Marifredo...subbed out sausage for extra mushrooms - Full size

Consistently excellent every time! Love eating here when passing thru waimea or for special date night. Beautiful and cozy indoor decor, comfortable seating and very friendly staff. Highly recommend! I want to try every menu item!!

Pesto Crème with Shrimp

Glad we found this local Italian spot! Freshly made pasta was fantastic, shrimp was perfectly cooked, sauces were good but a bit under-salted. The calamari appetizer was just ok, sticks not the typical rings & tentacles. They were a bit understaffed with only one waitress, but once we got our order in the food came promptly.

Fine dining at its best here in Waimea, Big Island. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner here with my son and his family. Started off with their house salad with strawberry vinaigrette dressing. Our entrees were pasta dishes of Fresco Verde with Ahi, Carbonara, and Bolognese for the adults; and Meat Lovers pizza and Keiki pepperoni pizza for the kids. Everything was delicious, flavorful, and generous. Overall service was excellent and the atmosphere very cozy. If you reside in Waimea, visiting, or just passing through, I highly recommend this hole in the wall place if you love Italian cuisine.

Pesto mozzarella bread - kinda soggy
Sharon L.

Sign outside says fine-dining but the service and food doesn't really feel like fine-dining. We started with the pesto mozzarella bread - flavor was good but the bread was soft. Think this would be better if crispy. Half portion of the pasta is more than enough, portion wise. The marifredo sauce is good but watery - would prefer a thicker texture so it can stick to the pasta better. The pasta itself was tasty and had a nice chew. Meat lovers pizza was good and a 10 inch is perfect for 1 person. Crust was flavorful and cheesy. Service was okay but the ambiance definitely felt more casual than fine dining. Our entrees took a long time to arrive after the appetizer, even though there were only 2 other tables in the entire restaurant at the time. I also felt a little weirded out by a comment our server made when I ordered the half portion of the pasta. She said, "oooooh, saving room for dessert?" I'm sure she didn't intend that in a negative way and maybe was just trying to small talk, but it did made me feel judged and uncomfortable. I didn't think our order overall was "too little" or "too cheap" so I thought that comment was weird.

The Kohola cocktail

This restaurant serves very delectable, savory dishes and really fresh Waimea greens and tomatoes. Today we dined in at lunch and we were greeted by a very friendly waitress. The restaurant is quiet with some soft background music. Started with the Chicken Caesar bruschetta appetizer which we understand is the top choice. It was 4 perfectly crisp pieces of bruschetta with savory dressing of red wine vinaigrette, arugula, diced tomatoes, and thinly sliced chicken. It was so incredibly delicious ! You definitely have to order this. For lunch I ordered the 1/2 sizes caprese salad with added extra Waimea greens which consisted of arugula, I believe Bibb lettuce, spinach, and maybe romaine? It was so good, fresh, and hydrating. My greens were topped with fresh slices of tomatoes and mozzarella, drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette dressing! It was indeed delicious.

We went for our anniversary dinner and were so glad we decided to celebrate here. Very nice relaxed atmosphere, there are tables inside and out side on like a large open air lanai area with festival lights strewn across the ceiling and arches to view the sunset. Our server was Courtney who was very friendly and attentive. She made great recommendations! We tried everything she recommended. We started with a the Brussel Sprouts that were served in a cast iron skillet, crispy and tender with a balsamic glaze and the Caesar's Salad which was so fresh and coated with the perfect amount of dressing. We ordered the garlic Focaccia with melted cheese served with the most delicious marinara sauce for dipping. Then we ordered the Vodka Pasta with Shrimp, 4 large shrimps in a creamy tomato vodka sauce and house made fresh pasta. For dessert we had the Cannoli, the best Cannoli I ever had! The shell was crispy the filling was light, sweet and just delicious! Courtney gifted us the Cannoli for our anniversary and the entire staff signed an anniversary card for us. They also have a full bar and my husband was pleased with the whiskey selections and their reasonable prices. What an amazing dinner that delighted all of our senses. We will definitely have this place on our must go to list whenever we visit Hawaii Island.

Cipriano's Kitchen - Kawaihae's Italian Treasure…read more Cipriano's Kitchen is one of those rare restaurants that keeps you thinking about your meal long after you've left. Chef Gino is generous with both his talent and his portions. Every dish showcases fresh ingredients, expert preparation, and a genuine love of Italian cooking. The menu is seafood-forward, featuring fresh local catches, handmade pasta, and flavors that are both authentic and creative. This family-run restaurant is made even more special by Claudia, Chef Gino's wife and culinary partner. Claudia bakes fresh focaccia daily and prepares the restaurant's gnocchi and pasta from scratch. As hostess, she warmly welcomes every guest and effortlessly serves as the restaurant's "walking menu," describing each dish with passion and detail. The presentation is stunning. Lobster, octopus, shrimp, clams, scallops, and house-made pasta arrive beautifully plated and bursting with flavor. The fresh focaccia alone is worth the visit. Every meal feels thoughtfully prepared, from the first bite to the last. What keeps me coming back is that the food is genuinely craveable. I find myself dining here every couple of weeks for lunch, and more often than not, I leave with a takeout order for dinner because I know I'll be thinking about it later. Cipriano's Kitchen isn't just serving Italian food--it's creating an experience centered around family, hospitality, and exceptional cooking. Kawaihae is fortunate to have this gem, and anyone who appreciates fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and heartfelt hospitality should make it a destination. A true Big Island favorite. "Come hungry. Leave happy. Plan your next visit before you've even finished your meal."

