to know about the quality of Jackson Street Booksellers. In August 2k11, I went to Jackson Street Booksellers to sell some books on behalf of a friend. These books were mostly old, they belonged to my friend's grandfather. One book, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS, caught the eye of the booksellers. After awhile they informed me that they could not make a "fair" offer on this book at the moment, and asked me to come back in a few days. I immediately went home and looked up THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS. Turns out, in mint condition, the book is worth $20,000 dollars. My friend's copy was not in mint condition, but after hunting around the web I determined that my friend's copy was worth between $3,000 and $5,000. Neither me nor my friend were aware of the book's value, and the people at Jackson Street Booksellers could've easily made a tidy profit off of our ignorance. They chose not to. This, to me, is important. What happened to the book? Well, the folks at Jackson Street Booksellers offered to sell the book on consignment. I relayed this offer to my friend, he declined. He is holding onto THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS for awhile. read more

Jackson St. Bookstore is one of Omaha's treasures. As mentioned earlier, Jackson St. has the best selection of used books in Omaha while still managing to be pretty organized. As a student of literary/creative nonfiction, I especially appreciate that they let my pet genre have its own section. The staff knows their stuff, which also helps. The one complaint (but not enough to knock their rating): that bathroom behind the storeroom really needs to be a little more ready and able to serve customers. read more

My friend and I are both in love with this place. Books from ground to ceiling stacked in piles, in shelves, in every nook and cranny of free space you can find. You can't really find this type of store anywhere else. A real gem for sure, tucked away in Old Market next to a bar and a tattoo parlor-- if you blinked twice you'd have probably missed it. The thing I love the most is the friendly staff and the awesome vibe. So simple and cool. It's a cavern of printed word. If you put some tables in here, I'd probably come here to study for sure. The smell of books is just so amazing...ahhh *inahles* :) Whether or not you are a certified "bookworm" I think you'll be able to find something for you. Their collection is quite extensive, from modern western history to the 19th century to road maps to fiction-- they literally have it all. While it may seem that the store is an unorganized mess, it's actually pretty organized.. by topic and then by author. It's all about exploring the store! We actually stopped by two days in a row because we didn't have enough time on the first day. I would highly recommend visiting here if you're in the Old Market area. read more

Huge racks of the greatest books of any genre you will find. It's incredibly well-organized, and it just blows your mind going in there. You could look for hours. I always spend too much money here. I definitely recommend looking for lit class books you need here before going to the University Bookstore. They usually have just what you're looking for, even if it's a different edition. Mostly, though, this place is great for browsing. Everything you find really feels like a lost treasure found. The help staff is interesting. I've walked in to hear "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses playing; and, other times, there is the lady who owns the shop who is always up for long conversation, especially if you are a fan of NPR. I'm a bit of a bookworm and spend quite a bit of time in used bookstores. Really, where else am I going to discover a book I may not have heard of, is out of print, and/or is completely interesting (ie my next great read)? Half a year ago I was in Omaha on business and finished the book I was reading. I was in town alone, and tended to take the book with me everywhere. Thankfully Jackson Street Booksellers came to my rescue. I spent about thirty minutes perusing the REALLY tall bookshelves, and piles of books on the floor. I'm clumsy, so I was nervous I would mis-step and knock everything over. (That sounds like a negative, but I actually love bookstores that are chock a block absolutely full to the brim with books.) I loved all of the step ladders for searching the top shelves, although at times it was hard to find a place to completely open the ladders due to the stacks of books on the floor. I found five books that I had to read. Since I didn't have the extra room in my suitcase, I spent another twenty minutes narrowing down to just the one book. read more

A classic used bookshop, the sort that you don't find anymore. The place is chronically overstuffed, so shopping here can feel a bit like a treasure hunt, climbing to the tops of very tall bookshelves to look behind piles of books at other piles of books. But there are pleasures to be had, and Jackson Street allows something you won't find in online bookshops: The possibility for pure serendipity. There are books here that are out of print, and books that are unjustly obscure, and books that are specialized or regional or idiosyncratic to the degree that your unlikely ever to find them, but for just stumbling upon them in a used book store. And one of these might wind up being your favorite, and how would you ever have known about it otherwise? The staff is friendly and helpful, but, honestly, go in without any plan and buy whatever looks interesting. Adventure a little. read more

My favorite used bookstore in Omaha! They are pretty well-organized and have great stock; I always find several gems in here. The lighting is somewhat random, with lamps standing/hanging all over the place, but you can move them if they're in the way. Chairs are scattered throughout the shop. Prices are reasonable. The only thing that bothers me is the occasional cigarette smoke. read more
