We stopped at James Angelo's Underground Pizza while visiting the Big Island and had the pepperoni pizza, garlic knots, and a salad. Everything was outstanding. The pepperoni pizza was excellent. The crust had a great texture with a light crisp on the outside and just the right amount of chew. The sauce was flavorful without overpowering the toppings, and the pepperoni was generous and cooked perfectly. It tasted fresh and homemade from the first bite to the last. The garlic knots were fantastic. Soft, warm, and loaded with garlic flavor, they were easily some of the best we've had. The salad was fresh, crisp, and a great complement to the meal. What really stood out was James himself. You can immediately tell that he loves what he does and takes pride in his restaurant. He was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely interested in making sure guests had a great experience. It is refreshing to visit a place where the owner is so invested in both the food and the people walking through the door. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed, and the entire experience felt personal rather than rushed. Places like this are becoming harder to find. One thing visitors should know is that the restaurant is cash only. That wasn't a problem for us, and there is an ATM available at a nearby gas station if needed. Just come prepared so you can focus on enjoying the food. This was one of our favorite meals during our time on the Big Island. Such an unexpected place to find some of the best pizza on the island. Even more unexpected to have lived right next door for half a year. It was awesome to be able to walk a short distance and order a pizza! Great service, beautiful area, can't complain. Well... besides trying to sleep with the exhaust fan running 24/7 but that might be Earl's. I'll forever remember all the slices I ate during that time. Absolutely delicious! We were so hungry after spending the day at Hapuna beach & stopped here on our way back to Hilo. The pizza was amazing! Some of the best pizza I've had. It's a small space inside but they have a large table outside which is nice. You also sit wherever you can find a spot. Luckily we had cash on us because it's cash only! I called to put in an order and the lady was ready to hang up on me after I ordered a pizza, but before I could order a salad and wings. When we got there, we forgot that they only took cash or check so we walked over to the gas station to get cash and five minutes later she forgot who we were. They were not even busy. The Caesar salad was $7 and was very small with just lettuce and six croutons. The salad dressing was crap. You'd think they could whip up some homemade dressing! Pizza wasn't good either. The garlic knots were the best I have ever had and the pizza by the slice was made fresh and couldn't have tasted better -- also came as a double slice so it's a ton of food at a great value. I live in the area and have been a regular customer. James, the owner is not very friendly. They only take cash, which is a major inconvenience. I would be ok with that if they treated customers with respect. They burned my pizza a number of times where the only edible part was the middle. It was not some char, it was burned! I've always left tips even when they screwed up the ingredients or burned it. Finally complained and the owner asked me to bring the burned pizza back for evidence. He was very dismissive and rude. The best pizza in Waimea. Cash only! We've tried so many of the pizza here- by far is the white spinach pizza and I would highly recommend mushrooms. Inside is very non chalant and easy going. Looking for little Italy in the middle of the big island? Look no further. This tiny, mom and pop pizza shop has the feels of an authentic Italian joint, right down to the checkered table clothes and tables named "godfather." The owner makes each pizza fresh to order and you can watch him roll out the dough behind the counter. We ordered bruschetta ($2/each and 3 comes in an order). When it came out, it was pretty underwhelming appearing, but I am surprised to say it has the best flavor of any bruschetta I've ever had! Def recommend trying one . Then I ordered an 18" veggie lover pizza (minus the olives and added pepperoni and also had light cheese and extra sauce). They made it perfectly. this is a thinner crust pizza but still chewy enough. The ingredients taste fresh and they spread the toppings evenly across the entire pie. The only complaint was the base of the pizza was what I assume to be straight tomato sauce out of a can, but it worked well together and it was still delicious. The portion size is huge and two of us couldn't finish the pizza. Warning: they only accept CASH OR LOCAL CHECKS. No card. Seating space is super small. They are also super busy but they work quickly to get your order out. I don't necessarily think pizza when I come to Hawaii, but it's good and I'd be back. read more
