Growing up in LA with a parent from the Caribbean, I'm used to having access to good Jamaican and Caribbean food. Unfortunately, that's one thing Reno is seriously lacking. I had heard about Jamaica Jerk Spot and had been wanting to catch their food truck for a while, mostly to see if it could give me a little taste of what I've been missing from back home, but I could never seem to be in the right place at the right time. Then one evening, as I was pulling into my apartment complex, I spotted their truck. Needless to say, I already knew what we were having for dinner. I walked up, checked out the menu, and decided on the jerk beef short ribs. My wife went with the oxtail. Both meals came with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantain, all the Jamaican staples you expect. The woman working the window was really nice and courteous and even gave us a few recommendations while we were deciding. It took about 10 minutes from ordering to getting our food, and we headed home to eat. First thing I did was steal one of my wife's oxtails, and it was amazing. Fall-off-the-bone tender with great flavor, and most importantly, the gravy was on point. Oxtail is only as good as the gravy it's sitting in, and theirs was delicious. My jerk short ribs were really good too. They were meaty, tender, and had a nice jerk flavor. My only complaint is that I would have liked more heat. I like my jerk spicy. In my opinion, it's not really jerk unless you're sweating a little. That said, the flavor was good enough that I still enjoyed every bite. I also wish they gave you a little more jerk sauce because I definitely would have poured it all over the rice and peas. Overall, the food was tasty, the portions were solid, and the prices were reasonable. There are already a few other things on the menu I want to go back and try, especially the curry chicken, jerk pork ribs, oxtail tacos, and beef patty. Reno may still be lacking when it comes to Caribbean food, but at least now I know that when I'm craving a taste of the islands, Jamaica Jerk Spot can satisfy that itch. read more

The best Jamaican food I've eaten in Reno bar none. The customer service was super friendly and the food was quick! We grabbed some food while they were parked at Carpeteria, but they move around daily so check their Instagram for updates. We tried the jerk chicken and the chicken curry, both with fried plantains. This is thee Jamaican Jerk Spot you'd want to eat at when it pops up! I got excited the past two times Fritzie W. said their food truck was going to be close to us. The ambiance of a food truck is what you would expect. Food and truck. LOL It was awesome to be greeted with a smile and the weather that day felt right. The mood was right. Fritzie wanted the Rasta Pasta, it's a twist to traditional pasta, cheesy with jerk seasoning (all spice, thyme, Cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, etc) along with some Oxtail. I had Oxtail as well, along with their Macaroni and cheese and rice . The food was really good, rich and flavorful. Well seasoned. The Oxtail was tender. The macaroni and cheese was very good. first off the owner is a liar i posted a review originally liking the food came back a second time in the food was trash. On my second review, I said my boyfriend and I came at 2 o'clock right when they opened. I waited for our food and when we got it, it was old food. It was not fresh at all. The chicken was old, not smoked enough. It tasted dry and old like yesterday's food. The beef patties was not even hot. They were crumbly and dry. I got back out my car and asked her. She said they had just made them at 1 o'clock. They didn't open till two so how the hell I'm lying and I have videos and pics I was actually doing her a favor just complaining . but now since she wanna lie I'm coming with everything . very nasty attitude and garbage ass food . The jerk chicken, the rice, the plantains, the cabbage, the MAC! Are all top notch! I'm surprised they don't have a restaurant already tbh. I say all that because It's rare I find a food place that makes me want to grab a whole second plate of it just to share the experience with. That being said I bought my mom and pops a plate of the jerk chicken and Rasta pasta. And they couldn't help talk about how much they loved the rice, and spices used. As a Filipino, we love us some rice. lol But the Rasta pasta is my new fave. Hope to try the oxtail next time. I'd post a picture of my food. The lady that owns this is super sweet and she switches up her menu a little bit everyday. I think jerk chicken is always on the menu but she rotates jerk shrimp, oxtails, ribs and curry goat through as additional offerings from day to day. She posts her menu mid week so you can see what she will have each day. The food was great, I got jerk chicken and shrimp with coleslaw on the side. The