Had a great experience today. 2 Dozen $1 oysters Parmesan Fries 2 glasses Chardonnay World Cup fever today. Germany vs Ivory Coast. Several large screens TVs showing the game. But not too many guests. Still was a nice environment to chill and relax for a few. Fresh oysters about small- medium size Shucked and easy to slide into your mouth served with vinegar and basket of sauces Hot crispy fries with garlic Parmesan topping. Crisp outside tender inside and not excessively salty. Really good! Sign outside said $1 oysters Thursday to Sunday 5 pm to midnight. But the gentleman said they are serving $1 oysters all day and it was Saturday. So we lucked out and had a fantastic snack. Filbert Street does not have parking permits enforced on weekends so find parking on adjacent streets parallel to Union Street for free. Enjoy folks!! read more

Blue Light has become my Sunday spot. Come for football, stay because the place just gets it: good energy, no pretense, and bartenders who actually remember you. Dave and Dom run the bar like they've been doing it forever. A two man crew that makes you feel like you're a guest on their podcast. They're dog friendly, which means I get to bring my little guy along instead of leaving him home. Service is consistently great across the board. read more

TLDR: Beware SCAMS and UNDERAGE. We (20+ people) won an appetizer party at this bar hoping for a great time. When two of our friends went outside to get some fresh air, upon re-entry, the bouncer stole their ID's claiming they were fake (they were not fake...). He demanded $20 from our friends to get their IDs back AND to re-enter a party they were already attending!!! There was also NO LINE for context - this was a straight up scam. Even when we went outside to clear the situation up, letting the bouncer know that they were with us attending the free raffle party, AND that they were college-graduated of-age adults, the bouncer pretended that he did not remember where the ID was AFTER already taking the $20, and was extremely reluctant to give back our friends' LEGAL GOVERNMENT IDENTIFICATION (illegal btw) without even letting them back in. At that point, our friends did not even want to get back in, they just wanted their IDs back - but the bouncer remained shifty. To top it all off, during this whole interaction, we witnessed the bouncer accept $20 per person from a large group of underage people without saying a single word, and not checking any of their IDs. It seems this is not the first occurrence of this if there were no questions asked. Those kids showed up and knew exactly what was going on. Clearly, this must be a popular underage drinking spot. First, bartenders were very kind and drinks were delicious. Our group came here at 8 PM, and around 10 PM two of our friends (who are over 21) stepped outside for air. When they tried to walk back in, the bouncers took their perfectly valid, real government driver's licenses, claimed they were fake, and demanded a $20 cash bribe to get them back. While we were standing there trying to explain the IDs were real, we watched the bouncers openly accept cash from multiple groups of people who looked heavily underage (17-20) and let them straight into the bar without checking any IDs at all. We ended up paying the bouncers the $20 they demanded just to get our friends' property back, but they pocketed our money and STILL refused to give the IDs back. Our friends had to go home without their legal identification.This place is actively stealing people's legal property, extorting patrons, and taking bribes to let minors in. Do not trust the staff here. A formal report has been filed with the California Alcohol Beverage Control since this behavior from the bar is completely unsafe and unacceptable. read more

I would NOT recommend going here unless you want your ID and money stolen. The bouncers were unlawfully taking visitors' government IDs, lying and claiming the IDs were "fake" (even though they were real & each guest in the group was 23+), and rudely insisting that the visitors bribe them by paying $20 in cash to get the IDs back. The audacity of these bouncers was insane; they preyed on so many people in an illegal manner to make quick money for themselves. read more

It's been a while since I was a regular at the Blue Light, but I can tell that the charm is still in tact. Back in the early aughts, my buddy and I would partake in the taco Tuesday festivities with regularity. This was no gimmick, we'd actually be full after 3-4 tacos (and 3-4 drinks). I'm not sure who owns the place now, but the Owner Lance always looked out for / took care of us when we were there. The food is surprisingly good for dive bar, but given then competition in the neighborhood, anything to stand out is almost a necessity. I've tried nearly every item on the menu over the years and every item comes out perfectly to order. The service is great, and the long-time employees really get to know the regulars. If there were a real-life "Cheers" bar in the Marina, this is it. Whether you come with a group or solo, the place and the people are welcoming. Come on over to watch a sports match, play some pool or an after work cocktail, you'll be impressed! read more

