The service was good but the food was poor. The chips they brought were cold and greasy. When we asked for fresh ones they weren't any better. My girlfriend ordered shrimp quesadillas and they were cold. She sent them back and they returned only slightly warmer. It was as though they'd been put under the warmer for a few minutes instead of being made fresh. I ordered a chimichanga and it was soggy instead of crisp. It was a busy night but that was no excuse. So disappointed! As hostess was seating us we asked to be seated away from an occupied table. She did a sigh with an eye roll and informed us that they do 100% seating capacity. My mother and I went to a restaurant for the first time yesterday. While the food was average for Mexican Cusine, the service was poor. The waitress came once, gave everyone water and 3 servings of chips and salsa. She came back only once to serve the food when the table was full of dirty dishes. She never came back. After we were done with our food, we asked for her twice and waited for another 30 for her to return. When we asked to speak with the manager, he told us that he could only offer a margarita or dessert which we could not have either ( fasting with the church). We calmly declined and he threw the bill on the table and left. My mother, age 65, asked to speak with him again, and he repeatedly said that were trying to get free food. The bill was only $42.00, btw. He would not listen and after 20 minutes, he offered to call the police. When we said we would wait, he came back and gave $10.00 off. When my sister called back the next day, he called her a BLACK BITCH. This establishment is run by a racist manager. BE AWARE. read more

If you like Mexican food, this is not for you. Service bad, food not good. 9pm on a Saturday. When being walked to a booth, the hostess stopped to talk to a waiter for a minute or two while we stood behind. I asked for a table instead, the first chair I pulled out was broken. The salsa was flavorless, no heat. Ordered guacomole, seemed to be just whipped avocado. No onion, no garlic, no cilantro, no lime...just bland. Asked for water 3 times before getting it, asked for hotter salsa twice. I ordered a steak burrito dinner, my friend had pork sopes. The burrito had unseasoned steak in a tortilla..... nothing else. No sauted tomato and onion, no lettuce, beans, sauce...no nothing. Just meat and a tortilla with 2 squares of some kind of white cheese melted on top. I took about 3 bites and cut the other end to look for other ingriedients. There were none. No mas! The refried beans seemed canned and the rice was ... just ok. My friend liked the sopes. I tried one and it was ok. Even when seeing my plate hardly touched, the waiter didn't ask if everything was ok. As we walked out we remembered saying "never again" the last time we were there years ago. I'll remember " never again". One of my boiz hits me up! and asked me if I had plans for that one Friday night, I replayed and said no I'm free. He was o.k. you're partying with us, so I asked him "where we are going, what's the name of the place and the address". He replayed "I'll give you details later" "I was like hmm". It was about 10p.m when my friends and I met up at one of my other boi'z crib, to ride off to the place. So he finally tells us that we are going to party at this one place in Indiana, I was like wait! There isn't much of Nightlife in Indiana, but, it's all good. We finally arrive to the highly anticipated hot-spot! Known as Jalapeno's, aka "Wood hallows"... A couple of friends and I was like wtf! Is this place even popping? We approached the front entrance, all of my friends had been carded and most of them had paid the cover fee. I on the other hand, rushed back to one of the cars to drop off some stuff; therefore I was the last one to go in. When I was carded, I was informed by one of the bouncers that my I.D wasn't valid. To make matters worse this other bouncer tells me "Yup! And by the way your jeans are too long/sagging." I was like dude wtf! Are you freaking serious, I'm like wearing skinny ass jeans with some DC* skateboarding shoes; he replays "Nope! I'm Sorry." (They were also denying entrance to other people for stupid-ass reasons) I was like Aite! Man whatever. After the whole bogus incident, most of my friends stood in the place. A couple of them asked for their money back and went back to Chicago with me even thought they didn't have to. There are tons of great places in this town but, this one definitely blows!! Yeah I have to admit that the place looked like it was popping, but what is there to expect from people who possibly can't make it out to Chicago's Nightlife, and from a town in Northwest Indiana that is basically lacking from a Nightlife. Wow. All these negative reviews are ridiculous. Unless something changed in the past 3 or 4 months since my last visit, this place has always been great. No, the staff usually isn't out-of-their-way perky, and you shouldn't expect to find an amazing Mexican atmosphere... But the food is AH-MAZING. As long as my waiter or waitress isn't being an ass, I could care less about their role in my social experience. I'm here to DINE. And when I have my rare restaurant and calorie-laden splurges, I couldn't care less about anything other than the food. The only time I was ever disappointed in anything of theirs was when I tried their crab patties (an appetizer I made into a dinner)... Those were definitely a bust, but everything else I have had was super! The seafood enchiladas are YUMMY!!!! Probably my favorite thing there. Having been born and raised in Texas, I was very upset to leave my favorite Tex Mex restaurants behind when I