Had the Original Philly Cheesesteak sandwich the other night and, while it was good, it definitely didn't compare with the memory I had of the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich I had in Philly! Maybe it's unfair since it's been years since I had it in Philly, but I remember how delicious it was when I had it and Jake's just didn't measure up; I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to visit Jake's, but if I was in the neighborhood and was really hungry, I would probably stop by again. The guy at the counter was really accommodating and helpful in bringing water to the table, clearing the empty baskets, and bringing boxes for leftovers, so that's definitely a point in their favor. There were others at my table who ordered the mushroom cheese steak with spinach and one without the bun and both those looked really good. Another person ordered the cheesesteak salad. We came in tonight after the 49ers game. TVs are outside with different news wrap ups of the game but the volume was on. It's tvs. There were several flies circling on the sidewalk. But... The sandwiches were really good. I got the veggie and the cashier asked if I wanted garlic and spinach and yes, I did. We also had the original cheesesteak. Both filled and dense. Delicious. One of my favorite cheesesteak joints in the city! The owners are super friendly and always accommodating. They have a nice selection of beers and it's definitely a fun time when footballs on (if you're an eagles fan and you don't know about this place, you MUST check Jakes Steaks out!) They PACK their cheesesteaks with meat. My go to is the mushroom. I tried their cheesesteak eggroll and it instantly became a favorite (I believe it's currently a special - but if you see the sign up that they have it you gotta try it out) I came during an eagles game so the house was packed and it was really fun to experience the energy from all the fans. I've been defending this place to friends for years, but I'm going to stop doing that. Recently, I bought a Cheesesteak here and it simply was not good. I'm a Philly native and, when Jake Gillis opened the store over 20 years ago, I became one of the regular customers. In 2005, it was so good! In 2026, I'm sorry to have to say, it is far less so. The roll was a little stale and had been toasted slightly (possibly in an attempt to improve the stale taste); toasting the roll absolutely wrecked its texture. The meat was not seasoned very well. The cheese tasted like it had been somehow 'watered down' (maybe this was due to water in the peppers and can be forgiven). Altogether, sandwiches like this one must be why my friends had been saying they've stopped going to Jake's. I've kept going back, time and time again; some sandwiches were _good_, some were _okay_, but none of the cheesesteaks I've bought here left me as disappointed as this last one. In the future, I'll be going elsewhere. If I hear they've improved and are consistently good again, I'll be happy to return. This review was neither fun for me to write nor easy for me to post, but I felt compelled to share my experience. read more

Before the Eagles beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship game, SFGate published an article about this Philly sports bar on a residential side street of the Marina. My college friend and I knew we had to go there to watch the Super Bowl (though they have another location on Valencia.) We have a soft spot for Philly after going to college there. Jake's is a mood, a vibe, and makes you feel like visiting Philly. It's a slice of Philly in SF and I can't imagine a better place to watch the Super Bowl. People got there when they opened to get indoor seats, and at 11:30am for a 3:30pm game to get outdoor seating. Some people also brought their own fold-up sports chairs for the occasion. I've never seen so much Philly or Eagles gear in SF, and people came from all over the Bay Area to watch the game there. The current owner, Jr., now goes by Jake. He was the best host. They prepped green jello shots for the occasion and provided great beer like Liberty Ale. The indoor decor pays an homage to Philly sports, not just the Eagles. The inside wall includes a large image of the Schuylkill River. Of course, the cheesesteaks were perfect. My college friend said it's the best one he's had since leaving Philly.