shrimp and chicken were great and had that nice spicy pop. The rice/beans and coleslaw were also really good. Everything had a good balanced flavor to it. It took a minute, but we finally got another fixing of the best Jamaican food in town! What can I say that hasn't already been said? The plates are absolutely loaded and worth every penny. The food is seasoned well and made with love. I can't ever not get the oxtails with some jerk chicken on the side. She has Jamaican beef patties now and they are the best I've ever had! Meat was not bland and the pastry was CRISP. Most of the time you cannot get both of those at once. She is always at the Carpeteria on the South side, but I was very happy to see her pull up so much closer to Sparks and to more local events. We love our almost weekly order for actual Jamaican food in Reno! Service is great and food comes out fresh! Did you also know they are now on Doordash so you don't have to worry about going too far to satisfy your taste buds! Our favorite go to plates are the jerk ribs, oxtails and jerk chicken (but with the bone so you know it's authentic). She will also cook different items to try like curry goat and Rasta pasta! Definitely try to order or call in for pick up earlier in the day as she does run out before closing time. Parking is easy between the jiffy lube and carpeteria. Wife outta town so now I get to eat what I want when I want! Where do I go? The only place in town I can get Jamaican food (correct me if I'm wrong)! I'll preface the review by saying that this place has no ambience, no seating, it's off a busy, noisy street, the truck is old and the generator just adds to the noise. But the food...that's why u come here. Jerk dishes, oxtail, curry goat and all the fixins. Portions are mighty. And this is a TRUE mom & pop business. Literally, mom, pop and baby. There ain't no one else. Mom told me when I ordered it would be about 10 minutes. It was barely 5. The curry smelled so good on the way home. Finally got home and loved what I saw. For $20 I got curry goat, rice & peas, steamed cabbage, plantains, and a festival (corn fritter). The goat was unctuous, melt in your mouth tender. Peppercorns and thyme are in the stew. Even got a bonus bone with some marrow in it. Tender carrots and potatoes in there too. I left nothing on the bones in the end. I would take rice and peas over white rice any time. Fluffy with just that hint of coconut milk. Cabbage was al dente; not over steamed. I would take this side over Mac & cheese or Rasta pasta. It's all so heavy and all those other sides are so rich. Loved the caramelization on the plantains. My next tip...dip the festival in what curry gravy is left and then dump the rice in the rest. Leave nothing behind! You ain't gettin good Jamaican food anywhere else. Come HERE. Support this young family. One last tip: I said I got all that for $20. That's true if you bring cash which I would advise. If I could give 10 stars I would! This cute little truck is run by the nicest lady. I ordered the Jerk Shrimp and WOW! First off, she made the shrimp fresh to order and they were tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned amazingly! We also had to try the Jerk Chicken and Ox Tails, also amazing. The Ox Tails were melt in your mouth tender. Literally, the best. The rice and cabbage were also delicious. The Mac salad was stellar and the fried plantain, literal perfection. This little truck has really brought something special to the Reno food scene. There really wasn't anything close to real Jamaican food. Yet, it's not just the correct use of spices that make what the Jamaican Jerk Spot serves so delicious, it's also the love and heart that go into the food. This truck was only food option at Automobile museum concert. Concert was 2 hours and we missed half the concert waiting for our food. They were very disorganized. We were one of the first few customers and they were out of things on their very basic menu right from the start. This is an exciting addition to the growing food scene in Reno. I recommend locals and travelers to check out what Jamaica Jerk Spot has to offer. Reno doesn't have a lot of options for Jamaican cuisine, but this one is promising. My first visit I had two main dishes, jerk chicken w/ veg and oxtail w/ mac n cheese. Both plates had the meat cooked tender and juicy w/ a sweet, spicy, and slightly smokey flavor. Rice n beans with the plantains and sides filled me up. Portions were generous. The only criticism from me, is to have more of that scotch bonnet pepper in there, or at least giving an option to turn up the heat more. Even without that heat, this is still worth checking out. The mastermind behind the food is cordial and provides great service. If there's any accommodation that needs to be made, sending a message via instagram or facebook is always an option.
