Properly prepared dogs, but way off-balanced Spot #5 of 6 in our hot dog trek, and we were in probably the swankiest place we've been thus far. This place is very affluent, so there's lots of shopping opportunities in this area. tucked in the parking lot of one of these places is a large duplex-sized place called Jakes, which has a ton of good press online. We go in, and the place is somewhat dim. The place is small but very dark. It kind of reminds me of a collectables shop in terms of the ambiance. Functional, but not very inviting. The menu has pretty much all hot dogs, and lots of them. The sheer amount of unique dogs is impressive. This being one of our later stops in our trek, we opted for a chicken teriyaki dog and a Seattle dog for comparisons. The food comes out quick, we take pics and dig in. First off, the hot dog to bun ratio was way off. the hot dogs were way too small for the bun, which was very evident with the Seattle dog. So you would get lots of bread with a little bit of dog on each bite. Second, the hot dogs were actually very salty. This usually has no real bearing on the dish, since I do like my salt. The problem being that the two hot dogs we got had high salt condiments on them (bacon and chicken teriyaki). the combo of salt on salt just lead to some very salty bites. The dogs themselves were prepared properly. I do enjoy the split and grill method of dog cooking. but there was a major lack of balance with the two we got. If we got hot dogs that had other non-salty ingredients, then these dogs would be good. but as prepared, they were a little off. It's an option if you want a hot dog, I would probably avoid the two that we got unless you like salty dogs. read more

After devouring pizza and alcohol at the Colony Grill, my bff, Pots & Pans, and I decided to try Jake's for dessert. Jake's is walking distance from the CG. Plenty of free parking in the municipal lot. Choices are almost endless, but we each had our old standby - deli mustard and sauerkraut. The dogs are Hebrew National. They are grilled, as are the buns. The owner mentioned that they are consistently voted the top hot dog in the area. We agree that they are excellent. Two reasons for the less than 5-star review. First, not cheap. Over $4 (w tax) for one dog. Second, our "foot long" dogs were probably about 8 inches. Now, Pots knows a lot about shrinkage, but no dog shrinks that much during cooking read more

But I won't be able to Jake around anymore :( My favorite Mochi store in New Haven was here (sob) and my favorite Hot Dog store too... they were both in the same location (sob sob) and they both vanished on me (sob sob sob). One minute I was heading over there, enjoying their products immensely as always, and the next minute they were gone and lost forever, like so many other great places. It's nothing short of a tragedy, and I mourn their loss and the great hot dogs they once served. F*** corporate America for making about 40% of my favourite locally owned restaurants, boba shops and snack places across America close down in the last 15 years. From the Mac dog to the Chicago to the New Yorker or build your own, I can't say enough positive things about the hot properly cooked dog and the luscious bun that cradles the dog and all of the toppings. A few small nets: slightly too much mustard on my New Yorker overpowered the sauerkraut and red onion sauce. Also, Jake's claims not to have indoor dining despite the presence of plenty of room, tables and chairs. It is not clear to me why Jake's does not have indoor dining and the absence of the indoor dining limits to take away or tiny tables outdoors. Everywhere else has outdoor dining. read more

