My friend won a free app party here, which was a fun experience. The appetizers were standard and pretty good - tater tots, fries, nachos, and quesadillas. The owner was friendly and handed out a few jello shots to the group. The music was good and the bar was fairly full and high-energy on a Saturday evening. read more

My fiancée and I live in the neighborhood and love going to Blue Light...until our last visit yesterday. We discovered it was trivia night on Thursdays and had so much fun we even texted other friends to join us next time! But when we got the bill, the bartender refused to let us pay with InKind (which they are contractually obligated to accept given their agreement with InKind). He told us the "machine was broken all week" but "he could've done it if he had known earlier." Those two facts don't make any sense since InKind doesn't require a machine as you simply enter the check number, you never have to tell places you're paying with it upfront, and we've used it there numerous times without issue. Also, something was been allegedly broken all week but also was working when we sat down?! To make matters worse, he applied an automatic 22% tip (which is aggressive for a restaurant and absurd for a bar!) and didn't mention it so we added our own tip. Sketchy, disappointing, and contract-breaching evening that marks our last time there. Sad to lose our neighborhood hangout! read more

It's been a while since I was a regular at the Blue Light, but I can tell that the charm is still in tact. Back in the early aughts, my buddy and I would partake in the taco Tuesday festivities with regularity. This was no gimmick, we'd actually be full after 3-4 tacos (and 3-4 drinks). I'm not sure who owns the place now, but the Owner Lance always looked out for / took care of us when we were there. The food is surprisingly good for dive bar, but given then competition in the neighborhood, anything to stand out is almost a necessity. I've tried nearly every item on the menu over the years and every item comes out perfectly to order. The service is great, and the long-time employees really get to know the regulars. If there were a real-life "Cheers" bar in the Marina, this is it. Whether you come with a group or solo, the place and the people are welcoming. Come on over to watch a sports match, play some pool or an after work cocktail, you'll be impressed! read more

We visited this bar on a Sunday evening, and the setting was clean and simple, with blue lighting everywhere of course. I loved that the place wasn't crowded when we came by. There are plenty of TVs throughout, good for watching sports. We got the ginger snap, mango margarita, and peach fuzz. But actually, they were out of some drinks on the menu, so the bartender made decent variations of these, no problem. History

Established in 1992.

Long before The Blue Light was a bar where you could air your dirty laundry, it was actually a Chinese laundry, doing just that! The laundry business was housed where the bar is now and the owners lived in the flat above, making it a very short commute to work. In its more recent past, the building was home to The Blue Light Café, a Texas cuisine restaurant opened by legendary R&B star, Boz Scaggs, in 1984. Boz also opened Slim's in 1988, which is still going strong. When the current owners purchased The Blue Light Café from Boz in 1991, they decided to have a naming contest, giving patrons the opportunity to vote on the new establishment's name. Oddly enough, the most votes were for "The Blue Light." After more than 20 years, the Blue Light remains a popular destination for locals and out-of-towners alike. Whether it's a casual cocktail, some appetizers and a ball game with buddies, or a delicious, affordable dinner, the Blue Light is always a great choice for a good time.

Meet the Business Owner: Johnny Love M.

Johnny Metheny, aka Johnny Love, opened a series of successful and legendary bars in California called Johnny Love’s. He is one of San Francisco’s best known bartenders and a seasoned expert on the night life scene. Metheny got his nickname, “Johnny Love”, while a freshman at the University of California, Berkeley. Metheny was inducted into The Bartender’s Hall of Fame by Bartender’s Magazine. In 2004, and took over Blue Light in 2017

The woman at the counter was really friendly. I used to work retail and dealing with customers, even at the start of the shift, can wear you down pretty quick. So I gotta give props to her for being positive during this very busy day. I got the crispy hot honey chicken tacos, which is one of this month's specials. It came with delicious sweet corn, cabbage slaw, chipotle mayo, and a cilantro-lime crema. It's basically the flavors of elote with fried chicken and it yummy! The breading on the chicken was even and crisp. And I enjoyed the spicy-sweet flavor of the honey, which complemented the chipotle mayo. I also enjoyed the crunch from the cabbage and the softness of the flour tortilla. I paired with it the fried Brussels sprouts to get another veggie into my meal. Though I do love very charred sprouts, there was a hint of bitterness. I may have needed more lime to cut that. The jalapeño mayo was good. But I think tossing it in pork fat is the way to go with Brussels sprouts to really pump up the flavor. I'm not sure what oil they fry it in. I think I'll stick to their sweet potato fries, which never disappoints. It's always busy there, but it's never too difficult to find a place to sit. It's shared seating, with long tables inside and large tables outside. But my friend and I took it to go so we can have dinner with the show. And the timing was perfect - we didn't wait too long to get our order and we arrived about 20mins before the band started. The quality of Gott's has been consistent over the years across their locations. So it's a tried and true place to get a delicious meal.