moved up north. I tried a couple of local places around me, but apparently most of you yankees think MORE GREASE = Mexican, and I have been served way too many of these BLAND, greasy Mexican dishes around here. They have an awesome selection and variety outside the norm, too, which is good when you're a pescatarian like me and don't want everything stuffed with beef and chicken. So I can't give you a review of anything containing the latter two, but my experiences with their seafood entrees have been fabulous. Also, ignore the previous reviewer on the spinach dip, too. You don't skip that at all. Aside from their guacamole, which is absolutely STELLAR during avocado season, I live for this as an appetizer. It isn't the BEST spinach dip I have ever had, but it's worth a taste for the traveling spinach dip lover like myself. Their margaritas are great, though definitely not perfect. I love their variety of mixes, but I think their house is the best that I have had so far. They have a Margarita night where they are discounted, but I can't remember what night of the week it is. They often have awesome local musicians come through, too, which is great as well. It seems some of these bad reviews are commenting on their nightlife, but last time I checked this place had 'Restaurant' in its name, and nothing resembling 'club'. She said "I brought you what you wanted" really rudely. I told her that i was not aware if we didnt beg for a plate....we just dont get one??? She then justified her unattentiveness by saying " we ARE SHORT STAFFED... I AM RUNNING AROUND EVERYWHERE" She has 2 tables and we only saw her to bring cold food. My good luck with Groupon continues. I was staying the night with The Sibling, who is a NW Indiana resident. We were hungry. And thirsty. Especially thirsty. Sibling said, wait a minute, i think I have a groupon or two! And she did. We first looked at Yelp to see if we even wanted to use the groupon to Jalapeno's. Your reviews, fellow Yelpers, were all over the place. We pondered. We looked at the calendar - yep, it was Sunday; most restaurants aren't slammed on Sundays. We looked at the weather report; cloudy, warm, but no rain in the forecast. Sibling said, you know, i think Jalapeno's has an outdoor patio. We decided - it would be Mexican food and drinks. Jalapeno's is located in a shopping mall area - quelle surprise, this is NW indiana. Parking is definitely not an issue here. Though the lot looked very full when we first approached, there were plenty of spots close to the front door. Jalapeno's has a diverse audience in terms of age, but not so much in terms of race. Maybe it was only during our single visit, but it was a very white clientele. No Hispanic people. In NW Indiana, and at a Mexican restaurant, that's odd. That can be a bad sign. But having a Groupon means you throw caution and your better instincts in the toilet. The restaurant was about half full. We asked if there were tables available outside, and we were promptly escorted to a two-top around a corner, which actually gave us some privacy for our conversation. We had a waitress named Naomi, who was prompt and efficient throughout our entire visit. A busboy came quickly and gave us chips and salsa, and he kept our water glasses full. Other people may have had issues with service, but we did not. The Sibling had a glass of sangria, and I ordered a laguna Margarita. This means that it was made with blue curacao. We each had the mid-size, which was as big as my head. The Sibling was driving, so she was conservative with her drinking. Me, I sucked that baby down, and even ordered a smaller, second laguna Margarita. We both liked our drinks. The Sibling and I were going vegetarian. She ordered vegetarian enchiladas with spinach, and I ordered enchiladas stuffed with cheese, covered in a green sauce. Both entrees came with refried beans and rice. We both enjoyed our meals very much, and took half of them home for the next day. Mine still tasted good Monday evening. The portions are very large. The menu is huge and kind of disorganized. I found it a little hard to read, and that was before I had dived into my margarita. I don't think Jalapeno's has outstanding food - it has satisfactory food. This is not a gourmet experience, but I don't believe it is intended to be. It is shopping-mall Mexican food, made for a white audience who has probably dulled its taste buds with ginormous alcoholic beverages before eating. If you are expecting Topolobampo in Schererville, you will be sadly disappointed. If you want to have some strong drinks, fill up with decent food, and relax away the evening, then this may be the place for you. For me, I got what i expected. That's good enough for me. read more

We went there for my uncle bday and were pleasantly surprised because many of the reviews were bad. However we had good food and great drinks and great service. My husband ordered the mojo de ajo shrimp which was very good. I had the Strack and chicken dinner also well done. The margarita was good too. Sadly we didn't order appetizers so I can't really comment on that. I would go back though and try. I heard the guacamole was good. read more

