After a day in Shenandoah National Park - enjoying the leaves changing color on Skyline Drive - we decided to head out to Harrisonburg to visit Brothers Craft Brewing - for an ale tasting - before heading back home to the Northern Virginia area. Was our first time here, (in from PA) we will definitely be back. Taproom was a great atmosphere, the outdoor sitting area was very inviting. David was very attentive and gave great recommendations for brews to try. They had a nice variety to choose from, we enjoyed the ones that we tasted. This brewery was pretty sleepy on a Sunday, but they proved to be a great place to hang in the afternoon in Harrisonburg. Right away, I noticed the friendly staff, and they were really helpful in answering my questions. I ended up getting a can of the blackberry vanilla Berliner (alc 5.5% by vol) since it came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. It has multi-dimensional flavor, and was one of the best brews I've had recently. My partner got a Pilsner that was also pretty good, but looking at the menu, we probably should have tried a barleywine variety since they brew a large amount of those. We sat for a while, and there's plenty of space to sit inside and outside. They also have bonfire Fridays, and brew for Casks for a Cause (we love a brewery with community outreach!). We really enjoyed our stop at Brothers. We've had Hoptimization from the bottle thanks to distribution and love it, so we thought a stop in at the brewery we be great. We were right. I tried the Shilly Shally DIPA and he had the Whitlock white IPA. Both were good. We also tried the maple bourbon stout and it was surprisingly not as strong as expected. We also had a pint of Hoptimization of course. Overall I wish they had a few less trying-so-hard beers and a few more ales or lagers, but we really enjoyed it and would definitely go back again. read more

Interesting visit. The beer selection was very diverse; they had your almost standard list of IPAs, but also had a number of beer types that I seldom see, like a cherry porter, coffee maple, and a hopped sour. I sometimes see one or two of these types at a brewery, but it's rare to see all of them at once. I chatted with my server and he explained that this diversity isn't uncommon. While some breweries focus on a particular style, Brothers will try anything. The location was pretty nice; more bar-like that some other breweries, and the parking was easy. Another thing that's different is they sell a number of 'special edition' bottles. I didn't try any, but if you're looking to take home something special, check them out. Some were for drinking in the tasting room (and priced like a bottle of wine), and others were for take-home. What I tried: Coffee Maple Breakfast Stout: These are 4 words I don't think I've ever seen strung together. I neither liked or disliked it. Hefeweizen: I enjoyed it better than the previous one. Nice cloudiness. Coconut Resolute (Russian Imperial Stout): VERY coconut-y. Not advertised but you can tell it was barrel aged. Not sweet like some coconut beers. Night Cap (Vanilla Cherry Porter): Another 3 word combo. Again, I neither liked or disliked it. Citraspective (Citra hopped sour): WOW, both the hops and the sour really come thru. IPAs would love this, but as I'm not an IPA fan, it wasn't for me. read more

We stopped in Brothers Craft Brewing on our way to Otter Creek Campground from DC. It's near JMU's campus, and it's obviously really popular with the folks there -- there were a bunch of alumni setting up a football tailgate party when we arrived. The location/size is good, ample parking in the back, covered outdoor patio seating. Having hit many breweries across the country, I'd say that Brothers is pretty average quality of beer. Probably better than your standard Bud Light, but I wouldn't say that the beer itself is stellar. There were some off flavors in the Fest beer -- the best of the bunch was the barrel aged in the cask. This place is solid for being a local college hang, but I think I'd probably check out other breweries in the area if I were to drive through again. read more