Once in the city we simply walk throughout Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf and into North Beach. The Buena Vista is an iconic spot dating back to the mid 1800's. It's great to pop in, have an Irish coffee, and enjoy the vibe. We got seated immediately at the bar. Service was great and everyone was enjoying futbol. San Francisco looks amazing! The Blue Light is one of a favorite spot in San Francisco and easily one of the best neighborhood bars and restaurants in the Marina/Cow Hollow area. There's always something going on and the atmosphere is fun every night of the week. The $1 oysters are an amazing deal and always fresh, and Taco Tuesday with $1.50 tacos is dangerous because it's impossible to stop at just a couple. The 50-cent Wing Wednesday special is another favorite. Trivia Thursday is always packed and a blast, and Music Bingo Friday keeps the energy going into the weekend. Add in great music every night and you end up staying way longer than you planned. The staff is friendly, drinks are strong, food is great, and it feels like one of those places where you walk in and immediately feel at home. If you're looking for one of the best bars in San Francisco for happy hour, sports, oysters, tacos, wings, trivia, and a great nightlife atmosphere, The Blue Light absolutely delivers. read more

Ok. I make fun of the marina as much as anyone else, which would cause one to wonder why I would ever go back to this place. I went to Taco Tuesday the first time unknowing of what it would be like. I have never gone back since without being dragged, drunk, or both. So last night we were celebrating my friends birthday at Butterfly (see review below), and she wanted to go out after, to Taco Tuesday because that was all we knew of besides the All-Star game. Oh, and supposedly Jay-Z is in town but we didn't know where he parties. So we go to Blue Light. UGH!!!!!! Overdressed girls that have staring problems. Lame ...just LAME ASS guys, who use pick up lines like this: "SO, are you gonna buy me a drink?"....I'm sorry why the HELL would I buy you a drink? Her response "what the fuck is your last name" .He happens to call her on her attitude and language and she ignores it and gives him a nasty look. My friend complained to the owner of the bar and some other guy,claiming to be the lawyer, comes at the side of the owner. Toy Soldier is a hidden gem in downtown San Francisco and one of the best places I've found for dinner and cocktails. The food and drinks were outstanding from beginning to end. The $1 oysters were fresh and an incredible value, especially for the quality. Their craft cocktails were some of the best I've had in the city, and the award-winning wine list had a huge selection with options for every taste. I love going to the Blue Light for Taco Tuesdays! You can't beat the dollar tacos and 2 dollar Coronas! The tacos are so yummy and I always order 3 of them. I love the chicken ones and the beef are great too. You can also get 2 dollar Red Stripes and Dos Equis if you want something other than a Corona but I always stick with mexican beer when I eat tacos! It does get packed on Tuesdays but that is all the fun. I live in the Marina so I always go with a group of my friends and start the night off right at the Blue Light. They also have a pool table in the back and if you like sports they are always showing the games on their many flat screens. You go on a Saturday, bet the board in college football, drink beer and have an awesome time. Could use a trough or more than one urinal but whatever. I usually love coming here, but lately the bar service has gone way downhill. The new bartender is painfully slow -- like, it's almost impressive how long it takes to make even the simplest drinks. It's frustrating to watch regulars wait forever for a beer while she fumbles through basic orders. At one point, there were only a few people at the bar, and it still took 15 minutes to get a round. To make it worse, it seems like the other bartenders are having to pick up her slack, which just creates tension and a bad vibe. Honestly, the service used to be quick and fun, now it just feels like everyone's babysitting. A lot of bartenders would have started pouring but the lovely lady working the bar informed us that there were $2 well drinks until 11 and asked if we wanted to order something covered by the special. Granted that turned my Jack & Diet into a Jim & Diet (gross...), and my friends Bacardi & Diet into a god knows what type of funky funky funky tasting rum & diet, but its the THOUGHT that counts! We came in for dinner around 6 PM and had such a great experience! The atmosphere was lively with fun music, nice service, and even the fight on the TVs. The food was absolutely amazing. We started with guacamole, salsas, and their homemade chips, so fresh and flavorful. We also tried the wild mushroom empanadas, chicken and al pastor tacos, and the quesabirria. I was simply waiting for my ride, which is the safest way to get home, and they were still trying to move people along. The service was terrible from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. I've never felt so unwelcome at a venue. I'd recommend avoiding this place and spending your money somewhere that treats customers with basic respect.