Waiter was great in the restaurant, my husband had the Monterey special and most was good. Chicken was dry. I had the child rellenos and it was horrible. It was very watery and rice was not a typical Mexican rice. Went to the bar after since they were doing karaoke so thought we would check it out. Bartender was an older blonde and cleared the plates right in front of us at the bar and said I'll be right with you. She then preceded to talk to some gentlemen at the bar and go serve a young lady standing at the bar. After she was done she served the lady behind her, now the problem with that was the girl she served after was the lady that was singing while we sat down. Ok we still waited and she continued to serve another customer and ignoring us all together. I've been coming here for years and the food is consistantly great. It's honestly my favorite mexican restaurant. I ask for felipe whenever he is available. You can tell he genuinely cares and his lengthy tenure is testament to the quality of the product. Prices have stayed affordable despite everything affecting the restaurant industry. I walked in at 3pm and asked if one of the two televisions above the bar could be turned to Jeopardy. She said "No. They are only for sports. " Huh? So I said "Not even for half an hour? " So she sighs, walks around the bar, fools around with the remote and informs me that it starts at 330p. Duh, like I don't watch it every day. At 325p I asked the (nice) bartender on duty to change the channel. She tells me that only The Manager (evil bartender) can change it and she's on the phone. At 335p (after I asked twice more)the #itch walks out and changes it. We ordered one Jamo rocks, the Margarita special, a Guiness and Guacamole. The Guiness was stale. The Margarita was weak. My friends and I come here every week for the $3 margaritas either Wednesday/Thursday, and I've been disappointed every time. The margaritas are very inconsistent in their taste/flavor/amount of alcohol because they keep it in a pitcher for the frozen ones and blend it per order. Can you all please update your open-close times to be consistent? Your Facebook page differs than your Yelp page and online Google search as well. Showed up last night (Friday) a little bit before 10pm since online says you all close at 11 and the doors were locked. At least 7 customers and a whole family were waiting outside thinking your front door was broken. I called and the rude hostess let us know you all close at 10pm. How are good paying customers supposed to know when you all close if every website of yours says something different? Please at least post a sign on your door with your correct hours or update all of your information correctly. I've been a customer of Jalapeños for over 7 years and the way you all handled business leaving customers clueless was very unprofessional. I have drove past this place so many time but never stopped in. I decided to meet a couple of my classmates for lunch and we had a wonderful time at the bar. I had wine and they had margaritas which they said was excellent. The tacos dinner and hot wings were great!! I have been back 2 more time and The bar service is excellent, I have never had a Long Island made to taste like my own until now! I'm not quite certain as to what is going on in this establishment? Last week I had a group of my usual mom friends meet at Jalapenos . It was Thursday night and had happened to be Halloween . All of our children are High school aged and we were planning our next fundraiser. We decided on a table at the bar as we knew we would be conversing after dinner. We arrived at around 8 the bar area was not full but had customers. Our server was also the bartender. So we waited a bit to be greeted , but when we did he was polite etc and introduced himself as Matt. Fast forward to after ordering our food and as it arrived there were a few inconsistency in our order. Matt was less than thrilled to oblige, but he did have the corrected. He stated that it was the food runners error, although I'm Not sure why the food runner would have put chicken in my tacos in lieu of steak, but I digress. After that we were basically ignored. Our drinks were empty and we actually had to ask another server from the front area for more water. She said she would find the bartender to make us more drinks. When he arrived it was clear to us what he was doing on his siesta from the bar. He reeked of marijuana. No wonder he messed up our order and was ignoring us. He did bring our drinks but again we were ignored after that. Dirty plates etc. he seemed to be giving his attention to certain bar patrons etc. when we asked the waitress a second time for assistance she apologized and suggested we say something to the manager. When she pointed out who the manager was it all became clear to me why this restaurant is run the way it is and this service is seemingly acceptable. The "CUSTOMER" at the bar was actually the supposed general manager... mind you he wasn't there the entire time but when our table was needing assistance he was doing shots with the bartender, and MIA along with the bartender. When both of them returned we asked for another round of drinks. We were informed that last call had been called and we needed to pay. After overhearing his comments to another table, he had a party to attend and needed to leave. At this time it was 945 on a Thursday. The website says they are open until 11. I called 3 times to speak with the owner as I clearly would fall on deaf ears if I called and spoke with Jim The general manager. Elsalto and lacaretta are in close proximity to all of our homes, they will now get our business. It's now been a week with no phone all from anyone. Jalapeños has clearly seen it's hay day.. and what from what I can see it's become a haven for slovenly dressed managers with obvious drug problems. read more

Meh at best. Salsa is the best around though. That's about all it has going for it. The steak is nauseating with every other bite being fatty chunks. The beef for tacos is a runny mess with no flavor. Shredded chicken is about the same as the beef. You're better off getting veggie tacos. Just not that great. read more
