Why do yall waste time complaining about the attitudes of the owner and staff? By now, you should all know that the food in a black owned restaurant is probably not worth it if at least one member of the staff doesn't have an attitude. DUH! With that being said, yes attitudes are deplorable and the food is good. With the exception of the jerk sauce which they are definitely using italian dressing to stretch. Stop doing that please. I've passed by this places more then 100 times and never thought to stop. Well today I did and had the dark lunch special it's cabbage and Mac and cheese. The cabbage was just right and seasoned very well, as well as the Mac and cheese. I will be back! read more

Patronized here twice: First-time I ordered a whole jerk chicken. It was piping hot, fresh and well seasoned!!!! Second time I ordered half chicken and came fresh, hot and well seasoned. I have not had the bad customer service experience I have read about on here so as far as that goes it was pretty cool with me. Decided to get a Wing Dinner. I wan't be patronizing this place again. Meal consisted of chicken wings, beans and rice and cabbage. Beans and rice were fine and cabbage was fine but the main course was disappointing. Wings were non-moist and lacking flavor. Its like they cooked them yesterday and reheated them today then served them. I went to this place several months ago and food was average at best so I decided to give them another try. Went here today April 4th 2017 craving Jerk Chicken. Whenever I buy Jerk chicken I always couple it with a side of Ox Tail gravy. Yummm. Try it! ... The Jerk Chicken here is very flavorful. The chicken is not dry and the rice and peas has it's own gravy they lace on top of it which is Awesome! I purchased the special for $6.60, that's chicken rice and peas and cabbage. Downside is No bread with it? Whatha? Mmmkay? In conclusion the reason I'm three star rating this establishment is because Your Uncle WALLY at the order window is rude as Hell and In need to be hit with a Big Balloon Of Jerk Sauce! Smh! Probably one of the best Jerk spots in the city...nice size portions, good sauce, & great sides (cabbage, red beans, & plantains are all I've had). As with most it's best to call in first, but one thing about Jamaican Gates is they're honest about the wait time. Prices are standard, parking is on the street but there's usually a spot not too far from the door. read more

I ordered the jerk catfish. The only reason I didn't give this place five stars is because the catfish was a little under done for my tastes. Super thick pieces weren't cooked as thoroughly as I'm used to. Other than that the flavors were on point. The calaloo was some of the best I've had. I like to have oxtail gravy over my peas and rice. Yumm city! Ill definitely go back, but will make sure to ask for my fish to be well done. A little pricey for the location but worth it. read more

I hadn't been here in years so I was excited to return. I got there at 1:30 PM and there only 2 people in the place. Being in a room with no heat for 20 minutes in 30 degree weather wasn't fun. I ordered curry chicken. The chicken was dry and looked like they just reheated it in curry sauce or whatever sauce you order. The rice wasn't flavorful. The cabbage was gritty so I stopped eating it after a a couple of bites. That was $8 wasted since I threw most of it out. Won't be back. read more

I am not out this far south ever unless i have to get my hair done. While i was waiting for my hairstylist to get her life together, i stopped in here for a quick bite. I must say this place is 100% authentic. I have not tasted any jerk chicken as good as this place in a long time. The chicken was grilled and spiced to the T. There are many jerk places in Chicago but i can guarantee not as authentic as this place. Love it!! Wish i could come back more often but its just too far south from where i live. read more

it's been a while, since the winter, that i've been here. not because i don't like it but you know how it goes. today i called at 11, wanting oxtails and i was told they'd be ready later, which was fine with me. i just didn't want them to run out. it's friday. a few hours later, i call back, "5 minutes" and it was only longer than that because i was messing around. then i let a lady get ahead of me. don't get me wrong, i've spent as much time in that place as anybody on some days, but some days you get lucky and today was my day. have i mentioned the food yet? 1/2 white jerk and a large oxtail dinner. i'm trying to write this before i pass out from the itis. seriously though, this place is good. you can't beat the food quality and, like any hotspot, on certain days, you're gonna get your patience tested. same thing happens when i go downtown or up north, by the way, just a different accent. and you don't have to spend $50 on drinks while you wait at the bar. have i had waits longer than i was told? yup. was i mad? hell yup. was it worth it? every time. i'm in the restaurant biz, i don't just gas up places for fun, i expect a lot. this place is worth your time, patience, money and, most importantly, your tastebuds and appetite. read more

I went here in November the food is great. I got a small oxtail dinner $13.50 and my boyfriend had the jerk chicken $7.00 special plus a beef patty $2.50. The oxtail was meaty and flavorful. His jerk chicken was fresh, not dry and definitely spicy. I would recommend calling ahead and they seem to work a little slow right after they open. Very good Jamaican food with reasonable prices. Jerk chicken and jerk fish were both very good. Rice and gravy were good. Cabbage was good, but not cooked like traditional Jamaican cabbage. So I did end up going back here. That guy that harasses Women was not there. I ordered three dinners, an oxtail, dark jerk and a mixed jerk both with ox tail gravy. The dark jerk didn't have any ox tail gravy on the rice. And the food was CLEARLY re-heated. Old chunks of rice was stuck together, the chicken tasted funny like it had been sitting in water when it was re-heated. Will definitely not return this time. read more

Horrible customer service, very rude!! I called in my order, told 35min. to pickup, arrived and was told the cabbage was not done, said it would take 20 more min. I advised the manager I couldn't wait 20min. I wan on lunch from work, said he would substitute the cabbage for the few choices of sides which were ready. I waited another 35min.for my order, cabbage was still not ready and he had the nerve to try to charge me for a bag after waiting over an hour, total, for my order. That 7 cents bag and good customer service could have saved and gained a repeat customer. Going to Uncle Joe's from now on, I only went here because they opened an hour earlier but I still didn't get my order until after 12, I ordered at 11:15am. read more
