We celebrated our son's birthday and had a wonderful evening. Matt, our waiter, was phenomenal -- warm, attentive, and genuinely great customer and people skills, which made the night feel special. We ordered the 16‑oz prime rib with mac and cheese, pork chops with au gratin potatoes, and the Beso Del Mar. The prime rib was tender and flavorful with a nicely seasoned crust; the mac and cheese was rich and creamy. The pork chops were well seasoned and paired perfectly with the au gratin, which had a golden, cheesy top. Beso del Mar-Spanish translation"Kiss of the Sea" Truly a "melt-in-your-mouth" experience. You get the soft, buttery risotto and tender shrimp. The restaurant's atmosphere felt upscale but relaxed -- ideal for a birthday dinner. We celebrated our anniversary here. Overall, the experience was good but with all the hype, I was expecting a bit more. The blue crab beignets were flavorful, but a little too crunchy almost like they had been pre-cooked and held under heat. I had the blackberry smash, and that was spot on. For my entrée, the duck breast was cooked perfectly and paired really well. My wife ordered the Tournedos Americana. She said it was a bit tough and mentioned she would've preferred the petite filet instead. Our server, Matt, was excellent very attentive and engaged the entire time. You could tell he has a strong instinct for sales, always looking for opportunities to suggest add-ons without being pushy. Not saying we wouldn't come back we might but for us, the food didn't quite live up to the hype. That said, the service was outstanding. read more

Great Southern Restaurant Group's restaurant week began on January 26 and features 3-course dinners for $33 at its five sister restaurants (Jackson's, Angelena's , Atlas, The Fish House and 5 Sisters). This my favorite annual event. Last night was dinner at Jackson's with a group of friends. You'd think that there would be a reduction in food and quality because of the reduced price, but Jackson's never disappoints. There was a choice of three items per course and we all chose different items. I chose the spinach salad (a little heavy on the dressing that I should have asked for on the side), the catch (swordfish), and the bourbon bread pudding. Shrimp and beef were the other entree options that everyone who ordered it enjoyed. My only criticism is that our server was a bit grouchy and unfriendly. I understand that it can be difficult to serve a table of 8, but a 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill so I am not excusing her attitude. (Yes, I know I could have reduced the tip, but I chose not to.). Four stars out of 5 because I don't think our service was up to Jackson's standards. I really wanted to like this place, but I've been twice now about a year apart and both times the food and service has just not been good. Ordered scallops the first time which were just not good. Probably the saltiest scallops I've ever eaten. I ate about half of one and had to stop. The duck my friend ordered was cold. And I don't just mean it wasn't warm, I mean cold like it just came out of the refrigerator. The second time I got French onion soup. The soup and onions were good, but the bread was soggy which was less than ideal. I ordered the old fashioned steak. The Mac and cheese was okay. There was no bacon in it. It just tasted like bacon was used to make the rue, interesting. The fried green tomato had no flavor it desperately needed salt. The crab tasted like it came from a can and the steak was inedible. I told the waitress the steak was not good while she was at the bar and not to make a big deal of it because I was not going to finish it. She later came to the table and asked if I wanted the steak to go... it was quite awkward because the steak was awful. I didn't want the steak taken off the bill or anything like that, just didn't like it and didn't want it to be a big deal. I'm unimpressed by the service I received both times and it's frustrating to be the only person I know who's had an experience like this on two separate occasions. I will absolutely not be back. I'm really not seeing the appeal with this place. It's dimly lit like it's perfect for an anniversary or celebration, but you'll just leave disappointed and wanting to pick up McDonalds on the way home. read more

Jackson's is our new Mastro's. We used to live a handful of miles from Mastro's in Malibu so you can understand the need, the urgency, to find a new local steakhouse. I kid (about the urgency anyway). That was our only local half worthy bar! But now here, we really did seek out a steakhouse and Jackson's fit the bill delightfully. We entered, it was loud, we were lead to the 2nd dining room where we were seated. We were in a 2 top right along the high traffic entry into the 2nd dining room. Which was confusing bc I book through OpenTable a lot so why would you stick me there? You can see I eat out A LOT. But I chalk it up to novice hostesses who instead put the non alcohol drinking teens at the window two tables down from us (hello?! Much lower bill & tip!). BUT it was all up from there. It was chilly in the dining room admittedly. But I should've known better. I liked the decor. Very Southern Steakhouse. Reminiscent of steakhouses in Charleston. White table cloths. Big, rotating menus. Excellent options to add on top of your steak, an array of sauces. Family style sides. Crab cake. Caviar. We had a delicious soup appetizer and the cocktails were outstanding. I rarely drink cocktails but a kiwi kiss? How could I resist! I liked the decor. It had an earthy feel to it. Branch like candelabras, warm hues and tones, a giant hillside scape painting behind the main bar. Pretty. Warm. Welcoming. Our waitress was pleasant. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the menu. The bread was hot a fantastic. The beef - wonderful. Melt in your mouth. No tomahawk here but really, how frequently does one need to eat a tomahawk! I was thrilled with my medallions and my husband with his rib eye. Friendly welcoming staff. Pricey restaurant. The menu had so many good items. Was a tough choice what to pick, We settled on the blue crab beignets, Cesar salad, French onion soup n gulf coast seafood chowder. When I think of beignets always think of the sweet ones. This was different n delicious . One of a kind. The seafood chowder was good too n so were the French onion soup n Cesar salad. For entrees we picked the long stemmed artichoke, crab cakes, petit filet n open fired gulf grouper. The artichoke was different had sautéed onions n was ok. The crab cakes were tasted so good. The grouper was delicious n v flavorful. The filet v moist n tender n tasted good. We ended our meal w some deserts - chocolate mousse that melts in your mouth , bread pudding w whiskey sauce was sooo good n a different phyllo purse that tasted so good -one of a kind. We're here in our hometown twice a year and always enjoy a Friday lunch at Jackson's. We love this restaurant for its "old" (not Driftwood, etc. old but recent old, LOL) Pensacola fine dining ambiance here in the heart of downtown. The venue also reminds us of New Orleans with its French windows offering views of bustling Palafox Street on the west side and live oak shaded Plaza Ferdinand just across Zaragoza Street to north. While the kitchen's offerings are not five star in our estimation the food is quite good and enjoyable. The menu is well rounded and interesting, even at this once a week lunch service. Jackson's offers a very nice wine menu and cocktails are always perfectly and generously poured. At lunch, the first Martini is on the house and subsequent Martinis are $10! What's not to love about that?! The service here has never disappointed and today was no exception. Our server, Sophia, was so pleasant, gracious, helpful, and perfectly attentive through-out our meal. She paced the service perfectly. We started with a shared Fried Green Tomato and Jumbo Lump Crab Salad with Bill-E's Smoked bacon, artisanal greens, herb-roasted mushrooms, goat cheese, jumbo lump crab, and a shallot-champagne vinaigrette. This was outstanding! (See pic). A definite do again. However, we did not ask for it be plated separately but the kitchen did and we were nicked for a separate plate charge of $5. For a salad! It would have been good to have been informed of this charge in advance. Anne had the fire grilled grouper and I ordered the French Dip. The grouper was not over cooked but still the flesh was quite dry and the fish did not taste fresh. The French dip was good but not great. Would have enjoyed a much heartier and robust au jus. The skin-on french fries were not at all crisp. Pretty, meh. But we''ll be back Lord willin' and the creek don't rise on a Friday next May or so. read more

The steak here was REALLY good. It was perfectly cooked (we asked for medium rare). One of us had the truffle oil dip. That was good. The other two had steak topped with fried green tomato and crab. Service was good and friendly. We thought we wouldn't need reservations on a weeknight. We are not locals, and we were wrong! There was a concert so lots and lots of reservations made. The filet was cooked to perfection, incredibly tender and flavorful, and the scallops were some of the best we've had anywhere. The scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts were the perfect accompaniments, rich, flavorful, and expertly prepared. We finished with the crème brûlée and bread pudding, and both desserts were exceptional. What truly elevated the night into something unforgettable, though, was our waiter, Thomas. We discovered Jackson Steakhouse last summer just by chance and went back again tonight and I'm just saying...it really doesn't get any better than this! Steaks all tender and cooked to perfection. We ordered 4 sides for the 6 of us and more than enough to share giving us such a great variety! The bread and butter, so fresh and light! The Brussels were amazing, not sweet but more salty, just wonderful. Our waiter was so sweet joining in on our movie convo and on top of all our needs. The atmosphere is top too. Emily got Matthew involved quickly and was resolved in a most excellent way. Great spot for quite comfortable dinner. David was our server who was spot on with suggestions and very attentive service. Attentive but not smothering. The food and