Where do I start? EVERYTHING could be improved. My burrito was the WORST burrito that I've ever had in my life! The shredded chicken that was used was awful AND the burrito stuck to the plate so I had to tear it up in order to eat it! They insisted that it was the cheese that made it stick. NOT! And that was just MY ORDER! They brought my young cousin a cup of water and claimed that it Sprite....which we paid for! Had a good experience on Saturday. Stopped in for lunch. Looks like decent spot for Mexican food in Highland. Had tacos plate that came with rice and beans. The chips and salsa here is amazing. Really enjoyed the spicy kick coming from the salsa. Service was great. Our waitress was attentive and we got our food very fast. The restaurant has a large bar and dinning area. The atmosphere of this restaurant is vibrant. Plenty of seating, including large bar area to sit and also a serve yourself draft area. This is my second time making a stop here. My first visit was not a good one, slow service, just okay food and out of main staple items like sour cream. We gave this another shot during lunch. Service was quick and friendly. The menu is large with a lot of great options to choose from. Chips and salsas come to your table, which was very good. Salsa has some nice heat to it. We ordered the three tacos which also came with rice and beans. The tacos we got was steak, chicken and pork. Everything came out nicely, food was good. Nothing super stood out about those tacos, but they were good. Those refried beans though are absolutely delicious. They had like the smoky taste to them. They were very, very good. Something to know if you pay with cash, you will receive a 3.9% discount. If you pay with your credit card, you will be charged that 3.9%. Just something to keep in mind. Overall, this restaurant is in a great spot we had a good experience. It has some incredible potential. Just more consistency with food that's coming out. Not being out of stable items. Horrible service, everything was piece work. 3 people asked for water, brought one water and the other 2 20 min apart. Asked for salsa with chips, salsa came out 20 min after chips. Ordered three cups of corn. Only brought out 2 and the 3rd came after all our food was done. Ordered steak enchiladas came out chicken and was completely inept that I didn't want chicken. Horrible. Food was ok. Than they got nerve to add their own tip for crap service. 3 meals had to sit forever. Go to asada they are competent. I was just there having dinner. Me and my boyfriend ordered the parrillada for 2 and ordered extra tortillas, the waitress came back and asked if we wanted 6 extra tortillas we said yes, when we got the bill they charged $18 dollars extra for the 6 tortillas. I asked the waitress why so much, she said they charged 3 dollars extra per tortilla. When I pointed out that a dozen goes for 50 cents at any store she said we don't get them from the store, we get them from a restaurant. I still think 18 dollars for 6 extra tortillas is an excessive amount of money. We won't be going back. read more

Seriously the best al pastor tacos I've ever had! My friend and her husband hosted their rehearsal dinner here and it was soo good. They had us set up in a back room that fit about 15 of us perfectly. The staff were super friendly and we got our drinks and food quickly. To drink, I had the cenote maya which was a frozen margarita mixed with frozen sangria. To eat, I did the a la carte tacos. 1 each of the Al pastor, asada, and a carne de res. Everything was delicious. It's probably a good thing I don't live near here, I'd never stop eating tacos. For about $30 you can embarrass your friends celebrating their birthday or special event. They came out with cake and sparklers and signing and dancing. They were hilarious. You can also get a bunch of shots in lieu of cake. The general vibe was awesome. We had a lovely meal with incredible service at Riviera Maya, and we would absolutely recommend you try it! I LOVE tacos - who doesn't? It's really hard to go wrong with tacos, but it's challenging to get them very right. I loved their Al Pastor and Asada tacos. The salsa and guac tasted fresh and flavorful. Stopped by after work last night since it was next door to my place. Inside, the place is very festive with the Mexican decor and lights. They flashed the specials through out the week on one of the tvs. Along the far wall is the pour your own beer station. You basically try any beer you want and pay by the ounce. Place was not too crowded when I went around 7pm. Drink: Watermelon moijtos. They were very refreshing and delicious. Appetizer: chips and salsa. Chips were warm, crispy, and addicting. Both were delicious. The salsa was not spicy. I asked the server for spicy salsa and they gave me a small bowl. Entree: Camerones Riveria (shrimp tacos). It's 3 tacos that come with Guajillo Chipotle Aioli and Cabbage. I made it a dinner with comes with rice and refried beans. The tacos were so good and flavorful! I could have eaten 3 more! My server was very nice. While she had multiple tables to look after, she made she everyone had what they needed and kept checking in on all of us. Overall, everything was excellent! My review is geared toward the Merrillville location. Horrible service, incorrect ordering, incredibly long wait times (we got here before the crowd). My girlfriend asked 4 different people for a water before she was brought one. It's Cinco de Mayo and the staff is completely clueless. Inexcusable. Won't be back. Food is very mediocre. Salsa is literally V8 tomato juice. Queso pretty good. Tacos average. Rice 100% comes from a frozen bag and I'll put money on that--disgusting. This was my first time at this restaurant, and I am always open to trying a New Mexican restaurant. To me, this place was a diamond in the rough; however, it's right in plain view (I just didn't look hard enough). It was a group of eleven of us who went to eat, and they have the capacity for large groups. There were two other large groups in the restaurant, and they have a separate room for a large party. I always judge a Mexican restaurant off of its chips and salsa, and they are on point. So I believe they make the chips fresh because when they brought them out, they were piping hot. The salsa was chunky, spicy and so flavorful. I did Not have to add a pinch of salt! I ordered steak tacos on flour tortillas with double rice on the side. When my tacos came out there was an abundance of steak on it, that it was coming out of the tacos. My tacos were not piping hot, but they were warm enough. The steak was seasoned very well, nothing had to be added. The rice was good, but I was thrown off a little. So I ordered double rice, but I got two different types of rice. My first bowl was very good and flavorful, but the second bowl looked and tasted different. That was so odd to me, but it's ok because everything else was good. I would definitely eat at this restaurant again. However. I would not come with a large group because I think my tacos would have been hotter if our group had not been so big. read more

