Im in town for 10 days and want this place to be decent so bad that I tried it three times before I just gave up. The place has all of the makings of a very good restaurant but obviously doesn't care. Every order was wrong from the way the food was prepared to the way it was presented. Medium well steak served rare. 1/3 of it was so rare I couldn't touch it. They were fine with bringing me the bill didn't even offer a box for the left over portion. Marinara sauce for an appetizer came in a plastic container with a peal top lid served cold, don't try too hard guys! You dont want onions on your burger, no problem, here's some onions for you. Forget it. There is a number of much higher rated places in the area, try them instead. read more

This was my first and last time dining at this restaurant, we were seated quickly and given menus,about ten minutes later server came and took our order,I had the hamburger steak with onions,peppers and mushroom with French fries, my son and his wife both had the pulled pork plate with coleslaw and baked beans and I ordered a blooming onion for appetizer, twenty minutes came and went and no appetizer and when it eventually came it was burnt,you could actually smell it but before we could say anything to the server she was gone so we just sat there waiting for her to come back through so we could tell her but she disappeared so another customer noticed our situation and told his server what happened and she took the burnt onion and brought back a fresh order, then finally after we had been there and waited for our food for an an hour it came,I didn't want to leave because I thought the food would make up for the time we had been there but another disappointment,the food was not good at all and they didn't even make it the way I ordered it,the food was a 0 for me and a 0 for service and I will never go back or recommend this place to anyone, they really do need to improve on both areas, the food and service, I feel that the people who goes there are just used to the way these people run their business but kudos to them because if I'm spending good money I want good food and service as well and by the way it was over $50 for the three of us! We have come here for years. Over the years, the food quality and portions have deteriorated. The service has always been slow, not conducive to interstate road travel. We came to Jake & Rip's for a late Mother's Day lunch. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. During this time, the hostess asked twice how many were in the party. There was no other party waiting. Then, we waited about 10 minutes for our waitress to greet us. Gave our drink order to her and got drinks quickly. We then ordered our meals. We waited well over 30 minutes for our food: five pulled park plates and one mushroom Swiss burger. ALL of the pork plates were COLD. The pork was cold. The baked beans were cold. The corn on the cob was cold. The Texas toast was out of the refrigerator, not toasted cold! The only thing that was warm was the burger. We had to ask for refills on tea. This dining experience was such a disappointment. We won't be coming back anytime soon. read more

Horrible service and food was cold! After waiting several minutes for our food, we got the food and it was stale and tasted like it was heated and not cooked. What a diamond in the rough! Best catfish I've ever had and the breading on fish and shrimp was fantastic. Very light, so you actually taste the fish and shrimp, not breading. Kudos to the chef. read more

Went in for lunch alone to try the place out. Music and atmosphere caught my attention first. The blues music and the nostalgic feel was the best part of the visit. I had no idea what I wanted to eat so I stuck with the center of the menu and opted for the pulled pork plate. Nothing on the plate disappointed. Poor service... food okay...can not recommend! But, I would like to recommend that the waitresses write down the orders. We ordered an appetizer, 3 sandwiches with extra sides of corn and okra, and catfish. Part of our food came out after about 20 minutes. We asked about our appetizer and extra sides and were told they would be coming out shortly( I think she forgot). About 30 minutes later she came to check on us. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but for the last two years or so, the service has really declined and it is obvious the owners are not present as much as in the past. The last two times I was there, the same manager was in charge and I was not impressed. It's as if all the servers are her friends and can get by with poor service. Tonight, we were there and my husband and I ordered the catfish platters with no sides, just extra hush puppies. We were given our drinks, then didn't see her again for quite a while. We finally flagged her down again and asked her to check on our appetizers as it had been a while. She came back to the table with them practically followed by someone else with our food. I said "I ordered the fish plate with extra hush puppies and no side and there are none." The person who delivered our meal said, "we're out of hush puppies." I said, "How do you serve catfish and run out of hush puppies???" She replied curtly, "Well, we're out!" Our server was long gone by that point, so I had to go to the bar area to get ketchup and asked for the manager to inquire about how they serve fried catfish with out hush puppies and she quickly replied they were making more right now. She said they had run out of milk, but went out to get more. She said she would ensure I got some as soon as they were done. Meanwhile... as my husband, son and I are finishing our fish, a huge seafood platter full of hush puppies is served at a table that had been seated a long time after we were there. Finally, our server comes by and we point out that the other table was served a platter full of hush puppies. She left and several minutes later, she came back with six hush puppies. I asked for a refill on my drink, but never got one. I'm really disappointed, because Jake and Rip's used to be a favorite place to eat. Here on a business trip and stopped in based on hotel recommendation. Plentiful food and the barbecue had an amazing smoked flavor you would want but not expect. Catfish was fresh and well made with the dill flavor tartar sauce. Enjoyed and will return when we are back. read more

We were driving back to Illinois from New Orleans looking for something other than the typical chain restaurant and found this wonderful place with a great bbq smell coming from it. The BBQ sauce was dark and amazing and we don't have anything like it near us. I wish these guys bottled it. I am looking for recipes for Mississippi-style sauce--it seemed to have lots of molasses and great taste in general. I want to remember this place should we come back down that far south. Loved the atmosphere and decorations , but we had to walk over spilled food on the floor to get to our seat. We decided on the Catfish platter until we found out the whole fish platter was only 1. We asked how many filets were on the platter and she said 7 or 8 so we asked what size they were and by her description they were chips. So we had to look at the menu. She took our drink order and said she would be back. We waited and waited: meanwhile, the flies almost ate us up and we wanted to relax and enjoy ,not fight flies. So we left. After hearing about great food, we stopped by Sunday evening. Service was fast. Appetizers came out and the sausage was greasy and old. Then the BBQ platter came out. Chicken was so rubbery that it could not be cut with a knife, ribs were so old and dry you could not tear the meat off the bone, the pulled pork was ok but cold again showing that it was old. We were driving from Texas to Nashville and thought "ummm looks like a cool place to eat" BIG MISTAKE! The best thing about this place was the sinks in the ladies bathroom (they were sweet!) and the door hitting my butt on the way out. We were seated quickly. Ordered ice tea. So strong and bitter we sent it back and asked for water (it was good). I asked I I could have a bite size sample of the pulled pork to see if I wanted to order it. She was like "oh I don't know if we can do that..." Can you ask??? She brought be back 2 slivers of pork and said "umm I snuck this out we are really not suppose to do this" If there were a next time (which there will NOT be) I would just order the meal then when it is horrible I will send the whole meal back so they can throw the whole meal out. So I ordered the pulled pork chips from the appetizer section for my meal. My husband orders the catfish platter (when asked the waitress did not know if it was fresh or frozen catfish). My chips were burnt (I could not believe the cook would send burnt chips out or that the waitress would even serve them) and very greasy. My husbands baked potato had only sour cream and bacon on it when he specifically asked for neither (he is a vegetarian). When they brought him another one it had only sour cream on it. Third time was the charm. His hush puppies were totally raw inside. The waitress was not terrible but due to her lackadaisical attitude we salvaged what we could of the meal and asked for the bill. We had been charged for our tea that we had sent back. Got that fixed and paid. Lastly as I am getting up from our table I look up at all the animals on the walls and notice everything up on the wall is covered in dust.