drinks were beyond expectation. My wife and the filet medallions and I had the scallops. Both were delicious. We especially love the Pâte à choux Crab Beignets. The absolute best blue Crab Beignets served with a spicy garlic chili tarter sauce on top of lemon. Sublime. No one makes them better than Jackson's. The steaks are also excellent, we love the filet with the green peppercorn sauce. The best green peppercorn sauce I have ever had. We also LOVE they have a option to make the Caesar salads with real anchovies the traditional way. My Fave. The new greek inspired seasonal salad is also excellent. Should just add it to the menu :).. The Hickory fired wild sockeye salmon is a well thought out dish. A symphony of perfectly balanced flavors. We had a wonderful time celebrating at Jackson's, the service from Danielle was phenomenal! We made a reservation through Open Table and got an awesome spot by the window. The complementary bread is actually locally made by Emerald Coast Bread Company, their Rustic loaf! The crab cake appetizer was another highlight, as was the complimentary dessert because of our special occasion. I did enjoy the lump crab and fried green tomatoes, but I felt the sirloin was a bit underseasoned. It didn't wow me like how I felt after trying my boyfriend's lamb chops he got- he absolutely loved them. Jackson's is a must stop in Pensacola. Serving upscale food in a building built in the 1860s off Plaza Ferdinand where Andrew Jackson accepted the transfer of Florida to the U.S. from Spain in 1821. The dining room is a high-ceilinged classic steakhouse with touches of the Gulf Coast. The menu has classic steakhouse fare with gulf coast seafood and touches of Cajun cuisine. The wait staff and service are impeccable, and Thomas is the best of the best with the ability to make your mouth water with adjective filled descriptions of any dish on the menu. For drinks, the wine list is definitely one of the best in the area and the cocktail menu is wonderful with a great Smoked Pecan Old Fashion and for starters, I would highly recommend the Burnt Ends Confit which are essentially melt in your mouth meat lollipops. And for your main course, the steaks are fantastic and every option is amazing with the Delmonico stealing the show. For the entrees, the Tournedos Americana deserves a special mention served with two tenderloins and red wine demi-glace over a bed of whipped potatoes. And for dessert, the bread pudding is fantastic as well as the Key Lime Phyllo Purse. Despite Jackson's focus on upscale dining, there are several weekly specials to mention. Prime Rib Tuesday's features a 16 oz. prime rib and a baked potato for $19.95. Additionally, Wine Down Wednesdays allow you to imbibe in Jackson's award-winning wine selection with half-priced bottles. We went for restaurant week and while the food was good and the restaurant is pretty, our experience was not the fine dining we had hoped. Truthfully it could be due them being understaffed - I'm not sure - but to clarify before going into detail, I do want to say that everyone on the staff was incredibly friendly so no complaints there! We got bread to start which was INCREDIBLE - so fluffy and crusty. However, the bread took such a long time to get to our table that our bread plates had already been taken, so we ate without them which got a bit messy. For the appetizer course, the salad was missing its cheese and by the time we were able to let the waiter know and get some cheese, the entrees were already coming out. The drinks and dessert were also good, but overall we were underwhelmed by the experience. Husband and I went last night for Special Prime Rib night. Instead of being served a 16oz prime Rib we were served what looked like a 12 oz which was full of fat. Maybe 5 oz's of edible meat. We were so looking forward to a nice date night from our kids, who gave us a gift card for Christmas. What a disappointment! The steak was so thin it was ridiculous. Food was mediocre at best. I ordered a Caesar salad to start that was severely underdressed. Adding more dressing didn't help however, just wasn't good. We split a filet, side of whipped potatoes and brussel sprouts. We ordered the steak medium and it came out rare, despite them splitting it in the kitchen and bringing it out on two separate plates so they could clearly see it wasn't up to temp, they still served it to us. Sides were cold right off the bat and the sprouts were overcooked but flavor was good. Once they fixed the steak, it was ok. I got the piggyback chop (pork chop). Included a corn hash, Brussels, & a hatch chili sauce. SO good. So many flavors! The pork chop was perfectly seasoned and cooked. 10/10 recommend. Made reservations here on a saturday night for an anniversary dinner- it was our first time here and we loved it! All of the food was amazing- we got the bacon and oyster app, french onion soup, steaks with the oscar topping (to die for), a few sides, and we got a complimentary ice cream dessert for celebrating our anniversary there. The steaks melt in your mouth! Loved the natural lighting from the windows as well as the dimly lit lamps. Perfect location in downtown pensacola.
