I only post when I have a positive experience. First of all this place is clean! No dust on light fixtures or fans. The restroom was clean and the bar area is clean. BTW the bar is beautiful with plenty of leather barstool backs and handcrafted wooden tables and stools. I base much of my opinion of a Mexican restaurant on the quality of their tamals ( not only cleanliness) their tamals are great! My whole meal was great! My husband and I both enjoyed our dinner here. He had the beef chimichangas, and I had a shrimp and scallop dish with lots of veggies. He said his was good - he'd give it a solid 4! My dish was yummy, too; especially after I added their house hot sauce. What we found unique was the chips and salsa came with some Cole slaw for dipping, as well. Pretty tasty Cole slaw, but I don't think I would normally put it on tortilla chips. I prefer white sauce or salsa, but fun trying nonetheless. My Pina colada Margarita was refreshing and tasty; although, I would have liked a little stronger pineapple/coconut flavor. The staff were wonderful: very attentive and helpful. Terrible. Just terrible. We were seated in the back of the restaurant away from other patrons in a section that was closed. The food was horrible. The queso dip with ground beef was served ice cold. The Guadalajara special was served with burned rice, a tamale that tasted like dish soap, and burned refried beans. The flautas were okay but not delicious. Hubby enjoyed the burrito, and kiddo enjoyed the chicken fajitas. All in all, what a waste of $145. read more

This place was conveniently located near our hotel and we were looking for a quick bite to eat after a morning of snow tubing. We were greeted and quickly sat. I liked the decor and the chairs had their logo designed on them which was cool. The chips came out with salsa and coleslaw. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that serves coleslaw with chips. It was interesting but not my thing. I did like that the chip holder had places to rest the bowls. I had nacho supreme and I liked that it had been and chicken and refried beans. I wish things were spread around on the nachos so you could get more flavor in each bite. The beans were on the left, beef was in center and chicken in the right. The tomato was a slice instead of chopped so when you cut into it you broke the chips below. The sour cream was dropped in one area instead of drizzled around. My husband had a huevos chorizo dish which he said was a little dry. This was nice enough but next time we visit Harrisonburg and want Mexican, I might give somewhere else a try. This place did look like it had a big drink selection which we didn't get to try while there and it might be worth a revisit. read more

It took 10 minutes to have someone come to the table to ask for our drinks after being seated. We enjoyed the chips and salsa. After finally coming back to our table and taking our order, it took over 40 minutes to get our food we were finally told that there was a bigger party in the other room and we apologize for the inconvenience. Don't they have more than one grill or cooks? Once we got our food my wife didn't like the pico at all, after I tried it I told them to take it away that it was horrible. The overall experience for the food was nasty. The steak in my burrito was burned, and my wife's quesadilla was soggy. I can guarantee we will not be back. read more

I recently heard about Jalisco Family Mexican Restaurant from family members. I gave it a try for lunch this afternoon. The atmosphere is casual, the service is very good and the food is excellent. I ordered the El Tropical Burrito. It's the first time I ever had a burrito served with bbq sauce. As crazy as it may sound, the bbq sauce really works well with this burrito. I had a great experience at Jalisco and will definitely go back. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

This used to be my go to Mexican restaurant. The last 3 times I noticed the quality of the food and service have fallen drastically. Chips and salsa on sitting: Chips are cold and stale. Red salsa is mild, no texture, and could be tomato sauce mixed with some generic mild hot sauce. It's awful and watery. The other dipping sauce is basically cole slaw woth bad mayo. Food - plain and without texture. A fajitas dish consisted of some soft meat, uncooked veggies, and cheese burnt black on the platter. It was a very strange incident. First off we noticed that pretty much everything on the menu had doubled in price since the last time we were there. Which is to be expected somewhat. They also had a list of margaritas with no prices on them. Turns out they're $13 apiece. But the weird part was, we could not get our check! After we finished our meal and drinks, we sat there for probably 15 to 20 minutes with no waiter coming over. When he finally did, he claimed that he could not give us our check because the computers were down and it would be another 15 to 20 minutes. All the while I'm observing that other people are getting their checks and ordering food. The waiter continued to ignore us until I finally flagged him down and asked him if we could get our check. He said no the computers were still down. But I explained to him that the table right next to us just got their check and left. He stared at me for a moment, left and came back with our check but refused to split it. Ridiculous experience! I'm still uncertain why it took so long to get our check when obviously the computers were not down. read more