Really nice guys handling the late-night crowd, bumping up my rating to a 2. However, the hot dogs were kind of gross. They were rubbery and wrinkly - maybe over done? - and the chili on the Tex was barely finishable. I scraped most of it off. It had a weird texture and not much flavor. Came here on a whim while passing through the area and the hot dogs were really good. The toppings are definitely a step above in terms of the amount of choices you get. We decided on the all American and the Mex. The relish was a little too sweet for my taste, but other than that, everything was great. Solid place to get a gourmet hotdog. Stopped in one day after work and ordered a chicken Philly dog with fries. Fries were nicely cooked, not over greasy and a generous portion for a small. Priced right. The hotdog was fantastic. Loaded with cheese and chicken, cooked perfectly with a nice crisp to some of the edges. One hotdog would make a meal and with fries I was more than full. Hotdogs are definitely quality, no filler garbage. The bun was fresh, no staleness to it at all. Service was fast, friendly, and had plenty of PPE in place for Covid. I was excited to try this place, which is a great addition to downtown Milford. Parking at the library is also a close option during peak hours. It is convenient for a late night meal or to take with for a stroll through the harbor. They also have ice cream from the Walnut Creamery, which is awesome. I had the American dog, and it was a great hot dog and a nice balance of toppings. They have some seating inside and a cute little outdoor patio in the back. The owner was super nice. The service was fast! We ordered ahead to pick up and the order was ready when we got there. The space inside itself is very cute and clean. The hot dogs we ordered were cooked to perfection, and the buns are soft. Toppings are plentiful! Person who served us was really kind and you could tell they took pride in the meal they made for us. Tried Jake's ice cream mochi for the first time today and it was DELICIOUS! Creamy, very flavorful (not just subtly flavored like some Yelp reviews have said). Gave it 4 and not 5 stars because it's a little expensive for what you get ($1.75 per mochi ball). I'm really surprised by the prior poor mochi reviews. Just don't be confused when you see the sign for Jake's on the outside; you're in the right place! They sell both hot dogs and mochi. (Google Maps was off by about 50 feet or so, but don't give up, walk a little further down Crown St. to find it.) I got the following flavors (listed here from my most to less favorite, though I would definitely recommend them ALL): passion fruit, green tea, pistachio, chocolate espresso, strawberry, chocolate peanut butter, and tiramisu. Next time I'm going to get more of the tropical fruit flavors because the passion fruit was incredible! Apparently this is a brand from Hawaii (so I'm not surprised they do tropical flavors well), and they're kept frozen in the store. About 1.5 inch in diameter each. I got them to-go (they were packaged in a nice clear plastic to-go container), drove 15 minutes home in my car, and they were ready to eat right away. Would probably thaw in just a couple minutes on a hot day, but it's winter right now! Can't wait to go back, especially this summer! read more

I applaud Jakes for offering a veggie dog. however, the price is preposterous. 6.95 for a veggie dog vs 3.95 for a regular is outrageous, and be warned that they will add 6.95 ON TOP of the charge for a regular combo dog. This made my order total over 19$ with small fries and a drink. I can buy a package of 5 veggie long dogs for around $4.20 retail. That's a profit for Jakes of over $5 per veggie dog... The food...the toppings were the best part of this meal. The dog was dried out to the point of almost being inedible. The bun is terrible. Tasted stale. Quick tip-veggie dogs are best boiled prior to grilling. The fries are the type covered in chemical coating, like a curly fry. Personally, I dislike this type of fry. Towards the end of a late night out with friends, we had a hankering for some late-night-food prior to heading home. We popped into Jake's Diggity Dogs for two southerner dogs and a chicago dog. We each enjoyed our hot dog and were pleased with our respective decisions. For those who agree that there is no such thing as too much of a good thing, I am pleased to tell you that I had a foot-long Hebrew National ("HeebNat") hot dog for lunch at the new Jake's Diggity Dogs here in lovely Milford CT. I had no idea that they were available this big. It was cooked perfectly, served on a toasted bun and the fries were, as requested, crisp. Topping choices range from basic to ludicrous. We took one dog home and re-heated it in the microwave. It was _juicy_. I never new that hot dogs could have juice. Could it be bottled? Nice people, fair prices, good service and easy parking. Eat indoors or al fresco, or take your food with you. The seafood on the menu is, alas, a mere preview of things to come. I'll definitely go back. read more