We visited this bar on a Sunday evening, and the setting was clean and simple, with blue lighting everywhere of course. I loved that the place wasn't crowded when we came by. There are plenty of TVs throughout, good for watching sports. We got the ginger snap, mango margarita, and peach fuzz. But actually, they were out of some drinks on the menu, so the bartender made decent variations of these, no problem. We enjoyed our cocktails, and the friendly service by staff added to a positive experience overall. read more

History

Established in 1992.

Long before The Blue Light was a bar where you could air your dirty laundry, it was actually a Chinese laundry, doing just that! The laundry business was housed where the bar is now and the owners lived in the flat above, making it a very short commute to work. In its more recent past, the building was home to The Blue Light Café, a Texas cuisine restaurant opened by legendary R&B star, Boz Scaggs, in 1984. Boz also opened Slim's in 1988, which is still going strong. When the current owners purchased The Blue Light Café from Boz in 1991, they decided to have a naming contest, giving patrons the opportunity to vote on the new establishment's name. Oddly enough, the most votes were for "The Blue Light." After more than 20 years, the Blue Light remains a popular destination for locals and out-of-towners alike. Whether it's a casual cocktail, some appetizers and a ball game with buddies, or a delicious, affordable dinner, the Blue Light is always a great choice for a good time.

Meet the Business Owner: Johnny Love M.

Johnny Metheny, aka Johnny Love, opened a series of successful and legendary bars in California called Johnny Love’s. He is one of San Francisco’s best known bartenders and a seasoned expert on the night life scene. Metheny got his nickname, “Johnny Love”, while a freshman at the University of California, Berkeley. Metheny was inducted into The Bartender’s Hall of Fame by Bartender’s Magazine. In 2004, and took over Blue Light in 2017

Meat choices listed on the menu: * Al Pastor - Marinated Pork * Carnitas - Deep Fried Pork * Chile Verde - Pork Green Sauce * Chorizo - Mexican Sausage * Carne Asada - Steak * Lengua - Beef Tongue * Pollo - Chicken * Cabeza - Beef Head * Tripas - Intestines I asked the cashier which meat was most popular, and he recommended the beef steak, which had a slight hint of spiciness. The burrito came with pinto beans and rice. I forgot to ask if I could substitute black beans. The burrito wasn't too salty, and the beef steak was just okay. I also think the $10.25 Carne Asada burrito is a good deal. At other taquerias, carne asada is often an additional charge or the burrito costs more when you choose steak. I usually ask for a receipt even when paying cash. When I checked my receipt, I noticed I was charged an additional $0.25 for "Bolsa To Go" (bag) even though I was dining in and didn't receive a to-go bag. It's not about the $0.25, but I think it's important for a business to have integrity and charge customers only for what they actually receive. I hope this isn't something being charged to other dine-in customers as well. Overall, I would come back to try a different meat, but next time I'll make sure to clearly say dine-in and check my receipt to make sure I wasn't charged for a to-go bag.