First time I had a horrible experience, the manager was very rude!! I decided to go a second time and my food was great. So tonight I decided to ask my hubby to try again. Our server Shantell, I believe is her name, is the highlight of my friend and I's experience here. I've never been to Highland, IN and we decided to get dinner here since it's around the corner from her house. Neither one of us have been here before, the menu looked appetizing, and they make it easy to book a reservation via OpenTable. It wasn't as busy today around 6, so our food came out pretty quickly. I'll have to say I've had better Mexican cuisine before. Everything is just okay for me, the chips felt like they were drenched in oil -- the first few bites of the chips were crispy initially and by the time our main course came out the chips tasted out and you really had to fight it for it to come apart in your mouth. The salsa is delicious, it's too bad the chips weren't good. For my entree, I ordered two carne asada tacos and I appreciate our server asking me what kind of tortillas and what style -- I went with corn tortillas and Mexican style. I was telling my friend that the corn tortillas tasted weird like corn meal / grainy, so I ended up just eating the filling since the lime wedges they gave me where really fresh and juicy, and I loved how it complemented the steak, onion and cilantro. I went with our server's recommendation on the frozen margarita with guava flavor -- it was some of the best I've ever had, and it came in a big martini glass. I think she said there's a special every Tuesday and Thursday. Other than that, I did have a good time here and would totally be back for just the drinks and a good time with friends. I don't know if I'll order the food here again. My friend ordered the Cochinita pibil, and she couldn't finish her food. She ended up taking her leftovers home. They have plenty of free parking here, with plenty of chairs and tables for dining in, and there's also screens where you can watch a game etc. The bar area is also one of the first things you see when walking in. CHECK YOUR BILL BEFORE YOU PAY!!! Me and a friend decided to try this place out Tuesday evening. The sign written in chalk at the door said $6 margaritas. We asked to sit outside since it was still beautiful out. They said no because it was dirty due to planting, so we sat at the bar. It wasn't busy at all. There was one guy at the bar, and customers at maybe 3 tables in the dining area. I ask right away how much margaritas are. The woman behind the bar said $8. I decide on the frozen sangria, my friend ordered a pineapple margarita on the rocks. Mine was good, but hers arrived frozen. She liked it, so she didn't ask for a correction. The woman brings us chips and salsa and water. We order our food. My friend orders lamb tacos on corn tortillas. I order steak tacos on corn tortillas. When our food arrives, mine looks fine, but my friends is on flour tortillas. She didn't touch her food, she just waited for the woman to come back so that she could request some corn tortillas. This takes a few minutes after the woman types in the order on her little machine. As I'm eating, I try the green sauce that came with my tacos. I didn't like it so I used the salsa from our chips, which was much better. I asked for more. The woman said there was a charge. I said ok. After my friend re-made her own tacos with the corn tortillas, she began eating. She said they were good; until she pulled a rather large bone of some sort out of her mouth. She didn't want to complain. The woman never asked if we wanted another water or drink. So we finished up and was handed our bill. It seemed high, so we checked to make sure everything was right. The woman had charged us for a strawberry margarita that we didn't order and $3 for corn tortillas that they messed up in the first place! My friend explained that we didn't order an additional margarita, and that she originally ordered her tacos with corn tortillas and that she shouldn't have to pay extra for their mistake. Then the woman said, "Oh. I didn't charge for the salsa, so I'll add that on." As if getting free salsa would make the extra $12 charge acceptable! She corrected the check and added $1.50 on for the salsa. Needless to say, since she's making plenty of money from her shady practice, we did not leave a tip, and we are usually pretty generous tippers. On top of all that, as we were leaving the parking lot, we saw the marquee flash "Tuesdays $6 Margaritas". Annoyed as hell, I tried to call, but there was only a busy signal. read more