Went out for dinner and was told great stuff about this authentic Mexican place. We get seated right away and was greeted by our friendly waitress. I ordered the steak fajitas and it was amazing ! I hesitate to write this review because I just hate writing anything negative, but we had a pretty bad experience. First, the positives - we were seated promptly, chips and salsa delivered, and our orders were taken quickly. The drinks arrived fast, but they were not good. My kids got lemonades and they tasted off. They usually slurp down their drinks and they barely touched them, if that tells you anything. I ordered a strawberry margarita and my husband got a lime margarita. There were many things wrong with them, but what struck me initially was the color. The strawberry was bright red, not the usual pink that you see at most Mexican restaurants. This looked like the bright red of a slushie, not a margarita. The taste was very artificial and didn't really resemble strawberry. It also didn't seem to have any alcohol in it. My husband's lime margarita was a pale orange/yellow color. He said it tasted old like it had been sitting in a machine for too long. It also didn't seem to have alcohol in it. We had to ask for waters. We ordered our food and it did take some time to arrive. When it did, we only received 3 of the 4 meals we had ordered. I told my family to go ahead and eat while I waited on my meal. The server came back to ask what I had ordered. I told him and he appeared about 5 minutes later. All told, I waited about 10 extra minutes than my family. For the food, first - extremely odd, do you want cole slaw with your chips and salsa? I don't know who came up with this crazy idea, but cole slaw has no place in a Mexican food restaurant. It was served in a little dish alongside the chips and salsa. The chips weren't bad, but the salsa wasn't spicy at all. My kids each got the Del Mar plate. This wasn't very good. The fish filets were edible, but looked like they just had a dusting of red seasonings. The big problem with their meals was that the shrimp tasted off, like they were going bad and not fresh. My kids are older and they EAT, and they would normally have eaten this entire plate of food, had it been good. My meal was an enchilada plate and I found it really odd that in the medley of veggies and meat on top of them, there was some broccoli. I've never ever seen broccoli at a Mexican food restaurant. So bizarre. The enchiladas themselves were room temperature and soggy. My husband's meal was okay, he got one of the steak dishes. The thing that really bothered me was that we were all supposed to get refried beans and there was a complete absence of beans at the table. No one got beans - Only rice. Super disappointing! Refried beans are my fav. Also, we were all supposed to get tortillas with our meals. None came. We asked and they gave us three. Three tortillas for four people, when we should have had an order of tortillas each. None of us finished our meals or drinks, we got our bill and paid and went home hungry. :( La noche triste. read more

I left thinking that the service could have been significantly worse, and I would still give them 5 stars. I would go back, even if they made me wait outside in the freezing cold for 20 minutes, I would do it. The food is amazing. Service is horrible though. This place is breathtaking. If you like to enjoy the details of the experience of eating out, this place will impress you immensely. From the hand carved booths to embroidered and hand painted leather wrapped chairs that are made of heavy wood, this place really spares no detail. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The chips and salsa also come with a cilantro cole slaw...we added some El Yucateco red hot sauce to it and it was really different than anything we've ever had a Mexican restaurant. It reminded me of authentic Mexican we had in Isla Mujeres Mexico. We wish we had a place like this near us. Also, the bathrooms were immaculate. So clean I had to add a pic hahaha. read more

I think this is my favorite restaurant in Harrisonburg. I attended JMU for four years, and I faithfully went here whenever I was looking to dine out. First off, their menu is completely affordable. Want to make it even more affordable? Try ordering their quesadilla side items. The quesadillas are HUGE. They have several flavors: mushroom, cheese, beef, and chicken. So if you order one, it is only 2.50 for a satisfying meal. When I am extra hungry I would order two, but its impossible to finish without feeling overstuffed. They provide all-you-can eat chips, which I know, so does every mexican restaurant. BUT! They provide it with salsa AND their homemade coleslaw. I don't even LIKE coleslaw. But they have found some sort of magical recipe that makes people go wild. I'm hoping its not loaded with msg, but I seriously was hooked on the stuff for a long time and would just want to go eat there just to have the free chips. Its delicious. They also have extremely cheap drinks that college kids can afford. They make them strong too, if you're into that sort of thing. Basically I could be overstuffed for about 5 bucks. And sometimes 3 dollars. But don't be fooled by how cheap it is... the atmosphere is great (large murals, ample seating available, dim lighting, wide open space) and really perfect for college students to get together. read more

I didn't try the cole slaw but my friends enjoyed it. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice, beans, guac, lettuce, & tomatoes. It just tasted bland to me. It wasn't terrible but I was just disappointed. I have heard from a bunch of people how great this place is, but I personally just thought it was mediocre. I would probably go to Jalepenos or even el charro instead next time unless my friends really wanna go here. Willing to give it another shot though and maybe try a different dish. We decided to just find a "Mexican" restaurant to hopefully have a decent meal. We found ourselves at Jalisco. First impression, small store front in a small fairly nice and safe looking "strip mall.". Upon entering I was a little overwhelmed with the gaudy grandiose of the Western wagon wheel and Jalisco branded decor. Authentic to the Jalisco region? (See pics). We were greeted unenthusiastically but after some interaction with our waitress from Guadalajara, she lightened up and so did we. It was not busy, about 4:30 pm. Drinks were ordered to include a blended margarita, which looked very good and with no complaints from the person consuming it 100%, I can only conclude it was good. My beer (por) tap, Amber Dos Equis was good as well. The food was hot/ warm to serve and my nachos grande was solid , ample beef burger but could have used more (pollo) chicken. Quantity was good and quality and taste were solid, I could taste the ingredients. The other travelers seemed pleased with their meals as well. The service was very good overall, fast and efficient enough as would be expected since there were few others eating at that time. The bathroom appeared clean with paper towels ( I hate air blow dryers). Curiously there was a mouth wash dispenser in there as well. This place really is a hidden gem. The menu is enormous but once you do figure out what you want, you will not be disappointed! Very tasty food and delicious margs. The ambience is reminiscent of a classic Tex Mex restaurant. Some decor choices are oddly placed, for instance you will find a baby photoshopped in multiple positions on a beach. Don't let this deter you, it adds to the charm! Definitely give this place a chance! read more