The 50-cent Wing Wednesday special is another favorite. Trivia Thursday is always packed and a blast, and Music Bingo Friday keeps the energy going into the weekend. I love going to the Blue Light for Taco Tuesdays! You can't beat the dollar tacos and 2 dollar Coronas! The tacos are so yummy and I always order 3 of them. I love the chicken ones and the beef are great too. You can also get 2 dollar Red Stripes and Dos Equis if you want something other than a Corona but I always stick with mexican beer when I eat tacos! It does get packed on Tuesdays but that is all the fun. I live in the Marina so I always go with a group of my friends and start the night off right at the Blue Light. They also have a pool table in the back and if you like sports they are always showing the games on their many flat screens. I usually love coming here, but lately the bar service has gone way downhill. The new bartender is painfully slow -- like, it's almost impressive how long it takes to make even the simplest drinks. It's frustrating to watch regulars wait forever for a beer while she fumbles through basic orders. At one point, there were only a few people at the bar, and it still took 15 minutes to get a round. To make it worse, it seems like the other bartenders are having to pick up her slack, which just creates tension and a bad vibe. Honestly, the service used to be quick and fun, now it just feels like everyone's babysitting. We came in for dinner around 6 PM and had such a great experience! The atmosphere was lively with fun music, nice service, and even the fight on the TVs. The food was absolutely amazing. Maybe if the buns had been warmed a bit, it would have helped. The onion rings weren't bad, a bit crunchy, more so than your average beer battered onion ring, but I suppose I would have to try them again to really say if I like them or not. I know it was early and it was a bar setting, but having to sit, not be given a menu, had to grab from a different table along the wall, go up and order, didn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just how the bar is? Not sure as I've never been. The bartender that took my order was nice and friendly. Decent place to watch a game? Sure, looking for a lunch spot for a quick bite? Probably not.

It was a nice day out so it was lovely to sit on their patio but the views of the water are more blocked out there than other spots in a similar location. Our waitress was friendly, but food was out quite slow for the amount of people. However, it was a Tuesday afternoon, and it seemed like there was only one wait staff, so possible minimal staffing at the time. Probably would get busy during game day. I had the blta sandwich with fries and it was decent. Bacon was cooked well, though a bit tough. Bread was sourdough and nicely toasted, and everything came together as expected. Fries were okay, I liked the addition of old bay or similar spice used but there was not enough. Salmon burger also seemed a bit skimpy on the salmon, probably only enough for half of the sandwich they give you. Prices felt high for the overall quality and portion sizes, but given the area and location, it's to be partially expected.

I knew I wanted a beer, while my wife took a look at the menu and ended up ordering the Berry Brixton. I went with a Space Dust--super happy to see it back! Last time we came after they re-opened, they didn't have it and the beer selection leaned lighter, so this was a nice surprise. We also ordered the house-made mozzarella sticks and I forgot how massive they are. Definitely worth it, especially since they come with both ranch and marinara for dipping. Service at the bar was awesome! The best part? When the check came, we realized both the beers and mozzarella sticks were on happy hour. Even better.

It's also a cool destination for friends visiting from out of town. It's hard to pass up hanging out at the oldest bar in San Francisco, made partially from parts of a shipwreck! It has that classic, old-timey neighborhood bar feel without feeling overly touristy. The staff is always so nice and welcoming! The drinks are great (I think I've had most of the cocktail menu at this point), and the food is delicious. My favorite cocktail would have to be the Pimm's Cup, though it's hard to choose just one. Food-wise, we've had the burger (mine with a Beyond patty), the patty melt, chicken mole nachos, quesadilla, chili, clam chowder, and mac & cheese--can you tell we come here a lot? I haven't personally tried the meats, but the mole sauce on the chicken mole nachos is delicious, almost as good as the mole my parents make. The burger is so good and is my usual go-to, with sweet potato fries. I'd say we've tried a good majority of the menu at this point, and we've never been disappointed. I highly recommend it for a chill night with friends or to watch a game. There's also a small outdoor area that's great if you're looking for a quieter evening. Great little bar in the FiDi, open late, and serves food late at night which is a huge plus. Even after a celebratory dinner, we couldn't resist getting the quesadilla here again - this place makes one of the best quesadillas I've had. Get it with guacamole, which they fold into the quesadilla. The drinks are good, and reasonably priced, especially for SF. Good selection of beers. When you walk in, you'll feel like you're on the deck of a ship - or like you've had a few too many - because the floor is slanted. Fun place, and draws in the local crowd. See you soon, Old Ship.