While listening to some Dead (01/02/1978, Uptown Theatre to be specific) Sugaree started filling the airwaves. A couple minutes into song, my alarm began to go off. My alarm is set accordingly, as a small reminder that roughly four hours and twenty minutes past noon my favorite time of the day would arrive and a celebration would be in order. I found myself having a hankering for some food, so I reached into my back pocket and pulled out my phone. Swiping right to left, I would eventually locate my Uber eats app. I opened the application and began searching through an endless variety of ethnic cuisines. Ten minutes later, after being sucked into the app veiwing menus. Jake's Diggity Dogs caught my eye. I thought man a hot dog sounds lit right now. Slowly sliding my finger up the face of the phone, searching for that perfect Hotdog, that one dog that fits where my vibe was at. Drool began to puddle around my tongue and fill my mouth to the point where I had to swallow as I imagined the wonderful flavors of Jake's scrumptious masterpiece of links, swimming in sauces topped with delicious condiments. While all this excitement was wonderful and everything, a little angel popped out on my shoulder (No I wasn't trippin') it's a metaphor. I remembered I can't eat bread as part of a certain diet I'm on. Now, I know what you're thinking. This guy must be crazy, he's on a diet and he's eating hot dogs what kind of diet that? Finally, I would decided on their VOLCANO DOG. It sounded absolutely tantalizing. Two Georgia hot links topped with Philly cheese steak!! Man! that is right up my alley. I Clicked that sh*t in my cart real quick like, then proceeded to order food for the rest of the fam. While ordering, it asked if I had any comments. What the heck, I began to type a little memo sayin', "Hey if you could do them without buns that would be great, if not no worries." Thirty seconds later, around "It Must Have Been The Roses" my phone began to vibrate in my back pocket, a NewHaven number. Nervousness began to enter my mind as perhaps my card was just declined or something. Nope, it was some gentleman at Jake's calling because he wanted to find out which dogs I wanted with buns and he would put the others in a bowl and wrap them. BONUS!! My Uber app then notified me that the order was being made. Food would arrive soon. Joy filling me as I danced to "Estimated Prophet" knowing that my VOLCANO DOG was going to hit the spot. Minutes Later, I received another notification on my Uber Eats. I believe this one was around "He's Gone". The notification read that the food was on its way and presented a map of my driver heading towards my home. This was a time for another celebration in the garage, carrying my Bose speaker out with me right around when "Drums" was playing and I stayed out there staring at my phone watching the driver get closer right through "Jam" and into the beginning "Wharf Rat" (I live a little distance from the restaurant). The driver pulled up and we chatted for a second or two, he handed me the bag and I thanked him. Starting to walk towards the house from the driveway. The driver yelled out his window and said hang on a second and proceeded to hand me another bag and then slowly navigated his way back out the driveway. Surely, off to his next delivery. I walked inside quickly Grabbing the Bose and making my way to the kitchen. Approaching the table I pulled out a styrofome box and opened it. I don't know if you have ever seen Raiders of The Lost Ark when the bad guys pull off the top of the ark and the glow is shining on their face or similarly in Pulp Fiction when Samuel L. Jackson shows Tim Roth Marsellus's soul in the diner (conspiracy theories be damned!). that's what it felt like as I opened the styrofoam lid. it was beautiful! Links cut up and topped with thin layers of Philly steak and cheese. this thing wasn't going to stay around for long and it didn't. Great job! You didn't disappoint. 5 stars for their MOCHI ICE CREAM. which is what I only come here for, so this review is just for that. Open till 3am Thurs-Sat which is great. The mochi itself is cheap - we got 4 for under $7.50. It's legit quality mochi ice cream, too. The green tea and red bean are just the right sweetness without too much cream and the REAL / NOT FAKE / GENUINE flavors. Sometimes the mochi can be SUPER frozen, so just give it 5-10 min for it to thaw and then get ready for heaven in your mouth. read more

This tiny hot dog joint (and Mochi ice cream) is quite small and contains a couple tables inside for seating. The foot-long hot dogs are large and can be topped with a lot of different extras. My only disappointment is that the hot dogs are not Hummel Bros brand. Jake's uses Hebrew National brand. Not only are Hummel hot dogs made right here in New Haven but they happen to be the absolute best hot dogs in the entire world. That's a bummer because the owner clearly prides himself on all-things New Haven (on the wall are Jim Morrison's arrest in the Elm City and also a Nighthawks Hockey sticker). Overall I give Jake's a thumbs up. My recommendation is to stick with a few toppings because adding lots of them can easily bump up the price. read more