Service was super slow plagued with a lot of missing items not making to our table and having to reorder three times cause they ran out of an item. Service was terrible as we had to go find someone to ask for something or mention that some of us in the party never got our food. Not a single time checking in on us or asking if we need another drink. The icing on the cake is to have an automatic gratuity for such poor food/service. What a waste of a Friday evening and money. Stopped in on a Sunday and first thought they were closed but upon further inspection they were just empty. We sat at the bar and we were the only ones at it. Ordered some drinks and I found it odd they only have one size for margaritas or at least I wasn't told about a larger size. Drinks were on the expensive side for what you got. The tacos were good. The rice was excellent. The bar is fairly large. The place was clean but there are tons of options in the area to try. Not sure we would go back. Nothing stood out as a differentiator. read more

Yes you can order, the prices are already higher which is normal BUT.. they try to whack you with a 6$ upcharge paid to THEM not the driver to order delivery.. Dashpass and GrubPass not allowed. We we're going to order over 50$ worth of food and then you want to add $6.00 to stick in your pocket ?? That's on top of charging 20% more on the site to begin with..SMH. So no.. we did not use you and now we probably won't ever visit because if your that greedy for delivery business then God knows what you do in person. read more

This is my first time here. This place was recommended by my cousin Rachel. I took my male friend of 17 years here to celebrate our 17th year friendship. Great choice because he loves this style of food. It opens at 3pm and it gets crowded FAST! They had one server and she skipped me and my companion . We were there before the people whose order she took. The make up was I spotted Brenden . He was the bar server, but this man is AWESOME! I explained what transpired and he was such a great sport! I love him for that! He took our order without writing anything down. Such great service and a good memory from him I tipped him well. Our food came out before the server who skipped over us. We came here about 2 years ago and it was great. Fast forward to now. We got Riviera Maya gift cards from Costco that you can only use at Riviera Maya so we decided to make another visit here. When we got there around 6:30 on a Thursday evening, there were barely any people in the restaurant. That should've been our first clue. Then we are told it will be a 15 minute wait for some reason even though there is NO ONE there! We finally get seated. It takes like 10 minutes for anybody to acknowledge us. They have a flashing sign advertising 1/2 off the beer wall Tue-Thur so we ask for that- and then the beer wall is not even working. Cool. Here comes the cherry on the top- we get the bill and I start to hand over 2 of the gift cards and am told that they no longer take gift cards. Um, excuse me? What kind of stupid nonsense is this. I spent $100 on gift cards that I can never use. Awesome. Apparently they changed ownership and these new owners should be ashamed of themselves. Never coming here again. There is another location in Merrillville and they do not take their own gift cards either! Grrr!! read more

Wanted to sit outside on their new patio and pour some beers off their PYO beer wall. Hostess told us the patio was closed (it was 8:30). Also mentioned the kitchen was closing in a few minutes. No problem, we'll sit inside and still try a few beers. Hostess says the beer wall isn't working. Became quite clear that the staff was uninterested in our business. No big loss. I have been driving past Riviera Maya for a long time and decided to try it out after my usual popular Mexican restaurant on Ridge Rd in Munster hired some rude waitresses with a bad attitude problem. Well, Riviera Maya was the complete opposite and immediately soothed my nerves once I walked through the door. I was greeted at the door professionally. My Serbian waitress and Jose the bartender were awesome. I loved every minute I was at Maya. I felt very welcome here. Great personal attentiveness to my needs. I had a great time in this uplifting, colorful and lively Mexican restaurant. What a fun place! The music was fabulous as there should be a dance floor somewhere around, maybe in he corner. The Southern Mexican cuisine was excellent. I had the beef and chicken enchiladas, the red ones. Superb! The tortilla chips are served warm and salted to perfection. As for the food, it seemed like they do not have enough for the busy times or crowds. In fact, your order will be taken and you may have to change it a few times. Do not expect to be checked on after you put in your order. You may have to hunt people down. Also, management, what management? She will avoid you and not provide any kind of customer service. Which makes sense why this place runs how it does, there is clearly leadership lacking. Music is playing in the background. Stopped by here a few weeks ago around 5 pm. Parking lot wasn't crowded. Went inside and asked for a table. We were told 15 min wait. I looked around and literally only four tables were in use. She explained they were short staffed. Went to the bar for drinks and ordered food there. I ordered the carne asada. When it came out the steak portion was half the size of other Mexican restaurants. I thought maybe they doubled it over but looked and only the one half portion. It was tasty and cooked correctly (not over done which seems to be the norm). Definitely not worth $25 by any means.