My boyfriend and I visited here on 8/17. We were interested in visiting a local brewery as we're new to the Shanendoah area. We landed on this one. Reviews seemed good, location was very close to where we were in the area. When we walked in, the atmosphere was cute and the music was great. There were only 3 other people inside. There was no greeting by the bartender. He just stared at us as we walked to the bar. We had to initiate the greeting, which was strange. Decent selection of beers, a few too many IPAs for my taste, but I can assume they'd be popular in a college town. We looked over the selection for a bit, again while the bartender just stared at us, then my boyfriend asked "do yall serve liquor here too?" The bartender said "uh no. It's a brewery." This smug remark kind of put us off for the rest of the visit. Where we're from, Virginia Beach, most of the local breweries serve a small selection of liquor as well. We came for the beer anyways, it definitely wasn't an inconvenience, he was just curious. My boyfriend just said okay and we took a minute more to make our decision on one beer each, a lager and a stout, finished those and then just left. If the customer service had been better, we would have stuck around for a few hours. It just seemed as though we were bothering the bartender, honestly. He sat at the bar and played on his phone after we finished ordering with him. He didnt speak to us again after we placed our order, either. We drove 4 minutes up the road to Billy Jacks and had a fun time with great service, even though they were jam packed. We will most likely not return to this location as there are plenty of other breweries around. 3/5 August 2019. We stopped here as part of a beer tasting trip. It's on the north end of town kind of away from most of the other breweries. There was a nice ambiance and and our service was good. They had several good beers but nothing that really jumped out at me as exceptional. Their Staycation and Peaked Mountain were my favorites. If you're in town for a bit it's worth a stop but there are a couple other options I would rank ahead of it if you only have time for one stop. Not the best in town but still pretty good. read more

This brewery probably makes the best brews I've had anywhere. They basically focus on bold tasting brews, and they really know what they are doing. We tried the flight of five pictured plus the coconut shy, coffee porter, oak wood aged porter, and the chocolate mint, and every single beer was outstanding. I know that sounds unlikely, and I can say I have never been able to say I liked every beer I tasted in a brewery, but I am saying that now. Great beer, our bartender Greg very knowledgeable, friendly, and personable, and a very nice interior. There even is a separate room with comfortable couch seating and big comfy chairs and large tv. This review is about two months overdue, but I'm as excited about 3 Brothers Brewery as I was two months ago! My boyfriend and I had some time to kill in Harrisonburg during a music festival, before the evening's shows started. We had heard about this new brewery from some JMU students, so we decided to give it a try. Located about 5 minutes outside of the heart of Harrisonburg, it was somewhat hard to find given that the building was unmarked, but the large steel tanks visible through the windows gave it away. (I saw on Twitter that they put their sign up the other day, so it should be easier to locate now!). We sat at the bar in the newly-finished (more like newly almost-finished) tasting room and started with a flight of 5 beers. Though I don't remember the specifics on all of them, I do know we sampled a light, pale summer lager, a Scottish ale (?), a coffee stout (Coffeebreath), an IPA, and a DIPA (Hoptimization). We liked almost all of them, but the Hoptimization was the clear winner for both of us. We quickly ordered two pints of that and happily went on our way. I would definitely recommend a visit if you're in Harrisonburg. I know they are making their way out to Charlottesville and Richmond, and I definitely hope to see more of this brewery soon! read more

The location itself is sketchy. However, our bartender was really awesome. She went through each beer to let us know what each tasted like. We decided to try out the flights that they had. It was 5 flights for $8 - such a good deal. I personally really liked the eight bells and ordinary bitter. The eight bells was flavored to taste like French cinnamon toast! Came in on a Wednesday night while following the Shenandoah valley brew trail. The tasting room is warm and welcoming and has a great view of where they brew their beers. I was happy to see the Stanley Cup finals was on until I saw they display a Washington Capitals banner behind the bar. As a Pittsburgh Penguins fan I just let the beer speak for itself and boy did it! The brews are full of flavor and hit every part of your palate. They didn't have food while I was there, and when we first passed it looked closed (9pm on a Wednesday) but my fiancé saw some awning lights and we turned around. This is a must visit if you love craft brews. They have everything from Belgians to lagers and IPAs. It is open and the patrons on my visits were very welcoming. read more