Tables are mainly outside with loud street traffic noise. We were brought water fairly quickly and had our menus to review. We then waited for 13 to 15 minutes until a young waitress returned answered our questions and we ordered some focaccia bread and three glasses of Sangiovese. $19 a glass for a very poor red wine and then seven dollars for six small pieces of focaccia bread. The least expensive wine by the bottle was $79. Their corkage fee if you brought your own bottle was a mind-boggling $179. We got our wine and bread in a reasonable time and then had to wait another 10 minutes to place an order. We were in the mood to have salad, but the least expensive was a Caesar, $25 for a small plate. We ordered two pasta dishes And one ravioli dish, which came with three cheese ravioli. The dishes in price ranged from $48-$56 each. Our food came out, reasonably on time. We requested some Parmesan cheese and olive oil for the side. The pasta was handmade, fresh and delicious. We very much enjoyed the entrées taste and presentation. One of the pasta dishes was just lukewarm when served. Our bill for three adults was $250 before tax and tip. While the food was excellent, we felt that the service and location, along with the ambience was not worth that price.

The pepperoni pizza was excellent. The crust had a great texture with a light crisp on the outside and just the right amount of chew. The sauce was flavorful without overpowering the toppings, and the pepperoni was generous and cooked perfectly. It tasted fresh and homemade from the first bite to the last. The garlic knots were fantastic. Soft, warm, and loaded with garlic flavor, they were easily some of the best we've had. The salad was fresh, crisp, and a great complement to the meal. What really stood out was James himself. You can immediately tell that he loves what he does and takes pride in his restaurant. He was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely interested in making sure guests had a great experience. It is refreshing to visit a place where the owner is so invested in both the food and the people walking through the door. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed, and the entire experience felt personal rather than rushed. Places like this are becoming harder to find. One thing visitors should know is that the restaurant is cash only. That wasn't a problem for us, and there is an ATM available at a nearby gas station if needed. Just come prepared so you can focus on enjoying the food. This was one of our favorite meals during our time on the Big Island. Great food, great service, and a restaurant that clearly reflects the passion of its owner. We will definitely be back on a future visit.

They opened with beef tartare that ruined me for every other beef tartare I've ever had. The osso buco is legendary. Then came the double cheeseburger... and I need everyone to understand that I don't hand out compliments like ketchup packets. This is, without question, the best burger I've ever eaten. It's so good it makes you want a cigarette afterward--and I don't even smoke. I've come back many times just for that burger because nothing else I've tried on Hawaiʻi Island or Oʻahu comes close. Their tater tots have developed their own fan club, and the little bar with beer, wine, and cocktails makes it dangerously easy to linger. The staff is consistently warm and welcoming. After being away for six weeks because of a family emergency, one of my first stops after returning was this burger. It was still outstanding, but I did notice the beef patty seemed about a third to nearly half thinner than I remembered. At around $20, that's noticeable. I'm hoping it was just an off day because this place has earned enough goodwill for me to give it another shot. Don't overlook the butcher shop itself. The meat quality is miles beyond what you'll find in a grocery store. I bought their ground beef for a ragù alla Bolognese, and it was so spectacular that I went back specifically to buy more for homemade burgers. Bottom line: this is one of the hidden gems of the island. Funny enough, even though we came twice, most of us ordered the same dishes from the first night. Between our two visits, we got the fresh catch crudo, oyster crudo for appetizers. Both were great. I loved the oysters because of the unique flavors. For mains we got lamb chops, paella, filet, and beef ragout. The lamb chops were so good, I ordered them during both visits. I loved the smattering of cannellini beans. They had a fresh citrus flavor to them. It brightened up the dish. The olives and mint chutney were great accompaniments too. The filet was another dish that was ordered on both visits. The truffle gratin potatoes were delicious and came served in its own cast iron dish to stay hot. The vegetables added a nice balance to the dish too. The beef ragout was nicely presented atop a bed of thick ribbons of pasta. It was a nice twist, rather than a traditional bolognese. The paella came with a variety of mixed seafoods and saffron rice. It was served in its own skillet. Desserts were also great. We got the Spanish cheesecake and the warm chocolate torta. The flavors are exploding and they all danced together in your mouth like a symphony. The bread is non-negotiable. It's a show stealer. I loved the mint salsa verde that came with it. The steak was also well flavored and grilled. The broccolini came with a great char. The lobster was great and easy to take out of the shell. The kitchen cuts the lobster for you, but lays it in the shell so you still see the meat in the shells. This was a great grilled dish too.