We chose to sit outside, and when my friend went in to order drinks, the bartender, despite a less-than-full bar, didn't acknowledge her for nearly 10 minutes. No greeting, no "I'll be right with you," nothing. Outside, a woman adjusting one of the planters caught my attention. I asked if she worked there, she confirmed she did, with a frown, and then walked away without offering to take my order or even asking if we needed anything. Pouty expression and all. The staff seemed genuinely miserable, as if every moment there was a burden. We were happy to finish our one drink and go. First visit, last visit. If you're looking for sullen service and a staff that seems to resent being at work, Macondray's delivers. Otherwise, keep walking.

it took me a while to write this because we are bay area locals and we have actually been coming…read morehere for years, but after our last experience it's safe to say we will never be back. while there, my partners drink was stolen and when he tried to talk to the guy who did it, in the process of standing up, he knocked over his chair. we had no prior alcohol in our system and sure my partner was loud(he has conductive hearing loss). instead of being helpful with the situation we ended up getting kicked out by some older white woman bar tender who seemed to be on a power trip. she didn't ask us what happened she didn't see if we needed help she just said "it's time for you to get out". she treated us horribly and tossed a drink at my partner and said "get out" again. maybe she was racist? maybe she was angry about her own life? maybe having a bad day? any way, it was no way to treat once-loyal customers. she was quite frankly very rude and i would never give my money to a place that treats me or anyone i love like that. do better hi dive before you fall off the deep end.

What originally started as a disappointment became a huge blessing once we found the board room. Feet aching, sweaty, and tired we made our way to this bar. Immediately you could tell it's a local favorite, the ambiance was nice and a great spot to people-watch. There was a cup flipping event which was super fun to spectate, along side the rotating pictures of the bar's beloved pooches . We ordered 2 western burgers, 12 count bone-in wings (half bbq, half Hawaiian), and an appetizer of corn dogs, tater tots, bacon Mac & cheese bites, and mozzarella sticks. Later we also added boneless buffalo wings which were so tangy, well-seasoned, and HOT. The western bacon burgers were so delicious, crispy bacon, crispy onion rings, and some bomb.com bbq sauce. The wings were drowned in sauce (just how we like them) , the bbq was to die for and the Hawaiian had the perfect little kick of spice for our picky eaters. The appetizer platter was also fried to perfection, with the perfect crunch on the tater tots & corn dogs. The Mac & cheese bites & mozzarella sticks were perfectly cheesed, with an amazing cheese pull on the mozzarella sticks. Along with the food, my boyfriend and I ordered some drinks. I got a margarita and he got a Guinness. Both drinks were good, very standard and well served. The couple behind the bar were very funny and super kind to us being dazed after all the walking. On our way back down to SoCal my brother is still raving about the burgers, this is a MUST-STOP the next time we come up to San Francisco!!

Great little bar in the FiDi, open late, and serves food late at night which is a huge plus. Even after a celebratory dinner, we couldn't resist getting the quesadilla here again - this place makes one of the best quesadillas I've had. Get it with guacamole, which they fold into the quesadilla. The drinks are good, and reasonably priced, especially for SF. Good selection of beers. When you walk in, you'll feel like you're on the deck of a ship - or like you've had a few too many - because the floor is slanted. Fun place, and draws in the local crowd. See you soon, Old Ship. You might think you've already had 7 to many when yoi walk in because years ago during some renovations the floor shifted and is uneven. Mr. Bartender was nice and the drinks were great. I think we shared a quesadilla. I love it when places serve food late at night. The rest of the food menu looked great with several items I'm looking forward to trying. More places need to serve food late at night. We originally thought this was our first time here but soon realized we have been here before multiple times. Prolly other late night stays in SF from when we were here daily. Prior to oir leaving the the bar got busy and multiple tables were filled. The really late night crowd had arrived, in mass. Nice to see after greasy newsom pretty much single handedly devastated the restaurant/bar scene in SF and elsewhere with his illegal draconian policies for a flu like illness that we all now know was delibrate on so many levels. But that's a different story for another time. Great to see this place survived. Like I said we've been here before but have only recalled it once we are in. No more. We talk about this place often and is on our radar to come back again and again.