Pro: Great Beer Con: Service was ok (you have to order at the bar but they will bring you your drinks); the atmosphere/setup at this place is a bit strange (in my opinion) overall; the space is kind of industrial and a bit spare... not that many seats in the place (seating is spread out and mostly large tables or bar seating, which is a bit awkward in itself); there is a kind of cool / kind of weird 'living room' seating area in it's own separate area. I'm glad they had food outside... and it's nice that they bring it in; though, wish it was a bit more seamless ordering... And while the food outside was ok (it certainly hit the spot in my hungry tummy), I wouldn't return for the food --- but the beer was great! I especially enjoyed their 'heifwiezen' style beer (though I swear it tasted a lot more like a Belgian white wheat beer... think Hoegaarden or Blanche de Bruges). Their golden Belgian beer was also on point (tasted a lot like a Leffe Blonde). I also enjoyed their Russian Imperial Stout -- but it was NOT good with food (the two previous beers were). The Russian Imperial Stout was a great sipping beer, by itself, though. The prices are... ok; what can you say, it's craft beer and tasty. The sampler is nice. I'm not a big IPA fan; theirs were ok, but I wouldn't want to drink more than a sampler sized taste of it. Parking is around back; it didn't seem like there was a ton of parking (or space inside the tap room)... but we were there on a Saturday afternoon, and the turnover was steady enough and no issues with seating or parking. Also, I'm uncertain about the kid-friendliness of this place. We had a sleeping baby with us (under the bar) the whole time and it wasn't an issue (she didn't make a peep). I didn't see any other kids in here until we were on our way out and a couple walked in with a kid. I'm almost positive I would never bring my 3-year old here... way too much energy. Again, the lack of tables (only 3 large tables) might make this not a super kid-friendly destination (that, and they only/mostly serve beer). read more

Great place to grab a beer! The exterior and location suggest more of a warehouse than a brewery, but the interior will set your mind at ease. There is not a copious amount of seating space, but plenty of room to stand and the TVs are positioned such that they are easy to view from any location inside. I drank the hoptimization and it was passable. They only offered about 12 beers when I was there, but the beer spans the breadth of all beer categories. Barrel-aged vanilla porter (Smooth Sailor?) was really well made. Smooth, not too sweet and a good roastiness. You could definitely taste the bourbon barrel, not my fave style but it wasn't overwhelming. Oatmeal stout was a winner. Lighter than most, firm bitter and dry finish. I fell in love with 3 Brothers Beer when the wife and I went to Alamo Drafthouse the night after a 3 Brothers Tap Takeover. The variety of styles and the experimentation among their offerings was impressive, and what I was able to sample was fantastic. (Unfortunately, a couple had tapped out, such as the Eight Bells Blueberry French Toast Ale). I immediately bookmarked them for a future visit on a trip down I-81 to the Brew Ridge Trail area. We decided on a family gathering on the Brew Ridge Trail for my birthday, and I was riding with my in-laws, meeting the others at our hotel in Waynesboro. We were fairly ahead of schedule, so my in-laws were so kind as to make a short detour off of I-81 to 3 Brothers Brewery and Tasting Room just within the Harrisonburg city limits. Their tap room is beautiful, and the space is well-organized with tables and a separate lounge room with sofas for a more-casual experience. They keep roughly 9 of their beers on tap, with the standard offerings of samples, flights, full glasses, and growler fills. Being early November, the fall seasonals were highlighted, and their excellent Märzen was poured generously and cheaply. The Commodore Double IPA was surprisingly smooth for a DIPA, and the Great Outdoors Pale was crisp like a good pale ale should be. As I noted, they mix up the "standards" with great experimental offerings like their Resolute (Bourbon-Barrel aged Russian Stout) or the Fierce Blonde (Rum Barrel aged Belgian Blonde). And they tend to keep one offering on cask as well - I believe it was the imperial stout when I was there. 3 Brothers is making significant headway in the Virginia Craft Beer scene with their well-crafted standards and superb experimentals. The only sign of life in Harrisonburg on a Saturday afternoon. Corn-hole tournaments and life-size Jenga games aside, I found what may be one of my favorite beers aside from Guiness and Sapporo. Their Rum Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel was superb and easy to drink on a lazy afternoon. The only downside was the contracted catering food truck with the bacon-wrapped jalapeños that took an hour to cook. When they finally finished, they were mighty tasty and had some serious kick, which was great with the beer. The tasting room has a good atmosphere, but some people linger too long at the bar as the swag is purchased at the same registers as the brew. read more
